Strap Hinges

From the Spanish invasion of Mexico, the Hispanic influence mixes in and the two became so closely related that they are at times used interchangeably. The Native American influence is evident in pottery and textile arts. These artistic works were, of course, of a practical nature 200 years ago. Since then, they have also become an integral part of Western interior design.

Features

Native American tradition holds that artistic works are a form of prayer or worship. When these items, such as pottery, are made they are decorated with symbols representative of a belief system. Clean An Old Iron Bed

A cleaned and restored iron bed makes a wonderful showpiece in the bedroom.

An old iron bed from a yard sale, thrift store, flea market or the attic is a great find. Such beds are heavy and well-made, and will provide many more years of enjoyment. Unfortunately, unless the bed has been regularly maintained it is likely to have rust and other dirt that you will need to remove. The investment in cleaning an old iron bed is minimal, since household items such as vinegar and lemons, and a mild detergent are all that is necessary to clean up an old iron bed. Instructions

1. Wipe down the entire bed with a rag moistened in a gentle cleanser to remove dust, dirt and debris. Removing surface dirt will help isolate any rusty areas that need additional cleaning.

2. Rinse the bed by wiping it down with a clean damp rag.

3. Dry the bed with a clean, soft rag.

4. Brush away as much rust as possible with a steel wire brush.

5. Apply vinegar or lemon juice to the rust, saturating the area completely.

6. Wait at least 10 minutes for the vinegar or lemon juice to penetrate and soften the rust.

7. Scrub the rust away with steel wool, taking care not to scratch any brass or painted accessories.

8. Wipe the area clean with a damp rag. Remove as much loosened rust as possible.

9. Apply more vinegar or lemon juice to any remaining rust, and wait 10 to 15 minutes.

10. Scrub the rusted area again with steel wool.

11. Wipe the area clean.

12. Sand away any remaining rust spots with medium grit sandpaper.

13. Wipe away all remaining rust debris and sandpaper residue with a clean damp rag.

Many methods exist for removing paint from wrought iron.

Wrought iron furniture or decor adds an elegant touch to any room. If you've acquired antique wrought iron furniture, and the shabby chic look isn't what you're after, you may have chipped or old paint to contend with. Removing paint from wrought iron is a tedious process but once done, your wrought iron furniture or decorative piece will be ready for display or for a fresh coat of paint. There are many methods by which you can remove paint from wrought iron. Many of these methods involve the use of high-pressure equipment such as sand blasters. Instructions

1. Rubber gloves protect the skin from harsh chemicals.

Place rubber gloves on prior to beginning and keep them on as you use the paint remover. Chemical paint remover can burn the skin.

2. Apply a thick coat of paint remover to the wrought iron using the paint brush. Paint remover in gel form is thicker and stays in place, rather than dripping off the surface it's applied to. Allow the paint remover gel to sit on the wrought iron according to the directions. After several minutes, you'll see the paint begin to bubble, which indicates its readiness to come off.

3. Two of the tools used for paint removal are a paint brush and scraper.

Scrape the bubbled paint, gently, using the plastic paint scraper. Plastic is easier on the wrought iron as metal scrapers can cause permanent scratches.

4. Rinse old paint away using a bucket of water or your hose. Dry the wrought iron with the old rags. If there's a lot of paint left or several coats were applied, you may need to repeat the procedure.

5. A wire brush is a good paint removal tool.

Brush the wrought iron briskly with your wire brush. This will remove any last traces of paint, leaving your wrought iron ready to be used or painted with a fresh coat.

Build A Gate For Your Driveway

Building your own driveway gate is a way to maintain privacy on your property, as well as create a safe yard area for pets or children. A gated driveway can be built for a relatively cheap price, but will require some labor on your part. On average, this project can be completed in about two days, as you will need to wait for the cement posts to stabilize in the ground. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the width of your driveway where the gate will be placed. Measure 4 1/4 inches outward from where the doors will be placed, and mark the area for your posts.

2. Dig a large hole where each post will be placed. The hole should be at least 2 1/2 feet deep and wide enough to hold your post.

3. Place each post in the hole, making sure each post is level and also even with one another.

4. Mix the cement and pour it around each of the posts. Be sure that the posts do not move during the drying process and remain even. (For best results, make sure that the posts are firmly in the ground with dirt surrounding them to prevent movement.) Use quick-dry cement to help the drying process go faster.

5. Lay out the framing stiles for each door. Connect the top and two sides together on each door by screwing them together. Cut the lattice to the exact size desired and put it into place on the top part of each of the two doors, using the screws to keep each lattice connected securely.

6. Connect each middle piece on the two doors by screwing them into the two sides securely.

7. Cut each of your panels to size and screw them into place on the bottom part of the door, below the lattice and middle piece.

8. Connect each of the doors to the post with the hinges, making sure they will swing open 180 degrees.

9. Attach the lock to your doors to be sure they stay in place securely. You may opt to have a lock that secures the doors into the ground (a metal bar is secured to the door and connected to a hole in the ground), making sure they will not swing open, should the lock come undone.

Kill The Anvil Of Void In "Dragon Age"

The "Anvil of the Void" is a mini-boss found in part six of "Dragon Age: Origins." Once you travel to the Deep Roads and find Branka, you are tasked with disarming several traps to reach the Anvil. You must kill a Forgotten Spirit to destroy one face of the Anvil of the Void. The Anvil is defeated once each face is destroyed.

Instructions

1. Walk into the first room after speaking with Branka. Draw the two golems out of the room and kill them, then return and locate the gas valves on the wall to disarm the first trap.

2. Use immobilizing spells such as "Cone of Cold" and "Stone Fist" to stun the two golems in the next room. Assign casters to kill one target before switching to the other. Kill two more golems to disarm the second trap.

3. Ascend the dais in the next room and kill one Forgotten Spirit. Click the glowing anvil next to the spirit to destroy the face of the mini-boss in the center. Wait until the Anvil of the Void spins, then kill each spirit and click the anvils until the faces are destroyed.

7. Attach wash basin drainage end caps to top and bottom ends of railing with epoxy. Wrap with duct tape to hold until epoxy sets.

8. Finish handrail with a laminate or cover with leather. Permanently attach hand rail to wall mountings with screws or nails.

1. Study the three major kinds of Gothic styles--Early English Gothic, the Decorated Period, and the Perpendicular Gothic. Constructing Your Fence

Clean A Security Door Without Removing It

Most security doors are installed in businesses, factories, schools, hospitals, military bases and other types of buildings where safety and security is important. The heavy security doors are usually made from steel and are quite thick when compared to a traditional door. With so many people passing in and out of security doors daily, the doors can become dirty and soiled from filthy hands, clothing, packages, shoes and other items that come into contact with the doors. Instructions

1. Mix 1/4 cup dishwashing detergent with water in a 1-gallon bucket.

2. Dip a sponge in the cleaning solution and wipe down the entire security door. Go over the door two or three times with the sponge to remove the surface dirt, fingerprints and marks.

3. Empty the cleaning solution from the bucket and rinse the bucket with hot water.

4. Prepare a new cleaning solution consisting of 1/2 cup baking soda with water in a 1-gallon bucket.

5. Use steel wool to clean the door with the new cleaning solution. Scrub hard around black marks and other grime on the door. You may need to clean the door more than once to remove all marks.

6. Empty the cleaning mixture from the bucket and rinse the bucket with hot water.

7. Clean the door handle with Windex or any brand of window cleaner and a paper towel. Spray the cleaner on the handle and wipe clean with the paper towel.

8. Repeat these steps to clean the other side of the door.

Refinish Powder-Coated Patio Furniture

Even though a powder-coated finish lasts longer than paint, there will eventually come a time when your outdoor patio furniture needs to be refinished. There are two main ways to refinish powder-coated furniture--strip it and start over, or apply paint over the existing powder. If the original job was properly prepared, it will be difficult to remove a powder-coated finish. One coat of powder is roughly equivalent to three or four coats of paint. Some commercially purchased furniture will only have one light coat of powder, but those powder coated by a reputable shop may have two or three coats of powder. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Look over the current powder-coated finish to decide whether you need to strip the powder or if you can simply paint over it. Is it simply faded? Or are there peeling spots, chips or scratches?

2. If the finish has not been penetrated and you do not see rust spots, you can simply sand the entire surface area to remove dirt and prepare for the new finish. Paint will not stick to powder that has not been scuffed, so make sure to fully sand all of the nooks and crannies.

3. Strip the powder if you find that the current finish is damaged. Try power washing to remove dirt and possibly loose powder.

4. Use a chemical stripper to speed up the process. Use the commercial version that removes up to eight to nine coats of paint, and following the manufacturer's directions. Apply the stripper with a disposable brush, let it sit for the recommended amount of time, and then scrape the residue away. Repeat if necessary.

5. Strip the furniture with a sandblast machine if you have access to one. Note: sandblasting can heat the powder, creating a gummy mess that must be scraped off. The process of removing powder via sandblasting takes practice.

6. Sand the surface of the bare metal or the powder if left intact.

7. Apply a high-quality primer using spray paint or a paint sprayer for a smoother job than you'd get with a paint brush. While spraying, keep the can or sprayer moving to reduce paint buildup and runs. Do two or three passes over the entire surface to ensure a smooth, even coat. You may alternatively use a roller, though it will be difficult to maneuver into tight spaces. Allow the primer to dry.

8. Sand the primer to remove runs, flaws and dust for a smooth final finish.

9. Apply a high-quality paint using a sprayer, if possible, following the manufacturer's directions. Use the same technique used for the primer coat--keep the sprayer moving, and do several light passes. Allow the first light coat to dry, sand lightly, and apply a second coat of paint.

10. Allow the paint to dry and fully cure before you use the furniture. Depending on the type of paint, it may take up to two to three weeks to fully cure. By allowing the paint to cure, you will achieve a smooth, long-lasting finish with no surface imperfections.

You can easily and simply make covers for the cushions on your glider by choosing an outdoor fabric that resists mildew and fading from the sun's ultraviolet rays.

Instructions

1. Choose the fabric you want to use to make your porch glider covers. Iron the fabric before you work on the cover. Place the glider's cushion on two pieces of fabric that have been laid on a flat surface.

2. Draw two lines, one around the edges of the cushion and another around the line you just drew, being sure to add approximately 1/2 inch for the seam allowance. Pin the two pieces of fabric together. Cut along the outer line.

3. Using a 1/2-inch seam, stitch the fabric together, using either a sewing machine or a running stitch. Make sure to leave a back edge gap of about two-thirds of the cushion's width. Turn the cover inside out. Push the cushion through the gap that you left, making sure that the cushion fits the way you want it to. Take the cushion back out, reverse the cover and make any adjustments (if necessary) from the markings you made.

4. Finish the edge with a zigzag stitch, making sure to trim the fabric around the stitch when you are done. Turn the cover to the right side. Press the seams flat. Slip the cushion inside the opening. Hand-stitch the opening closed, using a slip stitch.
