Repaint Wrought Iron Porch Posts On Older Homes

Restore old wrought iron by properly repainting it.

Wrought iron porch posts on older homes add an old-world charm. Over the years, however, the paint on the wrought iron posts may begin to flake off, and rust might start to form. The posts do not need to be removed. Instead, preserve the beauty of the wrought iron posts by repainting them. Repainting old wrought iron must be done properly to ensure the new paint sticks while preserving the integrity of the iron itself. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Sand off the old, flaking paint from the posts with fine-grit sandpaper. The paint that is still sticking well does not need to be removed; however, sand over it lightly to roughen the surface and allow the new paint to stick. Wear a respiratory mask when sanding off the paint since toxic dust may be released.

2. Remove any visible rust from the posts with a wire brush. Scrub vigorously to effectively remove all of the rust.

3. Clean the posts with a rag dampened with mineral spirits to remove all traces of sanding and paint dust as well as dirt and other grime that may be on the iron. Dry the posts thoroughly.

4. Spray a light coating of an alkyd rust-inhibiting primer onto the posts. Shake the can of primer well, and hold it about six inches from the surface. Press down on the trigger and spray it evenly over the posts. Allow the first coat of primer to dry according to the manufacturer's recommendations, and then apply a second coat. Allow the final coat to dry completely.

5. Spray alkyd enamel paint to the railings in the same manner in which you applied the primer. Apply at least two coats; additional coats may be applied to achieve the appearance you desire. Allow each coat to dry thoroughly before applying the next.

Tips On Gazebos

A wooden gazebo has a classic, natural look that may complement your garden area.

When it comes to adding instant charm to your yard or garden, few options can top a gazebo. Its traditional octagonal shape and wooden finish are often associated with cottage-style gardens, but there are a variety of designs that employ different shapes and materials for pairing with other landscapes. If you are thinking about adding a gazebo to your backyard or garden, keep some basic tips in mind to ensure that you are prepared for the project and get the most out of your finished structure. Does this Spark an idea?

Select the Material

When you think of a gazebo, the image that comes to mind may be of a wooden structure. In many cases, gazebos are made from wood, with cedar and redwood being two of the more common building materials because of durability and resistance to weather conditions. Pressure treated lumber is a budget-friendly alternative. However, there are other materials that can be used to construct an attractive gazebo. For a low cost, low maintenance option, consider a vinyl gazebo. Opt for wrought iron if you prefer a more ornate look. Stone and reinforced concrete are other options as well.

Decide on Construction

In addition to choosing what materials you want to use to build your gazebo, you must decide exactly how you are going to go about the construction. There are several options that you may consider, depending on your preferences and carpentry skills. If you are a fan of do-it-yourself projects, you can build a gazebo from a set of purchased plans. A gazebo kit, which provides detailed instructions and construction materials, is an ideal option if you like the idea of building your own structure but prefer a method that takes the hassle out of planning it yourself. If you are not confident in your woodworking skills, however, you can hire a contractor to follow the plans or assemble the kit. You can also commission a landscape architect to create an original design and have your gazebo built for you, but this is typically the most costly option.

Find the Right Spot

Finding the right location for your gazebo is another important step in the planning process. Gazebos are traditionally placed in a garden, so you may want to place your structure in the middle of your garden where you can enjoy the flowers and greenery as you sit inside. If you have commissioned an original design for your gazebo and want to showcase it, the center of your yard may be the best spot for it. Building it beside a lake, pond or other water feature is an ideal option as well. Consider how far from your home you want to place the gazebo, as well as areas in your yard that might provide particularly attractive views for the structure.

Consider Accessories

While you may be thinking about adding benches or chairs to the interior of your gazebo, there are many accessories beyond furniture that you may want to consider. Wiring your gazebo enables you to install interior lights that allow for night time use of the space, as well as exterior lights that can highlight your structure from a distance when the sun goes down. You can also use electricity to power a blender so you can add a bar to the interior. A speaker system may be plugged into a wired gazebo as well. If you are concerned about privacy, add screens or panels to the sides of the gazebo to partially block the interior from view. Screens have the added benefit of blocking insects as well.

Redo Indoor Wroughtiron Chairs

Embolden your space with a refinished wrought-iron chair.

Versatile wrought iron lends itself to products as diverse as wine racks, curtain rods and, of course, furniture. Although most wrought-iron furniture finds its home outdoors, indoor pieces feature the same durability, resistance to corrosion and timeless, attractive styling. Even amateur do-it-yourself enthusiasts can redo indoor wrought-iron chairs, a process that helps save money by transforming the old and worn into the bold and new. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Bring the chair outside to a well-ventilated area. Lay a drop cloth underneath the chair if you're worried about staining the ground around it.

2. Brush the entire surface of the chair vigorously with a wire brush to remove flaking paint, rust bubbles, buildup and debris.

3. Wipe the chair down thoroughly with a damp sponge. Get into to any crevices, details, holes or moldings on the chair. Allow it to air dry completely.

4. Apply a coat of rust converter evenly with a clean paint brush. Even if there is no rust, this creates a paintable, primed surface. Allow the rust converter to dry for 48 hours. Apply another layer if the chair is particularly rusty.

5. Apply an even coat of oil-based paint in the color of your choice. You can brush the paint on if you prefer a hint of texture or spray on a coat of oil-based spray paint, holding the nozzle about 6 to 8 inches from the surface of the chair. Allow each layer of paint to dry completely. Apply additional layers until the paint is opaque. Allow the final layer to dry completely before returning the chair to the indoors.

Redo A Wrought Iron Bench

Restore a wrought iron bench rather than buying a new bench.

Wrought iron benches, used indoors or outdoors, add a decorative touch to interior and exterior spaces. Outdoor wrought iron benches require refinishing more often than indoor furniture due to exposure to all types of weather conditions. Wrought iron benches are available in many sizes and styles, ranging from clean lines to intricate scrollwork. Choose a paint stripping process based on personal preferences. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Wash the wrought iron bench with warm soapy water to remove dirt, dust and debris.

2. Remove old paint from the bench using a chemical paint stripper, sanding by hand, wire brushing or sandblasting with a light duty sandblaster.

Apply chemical paint stripper to the wrought iron bench according to the package directions, allow the chemicals to break the paint bond, bubble and scrape away with a metal paint scraper.

Use medium-grit sandpaper to sand off old paint and then sand with a fine-grit sandpaper to smooth the surface.

Brush the surfaces of the wrought iron bench with a wire brush vigorously to remove paint and rust.

Rent a light-duty sandblaster and blast away old paint.

3. Wash the wrought iron bench with soapy water to remove dust or chemical residue, rinse well and dry completely.

4. Paint two coats of alkyd rust-inhibitor primer to the wrought iron bench with a foam paintbrush, allowing each coat to dry fully in between, usually two to four hours.

5. Paint two coats of alkyd enamel paint with a foam paintbrush. Allow each coat to dry for four to six hours between applications.

Find Metal Wall Decor

This metal wall hanging makes a striking addition to a home.

Decorating your home usually begins by painting your walls. Because walls collectively represent a large portion of your home's surface area, the paint's color and texture will help to create a specific mood in each room. You also can enhance the room's mood with metal wall décor. Metal wall décor can include forged iron twisted into crazy shapes; metal wall sculptures made from steel; and metal wall plaques made from sheets of steel cut into geometric shapes. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Choose your décor style. Decide on the type of metal wall décor you want. For example, if your home features tropical furniture and decor, you might prefer fish wall sculptures. If your décor tends to be contemporary, abstract wall hangings might appeal to you.

2. Shop at a local furniture store. Along with living room and bedroom sets, furniture stores often carry a good selection of wall décor. Depending on the store's merchandise mix, metal wall décor may be available. Don't forget to check the store's bargain section.

3. Visit a home-décor store. Usually found in medium to larger cities, home-décor stores often carry a large variety of furnishings from around the world. Metal wall décor may include wall hangings, sconces, planters and free-form sculptures. Selection likely will vary by store.

4. Explore a big-box store. In addition to household sundries and groceries, some of these stores carry furniture and home décor. Although décor styles and selection may be limited, prices are usually competitive.

5. Search for online metal wall décor. Several online retailers carry a varied selection of metal wall décor. Depending on the Web site, décor categories might include contemporary, floral, sunbursts, panels and nautical. Abstract or geometrically shaped pieces also might be available.

6. Shop on eBay. The popular auction site usually has a large number of items in the "metal wall décor" category. Many other items are available through eBay stores. Narrow your search by specifying the type or manufacturer of the metal wall décor. Check the site often as listings are added daily.

Do It Yourself Wrought Iron Fences

Wrought iron fences can be installed around gardens.

Wrought iron fences can be installed around your front yard, a garden or around your swimming pool to keep a sense of privacy about your property. These fences are not difficult to install and can be done on your own with the help of an assistant to lift the heavy panels. Before beginning such a project, check with your building codes office to ensure there are no restrictions against building wrought iron fences in your area. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Mark the end and corner points of the fence with stakes, ensuring that you extended 3 feet beyond each end and attach string high enough on the stakes so that the string does not touch the ground. The strings should make a 90-degree angle at each corner due to the extra 3 feet extension.

2. Dig holes for the posts 2 feet deep and 6 inches in diameter and set the posts in the holes to measure the appropriate depth.

3. Mix concrete according to the package instructions and shovel it into each hole around the post, ensuring the post is perpendicular to the ground and against the string line. Shovel in enough concrete so it reaches 4 inches below ground level.

4. Fill in the holes with the dirt you dug from the ground and pack tightly around the posts. Wait a few days for the concrete to set before moving on to the next step. This is important because the weight of the fence can cause the posts to lean over if the concrete has not set enough.

5. Hold the first fence panel between the posts and trim it down with a hacksaw if needed for the panel to fit between posts.

6. Slide the brackets over the ends of the fence panel's horizontal rails and attach them with a power drill, beginning with the top brackets and finishing with the bottom brackets. Repeat until each panel is attached to the posts.

7. Finish the wrought iron fence installation by installing the gate. Wait seven days before installing the gate; if this is not possible, wait seven days before using the gate. To install the gate, bolt the latches onto the adjacent post to match the height of the latch on the gate.

Removing Paint From Cast Iron Stair Railings

If your cast iron stair railings are looking a little shabby with old peeling paint, you may save yourself a lot of money and fix that eyesore yourself. Cast iron is not fragile, so it's hard to damage it if you're careful. Using the right tools and techniques for the job, as well as a little elbow grease, that old railing can be restored to its original iron glory, or be ready for a new, perfect paint job if you prefer. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Use a lead paint testing kit on your railing if your home was built before 1980 and an older paint job may be lurking under newer layers. If you do have lead paint, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends hiring a professional to remove it due to the toxicity of lead paint. Getting lead paint dust in the air is not only a threat to you while you work, but also to everyone living in the house. If there is no sign of lead paint, proceed to remove it yourself.

2. Cover the area under your railing with a drop cloth to catch paint chips and dust. If you are indoors, you may also wish to protect surrounding walls and floors to make clean-up easier. Put on protective eye wear, work gloves and a dust mask to protect yourself as you work.

3. Scrape off any immediately apparent flaking and splintering paint or rust with a stiff wire brush and a hand scraper.

4. Clean the railing with a de-greaser detergent and rags. If outdoors, or if it has not been cleaned and repainted for years, there may be a build-up of dirt, so be thorough in cleaning it.

5. Outfit your electric drill with a strong wire wheel brush attachment. Run your drill, allowing the wire to scrub the metal, to remove as much paint as possible. Work your way down the stairs, scrubbing one section at a time thoroughly.

6. Attack stubborn spots with a heat gun. Using the heat gun according to your manufacturer's instructions, aim the heat at the spots with remaining paint and move it back and forth until the paint begins to soften, bubble and peel. Return to using your hand-held wire brush and scraper to remove the paint. Skip this step if the majority of the paint has already come off with the wire brush wheel.

7. Attach a drum sander to your drill to get into small areas, curves or little chips that the wire brush missed.

The Care Of Black Wrought Iron Furniture

Black wrought iron is a common choice for table material.

Wrought iron furniture is an extremely durable option for both indoor and outdoor furnishing. Outdoor wrought iron furniture usually includes items such as large or small tables, chairs or loungers. Some homeowners also furnish indoors with wrought iron tables or chairs. Black wrought iron is a very common color scheme for the furniture. While it is straightforward to clean and maintain, black wrought iron furniture may be damaged by abrasive cleaning agents. Stick to water and a mild detergent for heavy cleaning, or simply a moist rag for light cleaning. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Moisten a cotton rag lightly with water and wipe down your black wrought iron furniture for light cleaning. Pay attention to detailing, such as swirls or nooks that can easily accumulate dirt and dust.

2. Mix several teaspoons of a mild detergent and water together in a spray bottle and coat the furniture for heavier cleaning. Wipe off with a rag moistened with water and dry with a cotton towel.

3. Spray down the furniture with a garden hose for outdoor cleaning. Spray the mild detergent and water mixture and wipe down with a water-soaked rag. Dry off the wrought iron with a cotton towel.

4. Rub stubborn stains, rust or discolored areas lightly with sandpaper until they disappear. Wipe off the area with a dry rag to remove sanding and paint chip remnants. Repaint the area with black paint.

5. Paint on a clear coat finish, available at paint and hardware stores, over your black wrought iron furniture to protect the surface from peeling, scratching and discoloration. Tape off or remove any non-wrought iron part of the furniture, such as stone or glass tabletops, before painting to avoid damaging the features.

Paint Mesh Wrought Iron Furniture

Recoat the mesh area of wrought iron furniture carefully.

Wrought iron furniture can be intricate and ornate with its shape and design. This type of furniture often features a mesh surface over the seat area or on the back of the chair for support. Because wrought iron requires regular maintenance to control rust and paint chips, you may need to paint the pieces to keep them attractive. By using the correct tools and materials, your furniture should stay in good shape for many years. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Spread the plastic tarp over a well-ventilated work area - outdoors on a day with temperatures between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit would be ideal. Place the wrought iron furniture onto the plastic tarp.

2. Brush the surfaces of the wrought iron with the wire brush to remove loose and flaking paint. Use the steel wool to sand small crevices. Pay special attention to the mesh areas of the furniture, making sure that you rub the steel wool in between each small area of the mesh to sand these surfaces thoroughly. Wipe the furniture down well with the tack cloth to remove dust.

3. Fill the bucket with warm water and add two squirts of dishwashing detergent to the water. Saturate the cleaning cloth with soapy water and wash the furniture thoroughly. Rinse away the soap with plain water and dry the furniture with a towel. Allow the furniture to dry completely before you continue.

4. Shake the can of primer for at least three minutes. Hold the can about 14 inches away from the furniture and begin applying the primer evenly over the surface of the metal. Move the can continuously while you spray. Do not apply so much primer that it begins to drip off the metal surface. Cover the inner surfaces of the mesh area completely with primer. Allow the primer to dry for about one hour.

5. Shake the can of paint for three minutes. Apply the paint over the wrought iron surfaces using the same application technique you used to spray the primer. Use special care to coat the mesh areas evenly and thoroughly. Allow the paint to dry for about one hour and then apply a second coat.

6. Allow the paint to dry on the furniture for 24 hours before using it.

Decorate A Home In The Country

Decorate a Home in the Country

Comfortable and inviting, a country home should get back to basics, with a style that reflects the nature and community around it. A country home gives you a chance to expand your decorating style. Here's get started. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Select subdued paint colors for the walls. The walls in your country home should reflect warm light and create a backdrop for your accessories and furniture. Depending on your country home style--rustic, cottage or Tuscan, for example--you'll want to select rich but muted colors that coordinate with your furniture. Beige, tan, rich brown or sage green may be good paint colors for your country home.

2. Add furniture. Select items that are comfortable and not overly patterned. Match sofas and chairs with large, rustic side tables and coffee tables made of wood. The rustic look also works in kitchens. Use a heavy butcher-block table as an island and a distressed wood table for dining.

3. Toss in some wrought iron. Wrought iron works well in a country home kitchen or bedroom. A wood-and-iron bed frame looks great with an old quilt on top, and wrought-iron curtain rods and candle holders can tie a rustic-looking room together.

4. Accessorize with found items and antiques. A few well-placed collectibles or rustic antiques can add a lot of interest to a room. For example, old butter churns add interest to a kitchen, while an antique train lantern can dress up a family room fireplace mantel. Driftwood and smooth stones from around your home make nice interest pieces in bathrooms and bedrooms.

5. Limit your use of country crafts. Country-style painted boxes, wall art and accessories are available at many flea markets and antique malls, but if you use too many of those items, your home can look kitschy. Use one or two items that reflect other elements in your home. For example, use a rustic painted box with a star on it if you have iron stars hanging on walls or displayed in other areas.

6. Make the kitchen area special. The kitchen traditionally is the heart of any country home, and a little extra effort here will make your home feel more inviting. Use a brighter paint color on the walls and accessorize the kitchen with a display of cookbooks, colorful glass vases, woven baskets, antique pottery and copper pots and kettles.

Create A Mexican Courtyard Garden

Maybe one of the most important elements of any Mexican mission is the charm and elegance of a courtyard garden. Mexican courtyard gardens are characterized by a mix of native and colonial design, desert colors and plants, terracotta and usable plants such as herbs and vegetables. If you would like to create a Mexican courtyard garden of your own, a few tips will help get you started, Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Create your courtyard by laying a patio with ceramic tiles. Classic Mexican courtyards were paved with handmade ceramic tiles, so choose Earth tones for your patio, such as reds, browns and terracottas. You may choose tile with nature designs, such as suns, cacti or leaves pressed or drawn into the clay.

2. Set aside a space in your Mexican courtyard garden for outdoor entertaining. A hand-made brick oven or barbecue is a common feature in a Mexican courtyard, and is usually placed near rustic wood or wrought-iron benches or tables for easy serving of guests. You may also consider a small water feature, such as a fountain made from old terra-cotta pots or a small fish pond to add to your garden atmosphere.

3. Choose outdoor lighting for your courtyard typical of Mexico and the Mission era. You might consider wrought-iron candelabras for tables and other surfaces or Mexican lanterns and sconces made from stamp metal and iron.

4. Use Earthenware and terracotta pots as decoration, candle holders, pots for plants and even incorporate them into your water features. Even today, used and broken terracotta Earthenware is a common feature in Mexican courtyards and gardens.

5. Cultivate fruit-bearing trees, an important element of a Mexican garden. Depending on your climate, you might consider banana, orange, lemon or various nut trees. A small vegetable garden is also a key part of any Mission-style garden, and should include a variety of culinary and medicinal herbs as well as fruits and vegetables.

6. Select from a variety of decorative plants typical to the climate and style of a Mexican courtyard garden. No Mexican courtyard is complete without a variety of cacti and bromeliads, which will add the finishing touch to the design of your garden. You may also consider archways or trellis covered in morning glory or rex-begonia, hanging pots and terracotta Earthenware with ferns, orchids and aloe vera or even a small dahlia tree tucked in a corner.

Recycle Wrought Iron

Wrought iron can sometimes be recycled.

Wrought iron falls under the ferrous metal recycling category, which means that you have two main options: curbside recycling and selling your metal to a salvage yard. Ferrous means "containing iron," so you can follow this policy for cast iron and other products as well as wrought iron. While towns have different ferrous metal recycling policies, you should be able to sell the wrought iron for scrap no matter where you live. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Check your town's ferrous metal recycling policy with a call to the Department of Public Works. Ask if you can recycle wrought iron. If so, do you need to wait for a household collection day or can you recycle it at any time? Do you need to visit a recycling center or can you leave it at the curb?

2. Call local salvage yards, which buy such pieces, and ask for the current price of iron. If your wrought-iron piece is large, ask if the salvage yard will collect it at your house.

3. Another option, especially if your wrought-iron piece is attractive, is to locate antique shops, garden centers or other boutiques that might want the piece for re-use or re-sale; your town's telephone directory can provide a good list of such businesses. Let them know what you have and ask if they are interested in purchasing your piece of wrought iron.

Interior Decorating With A European Motif

A European motif will give your interiors an Old World charm.

A trip through Europe treats you to sights of cobblestone streets and architectural styles that have been around for centuries. Corresponding European decor styles possess a timeless, Old World charm that makes visitors to your home feel as if they are in Tuscany or the south of France. Because the continent has a vast array of decorating styles, you can incorporate elements of various regional designs to create an unforgettable, undeniably European decorating motif in every room of your house. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove any wall-to-wall carpeting in your home and install hardwood flooring instead. Polish the wood floors until they shine with a handheld polisher that you plug in. Place an antique rug, preferably from a specific region of Europe, on the floor.

2. Add a warm texture evocative of areas of Tuscany to the walls with golden-hued paints; use this color scheme in combination with cream trim for a muted and elegant effect. Apply the colors in layers using your sponges to create a warm, grainy quality on your walls.

3. Add furniture from different time periods and regional decor styles. For example, wrought iron furniture is reminiscent of the French country style while dark, heavy, ornately carved wooden pieces are more Gothic. Pair unfinished light-toned wooden furniture evocative of Tuscan-style decor with more elaborately carved Rococo-period furniture that has leaves and scrolls for an eclectic and complementary look.

4. Add fabrics to the room to help bring the motif together. For example, use dark, heavy fabrics, like velvet, in your window treatments and upholstery to give the room a formal and stately Victorian feel. Conversely, light, brightly colored fabrics can be used to give the room a French or even English country-style look.

5. Arrange antique pieces, such as stone or marble busts, antique light fixtures, wrought iron candlesticks and other items, around the room. Use vintage hardware whenever possible. For example, a vintage chandelier and the natural opulence it represents can help pull an Old World motif together.

Put Up A Vinyl Picket Fence

Vinyl picket fencing

If you've ever painted a wooden picket fence, you know it has to be done every year. Depending on the height and length of the fence, the scraping, priming and painting can seem like an endless process. Fortunately, vinyl picket fencing eliminates the need for painting. After installation, the only maintenance you'll ever have to do on a vinyl picket fence is occasional cleaning of dirt and molds that can accumulate on vinyl, especially in hot and humid climates. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the length in feet of the area to be fenced with a measuring tape to get an accurate count of the fencing material you'll need. Subtract 3 feet if you are also purchasing a ready-made gate.

2. Measure the distance between each section of vinyl pickets, and mark that measurement on the ground with stakes or small stones. This is where you will dig the holes for the fence posts.

3. Dig holes for each post with a shovel. Make the hole 30 inches deep and twice the width of the post. For example, if the post is 6 inches wide, the hole will be 1 foot square. Measure the depth for each hole for exact depth to keep the top of the fence on a straight line.

4. Mix concrete mix with water in a 5-gallon bucket, according to the instructions on the package. using a spade to mix it consistently. Set the post in the hole and pour around the post until it's even with the soil line. Adjust the posts until they are plumb and level as the concrete starts to set. Let the concrete dry for 24 hours.

5. Set picket sections after the concrete around the posts is dry. Start with the section farthest to the left and work to the right, snapping sections into place with the interlocking hardware included with the system.

6. Coat the bottom of decorative cap-and-ball tops and post finials with PVC adhesive and press it firmly onto the top of the post until they snap into place. Wipe off excess adhesive at the joins to finish your vinyl picket fence.

Paint My Room Like An Italian Bistro

Achieving an Italian bistro look in home decor

Whether you are trying to recapture a memory from a trip to Italy, you want to honor your Italian culture or you just appreciate the look of an Italian cafe or restaurant, you can paint a room to look like an Italian bistro. Choosing the right colors for a Tuscany or Mediterranean feel is key. Add the right textures, furniture and accessories, and bravo -- your bistro with an Italian flair is ready for your favorite meals. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Research photos of Italian bistros on the Internet, browse through home decor magazines, or visit Italian cafes and restaurants in your local area for design ideas. Take note of colors used, paint techniques on walls, paintings, linens, furniture, flooring, lighting fixtures and other accessories so you will be able to paint your room to effectively resemble an Italian bistro.

2. Choose your wall colors. You want to use bold, warm tones such as terra cotta, burnt orange, deep yellows, olive green, brown or Mediterranean sea blue shades. Avoid using bright or pastel colors, and opt for weathered-looking or muted hues.

3. Paint your walls using painting techniques that add definite texture to your walls. Try a Venetian plaster technique, for example, or purchase textured paints, like a suede finish paint. You can also create texture by adding some sandbox sand to your paint to give it a gritty feel and look. Another option is to use a faux paint finish known as crackled antique plaster. Home improvement stores will often provide workshops on these paint techniques, however, the stores usually offer brochures with step-by-step instructions, and you can also find instructions on the Internet.

4. Paint your countertops using faux painting techniques as well to create a marble look. It is a less expensive alternative to using marble, granite or stone on countertops for that Italian bistro look.

5. Paint your kitchen cupboards and give them a distressed look. First, rub some wax on pieces of the wood cabinets and then paint them in your desired warm color. The paint will not stick to the waxed areas properly. Allow to dry. Using sandpaper, rub over some areas of the cabinet to take a little paint off. This will further create an aged, rustic look. Focus on putting the wax on areas of the cabinets that would wear naturally over time, such as corners and edges. An alternative is to paint one coat of paint on the cabinets and then use a different color as a top coat instead of using wax. Rub through the top coat so that little bits of the contrasting color shows through.

History Of Courting Candles

You may be a new collector or your family enjoys visiting historical sites, estate sales and museums. A collector of historical home- or romance-based items will be able to easily identify a courting candleholder when they see one. Replicas of these romantic and whimsical candleholders can be purchased today. Courting candles can hold significance in modern times as a comical gift for a father of daughters or for married couples to slow down and spend "courting" time together.

Significance

The courting candle was brought out into the family home when a young woman began to attract serious suitors.

The candleholder was set up in the room where the suitor was allowed to visit with the single daughter of the family. The father, mother or other male family member who lived in the home if the father was deceased or at war would determine how long the suitor could visit. The candle, which was dominant home lighting during this time period, would be the timer that provided a quiet reminder and uninterrupted "date" for the couple.

Function

A courting candle was made from wrought iron, tin, pewter or silver. Most courting candleholders were fashioned by a blacksmith or tinsmith. Replicas of these holders found at museum stores and candle product web sites show a wrought iron piece that resembles a loosely coiled spring. A piece of wood sits just under the taper. The unit has a small peg of metal or wood that can be inserted between the coils and into a drilled hole. This keeps the wooden support in place with the candle set on top of it. The candle can be raised or lowered with this wooden piece that is the basic shape of the candle taper bottom.

History

In the 1600s to 1800s, fathers, parents or guardians of a marriageable young lady would allow suitors to visit her in her home. The couple were allowed to visit in a sitting room, parlor or on the front porch. The father would prepare a candleholder called a courting candle or suitors candle and set it up in the area where the couple sat. The father would observe the suitor and decide an amount of time that he felt comfortable with for the man to visit and socialize. The candle height would be adjusted to measure out the time. The candle was raised or lowered with a peg or thumb lever. When the candle burned to the metal at the top of the candleholder it was the firm yet polite signal that it was time for the suitor to bid the young woman good evening and leave.

Considerations

Fathers from high society to the Amish, on to hardworking farmers and fisherman observed this tradition. Daughters learned that they must respect their parents' judgment concerning the men who presented themselves to the family as a potential husband. She had to defer to her father's ability to measure the honesty, character and ability of a man. The couple also learned to use time wisely as they got to know one another, talking, singing and reading together. The suitor most certainly learned how much the parents loved and cared for their daughter's well-being.

Effects

The father also had the choice to snuff out a candle and immediately end the meeting if he thought it was necessary. If the suitor was highly approved, the father would raise the candle to its highest possible point. This would enable the couple to have a longer, yet supervised visit, as was proper at the time. On occasions a father was known to add a second candle to the holder.

On the day of the daughter's wedding the father sometimes passed the courting candle on to his new son-in-law to for future daughters.

Scrape Cast Iron

Hand scraping is considered a lost art among machinists, who in the modern age rely on mechanical methods to get a flat surface. The need for flat surfaces in the past have resulted in the required skill of hand scraping cast iron and metal surfaces, as a flat surface is the basis of a truly accurate and precise system. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Sharpen your hand scraper. Making sure to maintain the angle of the bevel, the hand scraper must be sharpened and honed and kept sharp throughout the entire process.

2. Apply layout dye to the first cast-iron plate. The layout dye must be spread in a thin layer to prevent false information on the location of high spots on the surface plate. If layout dye is not available, blue Prussian oil paint can be used in thin layers.

3. If using a test standard, rub the standard in an even and flat manner all over the surface. What should remain are spots where there is no longer any layout dye. If you do not have a flat test surface, use the second plate instead.

4. Holding the blade at a shallow angle, lightly scrape at the surface of the plate only where the dye was rubbed off. These spots represent the highest spots of the cast-iron plate.

5. Once every spot has been scraped, clean off remaining dye and repeat, using the same plate as the test plate. Continue repeating until the dye comes off cleanly, indicating a flat surface.

6. If you are using three plates, once the first is done, start on the second with the third as test and then the third with the first as test. Repeat the cycle, and you should be left with three testworthy flat plates.

Other Uses For Bar Stools

Bar stools provide more than just a place to sit.

Bar stools are practical items to have in the home. They provide an informal seating area for people to enjoy casual dining or entertaining, and they add that perfect finishing touch to a home bar. They don't take up a lot of space, making them ideal for cramped apartments. However, bar stools definitely have more uses than just basic seating. Does this Spark an idea?

Plant Stand

Bar stools made of wood or wrought iron become perfect plant stands. Bar stools are high enough to create a sort of pedestal for the plant so the plant can be positioned near the window at direct sunlight. Furthermore, because a bar stool is so high, it creates a natural display for the plant.

Small Accent Table

Areas in your home that need small accent tables but don't have the space for them could possibly make due with bar stools. Bar stools made of metal, iron or wood and with perfectly flat seats make suitable small tables, particularly for corners or tight spaces. It gives people a surface to rest a drink upon or to leave a book. Depending on the design, the natural height of a bar stool may make it look like a postmodern style of table.

Projects

Many bar stools have seats that rotate all the way around. Aside from providing kids with hours of enjoyment spinning themselves dizzy, such bar stools can help you complete projects more efficiently. For example, if you're decorating a cake, place it on a spinning bar stool so you can easily turn the cake and add adornments without disturbing it. You can do this with other craft projects: A bar stool can help you complete detailed work around an item that needs attention on all sides and angles. For example, if you're painting or otherwise working on a dollhouse, a spinning bar stool act sort of like a lazy Susan and helps you work all around it.

Cat Stool

If you have a household that includes a feline friend, your cat may enjoy the bar stool as a place to climb and jump upon. Cats often fall asleep in high places, such as bookshelves or cupboards, as hanging out on such areas gives them a sense of security and a place to watch the world go by. Position a bar stool by a window so your cat can see the passing sights from that high vantage point. Alternatively, place it by a lower table so your cat can have fun jumping from one surface level to another. If possible, place a cushion with fabric ties onto the stool to make the spot more comfortable.

Lounge Furniture Ideas

Blend dark furniture with brightly colored cushions to create a natural look.

Whether looking to extend into the back yard to create another living area or you're focused on updating empty space inside so you can have access to an at-home nightclub environment, various options are available. Selecting the right furniture can help emphasize a relaxed or lively zone. Certain colors and shade groupings also allow particular atmospheres when blended with the proper accessories. Does this Spark an idea?

Outdoor Lounging

If you'd like to create a comfortable outdoors living space, establish clearly defined zones. Install a fire pit area and use natural colors---yellow, cream and orange to encourage an old world Italian feel. Green cushioned chaise chairs and wrought-iron tables complement these shades and should be arranged near the fire. Including a wrought-iron dining table and red-cushioned chairs offers guests a chance to enjoy the fresh night air. Red, cream and butter yellow stripes brings warmth and brightness to the zone. Add a picnic table so kids have their own place to gather and play board games and eat the hot dogs and marshmallows they roasted. Use freestanding iron and glass lanterns or overhead paper lights for additional lighting.

At-home Nightclub Lounge Atmosphere

If you want to create a space that you can entertain friends in, utilize lounging benches and chairs you'd typically find in a nightclub. Set the mood with dim lighting and select a palate of colors with complementary shades. If you're looking for a chic, modern, sleek vibe place various white, bubble chairs with deep purple, silver or red cushioning in circles and include a white basin table with glass top. Lay down a silver, black and white circular pattern rug to create zones. Low-back white couches, a silver or steel glass-top bar with wheels and circular based tables in black with glass tops are all functional additions that maintain the look.

Zen Garden Retreat

Create a stress-free outdoor lounge area by utilizing relaxing colors and accessories that reflect an Asian atmosphere. Dark wicker furniture, including chairs with high backs and cushions and short tables with natural or clear tops as well as dark wood benches grouped together offer areas to eat, read a book or sit with a friend and enjoy a cup of tea. Include a pair of chaise chairs for restful naps. Aqua-green, grass green and sandy beige are complementary colors. Include large pillows to rest against as well as small ones for decorative flair. A self-standing gray or Buddhist statue water fountain encourages a serene atmosphere. Situate wood planters on either sides of an "L" shaped bench to bring nature closer. Bowls of water with floating candles and gray stones are also suitable tabletop details.

What Kind Of Light Do You Put On A Vaulted Bathroom'S Ceiling

Recessed lighting provides illumination in a bathroom.

Modern bathrooms are often designed with vaulted ceilings to maximize the visual space in the room. A skylight is often installed to provide additional natural light in the room. If your vaulted-ceiling in your bathroom does not have a skylight and you wish to install a light fixture, several decorative illumination ideas will make your bathroom bright and cheerful. Does this Spark an idea?

Chandelier

A chandelier is an attractive addition to a bathroom design. Due to the long chain and neck of a chandelier, you need a vaulted ceiling to accommodate the size of the fixture. Select a wrought-iron chandelier with exposed bulbs for a country or rustic bathroom design. Opt for a brushed nickel or silver chandelier with glass lamp shades for a modern appeal. Use a traditional chandelier with glass prisms if you want a formal bathroom motif.

Recessed Lighting

If you want to be able to control the amount of light in your bathroom, install recessed lighting with a dimmer switch. Depending on the surface area of your ceiling, you can install two or three recessed lights or a dozen or more to make your bathroom bright and cheerful. A dimmer switch allows you to control the amount of illumination you need depending on the time of day and your personal bathroom preferences.

Ceiling Fan

A large vaulted ceiling in a bathroom allows you to incorporate a ceiling fan into the room design. Select a ceiling fan with lights that face downward to add more illumination in the space. Opt for globes over the lights if you want to diffuse the light to make the bathroom feel warm and comfortable. However, If your vaulted ceiling is high and narrow, do not install a ceiling fan; the ceiling fan will make the space seem smaller and could overpower the small surface area.

Pendant Lighting

Pendant lighting is a common light source for bathrooms with vaulted ceilings. Place a pendant light one to two feet above the mirror over your sink area or six to eight feet above the floor. With a vaulted-ceiling design, pendant lighting expands the size of the bathroom and illuminates the perimeter of the room. Pendant lights come in wrought iron, brushed nickel, brass, silver and painted materials, with one or more bulbs, so you can choose a design that fits with your bathroom motif. An advantage to pendant lighting is that you can use it even if you have skylights. You can also install a dimmer switch to control the amount of illumination in the room.

Put Bed Rails On An Iron Bed

The safest bed rails are those that come as part of the bed or as a freestanding frame that fits around it. If unable to use either of those, you can improvise bed rails by mounting them directly to the frame of the bed. Attaching rails to an iron bed is especially challenging, but most people can accomplish this successfully without resorting to welding. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the height of your bed rails and the distance from the top of the mattress support to the top of the mattress. Confirm that your rails will extend at least 6 inches above the top of the mattress. If not, you need taller rails (or a thinner mattress).

2. Remove the mattress from the bed frame.

3. Locate the points where you want to mount the bed rails. You should have two points of attachment running perpendicular to the ground (along the headboard rails) and at least four running parallel to the ground (along the mattress support). If your rails are long enough to reach the foot board rails, attach them using two more points running perpendicular to the ground.

4. Put on your safety goggles. Drilling metal often throws sparks. Clear the area of anything that sparking might scar or burn.

5. Drill pilot holes through the bed rails using a drill bit the same diameter as your bolts. For thicker bolts, start the hole with a narrower bit, then widen the hole with progressively wider bits.

6. Hold the bed rails in place. Push the felt marker through each bolt hole, marking the bed frame for later drilling.

7. Drill pilot holes in the bed frame at the marked points, using the same method as you did for the bed rails.

8. Bolt the bed rail in place using one washer on each side of the frame. Have the nuts point inward towards the bed.

9. Put the mattress back in place.

Put A Wroughtiron Railing Into Concrete Steps

You can purchase wrought iron railing in many different styles.

A wrought-iron railing will change the look of your concrete stairs and make your stairs safer to walk on. Wet concrete stairs are slippery, so having a railing could prevent a fall. The railing should be between 30 to 42 inches high, which is within arm's length for the average person. The top of the railing also needs to be easy to grip to effectively prevent falls. Check local codes for other requirements before installing a wrought-iron railing to your concrete steps. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure your steps with a tape measure to mark the locations of each rail baluster. Refer to the instructions in your wrought-iron railing kit for the measurement between each baluster.

2. Attach the railing brackets to the steps by setting the brackets in the locations where the balusters will be. Mark the locations of the screw holes. Drill holes down through the screw holes with a masonry bit and drill.

3. Set the brackets in place and attach them to the concrete with bracket lead masonry anchors and screws.

4. Set the bottoms of the wrought iron balusters into the brackets. Thread set screws through the bracket and through the balusters and tighten them with a wrench or screwdriver.

5. Assemble the top, bottom and intermediate rails by following the wrought-iron railing kit's manufacturer's instructions because each style of railing is different.

Build A Table From Marble Slabs

Marble is a natural stone with a beautifully veined surface.

Adding a custom-built marble table is an easy way to bring sophistication to your home's decor. After a trip to the furniture store, however, sticker shock may discourage your decorator instincts. Building your own table from a marble slab is a frugal method of satisfying your checkbook as well as your personal aesthetic. With a sturdy base and a marble slab, your marble table can be quickly built in one weekend. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the space for the table. The space available and the type of table desired will determine the size of the slab. For example, a bar or bistro table is usually square, measuring between 24 and 42 inches. A dining room table is usually 36 to 42 inches wide and 36 to 80 inches long.

2. Consult your local stone yard or countertop fabricator. Remnants of marble slabs are sometimes available for up to half off the retail price. The colors and sizes are usually limited; however, the cost savings make up for the sparse selection.

3. Select a metal base for your table. Metal table bases and do-it-yourself kits are available through local retailers, mail-order catalogs and in second-hand stores. A base should cover at least three quarters of the bottom of the slab to avoid accidental tipping.

4. Place the marble slab upside down on a flat surface. Center the metal base on the slab. Mark the holes for bolts on the bottom of the slab. Remove the base.

5. Drill the bolt holes in the slab using a diamond drill bit. Work slowly; drilling into stone requires a light hand and patience. Do not press the drill down, allow the bit to cut into the stone.

6. Mix an epoxy suitable for stone and metal. Apply it to the inside of the bolt hole. Then press a nut into the hole. Allow it to dry completely according to the manufacturer's directions.

7. Place the base in the room where you want the table to be located. With a helper, align the marble slab over the base. While your helper holds the slab in place, secure the base using bolts. Do not overtighten, as you don't want to pull the nuts loose from the slab.

8. Seal the marble top with a sealer suitable for marble. Avoid spilling any acidic foods or substances on the marble, as they may damage the finish and stain the marble.

Weld A Screen To A Metal Gate

Fencing screen is often heavy duty.

Welding is a process of joining two metal objects together using heat and sometimes a third filler metal to flow between and join your objects. If you have a metal gate, welding is one way to attach metal screen or fencing material to the gate. It's important to wear protective gear like long pants and a long sleeved shirt and to have a welders helmet to protect your eyes. You will also need gloves and to tie your hair back. If you are welding outdoors on a standing gate, you should have a fire extinguisher close in case you set the nearby grass on fire. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Place the fencing screen on the gate and clamp it to the metal frame of the gate. Cut the fencing to the size and shape you need with tin snips and wire cutters. Adjust the clamps to hold the screen securely to the gate. Mark the location of your welds on the gate.

2. Clean the gate and the fencing where it will be welded using metal files and metal sandpaper. Paint the location with flux using the brush tool in the flux can.

3. Light your torch set with your helmet on and down, and adjust the mixture to produce the size and heat of flame that you need. Often the gate and the screen will be of lower quality metals which will make them vulnerable to holes from too high of heat.

4. Apply the torch to both the fence and metal screening to heat both equally and fast. Use metal filler or solder where the metals touch to create a secure weld. Move the torch away from the metal once the weld flows. Keep in mind that many pipe-style gates will not vent the heat well and they will remain hot. Move to the other side of the gate to allow your first side to cool. Weld near the top first and then remove your clamps. You can position your clamps closer to a weld if the fencing doesn't touch the gate on its own.

Support A Chandelier

Use a fan brace to support a heavy chandelier.

Since most chandeliers are on the heavy side, they often need more than just the strength of its decorative chain and the ceiling to support it; even the electrical box won't support your chandelier if it weighs more than 50 pounds. Falling chandeliers not only present a clear hazard to you, your family and your guests, but also end up broken into pieces, a distressing state of affairs for such an expensive lighting element. Protect your ceiling, your chandelier and, most importantly, yourself and your guests by properly supporting your heavy chandelier. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove the electrical box from the hole in the ceiling from which you'll hang the chandelier. Pry the electrical box from the hole with a flat bar, if it's nailed in place; otherwise, unscrew its screws with your screwdriver.

2. Turn the fan brace's hexagon-shaped bar to shorten it; keep turning it until it's reached the shortest length possible. Insert it into the ceiling hole one side at a time. Rest the fan brace's feet on the unseen side of the ceiling and center it over the hole.

3. Turn the brace again. This time, it'll expand until it digs its prongs into the joists on either side of it. Once you can no longer turn the brace by hand, use an adjustable wrench.

4. Install the electrical box that was included with the fan brace according to the manufacturer's instructions to complete your chandelier installation.

Purchase Outdoor Patio Furniture

It's that time of year again. Time to sit out on your patio in the evenings with a glass of ice tea, to eat al fresco and to entertain around the barbeque. If your patio furniture is looking faded and getting creaky, perhaps it's time to shop for new patio furniture. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Purchase Outdoor Patio Furniture

1. Assess the space you have on your back deck or patio. You don't want to have a clutter of furniture out there and it's easy to get carried away with matching bakers racks, side tables, rolling bars and serving tables. If you want the flexibility of enough furniture to seat a lot of guests, consider some folding chairs that can be brought out when needed.

2. Think about how you use the space. If you spend a lot of evenings entertaining and cooking out for family and friends, you'll need a variety of comfortable seating and tables. If you mainly use the patio for sunning yourself or sitting outside for quiet time, focus more on comfortable lounge chairs or gliders. Poolside furniture needs to be comfortable, light colored and especially durable.

3. Match the style of the furniture to your home's architectural style. Victorian style homes lend themselves to wicker or fanciful wrought iron, while a 1950's rambler will be nicely accented by more retro styled patio furniture. Browse catalogs and online stores and check the selection at furniture and home and garden stores. Don't forgo comfort for the sake of ultra-cool looking furniture but you have a lot of choices beyond molded plastic and aluminum tubing.

4. Choose a variety of seating options if you plan on entertaining. Double love seats or gliders for romantic couples, lounges and wide comfortable chairs for people who enjoy lying back and spreading out, straight backed comfy chairs for eating and pulling up to a table. Plan on having at least a couple of side tables for entertaining. And don't forget little chairs for the children!

5. Consider extras like bakers racks for displaying plants or setting out drinks, rolling carts for food service and storage chests that double as seating.

6. Buy an umbrella for shade if that is an option for your favorite table style. Most circular tables come with umbrellas in a wide range of fabrics, which can be particularly useful on bright sunny days.

Canopy Bed Ideas For Small Bedrooms

When properly scaled, canopy beds are ideal for a small room.

Decorating a small bedroom is among the most difficult tasks in interior design. The small square footage has a tendency to feel cramped and cave-like when furniture or color selection isn't right. A canopy over a bed adds a bit of drama and romance to a room, but might feel overwhelming in a small space. To prevent this problem, most styles need to be scaled down to fit the size of the space. Does this Spark an idea?

Materials

The choice of building material will either work with or against a small space. Certain materials that have a large appearance will make a small space seem even smaller. Wood is one material that creates a minimizing effect. Metal style canopies are preferred for small spaces. Select a decorative wrought iron for a whimsical or rustic room, and stainless steel or chrome for a sleek, modern space.

Incorporating Fabric

Use the same fabric for the canopy throughout the room for a cohesive look. This makes the canopy an essential part of the room and not just an extra accent. Drape the fabric over bed side tables and make lamp shades or drapes out of the same material. The canopy adds that touch of relaxation to the bed, while the other pieces pull the room together and increase visual interest.

Fabric Options

Keep canopy fabrics light and sheer. White, cream and beige tones work the best in a small space and prevent the room from appearing too small. A modern alternative is to select a canopy made from wrought iron that has enough visual interest so that using fabric is unnecessary. This approach creates the appearance of a small canopy and keeps the design simple and in proportion to the small space. Add a mirror over the headboard to reflect light and create the illusion of a larger area.

Proportion

Proportion is the key for any room big or small. Select furniture pieces that are an appropriate size for the space in both height and width. A canopy is no different from the bed itself, and will look right at home in a small space provided it is a small scale design. If a traditional canopy is too tall or wide for the room, find an alternative style that is more appropriate. A bed crown or hanging canopy is mounted to the ceiling or the wall. This canopy works on a smaller scale and is appropriate for a small room. It can be adjusted and moved to other parts to fully accommodate the space.

Protect Wrought Iron

Wrought iron's beauty and durability continue to make it a favorite among homeowners.

Wrought iron has been used for centuries for fencing, gates and outdoor furniture because of its durability and fireproof nature. It is also a great outdoor choice because it is impervious to insects, strong and resistant to rot. The only thing that iron can not stand up against is rust. Simple semi-annual maintenance will keep your wrought iron from suffering the ravages of rust, but it should be re-coated every five years. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

General Maintenance

1. Periodically wash the wrought iron with warm, soapy water. Rinse with hose water.

2. Scrape off any signs of rust with a steel-bristled brush or sandpaper. Wipe clean.

3. Prime and paint any nicks or dings with a thin coat of oil-based metal paint. Dry thoroughly between coats.

4. Protect the finish with automotive wax on non-textured wrought iron. On textured iron, use mineral oil or baby oil to protect.

Five-Year Recoating

5. Scrub the wrought iron with a steel-bristled brush to loosen any paint and rust.

6. File down any rough edges with either 80-grit sandpaper or a metal file.

7. Spray all metal surfaces with a coat of phosphoric acid to neutralize. This will convert any specks of rust remaining to a crust, and will prohibit its spread.

8. Brush away any loose paint or flakes. Apply a heavy coat of primer with a bristle brush.

9. Paint with an oil-based metal paint, using a chip brush to apply paint from the top of the piece down.

Landscaping Ideas For A Rectangular Yard

Many houses have rectangular yards.

Many homes have a limited amount yard space, and the area they do have is rectangular in shape. If you have a rectangular yard, there are various landscaping ideas that you may incorporate to break up the angular lines. A rectangular shape gives you an easy canvas to work off of in terms of design. No matter what shape your yard is, incorporating plants and design elements will enhance the overall look of the yard. Does this Spark an idea?

Flower Beds

No matter where you place a flower bed, the design breaks up the monotony of a grassy, rectangular yard. If you want to add some color to the landscaping, place a flower bed up against the edge of the property, running from the curb to a gate or house feature. Remove the grass and add shrubbery or flowers to the bed; then cover with shredded bark or mulch. You may also run a flower bed along the perimeter of the front or back yard, placing it along the curb and/or sides of the property line. Once the shrubbery grows, you will also have additional privacy. Choose the shrubbery and flowers based on your location, since your growing conditions will vary based on climate or amount of sunlight.

Seating Area

For a rectangular yard, one of the corners away from the house is an ideal space to use for a social seating area. Clear the space of grass or rocks, and flatten the area using a soil compacter. Place flagstones in a shape that will accommodate a patio set or benches. Pour sand between the flagstones to keep them firmly in place, and hose away excess sand. Once the sand has dried, put a patio set on the new flagstone patio and use for social nights during the summer. You may also add a copper-bowled fire pit around the patio to keep warm during the evenings and place tiki lights around the patio area for lighting.

Garden Retreat

Whether you want a garden with edible vegetables or herbs or simply an area to get away and relax in, a small garden retreat is easy to create in a rectangular yard. Decide where you want to place the garden and then clear the area. Plant fruits, vegetables or herbs in a portion of the garden. You may also create a flower garden with aromatic plants such as roses, lavender or jasmine. Add a wrought iron or wooden bench to the opposite area for relaxing, and add a decorative touch such as a birdbath or a flea market find like a vintage wheelbarrow.

What A Typical Bedroom Set Includes

Bedroom sets typically contain a bed, dresser and two night stands.

Bedroom sets make it easy to decorate a bedroom without worrying about matching the style, color and size of assorted pieces. This foundation makes it easy to create a cohesive, tranquil theme for relaxing, reading and sleeping. Bedroom sets usually range from three to eight pieces and can be found for almost any budget and style. Does this Spark an idea?

Bedroom Set Items

Typically, bedroom sets contain a bed, dresser and one or two night stands. Different sets cater to different needs and available space. Often, sets will contain an armoire, storage bench or even full length mirror. Choosing a fuller set can make decorating simple and create a beautiful room effortlessly. On the other hand, if you enjoy personalizing your house spaces, a sparser room set could create a nice foundation to display eclectic or antique treasures.

Choosing a Set

Bedroom sets should be chosen based on suitability and design needs. An armoire may be a valuable option for someone with a lot of clothing, or it may be unnecessary if the bedroom has plenty of closet space already. Different features suit personal habits and lifestyles. For those who like to read in bed, a headboard with a bookshelf may be a nice feature. For families with children, rounded edges on furniture are a smart safety measure. In small rooms, sets that provide extra storage space are helpful.

Styles

Bedroom sets can be found in almost any style imaginable. Sleigh beds or four-post beds, with graceful curves are common in traditional-looking sets, with deep wood stain and subtle carvings. Modern styles feature clean, straight lines and one or two basic colors. Brass or wrought-iron bed frames and night stands could be the foundation for a classic set, which may be paired with pieces found at antique stores or passed down through the family.

Bedroom Decor

To create a calm, peaceful atmosphere in the bedroom, it is important that the set incorporates seamlessly into the rest of the design. Keep in mind components of the room that won't be changing, such as carpet or wall color, when choosing a set. By keeping the bed set and other room characteristics simple, the feel of the room can be changed easily with different curtains, bedspread and pillows.

Vintage Landscaping Ideas

Vintage landscaping uses a combination of heirloom plants and antique gardening decor to create an atmosphere of days gone by. Does this Spark an idea?

Design Ideas

Vintage gardens were often monochromatic, using flowers of one color. Areas were referred to as the "blue border" or the "white garden." Pools and rock gardens were also integral parts of vintage gardens.

Annuals For Vintage Gardens

Some annuals for a vintage garden are ageratums, carnations, celosias, cleomes, cosmos, flowering tobacco, globe amaranth, impatiens, moss roses, nasturtiums, pansies, snapdragons, stocks, verbenas and violets.

Perennials For Vintage Gardens

Perennials for a vintage garden include bee balms, bleeding hearts, cannas, chrysanthemums, cimicifugas, columbines, coneflowers, coreopsis, delphiniums, dianthus, foxgloves, geraniums, hellebores, lobelias, peonies, rudbeckias, salvias and yarrows.

Shrubs For Vintage Gardens

Shrubs for vintage gardens are abelias, barberries, bottlebrush buckeyes, boxwood, butterfly bushes, Carolina allspice, daphnes, deutzias, forsythias, Japanese quince, lilacs, mock oranges, summersweet and weigelias.

Special Areas

Flower plants create an inviting area around a pool in a vintage garden. Examples are astilbes, balloon flowers, gaillardias, irises, poppies, shasta daisies and stoke's asters. Shrubs and perennials add textural interest to vintage-style rock gardens. Try shrubs such as azaleas, daphnes, heathers, junipers, pines and yuccas; and perennials such as alyssums, candytufts, phloxes, plumbagos, sedums and veronicas.

Vintage Garden Decor

Wrought-iron benches, arches and trellises are typical vintage garden décor. Vintage accessories such as wicker baskets and verdigris lanterns add charming touches. Statues such as cherubs or lions as well as celestial-themed sundials and wall plaques are also vintage accessories.

Protect Cast Iron Planters

Protect Cast Iron Planters

Cast iron planters take us back to Victorian times. Many cast iron planters in use today are from that era, while many newly manufactured planters look as beautiful as the antique originals. Whether you own a vintage or new one, cast iron planters are expensive. To keep your investment from rusting away, you'll want to protect it. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Wash the surface of the cast iron planter inside and out with mild, soapy water. Dry thoroughly. Use a zinc-rich (90% zinc or more) undercoat paint.

2. Paint on a rust-resistant exterior paint with an epoxy-resin base. Let dry and apply a second coat.

3. Apply a clear sealer formulated for exterior use if you want to keep the natural look of the cast iron. Coat every bit of the cast iron planter both inside and out. Make sure the sealer protects against UV rays.

4. Fill areas where water can pool with epoxy resin after painting or sealing the planter. This keeps standing water from wearing down the paint or clear sealant, which can cause rust.

5. Bring cast iron planters in for winter. If they must be left outside, then cover with plastic.

Paint Metal Furniture

Repainting metal furniture is a good way to restore it without having to replace it, which can be expensive. Repainting metal furniture sounds simple enough but it actually takes more time than one would think. It's not as easy as spray painting a piece and letting it dry. There are a few different things to take into consideration when painting or repainting furniture. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. If you already have paint on the furniture, then you will want to remove it before you paint over it. This can be accomplished with a paint stripper. There are a couple of different varieties to choose from. One comes in a spray paint can, while the other comes in a regular paint can, which requires the use of a paint brush. If you choose the spray can variety, simply spray the furniture with the stripper and use the wiping cloth to wipe the stripper and paint off. If you are using the other type, dip the brush in the stripper, shake off the excess and brush the stripper onto the metal furniture in long, even strokes. Then you can use the wiping cloth to wipe off the paint and stripper.

2. Once the paint is stripped off of the furniture, you must make sure to remove any rust that may be on it. Use the sand paper or the electric sander to remove any visible rust. This step is paramount because if there is any remaining rust on the furniture before you paint it, then it will show through the new paint job in time and you'll have to repeat the process.

3. Once you have removed the rust from the furniture, you will need to apply the primer or rust sealer to it before you begin painting. This usually comes in a spray paint type of can, so make sure you are painting in an area that is open and also make sure that you are not going to damage the floor while painting. Spray the primer or sealer evenly over the entire surface of the furniture using even strokes. Allow the primer to dry.

4. After the primer has dried, you are ready to paint the furniture. If you are using a spray paint can, spray the furniture evenly with the paint. Don't apply too much at one time because the paint will drip, and paint drips are hard to repair. If you are using a paint can, dip the brush in the paint, shake the excess off and apply paint to small areas at a time in short, even strokes. After you have finished painting, allow the paint to dry.

5. When the paint is completely dry, you can apply a clear coat to the furniture, if you wish. This will lock in the paint and primer or sealer and will give the furniture a glossy finish. If you prefer a flat finish, skip the clear coat. If you have used rust-resistant paint and removed all of the rust prior to painting, your metal furniture should retain its paint job.

The Best Kind Of Metal To Put On The Outside Of A Garage

Select galvanized steel for durability.

If you're looking to increase your home's curb appeal, garage door hardware is the perfect place to start. Hardware is a functional and decorative accessory that makes the outside of a garage more eye-appealing. Depending on your hardware preferences and durability factors, some metal options are best-suited for the exterior of a garage door. Does this Spark an idea?

Durability

Choose galvanized or stainless steel hardware if your top priority is durability. Steel is a strong material that does not bend or break easily and holds up well over time. Galvanized and stainless steel garage door hardware can withstand tension, so the up-and-down motion from garage door use does not compromise the integrity of the material. The drawback to putting steel on the outside of a garage is its susceptibility to rust due to moisture and bad weather conditions. According to the Public Broadcasting Station, steel can also weaken when exposed to high temperatures.

Weight

Opt for aluminum garage door hardware if you want a lightweight metal. According to Artistic Garage Doors, cast aluminum is rustproof and does not corrode when exposed to outdoor elements. Aluminum is a good choice if you have a fiberglass or thin wooden garage door that cannot support heavy hardware. The brushed-metallic silvery sheen in aluminum is especially eye-appealing on garage doors in a cottage or Victorian style. Avoid aluminum hardware if your garage is near a basketball goal or other recreational equipment where balls could dent or damage the surface of the hardware.

Ornamentation

Select powder-coated wrought iron garage door hardware if you want decorative ornamental hardware that is available in a wide variety of design options. Wrought iron hardware has a classic dark, foreboding motif that complements Tudor styles, medieval themes and carriage door designs. Powder-coated wrought iron is rust-free and has a soft black metallic color that looks weathered. Access Custom Garage Doors reports that powder-coated wrought iron hardware complements wooden garage doors. Powder-coated wrought iron can get brittle and fade with long-term sun exposure.

Traditional Design

Install brass hardware on the outside of your garage if you prefer the intense high-gloss shine of a bright yellow metal. Brass hardware has an authentic appeal that accommodates traditional colonial motifs. Oxidation causes brass to lose its luster and eventually corrode from rust, so you must polish it frequently. According to Greenwich Metal Finishing, it is difficult for a homeowner to successfully restore brass exterior hardware to its original finish once it has tarnished. Opt for brass-plated hardware, usually applied over steel, if you don't want to polish your hardware.

Handmade Country Dining Tables

A handmade dining table brings out the country charm of a vacation home.

You don't need to live in the country to enjoy an air of country living in your dining room. Hunt for, or make, a rural-style dining table to star at formal and informal meals. A country table, handmade, has character and enough interesting quirkiness to function as found art, even when it is supporting the holiday roast or the breakfast eggs from the backyard chickens. Does this Spark an idea?

Weathered Wood

Old wood gets new life when it is sanded and spliced into a dining table. A simple table has a top of silvered wood smoothed by time -- or a little judicious sandpaper -- and joined into a rectangle set on a reclaimed metal base. The base can be as uncomplicated as wrought iron or recycled turned table legs. Or add a contemporary touch with a base of metal angles bolted to the bottom of the reclaimed wood surface.

Mosaic Tiles

A plain picnic table gets a fancier demeanor with a surface of handpainted ceramic tiles. The table may be overlaid with glued-on tiles or feature a center panel of tiles set into the surface. The frame around the tabletop and the mismatched or repurposed wood chairs surrounding the table may be pulled together with the same glossy enamel paint for ease of cleaning. A country-style table like this works equally well in a casual home dining room, an eat-in kitchen or a covered arbor on a patio or terrace.

Repurposed and Painted

No need to treat an old farm table as something precious. It's destined for lively meals and rambunctious children and a whole new life in an urban loft or a country home. So whitewash and paint away its imperfections to give it a new lease on life. A scruffy handmade table becomes the star of the screened porch or the downtown open space home with a coat of paint and a complement of mismatched painted chairs with bright cushions. Set it with a random collection of plates scavenged from country flea markets and serve some homemade, hearty country fare.

Waste Not

When you renovate your country home, save the old wood and put it to good use. Keep salvageable boards out of the woodpile, and match them to each other instead for a new dining table. Worn boards may be smoothed by time and touch to a natural shiny patina, but you can give them a coat of wax or polyurethane if they don't have an innate glow. Set the joined boards on a painted wood frame supported by plain wood table legs, and paint the entire underside support structure in a color to match your decor. That way you save the pretty wood for the visible tabletop and still conserve money and the environment by using leftovers to complete the dining set.

Mediterranean Style Interior Decorating Ideas

Mediterranean style interior decoration is about openness, brightness and flow. Therefore, before embarking on decorating in this style, it is essential that you find ways to eliminate, store and disguise clutter. This decor works best as an overall look, rather than just having Mediterranean accents. Does this Spark an idea?

Styles

Two prominent styles are found in Mediterranean decor. There is Greek Mediterranean style, which features prominent textures, tile work, sculpted stucco and bold lines. Italian Mediterranean style is earthier, with red roof tiles, terracotta or wood floors, pottery, leather furniture and iron wall art.

Palette

Greek Mediterranean decor tends toward cool and light natural shades. White textiles with embroidered details accent golden yellow walls and ocean blue tiles or accessories. An entire wall may be devoted to a brightly-colored painting, or a section of a garden wall to a tile mural spotlighting natural beauty. Italian Mediterranean decor favors natural or warm-stained wood furniture and exposed beams against distressed antiqued walls or white with touches of ocean green or sky blue. Accent walls or accessories may feature splashes of yellow, poppy red, olive green or cobalt.

Furnishings and Accessories

Big and bold defines Mediterranean furniture, and all those drawers and cabinets are ideal for hiding stacks of paper and other clutter. Instead. place blue glass vases or terracotta pottery on surfaces. Lighting fixtures should be prominent, such as wrought iron chandeliers. Popular shapes include arches and columns. Mediterranean style should also integrate the natural world with your interior. Windows should be big and curtains translucent, to let light shine in. Plants, bowls of fruit and big displays of flowers add to the theme. You should have views of the garden from the house. Gardens often contain seating for gatherings, which can be as simple as a mosaic tile-topped table and wrought iron chairs or as major as a long wooden table and benches for seating.
