Broken Awning Above The Door

Door awnings appear on many types of homes and buildings.

An awning above your door can add a decorative touch to your home's entrance, or serve a more practical purpose. Whatever your reason for having an awning, you'll likely want to keep it in good condition and find ways to repair it when it breaks. The steps for door awning repair vary based on the problem you're having and how the awning is constructed. Does this Spark an idea?

Function

A door awning can provide multiple benefits for your home. Decorative awnings use colored fabric, wrought iron frames and ornate woodwork to enhance the appearance of your home and make a visual statement to visitors. Awnings also keep guests out of the rain or snow while waiting at the door, as well as keep your doorstep free from water and ice. Finally, awnings block the sun, keeping harsh light from entering through windows on or around your front door.

Causes

Door awnings can break if they suffer impacts from falling objects, including branches and snow that falls from a roofline above. Damage also can occur when moving large objects through the door if they catch on the awning. Door awnings also degrade with age. An awning with a metal frame can experience rust after long-term exposure to the elements, while one made from wood can rot if moisture penetrated the frame.

Cover Repair

One of the most common types of awning problems involves a broken cover. As a temporary solution, or if your awning is made of the same material, a fabric sheet with a waterproof plastic lining will serve as a new cover. To replace wooden slats on a decorative awning, use a ladder and repair the awning without removing it from your home. Most awning manufacturers offer replacement covers in standard sizes, which will provide good fits and match the colors from a previous awning or on other awnings on your home.

Mounting Repair

Door awnings also can break when their mounting systems and structural frames become dislodged or break apart. If the frame breaks, you'll need to remove the awning and install new components to support the cover. High winds or heavy snow may cause an awning to break away fully or partially from your home. If the awning's mounting brackets pull out of vinyl or wood siding, you must replace the siding or find new, solid locations to reattach them.

Cool Ideas For Making Coffee Tables

A coffee table can be both functional and a form of creative expression.

Usually resting in the center of a living room or as a focal point in a den, a coffee table is a functional piece of furniture that can express something about the owner’s personality and individuality. Making your own coffee table allows you to step away from the basic wood rectangle and create a cool expression of your style. With your imagination as your only limitation, a cool coffee table is a weekend project that you can enjoy for years to come. Does this Spark an idea?

Rustic Door

An old door will make a visually interesting coffee table.

Whether your home d cor is shabby-chic or urban-chic, an architecturally interesting old door will fit right in and serve stylishly as your new coffee table. Purchase or scavenge a vintage, antique or distressed door and sand off any loose paint or sharp surfaces. Screw in some stained-to-match table legs from your home improvement store. A custom-cut piece of glass will make a smooth surface for coffee cups and magazines while still allowing viewers to enjoy the details and colors on the door. When you accessorize with other rustic wood items, your table fits right in and gives your whole room a warm and inviting look.

Aquarium or Terrarium Table

An aquarium is an ever-changing environment that can be modified into a coffee table.

An aquarium or terrarium coffee table is relatively easy to put together and will give you a totally custom look. A living sculpture that can easily be changed or rearranged, when you fill the aquarium with fish or plants you create a focal point in the room that guests will not be able to resist. Although you can purchase an aquarium coffee table set up, you can also put one together for little money by purchasing a used aquarium and discount glass. The time and effort you put into decorating and filling your container with plants or fish is creative time well spent. Consider the amount of natural lighting the area gets and supplement with electric light fixtures if necessary.

Rusted Pottery

Simple terra cotta pots can be turned into an attention-getting coffee table.

An organic approach to the coffee table problem, terra cotta pots and a couple of panes of glass will get you started on this cool project. Apply a faux rust compound to large, round terra cotta pots you get from your home improvement or gardening store. The height of the pots will be within an inch or two of your completed coffee table height, so measure them before you buy. Once your new clay pots are aged to perfection with the simple two-step rusting solution you get from a craft store, seal them with a clear spray sealant. Place one rectangular sheet of glass or Plexiglas on the floor cut to the table-size you desire. Arrange the pots on the glass and place upside down (the mouth of the pot to the floor) as desired. You can place them in a neat row, or stagger them for a longer table. Top off with the second matching piece of glass to complete your custom coffee table.

Cast Iron Cast Off

An old cast- iron tub makes for a functional conversation piece in your living room or den. Although bulky and heavy, a cast iron tub complete with sculpted feet, rusty sides and chipped interior provides an interesting curve for which to balance a clear Plexiglas tabletop. Perfect for a sunroom or garden room, a cast-iron tub coffee table will leave your guests envious of your creativity.

Wheelies

As just about anything that can hold a piece of glass can be a coffee table, there is no reason for your antique pedal car to be gathering dust in the basement. The perfect size and shape, antique pedal cars such as a firefighter's car from the 1960s or a Chevy pedal car from the late 1950s can be fitted with a piece of glass to make an eye-catching coffee table for any eclectic space. Adapt the vehicle so that the glass rests flat and level by placing small felt or rubber spacers along the low points of the toy and then enjoy the compliments.

Paint Plastic Capping On Wrought Iron Railing

Painting plastic is a relatively simple process. Most any amateur painter can accomplish this task as long as he understands the crucial preparation steps that are essential to a long-lasting finish. If you plan to paint plastic capping on wrought iron railing, you shouldn't have too much trouble as long as you familiarize yourself with the proper preparation and application techniques before you get started. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Wait for a dry, warm day.

2. Cover the wrought iron railing adjacent to the plastic capping with blue painter's tape.

3. Abrade the surface of the plastic capping to promote paint adhesion. Do this by gently sanding it with 80 to 120 grit sandpaper. Stop sanding when the plastic is slightly rough to the touch.

4. Apply a thin coat of oil-based primer to the plastic capping. Allow the primer to dry for two hours.

5. Wash the primer from the paintbrush using mineral spirits. Wash the brush at least three times.

6. Apply a coat of paint to the plastic capping in the same manner as you did the primer in step four.

7. Allow the paint to dry for at least two hours. Apply additional coats of paint as necessary.

Gothic Room Decorating

Goth is about the beauty of mystery and the unseen.

"The woods are lovely, dark and deep." Keep these words from Robert Frost and a few strains of "Moonlight Sonata" in mind when you think of Gothic decor. "Goth" isn't about bats, spiderwebs and blacklight band posters--that's Halloween. Gothic design is all about drama, mystery, deep, lush colors, aesthetic beauty and a healthy respect for all things classical. It's not about "evil;" it's about medieval. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Research Gothic design and decide which elements you like. Gothic influence comes from many sources, from the twelfth to sixteenth century abbeys and churches of France, to the more consciously dramatic Gothic revivals of the Victorian area to the neo-goth (also known as "executive goth") styles that take the general lines, proportions and colors of the Victorian revival era and refine them to the bare essence.

2. Choose a wall color that you like but go with one in a very subdued and slightly darker shade than you might for another decorating style. Very intense shades textured to appear older are typical for neo-goth. Dark red, purple and deep blues and violets are all classic Gothic wall colors; whatever you do, don't paint your walls black.

3. Emphasize the room's vertical aspect with floor-to-ceiling shelving or bookcases and place curtains rods high above the actual height of the windows. Gothic is a very architectural style, so if your home doesn't have high ceilings or tall windows, you'll need to trick the eye into thinking it has. Anything that draws the eye upward is good--four-poster beds, columns and window dressings can contribute to this effect. You can use a little forced perspective to make the room look taller by using dark wood floors or a dark rug and a ceiling in a lighter shade than the walls.

4. Use heavy, rich, floor-length drapes to add dimension and bring the room together. Theatrical-style drapes made of heavy material do several things. They add some visual "weight" to the room, their folds create vertical lines to emphasize vertical space and they absorb sound to make the surroundings more intimate.

5. Incorporate wrought-iron details. This includes drawer pulls, curtain rods, window shutters, bed frame, mirror frames, candlesticks and light fixtures. Paint them flat or semi-gloss black. The hard wrought-iron will create a lot of dynamic contrast against the heavy drapes and use of hanging fabric that typifies the Gothic style.

6. Keep the room somewhat dim at all times and use indirect accent lighting. All sources of electric light should be subtle and ambient. Strands of mono-color Christmas tree lights work well for this purpose. Accessorize with chandeliers, candelabras and wall sconces. Use candles wherever safe and practical.

7. Choose furniture made of wood with carved accents--the more elaborate, the better. Gothic furniture should look heavy, substantial and purposefully placed. Use velvets and figured brocades for upholstery, bedding, cushions and pillows.

8. Utilize medieval-style tapestries. Add reproductions of medieval art in heavy gilded frames if that suits your particular style of Gothic or one large, elaborate mirror.

Types Of Antique Farm Fencing

The split rail fence has been used on farms for over a century and is common in what once were wooded areas.

Whether you currently have an antique farm fence or you're trying to create a fence that looks antique, an antique fence can bring a touch of history and a sense of continuity to your farm yard. A number of different styles of fence have been used on farms throughout the years, and styles tend to vary by region. Does this Spark an idea?

Split Rail

Perhaps one of the most common types of antique farming fences, historic split rail fences, were originally made from logs split in halves or quarters to form rails and posts. Posts feature notches where the ends of the rails rest. You can usually find split rail fences in places that were once heavily wooded, like the early frontier states. Today, you can purchase split rail fencing in wood or vinyl at most home improvement stores.

Barbed Wire

As settlers and farmers moved further west, the forests of the east disappeared, and farmers had to come up with an inexpensive way to keep their cattle and other animals on their land. Posts were placed 6 to 8 feet apart, and at least two rows of wire were strung from post to post until the fence was complete. After barbed wire was invented at the end of the 19th century, it replaced standard wire in these fence designs. Barbed wire fences are still commonly used by farmers all over the United States.

Stone

If you find a dry-stone stacked fence somewhere in one of the New England states, don't tear it down. It may be an antique and historic landmark. When early settlers first came to the New England area, they built their fences out of stones stacked on top of one another, the way they had in their homelands. The fences were used to do everything from marking a property line to fencing in animals. Today these short, dry stone-stacked fences are protected as historic landmarks in many states, and you can earn a hefty fine if you tear one down.

Install J Bolts In Concrete

Install J Bolts in Concrete

Before pouring concrete you must set in place anchor bolts for your walls, columns or machinery that will be installed on top of your pour. Anchor bolts are J-shaped; the foot of the "J" allows the bolt to anchor itself into the concrete and keep it from sliding out from the weight and tension of what it is holding in place. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Read your project plans to determine the spacing and location of your anchor bolts. If you are preparing to pour the foundation support for a wood framed wall, look for the spacing for a line of J bolts that the sill plate of the wall will be attached to. If you are going to be standing columns or metal framed walls, or bolting machinery or tanks in place on top of a slab, look for the anchor plate locations on the plans.

2. Measure and cut several 2 by 4s so that they can span across the concrete forms. Nail these pieces into place but make sure they are high enough to remain above the level of your concrete pour.

3. Measure and mark the location of the J bolts to be installed. (For a wall support, the mark will typically fall in the center of the form.) Mark the support 2 by 4s and skip to Step 5. For an anchor plate support, go to Step 4.

4. Mark the center of the bolts on your plywood bolt template. (Your bolt template is a piece of wood that is the exact size of the anchor plate of the base of the column or machinery that will be installed on the bolts later.) Mark the center of the bolts on the template and drill bolt holes with a drill and paddle bit. Nail the template onto your 2x4 supports so the center of the template matches the center of the anchor plate that will be placed later. (You will find the center locations on your project plan.) When finished, go to Step 6.

5. Make a mark that is offset from the center of your bolts 1/2 the diameter of the J bolt you will be installing. Nail a long 2 by 4 across the support 2 by 4s so that one edge is lined up on this offset mark.

6. Set your J bolts in your templates. For a wall template, tie the J bolt to the long 2 by 4 at the required spacing for your sill plate. Use tie wire and Linesman pliers to attach the bolt to the 2 by 4. Make sure that the J bolt extends deep enough in the pour to meet your project depth guidelines. For a bolt template, pass the bolt through the holes in the plywood and spin a nut on each bolt to suspend it in the concrete. Check that the bolt extends into the concrete for the required depth.

7. Wrap the threads of each bolt with duct tape. (This will prevent concrete from filling the threads and making it difficult to get the nuts on or off later.)

Interior Design Funky Bedroom Ideas

Rococo trims make a Plain Jane bedroom feel more bohemian.

Leave those perfectly matched bedroom sets and coordinated textiles for catalog spreads or furniture showrooms.Your bedroom decor should reflect the person or people who live in it. Let your imagination run wild when planning bedroom decor. Funky style elements result in a bedroom that has personality. Does this Spark an idea?

Bohemian Modern

The key word in bohemian modern, or "bomo," decor is eclectic. Mix and match eras, finishes, prints, colors and themes to create a funky bedroom that evokes a Parisian art salon or a Gypsy caravan. A beaded Indian sari may cover windows or the bed, and an engraved Moroccan coffee table or a scattering of floor cushions function as a casual sitting and reading area. Toss the mattress directly on the floor and surround it with cascading mosquito nets, or paint a vintage wrought-iron bed frame periwinkle blue and toss paisley, floral and toile cushions on the bed for funky style.

Gothic

A Gothic bedroom can go in several decorations, from Victorian froufrou to urban industrial grit. Black, red, charcoal, silver, gold, burgundy and purple constitute the palette, which may include paint for walls, furniture frames, bedding and accessories. A black wrought-iron chandelier with naked bulbs lends the space some macabre austerity. Cover shelves or cabinets in dark embroidered velvet and line surfaces with candles, candelabras, lanterns or skull imagery.

Tiki

Let an island breeze flow through your bedroom with tiki decor. Dark wood furniture made of teak or rosewood, or painted to emulate it, lend the space a tropical feeling. Outdoor furnishings such as a wicker love seat or a rattan coffee table work well in the space. Surround a low platform bed with sheer panels or, for the feeling of an outdoor bedroom, stalks of bamboo planted in pots. Dedicate an accent wall to a display of carved wooden masks and totemic figures.

Ideas For Old Cast Iron Bells

Some cast iron bells evoke a rustic, Old World feel.

Old cast iron is typically charming. Cast iron bells, in particular, suggest a sense of history and whimsy and make for interesting, and sometimes functional, home decorating. Whether you have bells that are large, small, broken, or in working order, transform them into attractive additions to your home. Does this Spark an idea?

Planting

Turn an old bell upside down and bury it partially in your backyard for use as a garden planter. Bells with cracks and rust holes work especially well for this project due to the drainage the imperfections provide.

Simple Doorbell

If you have a small iron bell that is functional, create an old-fashioned, mounted doorbell to hang in place of a door bell. Mount the bell a few inches away from the wall so that the bell can ring freely. If the bell is not functional, hang it as a decoration.

Wind Chimes

If you have several small iron bells, string them together to make a wind chime.

Affix each bell to a different length of metal chain (available at hardware stores), then string the chains onto a large metal ring for hanging. Adjust the lengths of chain so that the bells hang close together, but do not touch.

.

Climbing Plants

Turn a large iron bell into a frame for climbing plants by wrapping it in chicken wire. Press the wire so that it conforms to the shape of the bell, then pull the wire slightly away from the bell to give plants room to snake between the wire and the bell as they grow. When your climbing plants mature the result is a topiary-like structure.

Tuscan Kitchen Decorating Ideas

Lavender is classic Tuscany.

Tuscan-inspired décor, which includes items such as grapes and wine bottles, is ideal for kitchens. So if you want to bring that feel into your kitchen then choose items reminiscent of the Italian countryside, and don't be afraid to combine the rustic and the elegant, as Tuscan decorating is about combining several types of textures and textiles to create a sophisticated and classic look. Does this Spark an idea?

Grape- and Wine-Inspired Decor

Grape- and wine-inspired décor conjures up images of the Italian countryside, so bring into your home by stringing mini purple and green grape-shaped lights around doorways and windows, which will provide a warm glow during dinner parties. Buy vintage wine and olive oil bottles and paint them with grape and leaf designs, then use them to hold flowers and sprigs of dried rosemary and lavender. Create a customized bulletin board out of wine bottle corks and use it to post grocery and to-do lists. Use an empty wine bottle to hold a candelabra and purple and green candles, which makes a classy dinner table centerpiece.

Rustic Furniture

Use rustic kitchen furniture, reminiscent of Italian country farmhouses. For instance, buy a rough-hewn wood dinner table and decorate it with a sunny yellow or red gingham tablecloth. Hang a wrought-iron chandelier lamp above your kitchen table and use soft lighting to create a relaxed ambiance. An antique wood pie safe will add country charm to your kitchen. Use a vintage table as a center kitchen island to add surface space for chopping, cooking and other kitchen tasks.

Natural Elements

Tuscan décor consists of natural elements, such as stone, ceramic, cotton, marble, pottery, wrought iron and bronze. Accordingly, install a bronze faucet in your sink for instant countryside appeal or replace your cabinet and drawer handles with wrought-iron versions. Use stone tile flooring and marble countertops. Place your silverware in artistic pottery or ceramic canisters featuring rooster, grape or vine designs. Hang organic cotton towels in shades of rustic red, plum or gold, which will be both functional and decorative. For a rustic look, fill terra cotta plant pots with lavender, rosemary, basil and other herbs and store them in your windowsill so they are at your fingertips when you are preparing an Italian recipe.

Types Of Traditional Dining Room Chandeliers

A traditional chandelier can become the focal point of your dining room.

Chandeliers add a formal look to a traditional dining room. Because chandeliers have been a mainstay in dining rooms for hundreds of years, there are many types to choose from. Although chandeliers have been used since ancient Egyptian times, the modern chandelier as we know it was originally invented for French King Louis XIV. The chandeliers in his court held candles; in fact, the word "chandelier" means "candle holder" in French. Today, chandeliers are much more user friendly. With the flip of a switch, your dining room can sparkle with dozens or even hundreds of beautiful lights. Does this Spark an idea?

Candle Chandelier

Candle chandeliers create an intimate ambience.

Before electric lights were common, chandeliers held pillar or taper candles. Some of these candle chandeliers had small lampshades over the candles to keep them from being blown out if a draft blew through the room. Today, many electric chandeliers use this same theme. The light bulbs may be shaped like candle flames, and the bulbs rest on top of thin shafts that look like candlesticks. You may also see little lampshades over the light bulbs. Candle chandeliers add a very formal look to a dining room.

Victorian/Crystal Chandeliers

Crystal chandeliers reflect natural light from nearby windows.

During the Victorian Era (just before the turn of the century), decor leaned toward the highly ornate. To match the heavily decorated fringed draperies and pattern-heavy wallpapers, chandeliers became more complicated. Chandelier makers started adding crystal and glass pendants to hang down from the branches of chandeliers. These crystals reflect the light from the chandelier and cast light off in all directions in the room. Crystal chandeliers have an ethereal look.

Wrought Iron Chandeliers

Wrought iron chandeliers have a heavy presence.

Originating in Mexico, wrought iron chandeliers have a heavier look than crystal or candle chandeliers. Wrought iron chandeliers come in many shapes and sizes. They may have ornate filigrees or be very simple and staid. Some have almost a Gothic look that would work well in a very traditional dining room. Be careful with the size of wrought iron chandeliers because their visual weight can easily dominate a room if there aren't other dark-colored focal points.

Venetian Glass Chandeliers

Venetian glass chandeliers can be quite dramatic.

On the island of Murano in Italy, Venetian glass chandeliers have been made for hundreds of years. Legend has it that a monk in a Benedictine monastery experimented with blowing glass and turned his experiments into chandeliers. The blown glass is combined with swirling metalwork in bronze, gold or silver to create several-tiered designs. The price is usually dependent on how complicated the metalwork is, but genuine Venetian glass chandeliers are very expensive. There are many imitations, however, that are still beautiful and much more affordable.

Make Cool Smoke Come Out Of A Cauldron

Create your own smoking cauldron with dry ice and water.

The smoking cauldron is the quintessential symbol of witches, wizards and haunted Halloween parties. Large cauldrons placed on the lawn create a creeping fog to enshroud gravestones and emphasize spooky lighting. Medium and small cauldrons placed on tables hide goodies in a film of smoke and drip tendrils to the floor. You do not need a degree in wizardology or even chemistry to make cool smoke come out of a cauldron. Make your own bubbling witch's brew at home with a cheap plastic cauldron and some dry ice. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Locate a metal bowl that will fit inside your cauldron. Do not use a glass bowl. The extreme cold produced by the dry ice will cause it to shatter. Heavy plastic is acceptable, but the cold may cause it to crack or warp.

2. Buy dry ice from a grocery store, ice cream shop or Halloween specialty store. A half pound of dry ice will last at least 30 minutes in a medium-sized cauldron. For a 3-hour party you will need at least 3 pounds of dry ice.

3. Keep extra dry ice in the freezer until ready to use. Dry ice typically does not keep for longer than 24 to 48 hours in a home freezer. You can lower the temperature of your freezer, but this may hurt your compressor.

4. Place the metal bowel in the bottom of the cauldron.

5. Fill the bowl at least halfway with water. More water equals thicker smoke, but it also means the dry ice will run out faster.

6. Place dry ice into the water. Wear kitchen gloves or use a washcloth when handling dry ice. Large chunks of dry ice last longer than several small chunks.

7. Cover the bowl with aluminum foil. Poke several holes in the foil. The holes will allow the smoke to exit the bowl and will also protect your guests from splashes and flying chunks of dry ice if the cauldron is tipped over.

8. Set the cauldron in a well-ventilated area. The "smoke" released from dry ice is carbon dioxide gas.

Composite Fencing Vs Vinyl Fencing

Vinyl and composite fencing resist deterioration.

Today's homeowner is no longer limited to wood or wrought iron for functional and decorative fencing. Extruded vinyl and composite fences are available in a variety of colors, sizes and styles to fit any yard. Good-looking and long-lasting, either one of these fences will update your landscape in style. Before choosing between vinyl and composite, it helps to know more about each product. Does this Spark an idea?

Materials

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is the main component of vinyl fencing. Different vinyl fence manufacturers may add impact modifiers and UV inhibitors to increase the life and strength of their product. Vinyl pickets, posts and rails are hollow, and the thicker the vinyl shell, the stronger the fence will be.

Composite fence materials are made from a combination of plastic and wood fibers, extruded and formed into solid pickets, rails and posts. Large posts may be hollow, however. Both composite and vinyl fence systems come with matching gates and accessories, and they are comparable in price, although as the quality of the material increases, so will the final cost.

Although top-end vinyl fences may feature a wood-look surface texture, composite fences more closely resemble actual wood because they contain visible wood fibers.

Maintenance

High-quality composite and vinyl are both relatively maintenance-free. Preformed colors and textures will look as good in five years as they do when you install the fence. Cheaper fencing materials, however, may fade and discolor, so read the manufacturer's warranty against fading before buying.

Because the surfaces of both fence materials are nonporous, it's difficult to paint them later if you want a change of color. Epoxy paint may adhere better to the vinyl or composite, but painting the fence may void the manufacturer's warranty.

Installation

The installation of vinyl and composite fences is similar. Depending upon the manufacturer, the fences will come with posts and various required fasteners. Using alternative installation methods may void the manufacturer's warranty.

Durability

Because it contains some wood fibers, composite fencing is more durable during cold weather, when vinyl can become brittle and prone to cracking upon impact. The thicker the vinyl fencing is, however, the less likely it is to crack. Both vinyl and composite are durable, and both resist deterioration and weathering. Thin vinyl may warp, however, if it expands and contracts with outdoor temperatures.

Display Kitchen Accessories

Display Kitchen Accessories

Functional appliances, objects and utensils make sleek and colorful kitchen accessories. The eye-appealing décor in silver serving spoons, wire whisks, cups and bowls can be displayed without becoming clutter. Group items according to color, function and storage space to create areas of artistic interest in the kitchen and display accessories with style. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Create Scenes with Objects

1. Take an inventory of items with similar purposes. Create a special shelf for bakery items like the flour sifter and ceramic mixing bowls, for example. Attach hooks or wire cradles for measuring cups or spoons and rolling pins.

2. Find items that are all one color and group them on large, decorative trays.

3. Consider a hanging pot rack for copper pots, colored pans and utensils such as spatulas and slotted spoons; add strings of garlic or a garland of chili peppers. Utilizing overhead areas frees counter space and provides a focal point to the room.

4. Use plate racks for fiesta ware or decorative, patterned plates. Cranberry glass or blue willowware plates arranged in racks simulate art pieces.

5. Canisters and cookie jars displayed on the counter are objects in style. Use food as art:Tall jars filled with oil and herbs, clear glass jars filled with assorted pastas or jars of olives or pickles add color and texture.

6. Fill up the corners---corner shelves add space and decoration to bare areas when adorned with baskets or stacks of folded linen.

7. Hanging rods fitted into backsplash areas can be outfitted with hooks and utensils to create easy-reach areas. Magnetic strips used to hold knives work with the same principle, using wall space under cabinets.

8. Use wire racks to introduce extra storage. Wire cribs for glassware and a wire holder for scoops are durable and take up little space. Wrought iron book holders displaying colorful cookbooks add an artistic flair.

9. Mount wine racks and spice racks in blank wall spaces. These create art when filled with colorful bottles of wine and spices. Spice racks are available as lazy Susans, wooden cylinders and traditional wooden racks.

10. Use a wrought iron and marble-topped serving cart to hold plants and flowers when not in use. A cookware stand is a tower of pots in graduated size and fits well in a nook.

Consider a traditional wooden plate rack mounted near a sink for a French Country or Tuscany-style kitchen.

Take Photos Of A House For Sale

Photos of your For Sale home should look like this!

Ever been searching the net looking for a new home and every single picture you see leaves a bad taste in your mouth? Or perhaps the pictures are so redundant that you really don't get an idea of what the house really looks like, or what it can offer you and your family. If you are getting ready to sell your home, keep in mind the pictures you post of your house can make--or break--your chances of a sale. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Get a good, high-resolution digital camera.Sure, those take-n-toss cameras are cheap and easy, but this task requires a camera with a good flash and different settings to truly capture the essence of a room, no matter what its lighting situation is. Digital cameras are convenient so you may go back and retake the picture as many times as necessary to nail that perfect shot. With a digicam you can quite easily see what you are taking a picture of via the display on the back, whereas a disposable camera will leave you, basically, in the dark. Since most of your photos will likely end up on the web for potential buyers to view, resolution is important. Digicams offer different resolution sizes to take the pictures in. This comes in handy if the pictures need to be scaled down--high resolution pictures will not lose their details or crispness this way. Another point of ease: simply take out the storage card in the digital camera and your Real Estate agent can download your pictures directly from it.

2. Tidy up the house. When people are looking at pictures of your home, they are envisioning themselves and their family inside of it. They are trying to picture where their furniture will go, and admire the character different rooms offer. When they see your mess, not only is it unprofessional, but the person viewing the photos will go through them that much quicker so they don't have to see it. This is crucial for rooms that have exceptional features that need to have attention drawn to them--not your personal things lying about. This rule also applies to people; make sure everyone moves out of the pictures completely.

3. Take photos of the house's best features. It's really tempting to just point and shoot at the standard rooms in the house, but remember: every house has bedrooms and a dining room and a living room. It's important to get those shots too, but if your home has exposed beams or wrought iron detailing or fantastic custom tile, be sure to get some snapshots of these things as well. That stained glass window in the stairwell could be just what someone was looking for!Yard shots are also important for the people that have children and pets. Don't neglect the pool, or that big shade tree in the front of your house. Potential buyers want to know how much property they're going to have, or if they'll have to trim hedges, mow lawns, and pay for sprinklers to water the yard. Don't accidentally mislead the public!

4. If you don't think you're up to the task, get a professional. Most real estate agents are more than glad to take photos of your home if you don't feel your capabilities as a photographer are all that commendable. In fact, there are probably a lot of folks out there that would rather not have to deal with the hassle and simply want to sell their house as quickly as possible. Just keep in mind when entrusting this task to someone else that they haven't lived in your house and don't know its special characteristics as well as you do. Going around with them and pointing out the house's key features is recommended.

Remove Rust Stains From A Patio

Lemon

Rust stains are a common problem on concrete patios. As lawn furniture and patio decorations are exposed to moisture, rust stains on patio concrete may result. What Is A Pyramid Bunk Bed

A pyramid bunk bed is a bunk bed design that combines a larger lower bed with a smaller upper bed. Like a traditional bunk bed, there are two beds stacked on top of one another, allowing one person to climb a ladder to the higher bed. A pyramid bunk bed, also known as a mission bunk bed, can accommodate both children and adults. Does this Spark an idea?

Significance

Traditional bunk beds are often designed for children and as such as composed of smaller twin or single-bed mattresses. The pyramid bunk bed allows for people of various sizes to utilize the bunk bed design. The bottom bed is larger and can fit up to two people, while the upper bunk is designed for one person.

Mattress Sizes

This type of bunk bed is designed with a full size mattress on the lower bunk with a twin or single mattress on the top bunk. The bottom bunk is wider and the frame of the bottom bunk extends further out than the top bunk. Some bunk beds may come with two twin mattresses or two full mattresses but in order to be considered a pyramid bunk bed, the upper mattress must be smaller.

Frame Dimensions

According to Bunkbedking.com the average dimensions for a pyramid bunk bed are 69 1/2" high x 81" long x 58" deep. The depth is measured at the widest point of the bunk bed frame, in this case the lower bunk.

Misconceptions

Some bunk bed frames are sold just as a frame and do not include mattresses. With this in mind it is important to determine what size mattresses the pyramid bunk bed frame can hold. Since the traditional pyramid design holds a twin on the top bunk and a full on the bottom, you will need to purchase one of each size if the bed does not come with mattresses.

Potential

If the bunk bed is used with two children, the pyramid design offers a unique advantage for the children. The larger or older child can take the lower bunk bed while the smaller or younger child can take the top bunk bed. Also, the bed is useful for sleepovers as it can allow multiple children to fit on the lower bunk mattress.

Only children can benefit from the pyramid design as well, starting out on the upper bunk and moving down to the lower bunk as they grow. At that time the upper bunk can be removed, used for sleepovers, or as a storage space for lightweight items such as stuffed animals or clothing.

Apply Curtain Rods To A Ceiling For A Canopy

One way to make a canopy over a bed, without the bed having an actual canopy, is to hang curtain rods from the ceiling. A canopy is a creative and romantic way to enclose a bed. Hanging curtain rods from the ceiling to create the canopy works well in an adult or a child's room. Create a fairy tale room for your little princess or add to an elegant d cor in your own bedroom. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Decide where you want to place the bed. If you decide to put it in a corner, position it out from the corner about a foot to allow enough room for the curtain rod canopy.

2. Measure the length and width of the bed. Add 8 inches to both measurements to get the length and width measurements for the canopy. The extra 8 inches allows for the flow of the canopy fabric without interfering with your sleep.

3. Mark out these measurements on the ceiling. Use a chalk snap line to make sure the lines are straight. This will help when hanging eye hooks.

4. Put the chalk marks for the curtain rods on the sides of the canopy out 1 inch farther than the top and bottom measurements. This leaves space for the decorative ends of the rods. Leave a little more space, depending on the size of the knobs at the end of the rods.

5. Make marks where the eye hooks will go, using a pencil. These should be at the ends of the curtain rods, but measure again to make sure.

6. Screw eye hooks into the marks on the ceiling at the four corners of the canopy.

7. Untwist the knobs from the ends of the curtain rods. Thread them through the eye hooks to make sure that you have enough space for the knobs to hang freely.

8. Remove the curtain rods and thread the canopy curtains on them. Re-hang the rods to complete the canopy.

Colonial Williamsburg Bedroom Decorating Ideas

A handmade candle is a great accessory for a Colonial Williamsburg bedroom.

Decorating your bedroom with a Colonial Williamsburg influence is a wonderful way to turn back time to a wonderful and elegant period of American history. From the simple, clean lines of primitive handcrafted pieces to stunning European-influenced pieces, you can have fun finding the perfect balance you want for your bedroom. Add a few classic Colonial accessories and a traditional Williamsburg wall color, and your dream bedroom can become a reality. Does this Spark an idea?

Color

If you have ever visited Colonial Williamsburg or developed your passion for this style based upon what you have learned in school, read in magazines or seen on TV, you know that one of most noticeable portions of this design period are its colors. Most of the colors were taken from nature. With modern technology, though, you can buy your wall color paint based on fact. According to Willie Graham, Colonial Williamsburg's architectural historian, "The use of advanced research techniques has transformed what we know about the paint colors our ancestors enjoyed at the time of the American Revolution. This is a thoroughly documented, exceptionally accurate collection of color." You can buy these authentic Williamsburg paint colors at your local home improvement or paint stores.

Accessories

According to the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation's website, there are numerous licensed manufacturers that make, historically reproduced pieces that can be bought for your bedroom. Some of the designs are exact reproductions from Colonial pieces while others include a small "tweak" to give add a slightly modern feel without straying too far from 18th century design. As an added benefit, for every purchase made through a Williamsburg-licensed manufacturer, a contribution will be made to the preservation, research, and educational programs of The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.

When looking for accessories, look for wrought iron, brass finial, hand-dipped or bee's wax candles, carved nuts, fruits and animals, and handmade bed linens, lace and needlework pillows. Another important accessory is china and crystal that mimics 17th- to 18th-century style.

Furniture

Furniture is another important design element for a Colonial Williamsburg bedroom. When looking for your space, look for darker wood tones with decorative brass drawer pulls. As for a bed, look for a stunning four-poster bed with thin, tall posts topped with a decorative wood finial. You can also buy a stained-wood canopy bed that can be enhanced with Colonial-themed fabrics or lace.

Home Entry Door Styles

Stylish home entry door with glass inserts

Savvy homeowners know a stylish front entry door enhances the curb appeal of your home. A door style can be defined by its size, composition, configuration or surface material--your choices are virtually unlimited. Does this Spark an idea?

Size

Main entry doors are typically 36 inches wide and 6 feet 8 inches to 8 feet high. Narrower doors are available, but under 30 inches is inadvisable--passageways must be wide enough to accommodate the movement of furniture and other large household items.

Composition

Typically, home entry doors are either wood (oak, mahogany, walnut, birch or pine), fiberglass (wood grain or smooth texture), steel (smooth texture) or the combination of several of these materials.

Surface

Flush, paneled (moldings or recesses), glass insert, or panel-and-window combinations are some of the home entry door styles available. Paneled doors have anywhere from one to 10 panels and can be arch-topped, straight or rounded.

Configuration

Single or French doors (double doors), with the use of optional transoms, and sidelights (right, left or both) are a sampling of some home entry door configurations. Sidelights and transoms supply a good source of light into a foyer; and French doors provide a spacious, elegant appearance.

Inserts

Inserts can be as minimal as a glass fan-shape on the upper quarter of the door, to that of a full-glass door. Available as rectangular or oval shaped, glass is offered as clear, obscured, stained, beveled, decorative or patterned. Inserted grilles or muntins, brass or nickel caming or wrought iron are other options.

Cost Of Building A Fence

A fence is something that provides homeowners with a sense of privacy and security. A fence can simply exist to improve the appearance of a home, or it can be put in place to prevent a pet from escaping a yard. No matter what the reason for the fence, building it is something that has costs. Does this Spark an idea?

Size

The size of a fence influences cost. A fence for a larger yard requires more building materials than a fence for a smaller one.

Types

A chain link or ornamental wrought iron fence may incur different costs than a wooden fence.

Considerations

Among wooden fences, a regular wooden picket fence is a bit cheaper per foot than a 6-foot-tall privacy fence.

Significance

For home owners wishing to install their own fence, prices for tools needed would be something to figure into their overall cost.

Options

A vinyl fence is the most expensive fence option to have installed, but it's also the option that requires the least maintenance.

Clean Stove Burner Grates

After every great meal there is always the clean up to look forward to. It takes a little arm power to get those gas stoves cleaned efficiently, especially the stove burner grates. Use the suggestions that follow to help in getting your stove burner grates cleaned up and ready to cook again. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Turn off both the stove top and the oven. Be sure to let them cool completely before starting to clean the burner grates.

2. Remove the burner grates from the stove top. Place them over a newspaper or trash bag and use a scraping sponge or cloth to knock loose any stuck-on food or grime buildup.

3. Soak the burner grates in a dish pan with warm soapy water overnight if necessary. If there is extreme buildup, scrub the burner grates with a paste mixture of baking soda and water. Repeat this several times as needed to remove all the grime buildup. For extreme build-up use a non abrasive kitchen cleanser such as Bar Keepers Friend or Bon Ami. Scrub the grates thoroughly, wash in soapy water, rinse well and dry completely.

4. Try different methods of cleaning the burner grates depending upon your preference. Place the burner grates in a plastic dish pan or even in a plastic trash bag. Spray the burner grates with oven cleaner and let soak overnight. Then, wash, rinse and dry as usual.

5. Put the burner grates in the dishwasher for a really quick and easy clean up. This works best if there isn't too much build up on the burner grates. It is wise to wash the burner grates in the dishwasher alone.

Church Valentine'S Dinner Ideas

A church Valentine dinner can have singles or couples in attendance.

Church Valentine dinners can have a variety of themes. Whether you want your church Valentine dinner to be romantic or scriptural, you have many options. Some dinners are open to anyone, while others are designed for couples. Choose a more informal theme if you are opening your church Valentine dinner to anyone who wants to come, so singles don't feel awkward in a romantic setting. Themes of love don't have to be romantic, and you can alter your evening to include games and skits that don't exclude singles. Does this Spark an idea?

Starry, Starry Night

Use Vincent van Gogh's "Starry, Starry Night" painting as a guideline for your color scheme. Use light and dark blue fabrics that are two different textures, like chiffon and satin, and swirl them together down the center of your tables. Cut stars and moons out of pale yellow and cream foil paper and scatter them across the tables. Wrought iron accents and votive candles soften the room.

Songs of Love

Use a musical theme for your church Valentine dinner with "Songs of Love." Black and white music and musical notes can decorate the table. Add bud vases with red roses and play piano music in the background. Play games like "Name that Tune" and have a pianist play love songs softly in the background.

Letters of Love

For a more Scriptural theme, "Letters of Love" is an option. Use paper that has a watermark or looks like parchment. Purchase a wax seal kit and seal the letters with a deep red seal printed with hearts. Have someone write scripture verses inside of the letters with a calligraphy pen. Focus on the Bible being God's letter of love. This theme is good for a church Valentine dinner that is open to anyone who wants to come, single or couple.

Speaking in Love

Another Scriptural theme, "Speaking in Love" refers to the biblical quote "speaking the truth in love" found in Ephesians 4:15. This is another theme that works well for couples or singles in attendance, because this verse is not referencing romantic love, but brotherly love.

From Paris with Love

Use black and white postcards of Paris strewn in the middle of round tables. Sprinkle red rose petals, purchased from a craft store, around the black and white postcards. Add five or six white votive candles to each table. Eiffel tower votive holders fit the theme and you could use only three or four of them for the whole room, just space them out across the room. On tables that don't have the Eiffel tower votives, use bud vases to hold artificial red roses. French food and music help you feel like you are really in Paris.

Calculate J Coupling Constants

Models of molecules.

Coupling is a scientific term used to describe the interaction between protons. Coupling constant J is a specific way of expressing how these protons behave when this interaction occurs. When the behavior of these protons is mapped out on something called an NMR spectrum, the diagram reveals a series of peaks and valleys representing the strength of the protons' magnetic fields. The distance between these peaks is known as the coupling constant J.

Instructions

1. Gather the necessary data about the molecule. You will require access to measurements indicating the height of the molecule's NMR peaks in parts per million. This information can only be gathered with a nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscope. You will also need to know the strength of the NMR spectroscope in megahertz.

2. Convert each peak's parts per million into hertz. To do this, multiply each peak's parts per million by the strength of the NMR spectroscope. For example, if you had a peak that was measured at 3.632 ppm on a spectroscope operating at 500 mHz, you would multiply 3.632 by 500 to get 1816 hertz. This should be done individually for each of the peaks.

3. Find the difference in hertz between two of the peaks. To do this, subtract the hertz of one peak from the hertz of the other. The difference is the coupling constant J.

Decorate A Rustic Country Home

Look at the Surroundings for Inspiration

The key to decorating a rustic country home is to pull from your natural surroundings. Rustic decorating is all about texture. It's unfinished wood, aged surfaces and rough finishes. It does not have to be uncomfortable, as it includes cushions, pillows and scatter rugs to soften the look. Rustic furnishings and decor allow you to experiment with creative items. It should be warm, welcoming, and a little eclectic. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Choose simple furniture. Look for weathered, antique furniture or buy new and age it yourself. Paint the wood and rub most of it off. Add two to three coats of wax for protection. Pine furniture is a good choice because the soft wood ages easily. For the kitchen table, look for a picnic table style with a bench on one side and ladder-back chairs on the other side. For the bedroom, look for a twig log bed.

2. Expose the floor. A rustic look has bare floors with a few scatter rugs or a large braided rug. Wide pine boards are good choices. Wax the floors or apply a light coat of paint and rub off for a worn look. Stone is another feature for rustic floors.

3. Pick rustic colors. A rustic decor uses earth tones and warm tones. Look for whites, tans, browns, reds, blues and greens. Add colors with pillows, cushions, curtains and dishes in deep reds, blues and greens. Use whites, tans and browns in the rugs and table runners. Add color in the bedroom with a red and green plaid wool blanket for a bedspread.

4. Add detail. A rustic decor is filled with baskets, candles, brass, wrought iron, copper pots, dried flowers and homemade quilts. In the kitchen, display your collection of dishes and pots on open shelves along with your canned vegetables and jams. Display gingham dishtowels and handmade lace table runners for added warmth.

5. Choose lighting. Find a wrought iron or metal chandelier and put it on a dimmer switch. Add wall sconces for additional lighting. Look for kerosene lamps and hurricane lamps for area lighting. Floor lamps and table lamps should be wrought iron, brass or natural wood bases.

6. Bring the outdoors inside. Fill baskets with pine cones. Use birdhouses as decoration on an end table or coffee table. Hang dried flowers from beams or the ceiling.

Fix The Corner Of A Wood Table

Rebuild a missing table corner with water putty.

Square and rectangle wood tables sustain corner damage over an extended period of time. Antique tables often have the sharp edge of a corner worn down to a soft rounded edge. Constant usage or frequent relocation can crack, wear or break away wood table corners. Repair rough corner edges by sanding and touching up the finish, be it stain or paint. Rebuild broken corners with wood putty applied over a frame of wooden pegs. Supplies necessary to fix the corner of a wood table are available at hardware, discount and home improvement stores. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Minor Corner Repairs

1. Sand a cracked, jagged or rough corner with fine-grit sandpaper, following the contours of the corner.

2. Wipe away the sanding residue with a damp sponge.

3. Apply wood stain with a rag or apply paint with a paintbrush, matching the table's finish to the sanded corner. Allow the stain or paint to dry. This repair is more functional than decorative.

Rebuilding an Absent Corner

4. Drill two diagonal holes along the broken edge where the corner should be with a ¼-inch diameter wood drill bit. The holes should face each other as much as possible so two wood pegs can fit within the holes and form a V where the corner should be. The point of the V is formed by the pegs.

5. Twist a wood dowel pin, also known as a wood peg, into each drilled hole. The pins don't have to fit perfectly. If they are too snug, sand the insertion ends a little bit to make for a better fit. These wood pins will form a support frame for the water putty as you rebuild the missing corner.

6. Mix 3 tablespoons of water putty powder with 1 teaspoon of water in a disposable container, such as a clean, recycled margarine tub. Add water a teaspoon at a time until, according to Durham's Water Putty brochure, "Adventures in Water Putty," the water putty powder achieves a dough-like consistency.

7. Scoop a golf ball size dollop of water putty from the container with the end of a putty knife. Use the knife and your fingers to squish the water putty against the broken corner edge and over and onto the wood pin support frame.

8. Mold the water putty so it is about ¼-inch larger than it should be. The edges of the water putty corner should protrude past the table edges. This is to allow for shrinkage. Allow the water putty to dry for 15 minutes.

9. Use a putty knife to cut away the excess putty, forming smooth edges at the corner. Allow the putty to dry overnight.

10. Sand the repaired water putty corner with fine-grit sandpaper. Use a damp sponge to remove sanding residue.

11. Stain or paint the new corner. According to "Fine Woodworking" magazine in the article "Using Wood Putty," water-based putties accept stain well, dry fast and are economical because you mix only what you need.

French Country Exterior Home Ideas

Window shutters help add to the ambiance of the French country cottage look.

French country décor is typically described as a rustic blend of old and new. Family heirlooms sit comfortably together with new furnishings and rich colors are married with earthy natural tones. Move the look outdoors and you start to see features such as aged window shutters and wrought-iron garden furniture. According to houseplansandmore.com, the look was brought from the south of France to the United States in the late 19th century where it became a popular residential look.

Whether you want to achieve the appearance of a grand mansion or a cozy country cottage, the important factor will be a casual and natural looking appearance--like it has been there for 100 years and the surrounding countryside has sprung up around your home. Getting this mix right in your own home requires a careful blend of ingredients. Does this Spark an idea?

Color

French country interiors often match bold colors next to earthy tones. This helps to bring out the rustic ambiance of old next to new. For exterior design, do the same with slightly more muted colors. Use shades inspired by nature such as earth, wood and stone. Warm yellows and reds should match the colors of fall. According to great-home-decorating.com, the shades are "colorful, with sunny yellow, golds, terracotta red, lavender, bright and dark greens and, of course, French blue" with "accents of black and gray." You may prefer to turn this theory on its head and use bright colors as accents and stick to muted yellow and beige shades for the majority of the exterior.

Wrought Iron

The use of wrought-iron furniture and gates helps to add to the feeling of the French countryside of yesteryear. The dark shade of wrought iron blends well with rustic tones of both exterior walls and natural garden schemes, making it a great option for exterior French design.

Garden Furniture

Keep it simple. Opt for tables and chairs in natural tones or wrought iron with a simple table cloth and vase or old bottle for flowers. Accent your home's chosen color scheme with aged-red or terracotta plant pots. Everything should blend well together but not match too closely. Use the same principles that you would for interior French design and marry together old with new for a harmonious rustic look.

Garden

When planning your French country garden, always think natural. Climbing vines, wild flowers and herb gardens are perfect. Avoid too much landscaping as this will detract from the au-naturel look. Use herb and flower window boxes and hand-painted tiles for an extra splash of color on garden walls.

The House

French country design is often marked by the use of brick, stone and stucco on the exterior of the house. A careful blend of rough stucco and stone makes for a natural patched-up look that will make your home appear as if it has been there for 100 years. Add window shutters for a genuine French country look.

Chainlink Fence Costs Vs Wood Privacy Fence

A wood privacy fence is an attractive fence, but is more expensive than a chain-link fence.

Chain-link fences and wood privacy fences can be found in a variety of residential, commercial and industrial settings. There are benefits and considerations offered by both types of fences. Perhaps the biggest differences between the types of fences are cost and the materials used in their construction.

Factors

The cost of a fence is dependent on factors such as material, height and the total length of the fence. Chain-link fencing is commonly available in heights from three to 10 feet. Privacy fencing is typically constructed to a height of six feet. The website costhelper.com claims that fencing in a 50 x 100 square-foot property will require approximately 300 feet of fencing while 1,070 feet will be needed to fence an acre of property.

Price

Chain-link fencing generally costs around $7 per square foot. According to costhelper.com, consumers can purchase 300 linear feet of chain-link fencing for anywhere between $1,800 and $2,500, or between $9,000 and $12,000 for an acre. Wood privacy fencing can cost up to $18 per foot. Three hundred feet of privacy fencing can cost the consumer up to $5,400 or just under $20,000 for an acre.

Installation

Do-it-yourself consumers can complete a chain-link or privacy fencing system installation project with relative ease and little additional help. Costhelper.com claims that professional installation charges alone on a 300-foot chain-link fencing project can run well over $600. Consumers who install privacy fencing themselves can save up to 50 percent on the overall cost of a privacy fence installation project.

Additional Costs

The addition of gating to either type of fencing system can increase the overall cost of the installation project. Removing shrubbery or having to install fencing on difficult terrain or steep slopes can also have a large effect on the overall price of a fence installation.

Other Considerations

Most chain-link fence prices are prone to fluctuate because they reflect the current general price of stainless steel, according to the website servicemagic.com. Using expensive woods like cedar or using pressure-treated woods can increase the overall cost of installing a privacy fencing system.

Install Decorative Hinges For Shutters

Shutters add a country appeal to a house and can be closed to protect windows.

Decorative hinges for shutters are not functional hinges or fasteners for closing and locking shutters but decorative items that display on the outside of each shutter. Merchants sell decorative hinge sets with an S-hook for each shutter. One kit includes hinges, accessories and screws for a set of two shutters, one on each side of one window. The decorative hinges are longer strap type hinges in a black color with matching S-hooks. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure 2 inches from the top inner edge of the shutter to the left of the window and mark with a marking pencil. Measure 3 inches from the bottom inner edge of the same shutter and mark with a marking pencil.

2. Hold one decorative hinge so the top lines up with the top mark on the shutter. Use a drill with a 1/8-inch drill bit to drill a pilot hole through each hole in the hinge and into the shutter. Screw the hinge screws into each pilot hole tightly.

3. Hold a second decorative hinge so the bottom lines up with the bottom mark on the same shutter. Use the drill to make pilot holes. Screw the hinge screws into each pilot hole tightly.

4. Repeat the process for the shutter on the right side of the window.

5. Attach S-hooks at the bottom left corner on the left shutter and the bottom right corner on the right shutter. These attach in the very outer corner of each shutter. Hold the S-hook up to the shutter and drill a pilot hole through the screw holes and into the shutter. Mount with the screws in the kit.

Use A Bedroom Set

These are typical pieces in a bedroom set.

A bedroom set usually consists of a bed, a bureau and an armoire or tall chest of drawers. Sometimes it also includes a nightstand. If you buy a set you won't have the problem of trying to make your bedroom look cohesive. But you may have another problem: Your bedroom may look boring, because it's too matchy matchy. Arrange the furniture in a functional yet aesthetic way, and use accessories to enliven the look of your room. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Position the bed in a place where you can sleep peacefully. Put it in a spot where you can see the door and anyone who's entering the room bbut away from any outside light that interferes with your sleep. If your home is in a quiet neighborhood, and you enjoy night or morning sounds, put your bed next to a window.

2. Place nightstands on both sides of the bed. This will allow you to read at night or put your glasses within easy reach. If your set didn't come with nightstands, choose nightstand made of a different material to break up the look of the room. For example, use low black file cabinets in a room with all-white wood furniture. Or use small wrought-iron patio tables in a room with clean-line cherry and maple furniture. If you're short on space, consider using a plant stand.

3. Position the low bureau with attached mirror directly opposite a window or door. This will allow the mirror to reflect and add light to the room.

4. Move the high bureau or tallboy into a corner close to the closet. This will allow you to pull pieces from the closet and the bureau at the same time. Instead of putting the bureau directly against a wall, angle it against the two walls in the corner to make the furniture arrangement more interesting.

5. Use patterned and matching bed linens and comforters, with lots of pillows if you like them. The patterns mixed with solid colors will enliven the bedroom. Use different window treatments to additionally detract from the matchy-matchy look.

6. Use unexpected accessories to decorate the space. A treasured scarf, a textile from Central America or Asia, ceramics purchased at thrift stores or your children's framed paintings are possibilities.

Give A Modern Look To A Tudor Style Interior

The half timber of Tudor architecture is a common sight in London.

Tudor style originated in England and was in effect from the late 15th to the late 16th century. It's a highly decorative style that creates an atmosphere of imposing grandeur. Tudor style features Medieval-style elements, ornate dark wood furniture, dark wood paneling, deep, bold colors and heavy, richly-patterned fabrics. Modernizing a Tudor-style interior creates a lighter, fresher atmosphere while still maintaining the distinct Tudor design elements for a traditional finished effect with a modern twist. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Paint dark wood paneling with light colors such as rich cream, light mocha or soft pale blue to instantly lighten the atmosphere of the interior. Use a satin or eggshell-finish paint to encourage light to reflect off the low sheen of the surface.

2. Use a light-color wallpaper that complements the color of the newly-painted wall paneling to cover areas of the walls without wood paneling. Choosing an heraldic pattern or a fleur-de-lys print gives an authentic Tudor vibe, but one that is modernized with the light, airy colors.

3. Paint ceiling beams in a light, neutral color to visually lift the ceiling. Maintain the highly decorative aspect of Tudor interiors by applying a light-colored patterned wallpaper to the ceiling in between the beams.

4. Lay antique and traditional-style rugs on the floor, but choose light colors rather than the dark, bold hues of traditional Tudor interiors.

5. Add light colored furniture pieces such as sofas and chairs and accent with traditional Tudor-style dark wood furniture such as solid-looking dressers and dining tables and chairs.

6. Swap the heavy fabrics such as brocade used for window dressings for lighter materials in soft colors that complement the color of the walls.

7. Search antique stores for chandeliers and wall sconces but opt for slightly simpler designs than the highly ornate light fixtures used in traditional Tudor design.

8. Combine traditional accessories such as wrought iron candlesticks, pewter bowls and tankards with more modern accessories such as fresh-cut flowers in glass vases, simple modern photo frames and colored glass bowl centerpieces filled with scented candles and potpourri.

9. Place cushions on sofas and chairs in a range of traditional and modern fabrics and patterns. For example, combine richly-patterned brocade cushions with plain cotton and slightly more modern patterns.

Landscape For Burglar Defense

Low shrubs provide fewer hiding places for burglars.

Landscaping makes your home look appealing, but it also affects your home's security. Burglars target homes that allow them to hide easily and get out quickly. Large, obstructive landscaping gives a thief a chance to break into the home easily without being seen by neighbors or those passing by. An assessment of your current landscaping helps you identify changes to make your home safer. Does this Spark an idea?

Plant Types

Plants that naturally grow low to the ground are ideal for discouraging burglars from entering the home. Plants that are below 2 feet are ideal. A few widely spaced, low bushes add greenery to the landscape without providing a hiding spot for burglars. Flowers also add decoration to the home without providing cover. Add plants with thorns near all of your windows to make access more difficult. Thorny plants are also ideal along fences to keep the burglar from climbing them. If your landscaping includes trees, trim the branches so they don't appear any lower than about 6 feet from the ground to make it difficult to hide there.

Height

The height of elements in your landscaping is another factor. A dense row of hedges may be a safe option if you keep it no more than 2 feet tall so it doesn't provide cover. Keep all hedges and bushes trimmed on a regular basis to keep them low. This is particularly essential near entry points like windows and doors. Trim bushes along the house so there is at least a foot between the bottom of the window and the top of the bushes. Avoid planting tall bushes near the door.

Fencing

Fences provide privacy to your home, but that privacy also makes it easier for a burglar to hide from neighbors or passersby. A wood privacy fence is particularly inviting to burglars since outsiders aren't able to see in at all. A dense row of hedges used as a fence also provides protection for someone who wants to break in. A chain link or wrought iron fence with wide gaps between the slats offers the least amount of protection for a burglar.

Lighting

A well-lit home discourages burglars because they are more likely to be spotted at night. Turn on all of your exterior lights and assess the home from across the street at night. Look for dark areas in the landscaping, particularly around doors and windows. Lights mounted above the garage and by doors add general illumination to the front of the home. Add spotlights or small landscaping lights along pathways and in the landscaping to make it more difficult for burglars to hide there. Light the sides and back of your home as well to discourage entry in those areas.

Build A False Balcony

A false balcony provides a rail in front of a patio or French door on the upper level of a building. It does not provide a floor segment for the person to step onto but provides a safety barrier at the outside edge of the door. The construction process can be as simple as adding a prebuilt wrought iron rail to the exterior wall or it can include a more ornate presentation. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the exterior opening of the door. Include the exterior door trim in the width of the opening. You are determining the distance from the points on each side of the door where railing materials can be firmly attached. This is commonly just outside the door trim.

2. Build a wrought iron rail assembly to this width. Include at each end 90 degree corners that extend the rail about 2 inches to wall mounting brackets. This type of rail can be assembled from wrought iron railing components sold for deck railing or can be built to specifications. Custom builders often produce more ornate products than the kind you can buy to install yourself.

3. Attach the brackets of the railing assembly to the walls. The bottom brackets attach just below the door frame level. Use 3 1/2-inch lag bolts to fasten the railing brackets firmly in place.

Who Invented The Pressing Iron

In 1882 Henry W. Seely patented the electric pressing iron. Before his invention it was very difficult to keep clothes wrinkle-free. Many housewives of the time had to resort to hand pressing, rolling, or even clumsy and dangerous steam and heat irons. Seely's invention made it easier for these housewives to keep their clothes pressed, and he helped revolutionize an industry. Without his electric pressing iron, the laundry business would be an entirely different business today. Does this Spark an idea?

Basic Facts

Henry W. Seely was born July 2, 1854, in Richville, Kentucky. He was married to a woman named Margaret and had three sons, Mark, John and Gintal. He also had two daughters, Jennifer and Marce. Not much is known about Seely other than he invented the pressing iron, and was the witness to the patent of many of Thomas Edison's inventions. He died on Nov. 9, 1908, in Shermer, Rhode Island.

Patent Witnessing

Besides his inventions, Seely has left his mark on history by the sheer number of patents he witnessed. His name appears on over 100 patents in the early 1880s, including Edison's light bulb. He continued to be a witness to patents until 1892.

Business Dealings

Seely kept a third of the rights to his pressing iron patent and sold the rest to Samuel Insul and Richard N. Dyer. Dyer was Edison's patent attorney. This partnership remained for several years. The New York Times named Seely and Dyer as involved in civil suits about some of Edison's patents. Though named in these documents, Seely apparently did not appear in court, as Dyer was the more prominent and well-known of the two.

The Invention

Seely's pressing iron revolutionized the care of laundry. Before his electric pressing iron, it was difficult to keep clothes wrinkle-free. Many hours were spent hand pressing clothes in inefficient and time consuming manners. Some irons used steam or heat in dangerous and impractical ways. Seely's electrical pressing iron harnessed the power of electricity, which was becoming more prevalent in America, and helped streamline laundry care for housewives.

Unsure of His Invention

Seely was a humble man and was quite unsure of the usefulness of his invention. On his patent, he expressed doubts about the practicality of his invention. He wasn't sure that an invention that ran on electricity would work as well as devices that ran on steam or heat energy. The prevalence of electrical pressing irons in every home and in every laundromat has illustrated how misplaced his doubts were.

Characteristics Of A French Cafe

A French cafe provides a relaxing atmosphere.

Transforming a space within your house, or setting up a separate area to invoke a specific sense of style, is done by using characteristics associated with the design itself. A French cafe is a small pastry, coffee and gourmet shop which is designed and decorated to make customers feel at ease, comfortable and at home. You can use the basic characteristics associated with a traditional French cafe to bring a piece of European design into your own home. Does this Spark an idea?

Flooring

Changing the flooring in a kitchen, breakfast nook or small dining room is a first step towards transforming a space in to one inspired by a French cafe. Black and white tiled flooring or checkerboard linoleum is one way to impart a sense of French design in to the area. Using throw rugs to add dashes of color is another method of bringing the French cafe theme to life.

Furniture

Traditional French cafes utilize cafe tables and chairs to elevate guests up higher in comparison to traditional, low-rising table sets. Cafe stools with leather coverings are an option commonly found throughout cafes in Paris. Tall cafe tables, with wrought iron legs and dark wooden or tiled mosaic tops, add an extra element of French design to the space. One characteristic of a French cafe is the preparation area, which can be replicated by using a freestanding kitchen island for housing appliances, cups, saucers and silverware.

Wall Decor and Decorations

Chalkboards, in traditional dark green with white chalk writing, offer a way to bring a French cafe scenario right into your home. Use French words to write out daily menus or simple phrases in French. Additional room decorating ideas to bring the French cafe concept together include floor trees, such as ficus, with white lights wrapped around the pot and branches for soft lighting as well as hanging pendant lights above tables. A few framed prints or pictures depicting Paris, the Eiffel Tower or the French countryside are another way to bring a sense of French cafe characteristics to the overall area. Add cafe-style, short-length curtains to windows as a way to bring the hominess quality associated with a French cafe to the space and hang an inward facing red and white striped fabric awning if space is available for such an added extra touch.

Appliances and Serving Ware

Traditional French cafes are characteristically known for serving an assortment of pastries and coffee-based beverages. Including a noticeable coffee, cappuccino and espresso machine in the space is a way to grab people's attention to showcase the French theme. Additionally, opt for French-inspired cups and saucers in shades of blue, white, red and yellow. Cover tables with coordinating tablecloths and have available linen napkins in the same color scheme to keep the upscale, yet low-key vibe going.
