Repaint Metal Light Poles

Paint a light post.

You want the exterior of your home to look as good as the interior. One area of exterior maintenance that many people overlook is the outside light fixtures. Your exterior light fixtures need to be painted about as often as your home, which is about every five to ten years. Painting a metal pole is very straightforward. Choose the right paints and make sure you have a properly prepped surface on which to apply the paint. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Attack rusted areas with a steel bristled brush. Brush vigorously in a back and forth motion to remove as much rust as possible.

2. Sand the rounded part of the pole with coarse grit sandpaper. Work around the pole with the sandpaper. Wipe off the sanding dust with a damp rag.

3. Spray the metal pole with phosphoric acid. The acid will convert any invisible rust to a crust of iron phosphate. Let the solution work overnight.

4. Scrub the metal pole with a steel bristled brush where you see crust. Completely remove all of the iron phosphate crust.

5. Apply oil based metal primer to the light pole. Start at the top of the pole and work down to catch drips as you move. Apply one to two thin coats of primer. Let the primer dry completely.

6. Paint the metal pole with an oil based metal paint, using the same technique used to apply the primer. Apply two to three thin coats of paint, allowing each coat to dry before applying another.

Do It Yourself Bed Headboards

Making your own bed headboard is simple.

If your bed didn't come with a headboard, or came with one you're not crash-hot on, you can make your own bed headboard in under an hour. Floating headboards are easy to construct and hang on the wall like a picture frame, giving you a new headboard to be proud of. The advantage of making a do-it-yourself headboard is that you can choose the design you like, or even match it to your duvet cover or another decor theme in your bedroom. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Purchase an artist's canvas frame the size of the headboard you want. Artist's canvas frames come strung with or without canvas; you want one without canvas, just the frame.

2. Place the frame onto the plywood and trace around it. Cut out the plywood on the traced lines then nail it to the frame with 1-inch nails every 5 inches around the edges.

3. Lay out the foam batting and place the frame and plywood on top, with the plywood side down.

4. Stretch the foam over the sides and onto the back of the frame and staple it in place. Alternate stapling on each side of the frame so that you get an even pull on the foam batting. When you get to the corners, pull the batting out away from the corner, then fold it crisply down at a 45-degree angle on one side of the frame, then tuck and staple the remaining fabric on the underside of the frame; essentially making "hospital corners" on the frame.

5. Iron the fabric you chose for the headboard, then lay it right-side down on the work surface. Place the frame, plywood and batting on top, with the batting side on the back of the fabric.

6. Pull the sides of the fabric over the back of the frame and attach with staples like you did the batting. If your fabric has a pattern or design, ensure it is straight on the front before stapling. When you get to the corners, make "hospital corners" with the fabric like you did with the batting. Cut off excess fabric and batting with the scissors.

7. Locate the wall studs on the wall over the bed where you want to hang the headboard and mark them. Mark the height you want the headboard to hang at also.

8. Cut a length of 1-by-2 lumber about an inch shorter than the inside width of the back of the headboard for a hanging cleat.

9. Position the cleat on the wall where you made the hanging height mark. Use the level to ensure the cleat is straight. Drive two drywall screws through the cleat into each of the positions where the wall studs are.

10. Hang the headboard on the cleat, then drive screws through the top edge of the frame into the wall cleat to attach it securely above the bed.

Make Wrought Iron Signs

Weld the pieces of wrought iron together to create a wrought iron sign.

Designing and constructing wrought iron signs is an endeavor for an individual who has a welding machine and the ability to bend the wrought iron into the desired shapes. Wrought iron is used to create signs, candlesticks, railings, fences and sculptures. The possibilities are endless when it comes to the design of a wrought iron item. The dimensions of a wrought iron sign are determined by the area of placement. Paint or powder coat the sign once it is completed to prevent rusting.

Instructions

1. Draw a detailed sketch of the wrought iron sign. Determine whether the sign is framed or the wording will stand alone. Connect the letters and symbols together for a wrought iron sign that does not have a frame. For example, design a sign with an 18-by-36-inch frame. Draw the letters using straight joints and curves. Add a symbol, such as a moon, to the design. Position the symbol so it does not interfere with the reading of the letters.

2. Measure and mark the wrought iron to the predetermined measurements. Draw a moon shape on a piece of paper that is proportionate to the letters. Cut out the moon shape. Trace around the paper moon on a piece of 1/8-inch steel.

3. Cut the wrought iron with a hacksaw or a plasma cutter on the marked lines. Cut the moon shape from the 1/8-inch steel with a plasma cutter.

4. Clear an area on a concrete floor that is 6-by-8 feet. Make sure all combustible items are removed from the area.

5. Place the four pieces of wrought iron together to form the 18-by-36-inch wrought iron frame in the center of the cleared area. Overlap the ends to create the frame. Weld the four corners together.

6. Position all straight pieces of wrought iron within the frame. Bend the remaining pieces by clamping one end in a bench vise. Roll the metal around a pipe for the desired dimension of the curve. Repeat the process until all curves are complete. For example, a 3-inch curve is desired to create the top of an S. Roll the end of the wrought iron around a 3-inch pipe until the desired curve is achieved. Bending wrought iron is very difficult. The process requires brute strength unless an individual owns a wrought iron bending machine.

7. Position the bent pieces of wrought iron in their proper location. Weld the symbol and letters into place to create the sign.

8. Paint or powder coat the finished sign. Pick a color that is easy to read.

About Flower Bed Edging

Edging around a flower bed not only gives it a tidy, sleek look; it also makes the bed look finished. The character of different edging materials selected enhances or detracts from the flowers and the overall design of the flower bed. When you finish planting your flower bed, make certain you keep these facts in mind when selecting your edging. Does this Spark an idea?

Function

Flower bed edgings help control the outward growth of the plants within it, stopping the spread of vines into the lawn or into other planting areas. Edging a flower bed also contributes to the look of the overall design of the flower bed, and makes it look finished as well as neat and contained.

Types

The edging for a flower bed can be as simple as small rocks picked up from a field and laid on the ground around the outside edge of the flower bed. Bricks can be used instead of rocks, or sea glass or even driftwood. Brick pieces made specifically for edging can be purchased and inserted into the ground with their pointed edge facing upward, giving a zig-zag effect. Different types of fencing are used for edging, as are metal strips that are buried in the ground with only the top portion showing, which controls the spread of vines. Stones or tiles that are covered with mosaics have become popular in recent years. Some flower beds are edged with a very narrow trench in the ground that goes down about six inches and is only about an inch or two wide. This serves to prevent encroachment of growth in either direction.

Features

Materials used to edge your flower beds--the color, the texture and style--add another element of character to your flower bed's design and to the overall look of your home, lawn and garden. For example, pebbles give the look and feel of a country lane. Bricks suggest elegance, substance or urbanity. White picket fencing makes one think of a cottage or even of Tom Sawyer. Black wrought iron fencing imparts the feel of Tuscany or someplace else on the Mediterranean. Select the materials for your edging keeping in mind the overall look you hope to achieve.

Effects

The flowers in your flower bed can be enhanced by the type of edging you select. Simple plants like geraniums, begonias and herbs go well with white picket fencing, pebbles or brick edging. Exotic plants, such as hibiscus, look nice with low wrought iron fencing, tiles or mosaics. Sea grasses look nice with sea glass edgings or seashells. Bring home a sample of the edging you are considering and see how it looks with your plants, as well as with the overall design of your garden, lawn and the exterior of your home. If you have stone or brick on the outside of your home, you may want to incorporate some that match into your flower bed edges for a unified look. Even the narrow trench edging gives the effect of a finished, neat flower bed because it establishes a distinct boundary.

Considerations

Keep in mind that the edging shouldn't be so large or distinctive that it detracts from the plants in the flower bed or makes your garden look cluttered. The flowers are the show; the edging is the functional accompaniment.

Clean A Rusty Cast Iron Pot

A rusty cast iron pot can look hopeless. The sight can make you wonder if it will ever be usable again. Fortunately, in less than a day, a rusty cast iron pan can be reclaimed better than new if you invest a bit of elbow grease to the task. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Wash the cast iron pot in hot, soapy water. This will help remove any loose rust on the pan. Dry thoroughly with paper towels.

2. Use steel wool to scrub away rust that adheres to the inside and outside of the pan. Heavily rusted areas may require several steel wool pads; the scrubbing will destroy the pads. Wash and dry the pan a second time.

3. Use paper towels to coat the inside and outside of the pot will a heavy layer of cooking oil or lard.

4. Lower the top rack of your oven to a height that will allow you to set the cast iron pan inside. Set the second rack to the level just below the top rack. Pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees.

5. Place the greased pot in the center of the oven. Place the cookie sheet on the rack beneath the greased pot to catch drips.

6. Bake one hour; turn off the oven. Allow the pot to cool till you can touch it.

7. Wipe off any excess oil from the pot. The pot is now re-seasoned and ready for use.

What Is Wrought Metal

Wrought iron is a common material for gates and fences.

Wrought metals are those that have been shaped by hammers and other tools, as opposed to cast metals, which are melted into a mold, or extruded metals, which are forced through a die. This is one of the oldest metalworking techniques; the word "wrought" actually comes from a form of "to work," so wrought metal is "worked" metal. This material can be found in a wide range of decorative art objects and consumer products. Does this Spark an idea?

History

According to Sewanee University, beaten copper first appeared in around 8000 B.C., when metalworkers beat elemental copper into soft weapons and ornaments. This material tended to be brittle and required regular reheating. By 5000 B.C., smiths had also begun to work gold and electrum. Metalworkers discovered casting technology during this period. Worked and cast bronze developed around 3500 B.C., and provided stronger, less brittle objects than copper. Wrought iron developed relatively late, in about 1500 B.C. Wrought steel developed around 600 B.C., and did not become widespread for hundreds of years.

Appearance

Wrought metals vary significantly in appearance, but tend to show visible evidence of the tools used to make them. Beaten copper, gold, or other very soft metals may include hammer or file marks. Wrought iron and steel usually show fewer marks, but are less smooth than extruded or cast metal. These tool marks make wrought materials popular in art and decorative objects.

Uses

Worked metal was once the dominant material for everyday objects. Wrought iron was used in nails, chains, wire, rivets, horseshoes, bolts, ironwork, knives and many other objects. Wrought precious metals were common in jewelry and decorative interior fittings, while metals such as tin were often used to make cups, pans and similar household goods. Most modern wrought-metal objects are used for decorative purposes, or are made by individual craftspeople; this metalworking technique is uncommon in commercial manufacturing.

Considerations

Many decorative metal objects, such as gates, wall ornaments and garden ornaments, are labeled as wrought metal. These objects often closely resemble real wrought metal, but may not actually be worked with tools. Mass-produced metal objects are more likely to be cast or extruded, as these processes are less labor-intensive for large manufacturers.

About Wrought Iron Decorative Railings & Balconies

Wrought iron railings have been popular through the ages.

The use of wrought iron for railings and balconies traces its roots back to the Middle Ages, when hand-forging of iron was an everyday occurrence and a smithy was found in every small town. Today's blacksmiths have elevated wrought iron from strictly utilitarian to a genuine art form. Using wrought iron in your home adds a classic sense of style to your decor. A choice of modern or Art Deco wrought iron can point the way to the future while still embracing the fine craftsmanship of the past. Does this Spark an idea?

History

All railings in England were painted black following the death of Prince Albert.

Wrought iron has been used in the building trades since the Middle Ages, because of its strength and flexibility. With the discovery of steel, iron was relegated to the role of ornamental use. Although wrought iron can be painted in any color, black is the most predominant choice. The use of the color black can be traced back to 19th-century England and the death of Prince Albert. All railings in England were painted black as a sign of mourning for the popular prince. Even though choices abound today, with colors from gray to nickel to copper, black remains an overwhelming favorite.

Function

The primary function of a wrought iron surround or railing is safety and security.

The obvious function of wrought iron railings and balcony surrounds is safety. Wrought iron offers a homeowner the strength that only comes with forging of the iron, making it a favorite in homes with small children or the elderly. However, wrought iron proves that safety and security can also be beautiful and can add to your home's value.

Styles

Styles of wrought iron range from simple to complex.

Modern refinements to the basic utilitarian style of iron, such as symmetry of style and curved lines, became evident at the end of the 17th century. The French Baroque fashion, with its swirls and embellishments, swept England in the early 18th century. Today's wrought iron marries the trends of the past with the elegance of the modern era, proving long-lasting beauty. Today's homeowner can select pickets from a catalog or create a custom design working directly with a blacksmith to make a truly unique work. The design should take into consideration the architectural style of the house, the homeowner's individual taste and the budget.

Advantages

Exterior wrought iron railings create an architectural focus.

If the balcony is visible from the exterior, a wrought iron surround can add a dramatic architectural element to your home. Wrought iron is strong and will last a lifetime with very little maintenance. By combining the delicate touch of an artist with the strength and power of a blacksmith, homeowners can create a work of art that is also functional. Wrought iron accentuates the homeowner's good taste by creating an architectural focal point that began with fire, an anvil and a hammer.

Cost

Railings can range from classic to modern.

Wrought iron railings and balcony surrounds are available in a variety of patterns and finishes. Common patterns are twisted, ribbon, hammered, scroll shape, diamond, flowers and leaves. Railings are chosen a picket and a baluster at a time. Obviously, with the variety of choices available, price points vary greatly. The rule of thumb is the more ornate the picket, the more expensive it will be. Custom creations will be even more pricey.

Egyptian Bedroom Decorating Themes

Use Egyptian art for inspiration.

Egypt is a desert country with a rich tradition of sensuous hard wood, sandy browns, tapestries and antiquity. Decorating your bedroom in an Egyptian style brings the richness of history into your private space. Opt for a truly antique Egyptian bedroom with old furniture, authentic artwork and heavy woven rugs, or modernize your Egyptian style with clean lines and sculptural reproductions. Whichever option you choose, aim to create a welcoming space that makes you feel relaxed and at home. Does this Spark an idea?

Paint

Choose colors that evoke the desert. Sandy brown is an obvious choice, but feel free to branch out to deeper browns as well. Offset the walls with gold or deep blue paint on moldings to evoke the azure stones and golden jewelry of Cleopatra. Add some texture to your walls by using a darker base color with a sponge-applied lighter top coat.

Furniture

Repurpose a travel trunk as a bedside table or a bedroom coffee table if you have the space. Aim to reproduce the aesthetic of the archaeologists and Egyptologists exploring the pyramids in the 1920s. Pick up a heavy wood-framed mirror and a dark leather chair. For the bed, choose a frame with simple curved lines. An antique sleigh bed will work well in an Egyptian-themed room.

Art and Artifacts

Display authentic Egyptian art and artifacts if you are a collector, or pick up some inexpensive reproductions that feature Egyptian themes and imagery. Many recognizable Egyptian symbols should be considered, such as the pyramid, the single eye and the bird in profile. Look at hieroglyphics for inspiration. If you are artistically inclined, paint a column of hieroglyphics that spell out an inspirational word or your family name.

Decorate For A Wine Theme

Decorating with a wine theme gives your home a welcoming and elegant look.

A wine theme can give any room in your home a mature and elegant Tuscan-Mediterranean feel. Best in a room used for gatherings, such as a kitchen or a dining room, a wine theme creates a welcoming and relaxing environment for entertaining family and friends. With the use of green, purple and burgundy accent colors on a light color base, along with wine-related objects such as wine bottles, grapes and corks, you can create this theme quickly and easily. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove all items from the walls of the room you are decorating. Make sure you are starting with a blank slate and paint the walls with the terra cotta or warm beige paint. Choose your color based on the size of your room. If you are decorating a larger room, using a darker color will help keep your decorations from becoming lost in the space of the room. If you are decorating a smaller room, using the warm beige will help make the room appear larger.

2. Bring all furniture back into the room once the paint has dried completely. Make sure the furniture is set up exactly how you like it so you can decorate around the main furniture pieces.

3. Hang all wall pieces once the furniture is in place. Any wrought iron decor, pictures or tapestries of vineyards or wine bottles, or wine cork wreaths are appropriate for this theme. Do not hang too much on the walls, however, or it will create a cluttered feeling in the room.

4. Drape the artificial vines over the tallest piece of furniture in the room, such as a tall bookcase. If you do not have a tall enough piece of furniture, arrange the vines over a doorway or around windows. Place smaller pieces of the vines on shelves, next to pictures or in any small area in the room.

5. Place three wine bottles onto a gold decorative plate on a dining table, coffee table or end table and arrange some of the vines and two of the grape bunches around the bottles as a final decoration centerpiece for the room. Place any extra grape bunches next to the small pieces of vines around the room to complete the look.

Make Steel Gates

Almost anyone can make a decorative steel gate.

Adding an iron or steel gate to a driveway or entry can add value and prestige to nearly any house. Ranging from modern, angled styles to fanciful designs, gates can be made to fit any mood or decor. While ornate and dramatic designs are usually the work of skilled artisans using special tools, an attractive and functional gate can be made by a novice for a very small cost and using only a few basic tools. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Determine the general height and width dimensions the gate needs to be. Remember to allow clearance below the gate for it to swing freely, typically six inches.

2. Cut the square tubing to the total height of the gate. Cut four lengths for the two outside edges of each gate.

3. Cut square tubing for the top and bottom sections of the steel gate. You should now have the material to make two rectangles that will be the outside shell of the gate.

4. Clamp the edges of the square tubing. After each corner is clamped, take diagonal measurements from each corner and adjust until the measurements are equal. This ensures a square frame.

5. Measure the inside dimension of the frame. Cut the square bar to this length making sure to cut enough bars so that there is one bar every six inches or so across the grate.

6. Place the bars inside the frame beginning with the center, and placing one in the middle of each remaining section. This process will ensure an equal separation between the bars.

7. Weld the bars to the top and bottom rail. Once every bar is welded, clean up the welds using a disc grinder until the surface is smooth.

8. Wrap wire around the top of the bar connecting it to the top rail. This creates a decorative element and adds more rigidity to the gate.

9. Finish the steel to your liking; flat black paint is the most common finish. Once finished the gate is ready to be installed.

Buy A Whirlpool Tub

Up to your neck in hot water with all this confusion about jets and pumps? Not to worry. Once you choose between an air-jet bathtub and a whirlpool system, your cares will bubble away. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Choose a tub system. In air-jet tubs, air is propelled through dozens of small holes for an all-over bubbling action. In whirlpool tubs, air and water is forced through four to eight large jets for a vigorous massaging action. These powerful jets open, close and swivel to adjust pressure and flow. Smaller jets may cycle along the backrest or target the feet or neck.

2. Figure out where the tub will go. Easiest to install are 5-foot (1.5 m)-long models that slide into your existing tub alcove. Recess-mount tubs fits between walls, which butt against the tub rim. Deck-mount tubs drop into the floor or a platform, requiring a tiled surround. Corner tubs maximize floor space.

3. Make sure your water heater is large enough to fill about twothirds of your tub with warm water. Whirlpool tubs vary in size, holding 25 to 150 gallons (95 to 560 liters) of water.

4. Test size, back support and comfort in showroom models. To accommodate short and tall people, compromise on a tub about 5 1/2 feet (1.7 m) long by 33 to 42 inches (84 to 107 cm) wide. Before buying a giant tub for two, think how often you'll share it, since you'll be paying to heat a lot of water.

5. Weigh your tub options. Enameled cast iron is durable but heavy-- make sure your floor can support it. As for lightweight plastic, molded acrylic resists stains better than sprayed-on gelcoated fiberglass tubs. Easy-care enameled steel tubs come in just a few sizes and shapes.

6. Make sure you have access to the components. All mechanical tubs require maintenance access via an apron or a panel in the tub surround. Whirlpool tubs may require a large opening to reach pipes; air-jet systems need motor access only.

7. Pay attention to the details: Look for protected jets, and sensors that cut the motor if the water is low, so the motor won't burn out. Built-in grab bars and slip-resistant floors add safety. Units with internal water heaters maintain a consistent temperature.

8. Determine if you want a self-cleaning system. Because whirlpool tubs recirculate water, their systems need frequent cleaning. Some air-jet systems automatically purge bacteria-causing residue after each use.

9. Consider your budget. Whirlpool and air-jet tubs sell for anywhere from less than $1,000 to more than $20,000, depending on system, size, materials used and other options.

Best Ideas For An Inexpensive Pool Fence

Inexpensive fencing options such as wood are ideal for pool surrounds.

A fence surrounding a swimming pool is not only a decorative addition to a landscape, but also serves important privacy and safety functions. After professional installation of a new pool, though, homeowners may feel the burden of an empty wallet. Instead of busting the budget even further with an elaborate and decorative fence, consider some budget-conscious options that still provide the same level of function and form for your pool. Does this Spark an idea?

Chain-Link Fencing

Some companies offer vinyl-coated chain-link fences for additional weather resistance.

At about $8 per foot, chain-link fence is one of the most inexpensive options for building a pool fence. Chain-link fences are made of a weave of steel wires that create a sturdy, weather-resistant fence. Some local building codes prohibit chain-link fences around pools because they're easy to breach by climbing, therefore presenting both a falling and drowning hazard; check with your local building inspector before installing a chain-link fence. Another drawback of a chain-link fence is that some homeowners find them unattractive. To add both decorative detailing and additional privacy, plant climbing vines such as Boston Ivy or English Ivy along the fence border. If your budget is slightly larger, consider a vinyl-coated chain-link fence in either black or green; the color is a bit more appealing, and the coating offers additional protection against weather damage.

Wooden Fencing

Place slats close together for the most privacy.

Wooden fences are a common option for yards and pool enclosures, but the style of wooden fencing significantly impacts the price. One of the cheapest options for wooden fencing is a split-post fence comprising several vertical support posts and two or three horizontal connecting board or logs. These farm-style fences are also commonly cited for local code violations, so be sure to check before you build. A split-post fence averages around $9 per foot. If your budget can stretch to $11 to $15 per square foot, opt for a close-slatted picket fence. Picket fences offer more privacy than other types of fencing and they're not likely to cause code violations. Pressure-treated pine boards are the most inexpensive wood option for picket fencing; the boards can be treated with stain for a natural look or painted for a more streamlined appearance.

Wrought-Iron Fencing

Additional decorative details such as curved bars increase the price of wrought-iron fencing.

At the most expensive end of the inexpensive spectrum is wrought-iron fencing. At about $20 per foot, wrought-iron fencing is an expensive option compared to wood or chain link, but custom fencing, aluminum fencing and vinyl fencing are still significantly more expensive than this stock option. The price of a wrought-iron pool fence is largely impacted by the degree of decorative details such as scrollwork or circular separators. To keep costs down, choose simple black wrought-iron fencing with limited flourishes and embellishments. Wrought-iron fences are also ideal for families concerned about safety, because the thin slats allow parents to observe the pool area with an unobstructed view, while the vertical posts prevent climbing.

Brace A Front Porch To Replace Columns

Replacing damaged or rotted support columns on your porch is hard enough work without having to wonder if the roof is going to collapse on you. Don't take chances. By properly supporting the porch roof with temporary but reliable bracing, you can go about your project without worry. The bracing will take an afternoon, and give you as many stress-free working days as you need. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the height from the ground to the eaves under your porch. Then measure on the ground out in front of the porch from one corner, taking the tape measure to half of whatever the height of your eaves was. Put a stake there in the grass. Repeat from the other end of the porch.

2. Measure between the two stakes. If the length is 10 feet or less, measure out from the center of the length, using the same number as before, and put a stake there. If the span is more than 10 feet but less than 15 feet, divide the length by three and put two evenly spaced stakes at the division lines. If you have an extremely long porch, measure out and put down stakes every five feet or less.

3. Measure out from either side of both corners of the porch, at the same number, and put a stake there.

4. At each stake, use your spade to dig a hole eight to ten inches deep, with a flat vertical wall on the side furthest from the porch.

5. Have your assistant get on the ladder and hold the tape measure under the eaves where they meet the horizontal support beam that the columns sit under. Take the other end of the tape to the bottom outside corner of the hole.

6. With your circular saw, cut twice as many 2x6s as there are stakes, at the length of the measurement you just took. On one end of each 2x6, use your tri-square to mark a line from the top corner of the 2x6 to a mark 2-3/4 inches in from the bottom edge. The mark should look like an elongated triangle on the end of the board. Cut each board at that mark.

7. Lay one board on top of another, matching the cut angles. Connect them using pairs of 2-inch screws sunk into the face of the top board, with a pair of screws every two feet. Repeat for all the pairs of 2x6s.

8. Stand your first brace against the porch, with the narrow edges of the joined 2x6s facing up and the cut angle facing toward the porch in a vertical position. Put the uncut bottom into the hole and drive a stake in front of it to help hold it in place.

9. Tuck the angled side of the brace under the eaves, with the cut part pressing vertically against the support beam that meets the columns. Screw the brace into the beam with 3-inch screws, driving them into the side of the board at an angle. Repeat for each brace, until they're all in place. Make sure they're tight. You can now proceed to take out the columns.

Mount House Numbers

Mount your address numbers to your house

No matter how easy it looks, mounting your own address numbers to your house is a task so important that it might intimidate you into hiring a professional to do it for you. Your address numbers are not only necessary for people to find your house, but mounting them is also a legal obligation. Getting an overview of exactly what the project entails is all you need to restore your confidence in the project, allowing you to save money and do it yourself. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Select a visible location on your house to hang your address numbers. This is important because your address numbers are very important for people to find your house. The easier your address numbers are to find, the faster you will receive deliveries.

2. Create a stencil of your address numbers. Arrange your numbers on a piece of paper. The paper size will depend on the size of your address numbers. Fill in the screw holes with a pencil and outline the top, bottom, left and right sides of each number as a point of reference.

3. Hang your stencil where you are mounting your address numbers. If you are hanging your address numbers on siding, skip to step 4. Make sure the stencil is securely in place and is flat against the house. Drill through the screw holes on your stencil using a drill bit 1/32 of an inch larger than the mounting screws. Remove your stencil and clear all debris from around and inside the holes you've just drilled.

4. Cut the numbers carefully out of your stencil keeping the whole piece of paper intact, then discard the cut out numbers and hang the stencil. If you are installing your numbers in brick or concrete, skip to step 5. If you are hanging your address numbers on siding, mark reference points with a pencil onto the siding for the top, bottom, left and right of each number and remove your stencil. Apply industrial adhesive to the back of the numbers and stick them on the siding, making sure to match up the reference points drawn onto the siding. Apply duct tape to the numbers for extra support while the glue dries. Let dry, remove the tape, and it's ready.

5. If you are installing your numbers in brick or concrete, apply industrial adhesive to wall anchors and insert them into the drill holes. Screw the mounting screws into the wall anchors.

Fence A Property

A fenced-in yard can protect your dog from danger.

Fences serve many purposes, including preventing your dog from leaving your yard, preventing other animals from coming into your yard, providing privacy for you and your family and marking the boundary between your property and that of your neighbors. Many fencing options are available, each of which can fill a certain need. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Check with your local zoning board to see which requirements you must follow in constructing your fence and acquire any permits you need. Your local zoning laws may restrict what type of fence you install or how high the fence can be.

2. Hire a surveyor to survey your property. This ensures that the fencing won't be installed on your neighbors' property by mistake or that you won't inadvertently leave some of your property outside the fence line.

3. Discuss the fence with your neighbors. You have no legal obligation to do this, but doing the simple courtesy of informing your neighbors of your fencing plans can prevent hard feelings.

4. Decide which type of fence to install. Choose a material that meets your needs. If your prime concern is privacy or you want a fence that is low maintenance, a vinyl fence may work. If you need to fence in part of your property because you have a pool or you want to let your dogs run free in your yard, a chain-link fence is an economical option. If you want the fence to serve a decorative purpose, a picket fence or wrought-iron fence can be the solution. One thing to consider when choosing the fence is how it fits aesthetically into the surrounding area. For instance, a steel-cable fence may look as out-of-place outside a suburban home as a picket fence looks in front of a row house in the city.

5. Mark the outline of the fence on the ground. Use spray paint or drive wooden stakes into the ground. When laying out the fence line, go around any large, immovable objects such as trees or boulders.

6. Install the fence posts. The exact procedure varies by the type of fence that's being installed, but generally you'll have to dig a hole deep enough to hold at least one-third of the height of the post and set it in concrete.

7. Install the fencing material on the fence posts.

Refinish Metal Patio Furniture

Plastic is easier to clean and store and wood looks more countrified, but nothing beats the charm of vintage metal patio furniture. Here's give it a fresh look. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove rubber tips and cushions (if there are any).

2. Wash furniture with a mild detergent (you'll probably need some rags or a scrub brush) and rinse.

3. Use a wire brush to scrape off rust and loose paint flakes.

4. Look carefully: if paint has bubbled (a sign of rust underneath) use a screwdriver or chisel to break the bubble and chip away the bubbled paint, and then scrape with a wire brush.

5. Remove rust with commercial rust remover.

6. Paint or spray with rust-resistant paint. If the furniture is very corroded, you may want to prime first with rust-resistant primer.

7. Let dry. Plan on 12 to 24 hours for each coat, depending on weather and temperature.

8. Replace any rubber tips and cushions.

Build A Driveway Gate For A Fence

Build a Driveway Gate

Anyone can build a driveway gate for a fence. All it takes is a plan, materials, and some time. Most stores that sell treated lumber for a driveway gate also sell plans. Following these plans are simple and the lumber store will be happy to sell you all the materials you will need. However, there are a few things that you must recognize about the process of building a driveway gate before you begin. Follow these steps: Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Select a design for your driveway gate. Simple straight across slat plans are the easiest. The more curves and designs in your plan the longer it will take to build and the more chances that you might make a mistake. Most lumber yards or hardware stores where you buy wood for your gate will also sell plans for about $20. Be sure that you pick one that is within your abilities.

2. Carefully measure the opening for your driveway gate. Use a tape measure and record the distance between the gate posts and the height of the gate. Remember to consider the height of the existing fence when planning a height to build a driveway gate. These measurements will tell you how much lumber to buy.

3. Cut the lumber for the driveway gate first. Do not attempt to cut as you go. This will lead to uneven pieces. Measure all the pieces of the frame, the slats, and the supports carefully before cutting. Use cut pieces as a guide to cut the rest. Lay it all out on the driveway to make sure it looks right.

4. Construct the frame of the driveway gate. Make sure that the lumber of the frame is thicker than the rest of the wood in the driveway gate. It should be at least 1 1/2 inches thick. Cut a groove down the center for the slats to fit into. Bolt together the top, bottom and short side.

5. Insert the driveway gate slats. These are thinner, flat pieces of lumber that make up the face of the driveway gate. Slide them one by one into the groove cut into the frame. If the driveway gate is cureved, be sure to start with the smaller pieces and work your way up to the larger ones. Once all the slats are inserted, bolt the large end of the frame to the driveway gate.

6. Add supports. Many larger driveway gates have cross beams to add strength. Place them horizontally or diagonally across the slats with the ends touching the frame. Bolt them to the frame then nail them to the slats.

7. Ask a friend to help you hang the driveway gate. This is incredibly difficult to do by yourself. The top of the driveway gate should be even with the top of the fence. There should be a 1/2 inch space between both sides of the driveway gate so they wont touch then they close. There should be at least a 2 inch gap beneath the driveway gate so it swings freely. Attach the driveway gate to the gate with hinges.

8. Add a latch and a lock. Do this only after the gate is hung. The latch should be at a comfortable height so that it can be opened and shut with ease. A gate lock can be added at the bottom of one or both sides of the driveway gate. Drill a hole in the concrete below so that the bolt of the gate lock can slide down into it. This keeps the driveway gate from opening.

9. Decorate and Protect the Driveway Gate

If you purchased finished wood to build your driveway gate, there is no need to do anything else to it. However, if the wood is unfinished or you want it to be another color, you can paint or varnish it. It is best to wait until the driveway gate is complete to do this since the paint or varnish could be damaged during construction.

Make My House An English Tudor Style

Tudor homes borrow elements from English castles.

Tudor architecture in America is based on the architectural style of the Tudor period in England (1485 to 1558), with its rambling castles and country manor houses. Tudor homes, popular in the United States from 1915 through 1940, resemble these Renaissance structures. A Tudor home's exterior features steeply pitched roofs, half timbering and multipane leaded glass windows. Inside, Tudor homes boast heavy paneling, textured walls, opulent textiles and intricate details. When decorating in the Tudor style, include items that reflect its royal history. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Choose your colors. Opt for the deep jewel tones associated with royalty like purple, red and deep green. Highlight your rooms with accents of silver and gold. Tie back sumptuous maroon silk, satin or velvet draperies with gold braided cords with tassels. Toss hunter green, violet, blue, red and black tapestry throw pillows onto a weathered black leather chair. Add gold fringe to draperies and pillows.

2. Put up intricately carved paneling. Opt for dark woods like mahogany and rosewood or stain the wood a dark color. Run it from floor to ceiling or put it halfway up topped with a textured plaster or stucco wall painted a soft shade of white. Choose paneling with a common design popular in the Tudor period like a fleur-de-lis or Tudor rose.

3. Lay wood floors fashioned from wide planks. Stain them a dark color but don't finish with polyurethane. Let them weather naturally like a castle floor. Put down opulent Oriental rugs in jewel tones to define living areas. Center the dining table on one. Use them to anchor conversation areas.

4. Furnish your rooms with heavy, intricately carved pieces crafted from teak, mahogany and rosewood. Opt for more budget-friendly furniture in less expensive, darkly finished wood like oak or pine.

5. Position a stone fireplace topped with an intricately carved wood mantel against an outside wall. Opt for a mantel fashioned from granite or marble. Hang a coat of arms, large tapestry or deer head above it. Opt for a large painting with a hunting theme in an elaborate silver or gold leaf frame.

6. Install wooden beams on the ceilings or expose existing beams. Opt for a carved wood cove ceiling stained to match the woodwork.

7. Light your rooms with sconces fashioned from wrought iron. Hang an intricate wrought iron chandelier from the ceiling in your entry or above your dining room table.

Make Plans For Patio Furniture

Buying the right outdoor furniture will make your patio experience more comfortable.

The patio is a place where you spend memorable moments with family and friends, so choosing the right kind of furniture is important. From the days of the rocking chair, patio furniture has now evolved into a variety of styles from casual to elegant. There are a variety of designs and materials available depending on your budget. Before you buy something, do your research so you won't waste your time and money. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Know your budget. There are many types of patio furniture ranging from very cheap to exceedingly expensive. Check the credit plans that a store offers. In setting your budget, consider how long you want your furniture to last. Quality pieces like cedar or teak furniture last longer, but are more expensive. You may also want to buy a few pieces for a start, and add new pieces over time.

2. Know your design. Your patio design will determine the furniture pieces you will need for your patio. If you have designed your patio with a cooking area, then you need to furnish it with a grill and you may include a refrigerator, sink or any amenity that you desire. If you have designed it as a big entertainment center, your patio can include a TV, but you may have to carry it in and out of storage depending on the weather. You may include a hot tub if your patio space and budget allow it.

3. Determine your style. Decide whether you like the look of wood or wrought iron. Wood materials give you that classic look while plastic pieces lend a casual appearance to your patio. Check out books on patio furniture or visit model homes with patios. You can also visit patio showrooms. These will give you an idea of the different patio furniture pieces available, and help you make a decision on the style you want to adopt.

4. Consider your lifestyle. If you like to spend a lot of time on the patio with family or friends, you may want to choose high-quality patio pieces, such as cedar or teak wood furniture. The cedar wood furniture is built to last with minimum maintenance, and the outdoor teak pieces are highly water resistant, so you can leave them outside permanently. Plastic pieces are cheaper and durable, but do not possess the stunning look of the patio wood furniture. Other weather-resistant options are wrought iron, aluminum and stainless steel.

About Iron Railings

About Iron Railings

Iron railings are a common aspect of a home. Iron is a type of metal and a basic element on the periodic table known for its durability and sturdiness. Thus, iron is an ideal material for constructing a barrier. Plenty of other materials could be used as barriers, such as concrete. However, iron is more economical and, potentially, more aesthetically pleasing. Does this Spark an idea?

Function

Iron railings are primarily placed on balconies and nearby other hazardous areas to prevent people from accidentally falling and injuring themselves. These railings are also often put in place for aesthetic value. Iron railings also can prevent some unwanted debris from landing on a balcony.

Types

Iron railings can come in traditional and ornamental forms. Traditional railings are built practically and economically. Ornamental iron railings often have designs built into them that are separate from the rest of the railing. Other iron railings have bars that come in different shapes such as the spiral shape.

Features

Iron railings are usually 100% iron with few other materials going into production other than paint and zinc. The zinc coats the welds of the iron railing. These railings can come with post caps, base collars, and all sorts of brackets. If the consumer wants, other materials can be incorporated such as wood.

Considerations

Though amateurs can learn to install iron railings, iron railings are often installed by a contractor. The contractor will discuss with you where the iron railing should go. Iron railings are often a semi-permanent aspect of a home that affects the value of the property. They are relatively cheap to maintain compared to wooden railings.

Considerations

Wrought iron railings are weather resistant and versatile. But iron railings might not fit the style of a particular house. Those who are willing to upkeep them might find wooden balconies to be more aesthetically pleasing than less natural-looking iron railings.

Make Outdoor Bar Stools

Imagine a beautiful, rustic wood bar built next to your in-ground pool, lined with four great-looking, handmade wood bar stools. If you enjoy having people over for a festive celebration, yet don't have a place to seat them, worry no more. With a few tips and a little lumber, you can make your own quality outdoor bar stools. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the height of your bar to determine the height of your stools. Be sure there is between 9 and 13 inches between the bar and the seats of your stools.

2. Purchase your wood for your outdoor bar stools at any local lumber supply store. Oak stock is a good wood to purchase. It is durable and attractive. Bring your bar stool measurements with you and have the wood cut on the premises.

3. Buy four 12 by 12 pieces of lumber, one for each bar stool seat. Buy four long, narrow pieces of wood for the legs of each seat and four additional smaller, also narrow, pieces of wood to brace and secure the legs of the bar stools. These are called stretchers.

4. Sand the lumber, making sure it is smooth and ready for primer, stain or paint. Sometimes if you are lucky, you can buy the wood already sanded, treated and ready for use.

5. Use a router to make 2-inch-square cutouts in the four corners underneath the seat. Make sure the cutouts are the same shape and diameter of the bar stool legs. Use a tape measure (or a square) and a sharp pencil to measure the exact placement of your holes.

6. Use the router to make the same 2-inch-square cutouts, one in each leg. It doesn't matter where you place these cutouts on each leg, only that you make them in exactly the same place. After your outdoor bar stools are constructed, you will insert a wood stretcher between each leg to connect the four legs together.

7. Glue each of the four legs into a square in the bottom of the seat. Polyurethane glue is durable and quick-drying. After you place the glue, clamp the legs to the seat and let them dry.

8. Glue a wood stretcher between each leg, connecting the legs together. The stretchers can be made from the same type of wood, or you can be fancy and use wrought iron or another material. The stretchers provide structural support as well as aesthetic value.

Fix Wrought Iron Patio Furniture

Repairing and refurbishing your wrought iron patio furniture is cheaper than replacing it.

Wrought iron patio furniture can give your outdoor area a very classic aesthetic, but while wrought iron is very heavy, it can turn brittle if left untreated. Wrought iron needs to be treated to avoid oxidation (rust), which breaks down the wrought iron and permits breakage, in which case you will need an experienced welder. Wrought iron patio furniture is an investment that brings quality and class to your outdoor area, but your investment will not be worth it if you don't take care of it. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Scrub the piece of furniture with a wire brush. Scrub with enough pressure to remove any flakes. Be careful not to scratch the paint if it is in good condition and you don't want to repaint.

2. Put on your safety glasses and rubber gloves. Dip a piece of fine steel wool into kerosene to remove rust stains (if there are any) after the flakes are gone.

3. Disassemble the furniture, if needed, to get the rust out of the joint areas. Rub the rust off of all the small pieces you may have removed.

4. Apply a coat of liquid wax to the furniture. The wax will help protect your furniture from future rusting.

5. Put your furniture back together. You may need to take the piece(s) to a professional welder if there has been breakage caused by rust.

Use A Clear Over Door Shoe Organizer As A Planter

Use a Clear Over Door Shoe Organizer as a Planter

A Clear Over Door Shoe Organizer can be used for more than just organizing your favorite footwear. This hanging shoe rack offers growing space for up to 12 of beautiful flowers. An over the door organizer is a great idea for planting and displaying your favorite flowers. Hang it on a fence, a porch column, or wherever you want to display a dazzling, unique gardening exhibit! Follow these simple instructions to learn use a clear over-the-door shoe organizer as a planter. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. If you do not already have one, purchase a clear, over-the-door, vinyl or plastic shoe organizer that has pockets. You can buy one of these organizers new for around $10, or if you are fortunate enough to find one at a yard sale or thrift store, you can probably pick one up for a few dollars.

2. Hang the shoe organizer where you intend to leave it. These look great hanging on a fence, on the side of the house, and on porch columns. Consider the types of flowers you will be planting in it and plan accordingly for the right amount of sunlight or shade. You can use nails or screws across the top to hang it securely. Remember that once you add potting soil and flowers to the organizer, the weight will change significantly so be sure to anchor it well.

3. Fill each of the compartments about 2/3 full with your favorite potting soil, leaving enough room for the plants to be inserted.

4. Place one plant or flower into the center of each individual compartment. Add more potting soil to completely cover the roots of the plant. Do not fill completely full with the potting soil, as you need a little bit of room for watering.

5. Water each plant so the soil is moist, but not overly wet. Continue to water as needed and watch the flowers turn this ordinary shoe organizer into a beautiful display of flowers and foliage.

Make Old World Looking Furniture

Old World style can be recreated with new furnishings.

Old World style furniture is oversized, rustic, elegant and weathered. Old World rooms have a collected-over-time look that evokes a Tuscan villa, English cottage or European manor house. You can create this classic, comfortable look even if your home isn't filled with family antiques. Any piece of furniture can be artificially aged to give it an Old World style. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Use an overscaled, imposing piece of furniture such as a tall bookcase, armoire, dresser, farmhouse table or sideboard. Purchase a used piece from an antique mall, flea market or garage sale if you don't already own a piece. Look for interesting architectural details, a rustic quality and sturdiness to keep the Old World look authentic.

2. Sand the piece of furniture to remove the old finish and roughen the surface. This allows the paint to adhere. Remove the dust, lint and grit with a tack cloth.

3. Paint the furniture with a muted tone that complements your room, or a neutral shade such as black or white. Old World rooms typically have a mix of stained and painted furniture from different periods to give them a collected-over-time look. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly, at least overnight.

4. Artificially age the piece of furniture by sanding the corners and any raised edges to remove the paint and expose the wood surface. This step brings out the architectural detail and gives a weathered appearance to the piece. Rub the hardware with steel wool to give it an aged look. Remove all the grit again with a tack cloth.

5. Apply brown stain over the entire piece. The stain will color the sanded edges and details and ''age'' the painted finish. Apply a second coat of stain for a darker look. After the stain is completely dry, coat the top of the piece with polyurethane to protect its finish.

Make My Kitchen Look Like A Bistro

Chef themes are common in bistros.

Instructions

1. Place a decorative wooden or pottery bowl in the center of your kitchen island or to use as a centerpiece on your table. Fill it with faux or real fruit and vegetables, such as bunches of grapes or artichokes.

2. Decide on a theme for your bistro kitchen; some bistros have pictures of a chubby chef, checkered fabrics and roosters, while others may focus on a theme such as coffee. Set decor around the room to enhance the theme.

3. Utilize colorful tile with grape or fruit patterns on it to decorate your kitchen back splash or countertops.

4. Hang pictures on the walls that depict different types of cheeses, wines and fruit or grapevines to enhance the bistro d cor.

5. Place a wrought-iron table and chairs in the dining area of your kitchen. Repaint Wrought Iron Railing

Wrought iron railings.

Wrought iron railings add distinction to any home. The variance in style and color give each railing a one-of-a-kind appearance. Iron Stair Railing Tips

Wroght iron adds real flare to your home.

The term "wrought" means beaten or hammered into shape with tools, and the skill of wrought iron has been around for thousands of years. Wrought iron is tough, easy to paint and rust resistant; it's the metal of choice for stair rails, doorways and gates, to name a few. Does this Spark an idea?

Wrought Iron Designs

The possibilities for wrought iron stair rail designs are almost endless; visit several different manufacturers to see all the choices. While you're there, look through their catalogs and find out all you can from the representative.

Restoring Wrought Iron

Visualize your staircase, then select a design that will blend with it, as well as the decor in the rest of your home. If your home is rustic, don't choose an ultra-modern stair rail. Also keep in mind that you can restore any outdated wrought iron you may have. You can do some of this work yourself; for the most part, however, you must take the wrought iron to a shop.

Safety Issues

Don't choose a stair rail that's either too heavy or too delicate; keep safety in mind. Remember that people using your stairs will depend on the stair rail for support. Consider who will be using your stairs, and choose your design accordingly.

Custom Stair Rails

If you have a special design in mind, have your wrought iron stair rail custom made. Check with manufacturers; many will be glad to work with you on a special design for your home.

Decorate A Kitchen In Tuscanstyle Ways

Tuscan-style kitchens are known for their warm color tones, rustic wood, colorful displays and use of natural materials. Fortunately, you do not need a home in Tuscany, Italy, to incorporate the same designs and decor. Whether you are decorating a brand-new kitchen where you have a blank canvas, or just updating your current kitchen, you can bring a little of Tuscany into the kitchen. Adding Tuscan flair to the room can be done on any budget. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Paint the walls of your kitchen in one of the traditional earthy Tuscan color tones. Tuscan Home 101 lists shades of dark green, dark brown, gold, dark yellow and ochre on the Tuscan color wheel.

2. Upgrade your kitchen cabinets, if your budget permits it, to switch to open cabinets. You can choose cabinets without doors or cabinets with glass doors. Display colorful dishes in the open cabinets.

3. Replace your kitchen table with a large farmhouse-style table, which is traditionally Tuscan. Opt for distressed wood, or wood with a distressed look, for the table.

4. Change out the faucets in your kitchen for bronze or antique copper fittings.

5. Use marble or faux marble for your countertops and floors, if possible. Tuscan kitchens can also have wood floors instead of marble or stone tiles.

6. Display colorful ceramic plates, bowls and containers on your counters and table. Keep with the Tuscan colors when choosing pieces to display.

7. Add a colorful backsplash of mosaic or colored tiles to give the home a Tuscan feel. Alternatively, you can use the tiles for flooring or countertops.

8. Use wrought-iron wine racks, candelabras and lighting fixtures to accent the kitchen. If you have room in your budget to replace bar stools, look for some that incorporate the wrought-iron look.

1. Visit your local auto repair shop. You will find a variety of auto body repair products like Bondo, Rust Bullet, and POR-15. Each can be used to repair vintage aluminum patio furniture. These products are designed to bond with the metal surface, providing structural integrity to rusted, chipped or damaged areas.

2. Clean the entire piece of furniture, paying special attention to areas in need of repair. Soapy water and a scrub brush will work well or you can use a power washer if you have one available. A degreasing cleanser may be used to remove built up dirt.

3. Use a wire brush or a wire brush drill bit to remove all surface rust, damage and paint from the area to be repaired on your vintage patio furniture. Keep in mind that larger chips, cracks or holes will require that you prepare a much larger surface area. Clean the area to be repaired and remove all dust.

4. Adhere wire mesh to the back surface of your aluminum patio furniture with superglue or epoxy if necessary. This step is required for large cracks and holes to repair structural integrity. Allow adequate drying time.

5. Mix body repair paste to the necessary consistency. If you are using Bondo, the branded mixing spatulas are a convenient illustration of the correct end color. Refer to the manufacturer's instructions for the desired consistency. The product should be thick, but remain spreadable. Work on small amounts at one time to avoid it hardening before you are ready to use it. Apply to the cracks, chips or holes in your aluminum porch furniture. Aim to create a fairly smooth surface to reduce sanding and finishing time.

6. Sand the surface smooth using progressively finer grit sandpaper. Clear of all dust and spray paint as desired, using several coats for good coverage on your vintage patio furniture.

4. Paint the restored wrought iron furniture with paint made for metals. Although ordinary wall paint may work for a season or two, for long lasting wear and tear, its best to use paint made specifically for metal.

5. Protect your restored wrought iron furniture with two coats of a topcoat. A reoccurring theme when it comes to restoring wrought iron furniture is to protect it by using the right type of paint. It’s best to find a quality water-based acrylic topcoat that will protect your wrought iron furniture from the elements and future rust.

Decorate A Light Birch Wood Laminate Flooring

Install laminate flooring yourself.

The decision to go with laminate flooring in your home is a practical and attractive one. Laminate flooring gives the appearance of real hardwood floors yet it is much more durable and easier to clean. Unlike hardwood floors, laminate flooring is much more resilient against falling objects and other wear and tear, plus spills and stains are easily mopped up with a damp sponge or rag. Laminate flooring comes in numerous "wood" designs, including light birch, and as such requires darker room furnishings and decor pieces for attractive room contrast. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Use dark-colored furniture on light birch laminate flooring. The dark colors will contrast nicely against the light-colored flooring; go for black leather furniture or dark-colored wooden furniture, though any dark furniture pieces may be utilized. The light color of the flooring will also help reduce the severity of some dark furniture, such as black leather.

2. Put down a few dark-hued area rugs to add further contrast to your light birch laminate flooring. Use oriental rugs featuring deep red, maroon or blue tones, or go for solid-colored rugs in dark colors, such as deep purple or royal blue. Space the rugs at least 2 to 4 feet away from each other to avoid covering up too much of the flooring.

3. Use room accessories and decor pieces in dark hues, such as floor lamps with wrought iron bases or large wooden planters featuring rich, dark colors. Any floor pillows used should feature rich, dark hues, which will also make stains less noticeable than if using light-colored pillows.Umbrella stands used on light-colored laminate flooring should also feature dark colors.

Make Italian Table Centerpieces

Make Italian Table Centerpieces

Create a Tuscan-inspired table centerpiece to enhance a party with an Italian theme. Choose colors, textures and materials reminiscent of the charming Italian countryside, then add elegant touches, such as flowers and candles, with rustic wood and wrought-iron pieces. Use edible items to serve as both decor and appetizers for guests. Create a table scape using elements that can be reused long after the party ends. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Cover the table with an Italian-inspired tablecloth. Set the stage for a rustic Tuscan look by choosing a tablecloth featuring a natural hue, such as burnt orange, sunny yellow, lavender or olive green.

2. Fill a rustic terra cotta pot with a green plant. As a fragrant touch, choose an Italian herb, such as basil, thyme, lavender or rosemary. Place the plant pot in the center of the table.

3. Place wrought-iron candle holders on either side of the potted plant. Fill the holders with tall taper candles that coordinate with the tablecloth. The candles provide ambiance and soft lighting during a dinner party.

4. Add a pop of color by decorating with fresh or artificial fruit. Fill a country-inspired wooden bowl with lemons and limes. Place bunches of green or purple grapes around the potted plant and candles.

5. Set out small wooden or white bowls of green olives. Place a bowl in the center of a round table, or display several bowls down the length of a rectangular table. The olives provide a rustic flair and also serve as appetizers for your party guests.

Find Wholesale Decorating Items

Buying wholesale decorating items can be the best solution when redecorating with a specific budget in mind. By purchasing your decorating items through wholesale-direct home decorating companies, which bypass retailers altogether, you will be able to redecorate your home without spending a fortune. The task can seem challenging though, if you are not familiar with wholesale buying. Follow these steps to make your path to that low wholesale price less complicated. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Research online for wholesale-direct home decorating warehouses that will sell directly to the public. Some wholesalers will only sell to you if you have a resale license or will purchase in quantity. You may want one lamp, but not an entire pallet, so it is important to note whether there is a minimum-purchase requirement. Call each wholesaler prior to visiting their warehouse or showroom and ask for any specific purchasing restrictions.

Additionally, wholesale-direct companies may have different return policies, specific customer service hours and may only be open to the public on certain days. You will gain from the price, but not have all the same benefits as with your local retailer when shopping wholesale.

2. Have your decorating plan in hand. These wholesalers normally carry thousands of items and you can become discouraged when attempting to find exactly what you are looking for. It is best to break down the items you need into categories such as crystal, candles, baskets or paintings.

3. Search for a wholesale buyer's index listing. You will have a vast array of wholesalers to quickly refer and browse through. The index carries a brief wholesaler description with specific details for purchasing products. It also separates each home decorating item they stock into categories to narrow down your search.

4. Examine items you plan to purchase carefully and make sure you buy all that you need at that time. Normally, these collections and items are discontinued merchandise, or may have minor manufacturing flaws. It is very important to ask these questions and check the merchandise thoroughly prior to your purchase. Ask if certain items are in stock or if additional items are available. For example, if you are purchasing lamp shades for a pair of lamps or centerpieces for a dining table and a buffet, purchase the pair or the main piece and its companion at the same time. Redecorating will often call for an extra item or complimentary piece to balance the room and it could be challenging to locate an item which is from a discontinued wholesale lot.

Make Girl'S Headboards

You don't have to be a master crafter to make headboards for girls. With a few craft and building supplies, you can create custom headboards to hang on the wall behind any size bed. Coordinate the style of the headboard with the room's décor and with the girl's personality. For example, young artists may appreciate a chalkboard headboard while princess types may prefer a tufted headboard design. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Attach a section of vinyl fencing or a decorative wrought iron garden gate to the wall behind your girl's bed to make a headboard that fits a garden-themed bedroom. If you use fencing, attach the fence panel between two fence posts and then attach the posts to the wall using wall brackets. Hang an iron garden gate from clamp hooks attached to the wall. Always attach the wall brackets/clamps/hooks into at least one wall stud when hanging heavy objects.

2. Cover a framed canvas panel with strips of ribbon to make a woven headboard for a young girl. Staple the ends of the ribbon to the wood strip on the back side of the panel; attach ribbon strips in a vertical row with the side edges touching. After covering the face of the panel with vertical ribbons, weave strips of ribbon in a horizontal row, over and under each vertical ribbon. Staple the ribbon ends to the wood strip on the back of the canvas.

3. Cover the front of a framed canvas panel with a 2-inch thick section of upholstery padding; cut the padding with an electric knife. Glue the padding to the canvas with spray adhesive, and then cover it with strips of batting that you can staple to the wood strips on the back side. Cover the batting with fabric that coordinates with the décor in the girl's room; staple the fabric onto the wood strip. To add tufting to the headboard, insert a threaded upholstery needle from the back to the front of the canvas and stitch a button onto the front side. Pull the thread taut to make the tufting, then tie the ends together on the back of the canvas. Cover the thread with Duct tape. Attach rows of evenly spaced buttons to the headboard.

4. Cut a piece of plywood equal to the headboard dimensions. Prime both sides and all edges of the wood. Paint one side of the plywood with two coats of colored chalkboard paint to coordinate with the young girl's room. After the paint dries, cut and attach a strand of ribbon to the edges of the perimeter of the plywood with hot glue.

Make Gates For A Princess Castle

Cardboard boxes perfect for converting into play castles.

Play castles are easy to make out of materials like cardboard boxes, shipping tubes and plastic tubs. A gate or drawbridge adds to the authenticity, and sparks the imagination. Build your play castle first with an arched opening, one that is big enough for a child to crawl through. Then, create a wooden-and-iron-look gate that she can open and close behind her.

Instructions

1. Tape a large sheet of large paper over the opening, and trace around the opening so that you have an exact pattern for your gate. Mark the straight line along the bottom as well. Remove your paper.

2. Draw a straight line 2 inches below your bottom line. It should be parallel with the bottom of the gate opening. This extra tab on the bottom of the gate will become your gate hinge later.

3. Cut out your tracing. It should be rectangular at the bottom and arched at the top, with parallel sides.

4. Measure the width of your gate and divide it by an odd number -- five at least. This will give you the width of your gate planks. The smaller the number, the wider the planks will be, and the more sturdy the gate.

5. Draw vertical lines to indicate the planks, using the measurement from Step 4. Color the first plank on the left with a brown crayon. Skip over the next plank. Color in the next plank and skip the one after, until you finish with a colored-in plank on both sides of the gate.

6. Measure the height of the gate and divide the height by three. Mark these on the paper and draw three cross bars across your planks. Color in your cross bars (perhaps in black, to represent iron) to make them easy to see.

7. Cut out the waste paper between the planks and cross bars. This paper becomes the template for your gate.

8. Tape your template on sturdy cardboard. Draw around the outline of your template, both the planks and gaps. Cut out the gate using scissors and a utility knife. Color in the planks and bars, and use markers to draw details on your planks like big bolts and wood grain. Detail both sides of the gate.

9. Fold the cardboard tab under (toward the inside of the castle) along the bottom of the gate, and tape the gate in place. Staple 2-by-4-inch cardboard tabs on the inside of the doorway to hold the gate in place.

Does A Yard Fence Meet Swimming Pool Regulations For Fencing

This short, picket fence would probably not meet most building codes.

Building codes require fencing around swimming pools to prevent pool access by young children and accidental drownings. Generally, municipalities approve fencing around swimming pools according to three criteria: height, spacing between fence slats or bars and presence of self-closing gates. Does this Spark an idea?

Pool Fence Height

The acceptable height of the fence surrounding an outdoor pool ranges from 5 feet to 6 feet. For example, the city of San Ramon, California, requires a minimum height of 5 feet and the city of Chandler, Arizona, requires a minimum height of 6 feet.

Openings Between Slats or Bars

The width of the openings between bars must be small enough to prevent a child from squeezing through. In the city of San Ramon, California, openings in the fence must not exceed 1 3/4 inches in width. Additionally, building codes require the bottom of the fence to be no farther than 4 inches from the ground.

Self-closing Gates

The gates of pool fences must posses two general characteristics: they must close on their own and have a self-closing latch. As such, pool fence gates must have door-closing springs or spring hinges. The fence's gate latch must automatically engage upon contact with the gate. Additionally, the gate latch must be located high enough to prevent operation by young children.
