Stainless steel tableware is a popular choice for everyday use, as well as special occasions. Its popularity is due, in part, to its durability, appearance and easy care requirements. The appearance and durability of stainless steel tableware largely depends on the amount of nickel content present. Nickel is what helps prevent stainless steel from pitting and staining. Leaving acidic foods on the utensils however, or subjecting them to improper or washing drying methods, can cause even the highest quality stainless steel to develop dark spots. Fortunately, with a few supplies and a bit of effort, dark spots can be removed. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
Using Baking Soda Paste to Remove Dark Spots
1. Place 1 tbsp. of baking soda into a small container. Gradually add water to the baking soda, stirring with a spoon, to make a mixture of paste-like consistency.
2. Apply a small amount of the paste to a soft cloth or a sponge.
3. Rub the paste into the dark spots with the soft cloth or sponge.
4. Rinse the tableware thoroughly and repeat, if needed.
5. Dry the tableware thoroughly with a clean, dry cloth.
Using Stainless Steel Polish to Remove Dark Spots
6. Purchase a high quality, mild stainless steel polish. Ensure that the polish is safe to use on items that have contact with food.
7. Apply the polish to the spots on the tableware with a polishing cloth. Follow the product directions for application.
8. Hand wash the tableware with mild soap and water once you remove the spots.
9. Dry the utensils thoroughly with a clean, dry towel.
Candles add to the atmosphere but can leave a mess.
Candles add light and ambiance to any room but the mess they leave behind can be hard to clean up. It's possible to remove spilled or hardened candle wax off metal without damaging the surface. By following a few simple steps using supplies found in most homes, you'll be able to clean your metal surface, leaving no trace of candle wax behind. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
Clean Candle Wax Off A Metal Surface
1. Use the heat from a hair dryer to melt the wax.
Set your hair dryer on low-medium heat and aim at the hardened candle wax. Continue until the wax has liquefied. Avoid using the high setting so the liquefied wax doesn't splatter from the force of the air. It's best to liquefy the wax with your hair dryer so you can wipe it away rather than trying to scrape hardened wax off. Scraping often results in scratching or damaging the surface.
2. Wipe up wax with a towel.
Wipe the liquefied wax with a clean towel. Fold the towel over to a clean area frequently or use another towel. Continue to wipe up the liquefied wax from the metal until all that's left is a waxy shine but no wax. Use a towel that can be discarded afterward since the wax will not wash out.
3. Buff the surface with a used dryer sheet.
Buff the area with a dryer sheet you've already used in the dryer. Rub the metal in a circular motion until the waxy shine is gone and all that remains is the normal shine of the metal surface.
Although the purpose of shelves is mainly functional, a stylish shelf can accent a room's existing tone or bring a whole new flavor to the space. As shelves serve in almost every room of the house---holding everything from towels to books to spices---their aesthetic impact on the home shouldn't be underestimated. When brewing ideas for shelves, remember to picture the shelf in the room and consider how it will blend---or clash---with its surroundings. Does this Spark an idea?
Bookshelves
Your bookshelves should accent the surrounding furniture.
Bookshelves are the most common type of shelves for home decorating. These shelves---which generally stand at hip level and sometimes reach as far as the ceiling---don't always hold books and come in a variety of styles. For a unified, stylish home decor, match your bookshelves with the style of the rest of your furniture. Go with Art Deco, modern or mid-century-style shelves when accenting furniture defined by bold geometric shapes. Lacquered woods, innovative forms, tubular steel and minimalistic shapes define these types of shelves. Spaces with a more classical or elegant style may fit into Victorian, Art Nouveau or Renaissance categories. For these spaces, try shelves of dark wood or wrought iron---some with glass components---or shelves with detailed designs, such as floral or ivy accents. Boxy bookshelves made of thick wood---sometime unfinished---go well with Arts and Crafts and Mission styles, which are defined by large, squat and rustic furniture in simple rectangular forms. Conversely, mixing and matching styles can create a "shabby chic" sort of decor---just make sure each piece has its own history and character.
Decorative Shelves
Floating wall shelves provide a home for knickknacks and other items.
Corner shelving units---which feature triangular ends made for fitting into the intersection of two walls---save space and brighten up difficult-to-decorate corner spaces. Floating wall shelves mount directly to the wall. These types of shelves are simple and minimalist, adding basic, bold lines to contemporary home styles and holding items such as books, knickknacks and entertainment media. For an uncommon conversation piece, try an over-the-top window shelf. Similar to floating shelves, these shelves mount over windows and doors and go well with country-style decor. As they rest high, they're best for holding decorative items. Similarly, wall-mounted knickknack shelves and step shelves are purely decorative units that add a bit of character and charm to a space when filled with personal artifacts.
Repurposed Shelves
Emptied crates serve as rustic shelf stand-ins.
Repurposed and recycled shelves add environmentally friendly character to almost any space. To create repurposed book shelves, try turning over and stacking wooden or plastic crates such as wine crates, milk crates or egg crates. Old ladders leaned against the wall or built-in loft rafters also serve as creative bookshelf alternatives. Slatted shutters mounted on the wall add an artistic touch to kitchens and offices, and can be used as shelves to contain papers, letters and envelopes, while old wine racks might serve as linen shelves. These types of shelves create an eclectic and hodgepodge atmosphere while serving as conversation starters. They tend to work well in dorms, lofts and studio spaces.
Limit the size of a wrought-iron gate on a wood post.
In a plan to beautify your property, hard work can pay off in one season in the garden or by painting clapboards or trim. Some projects, such as a wrought-iron fence, may take longer. If you have a wood fence, start by replacing the gate; bolt gates that come with posts attached directly onto fence posts on either side. If your gate comes with only a box of hardware, however, you'll have to hang the gate on wood posts until the budget allows the purchase of more fencing. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
Posts
1. Dig two post holes down to the frost line in your area, and put 3 inches of gravel in the bottom of each. Position posts the width of the gate plus the width of a hinge, plus the size of the catch or clamp used to secure the gate.
2. Mix a sack of quick-setting concrete in your wheelbarrow and fill the holes about two-thirds of the way.
3. Set the posts into the holes and work them into the cement until each one stands straight up with a flat side facing in toward the gate. Brace the posts with bricks or cement blocks to keep them upright, and allow the cement to dry overnight.
4. Add fresh cement to the post holes with fresh cement in the morning, if needed, to fill or compensate for shrinkage during the drying process.
Hang the Gate
5. Line up the top hinge on a plumb line.
Snap a plumb line down the center on the inside of one post. You'll mount your gate hinges on this line.
6. Attach the hinges to the gate. They might attach with bolts or clamps. Because gates vary in size and hinges vary in design, follow directions for specific procedures.
7. Raise the gate upright, with the hinge anchor plates against the post with the center line. Slide some bricks or pavers under the gate to help support it at the height you want to mount it; most garden or entry gates swing 3 or 4 inches off the ground.
8. Hold the anchor plate against the post on the center line and mark the holes. Pre-drill pilot holes before attaching the plate with screws, as pressurized wood is hard. Check to see that the gate is hanging straight after putting in one screw.
9. Remove the supporting bricks and attach the bottom hinge, pre-drilling pilot holes before attaching screws.
Finish the Gate
10. Attach the gate latch. Again, consult the directions. Your latch might screw into the gate or clamp around it with bolts.
11. Swing the gate against the post with the latch engaged, to find the proper location for the catch -- then, attach the latch to the post.
12. Cut the posts on the end of the post to match the gate. Top the posts with caps, if desired, to protect the grain against moisture.

The Rust-Oleum Tub & Tile Refinishing Kit restores ceramic, fiberglass and porcelain showers and tubs. Once the solution dries, it creates a hard protective surface. Recoating your tub or shower with the Rust-Oleum Tub & Tile Refinishing kit is a low-cost way to turn dingy, scratched showers and tubs into an attractive part of the bathroom decor. You'll need a second shower or tub, since the formula must cure for three days. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Insert a drain removal tool into the metal drain and turn it counterclockwise to remove it from the tub. Tape up all other metal surfaces well with painter's tape to protect them.
2. Examine the tub or shower to identify any chipped or peeling areas. Sand these down with a fine grit sandpaper until they are perfectly smooth. Fill chips and gouges with a porcelain or fiberglass repair compound using a putty knife. Allow the compound to dry and then resand.
3. Clean the entire area with an abrasive scrubbing cleaner and a sponge. If mildew is present, mix 1 gallon of water and 1 cup of bleach and apply it to the affected areas. Rinse the area with clean water.
4. Insert a utility knife along any areas of caulk and cut through them. Grasp the loose pieces with your finger and pull them off. Scape off any excess caulk with a putty knife and wipe away the remnants with a rag.
5. Wipe the entire area with an abrasive sponge and a cleaner designed to remove lime. Rinse well and dry with a towel.
6. Sand the surface lightly with 400-grit or 600-grit sandpaper just until the surface is dull. Wipe all surfaces with a tack cloth to remove the resulting dust.
7. Turn on all fans and open windows to provide proper ventilation. Mix the two cans of Rust-Oleum Tub & Tile Refinisher in a small bucket and pour it into a paint tray. Apply the mixture to all surfaces in smooth, long stokes using a paint roller.
8. Wait one hour and apply a second coat of the paint to all surfaces.

The transition from sleeping in a crib to a toddler bed is new and exciting for a child, and at the same time can be confusing and distressing. Typically when your child reaches 18 months to 2 years old, you might want to consider the move to a "big-kid bed." To help ease this transition, make the new toddler bed a special, personalized place for the child. Little girls who love princesses may enjoy a princess toddler bed. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Consult your little princess. Ask your little girl her favorite colors, favorite princesses or anything else she would love on her new toddler bed. Involving your toddler in the decision-making for the new bed ensures the bed will be accepted and appreciated.
2. Select a bed frame. Many furniture stores offer a wide variety of toddler bed frames to choose from. Try any of these classic bed frame styles for a beautiful princess bed: a simple white wood frame with a pretty headboard; a wrought iron frame with swirly designs; a canopy bed frame; a four-poster frame; or a typical girl's headboard covered in pink fabric.
3. Select a color. Pink is the obvious choice for a princess toddler bed. However, you can also opt for a silver, white or yellow frame, with pink bedding. Or select a pink frame with white or another color bedding--purple or a pretty pale green or baby blue. You can choose sparkly paint to give the bed frame a special touch.
4. Select bedding. Bedding for your little one should be soft and comfortable. Try flannel or cotton sheets with a higher thread count. You can even find bedding sets with a pattern of your toddler's favorite princess from TV or the movies. Sets will generally include matching sheets, a pillow case and a bed skirt. Find a warm matching comforter in a pink with ruffles or perhaps white with pink bows. Match the color of the comforter with the sheets and the bed frame color.
5. Add finishing touches. To give the toddler princess bed even more of an elegant look, add some finishing touches, such as small bed pillows, cute princess dolls, princess stickers to put on the bed frame, jewels to hot glue onto the frame, or find princess stencils at your local craft store to paint a pretty design onto the frame.

Marble-topped dining tables give an eat-in kitchen a rich quality and when the decor of the kitchen complements the table, the entire space looks elegant and appealing. Marble comes in a variety of colors, so you can easily decorate your kitchen using the color inspiration from the dining set. Whether you want to transform your kitchen into a rustic country kitchen or French bistro, your marble dining table will fit in. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Paint the kitchen in a color that reflects the style you want in the space and complements the color of the marble. For example, if you are creating a French bistro look in the kitchen, use a neutral palette of whites or creams to create an airy, clean decor style. In a rustic kitchen with medium to dark-colored marble, choose a paint palette that features grays, browns or yellows.
2. Pair the table with chairs that are reminiscent of the style you want in the kitchen. For example, in a French-style kitchen, look for wrought-iron chairs. Marble in a country kitchen can be paired with rustic-looking benches or wooden chairs for a shabby chic appearance.
3. Place an accessory from the kitchen to the center of the table to tie the room together. Place a fruit-filled basket onto the table to add color, or use faux or fresh flowers. For example, in a French-inspired kitchen, bundles of lavender in a glass vase on the marble table create a beautiful centerpiece. In a country kitchen, add a cake stand in the center of the table to fill with baked goods.

Wine racks provide an attractive and compact way to store multiple bottles of wine. Wine racks are available in several varieties, including racks that sit on a counter and racks that hang on a wall or under a cabinet. In addition, wine racks are manufactured in numerous finishes such as wood, plastic and iron to complement home decor. The most important aspect of hanging a wrought iron wine rack is securing it to the wall so that it can support the weight of the wine bottles it will eventually hold. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Place a stud finder flat against a wall and turn it on by pushing the power button. Slide the stud finder against the wall until the device emits a beep. Mark the location on the wall with a pencil. Continue sliding the stud finder along the wall until another stud is located. Mark this location with a pencil as well. Ideally, each screw of the wine rack will be inserted into a wall stud.
2. Hold the wine rack against the wall so that the wine rack screw holes are aligned with the pencil marks indicating the wall studs.
3. Insert a 3/4 inch screw, usually provided with the wine rack, into one of the screw holes and screw it into the wall using a screwdriver.
4. Insert the remaining screws into the wine rack screw holes and screw them into the wall with the screwdriver.
5. Place your hands on each side of the wine rack and try to shake it gently. The wine rack should not move at all. If the rack shakes or rattles even slightly, tighten each screw until the rack is secure.

Umbra Loft drapery rods are made of different metals such as wrought iron, aluminum or brass. They typically have large ball ends that give the rod a classic feel. Although the brackets used to hang your particular Umbra Loft drapery rod might differ from the next, you will discover that the process of installing the rod will be the same, no matter what type of rod you have. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Tape a piece of paper in the upper left corner directly above the left side and right side of the window. If your rod requires a center support bracket, tape a piece of paper above the head rail in the center of the window. Using the paper will keep you from marking up the wall.
2. Measure down from the ceiling, and select a spot on the left side of the window that rests approximately 4 to 6 inches above the top of the window frame. Put a mark on the paper.
3. Measure down from the ceiling the same distance on the right side of the window and make a mark on that piece of paper.
4. Place the rod against the wall and line up the top edge of the rod against the marks you placed on the tape. Trace across the top edge of the rod.
5. Center the rod over the window. Measure from each end of the rod to the side of the window casing.
6. Mark each end of the rod on the paper, and then draw a line across the pieces of paper, using the top of the rod as your straightedge.
7. Measure inward approximately 3 to 5 inches from the marks you placed on the wall to indicate the end of the rod.
8. Place the mounting brackets on the wall and then secure them to the wall, using the supplied screws and screwdriver. If necessary, use a hand drill to drill pilot holes for the screws. Right before you completely tighten the brackets, pull the paper off the wall.
9. Measure the distance between the brackets and find the center line. Place the middle support bracket on the center line and secure it to the wall. If your rod does not have a center bracket, skip this step.
10. Place the rod over the mounting brackets and secure it in place.

Create a warm and inviting Tuscan-inspired kitchen.
Tuscan decorating is often known for its use of rustic materials, elegant finishes and warm colors. It is a popular style for people who desire a casual design to their homes and is often a favorite decor for kitchens. By incorporating a warm color palette, natural flooring materials, deep, rich cabinetry, earthy counter-top surfaces, Italian-themed lighting and Tuscan accessories, a gorgeous Italian-themed kitchen is attainable for most homeowners. The result of a Tuscan kitchen remodel is a room that is functional and beautiful to enjoy for years to come with family and friends. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Use a warm color palette. Creating a warm, Tuscan-inspired kitchen is fairly easy by using a warm color scheme throughout the space. Utilize hues such as Terra cotta orange or sunshine yellow for wall color choices and accessory pieces, and use them as a backdrop for the entire design.
2. Add rustic flooring. Italian-themed kitchens often include natural flooring surfaces that are beautiful as well as functional. Materials such as natural tile in rough finishes or distressed wood are easy to clean and also give the space an "old-world" visual appeal. Add woven area rugs to further the flooring design and to help define spaces within the kitchen, such as a dining nook or bar area.
3. Incorporate wood cabinetry. Rich woods, such as cherry, mahogany and dark oak are often seen in Tuscan kitchen remodels. These varieties are deep in color and elegant in design, which is the cornerstone of Tuscan decor. Select distressed oil-rubbed bronze hardware to complete the cabinetry and to give the kitchen an element of Tuscan flair.
4. Choose earthy counter-top surfaces. Work surfaces in a Tuscan-inspired kitchen are often elegant and utilize high-end materials. Gleaming granite or marble in warm, neutral tones are an appropriate choice and compleiment the deep wood cabinetry often seen in this type of decor as well.
5. Install Tuscan lighting fixtures. Amplify the Italian-themed kitchen decor by installing beautiful, rustic lighting in wrought-iron designs. A large chandelier in oil-rubbed bronze wrought iron highlights the kitchen nook when it hangs over a table. Add wrought-iron Tuscan-inspired sconces on either side of a wall area with a Tuscan painting in the middle as a way to create interest and drama to a space.
6. Accessorize with Italian-themed accents. Choose Tuscan-inspired accents that include icons, such as grapes, olives or roosters to further highlight the Italian decor. Stool cushions, place mats, pottery, canisters, wine racks and decorative plates are all ways to bring interest and color into the kitchen and to serve as a crowning touches to the entire design.
There are rules and regulations about fencing for residential homes with pools.
With the growing concern pertaining to water safety, communities across the United States have been implementing rules and regulations regarding fences or barriers around private pools. There are many forms of fencing made to surround pools, including perimeter fencing around the owner's entire property or isolation fencing just around the pool area. Does this Spark an idea?
Height
Most states and communities require fencing around a pool to be a minimum height, usually between four and five feet tall. Because fences can easily be climbed by children, some states also require a particular type of fencing be used to help prevent the climbing. Some types of fencing including wood slats and cast-iron style designs.
Gates
Fence gates must be self-closing and self-latching to prevent the gate from being left open, which would allow a child to gain access to the pool unattended. Latches must be out of the reach of an average-sized child, or at least 54 inches high.
Distance from Water
Many states require the fencing be a set distance from the edge of the pool. Most require that fences are located at least 20 inches from the water.
Construction
The fence must surround the entire pool and obstruct all access to it. Some states, such as Florida, require a portion of the fence be permanent and only removable through the use of tools.
Above Ground Pools
Some states allow for the fence to be placed upon the rim of an above ground pool as long as it follows the above guidelines of height and locking gate. The fence for an above ground pool must also have no more than four inches between the top of the pool wall and the bottom of the fence.

A picket fence offers good looks, but little protection or privacy.
The purpose of a fence around a yard usually incorporates up to three specific functions. Fencing can be used to increase privacy, act as a physical barrier or serve as a decorative element to your landscaping scheme. Fencing is available in a number of different materials, and an expansive number of style and aesthetic options. Putting up a fence also can become a legal matter if you don't abide by municipal building codes and regulations. Does this Spark an idea?
Best Fence Location
The single best spot to put up a fence is on the part of a yard that is level; contains no obstructions, like trees, rocks or structures; is free from intrusion into underground pipes, and avoids slopes, hills and areas of the ground soaked by water accumulation.
Windbreak Fence
One specific purpose for a yard fence is to serve as a windbreak. This type of fence is put up in an area of the yard where it can serve best to obstruct the effects of prevailing winds for reasons, like reducing heating costs or protecting plants. Panels made of fiberglass or plastic can serve the windbreak purpose well and are available in a number of different colors to make it an attractive addition.
Soundproofing Fence
The single best choice for a structure designed to suppress noise is a reinforced concrete wall. Since this can become prohibitively expensive, an effective alternative is a tall grape stake fence. Other good options for a more affordable soundproofing fence include a board-on-board fence and a high wooden panel fence that backs up a thick hedge.
Precast Concrete Blocks
Assembly of a precast concrete block fence is a relatively easy DIY job. These blocks are uniformly shaped and sized, making them easier to handle. A good way to make the sterility of concrete more aesthetically appealing is to use the fence as a type of trellis on which climbing plants, like roses or ivy, can grow.
Louvered Fence
Choose a louvered fence if you seek privacy, but want to allow light and air to pass through. A louvered fence is just like louvered blinds and is especially effective for a corner section of the yard, since it will protect you from prying eyes while still providing enough light and air to slip through. Louvers on this type of fence are available in either horizontal or vertical designs.
Living Fence
Rather than using structural material for your fence, you can create a living fence. Pruned and trimmed hedges can offer the same type of advantages of other fencing types, but integrate much more naturally into your landscape. Shrubs that are good choices for a living fence include forsythia, honeysuckle and bridal wreath. A fence designed with cacti also provides a deeper level of protection against intruders.

If you find yourself frequenting a favorite cafe or coffee shop, remodel your kitchen to create this warm, inviting look in your home. A cafe-style does not require as much work as a complete remodel. Adding the right accessories, such as a cozy table, lighting, coffee mugs and a cake stand -- preferably filled with baked goodies -- are key. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Paint the walls. Select a color that reminds you of a hot cuppa joe or a sweet pastry. Consider caramel, mocha or cinnamon.
2. Replace the current light fixture with a hanging light fixture similar to ones in the neighborhood coffee shop. Turn off the power to the kitchen at the home's main power box. Remove the screws holding the current light fixture in place, and disconnec the colored wires from the light fixtures wires. Connect the color-coded wires on the new fixture to the wires inside the ceiling, and secure with a wire nut. Gently place the wires and nuts inside the ceiling, and secure the hanging fixture to the ceiling with the screws provided and your drill. Turn the power back on.
3. Replace your dinette set with a bistro-style table and chairs. Make sure the new chairs are padded, so that you will be comfortable if you decide to set up your laptop on the table and spend the morning browsing.
4. Decorate the space with fresh flowers in a cappuccino-colored vase.
5. Hang a chalkboard on a wall to display the day's menu, or simply use it to post your to-do list. The chalkboard will underscore the cafe theme.
6. Add to the ambiance with a coffee maker, espresso machine and glass-covered cake dish.
7. Put in cup hooks under the cabinets. Hang a variety of coffee mugs on the hooks. Hanging and displaying the mugs will also give you easy access and more cabinet space.
8. Hang checked curtains on the windows. Checked curtains work well in a cafe-themed, as they encourage relaxing with a second cup of coffee.
You want to clean a painted fence with a pressure washer because you've heard it's faster than doing it by hand, but you're worried you'll remove paint while pressure washing the fence. Fear not. Not only is it true that cleaning a painted fence with a pressure washer is faster than doing it by hand, but with the right knowledge and using the right technique you'll quickly pressure wash a painted fence, while leaving all of its paint intact. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
Setup
1. Pour an ounce of household dish detergent into the five gallon bucket. Add six parts water to one part household bleach, filling the bucket to the four-gallon mark.
2. Connect a garden hose to the pressure washer and water spigot (faucet). Connect the pressure washing hose to the pressure washer and pressure washing gun and wand.
3. Screw a brass soap tip to the end-of-wand soap applicator and then connect to the end of the wand. Insert brass hose screen, which also acts as a weight, into the pvc tubing. Slide the pvc tubing over the soap applicator intake nipple.
Preparing to Clean
4. Clear anything and everything away from in front of the painted fence to be cleaned, if at all possible. Remove any vines growing on the fence.
5. Spray all nearby plants that will get wet with cleaning solution overspray with plain water to prevent damage, particularly if it's a hot day. Cover any and all nearby plants especially susceptible to damage from bleach with thin plastic sheeting or plastic garbage bags, after spraying them with plain water.
6. Turn on the water spigot and start the pressure washer. Adjust the engine speed down to low, and lower the end of pvc tubing with brass screen/weight into the cleaning solution bucket.
Apply Cleaning Solution
7. Stand six feet away from fence while aiming the pressure washing gun at the fence, and depress the gun trigger while watching the cleaning solution come up through the clear pvc tubing to the end of the wand soap applicator. Once the cleaning solution has made it near to the soap applicator, start at the top of the fence, and with a back and forth motion, swing your pressure washing gun so as to cover the fence with cleaning solution.
8. Work your way around the fence, moving the bucket of cleaning solution with you as you go. Do not work so far ahead of the sprayed area that it starts to dry behind you.
9. Check each recently sprayed section of fence for any missed areas. Re-spray any areas not covered by your initial application.
10. Let the cleaning solution run down the fence. Wait a few minutes to let it work. Depending on the temperature and fence material, don't wait so long that it has dried. Remove the soap applicator tip, keeping it above the height of the bucket.
11. Put the 25-degree fan tip onto the end of the wand. Raise the engine speed of the pressure washer and stand about six feet away from the fence. Aim the pressure washing gun at the fence and depress the trigger handle, rinsing the fence down.
Stucco is a common exterior for Italian Renaissance style homes.
Dating back to the the 15th century, Filippo Brunelleschi is generally considered to be the first Italian Renaissance architect. House plans depicting the Italian Renaissance style found their way into America early in the 20th century. Strong, classical Roman elements incorporate columns, domes, arches, pediments and pilasters in Italian Renaissance architecture. Stucco, stone, marble and terracotta tile typify materials used in Italian Renaissance construction. Does this Spark an idea?
Exterior
Stucco and stone are common materials used in the construction of an Italian Renaissance home. A low-pitched, hipped roof (one in which all sides slope downward toward the walls) with terracotta tiles is a typical feature. Decorative brackets supporting moderately-wide, overhanging, boxed roof eaves are prominent in Italian Renaissance homes. Symmetrical design, recessed porches with arched openings, plus classical columns, pilasters and pediments describe the Italian Renaissance architecture.
Interior
Planked or parquet hardwood, marble and terracotta tiles are frequently used in Italian Renaissance floors. Area rugs add cozy comfort to wood, marble or tile floors. Wall-to-wall carpet is seldom seen in this style of home. Marble counter tops, fireplace mantels and columns enhance the Italian Renaissance ambiance. Scagliola is a less expensive substitute for natural marble. Venetian plaster, a decorative stucco, adds texture to walls.
Lighting
Wrought iron, distressed copper, bronze and cast iron are construction materials commonly used in crafting Italian Renaissance lighting. Twisted metal chandeliers, antique wall sconces and hanging lanterns complement this decor. Wrought iron or copper table or floor lamps are functional and blend seamlessly with the Italian Renaissance design.
Vizcaya
Vizcaya is a Floridian estate featuring one of the most well-known, elaborate Italian Renaissance homes in America. Industrialist James Deering launched construction of his dream home in 1914 in Miami, Fla. Modeled after an Italian Renaissance style palace, the entire structure was constructed of concrete to withstand hurricane winds. Steel enforced floors were impervious to decay and termites. Clay tiles from old Cuban homes were shipped to Florida and comprise the roof.

Wrought-iron fencing is often found around brick homes.
A wrought-iron fence placed around your yard can be an ideal choice if you live in a brick or stone home because the wrought iron complements the brick or stone. This can provide a classic look for your home's exterior. Some companies use aluminum when manufacturing ornamental wrought-iron fences, which reduce the weight and cost of the fence. You can install an ornamental wrought-iron fence on your property with the help of a friend or two, saving money on installation costs. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Lay out the fence line, going around any immovable objects such as trees or sheds.
2. Mark the location of the fence posts along the fence line, following the manufacturer's instructions regarding the spacing of the fence posts.
3. Dig holes for the fence posts with a post-hole digger. Dig the holes deep enough so that they can hold six inches of gravel and at least one-third of the fence posts.
4. Fill the holes with 6 inches of gravel and tamp it down with the butt end of a 2-by-4 board.
5. Set the corner and terminal, or end, posts by filling the holes halfway with concrete, then setting the posts in them. Check the posts for plumb -- vertically straight -- and then finish filling the hole with concrete. Check the posts for plumb again, and adjust them if needed. Allow to concrete to set for at least four to five days.
6. Tie a string tightly between the corner and terminal posts. You will use this as a guide when setting the line posts.
7. Install the line posts, using the same method you used when installing the terminal and corner posts. When positioning the line posts, place them so that the outer edge is against the string. Allow them to set for at least four to five days.
8. Connect the fencing to the posts. The precise installation method can vary, depending on the manufacturer, as you may be installing entire fence panels, or constructing the fencing by assembling the fencing.
9. Install the hardware for the gates, following the manufacturer's instructions, then attach the gates.
A cast iron pipe can become clogged through a variety of ways, and there are a couple different ways to clean the clog to get your pipe flowing again. Once you find the exact area of the clog, you can clean your cast iron pipe. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Find the clog. If you notice that only one sink or tub appears to be affected by the clog, then most likely your clog is due to some back up around that specific fixture, which should make your job a lot easier. If it appears that multiple areas of your plumbing are being affected by the clog, it could be a main line that's become clogged, which does require more work and perhaps the help of a professional with a pipe snake.
2. Check to see if only one drain is appearing to be affected by your clogged cast iron pipe. If this is the case, it will be a quick fix.
3. Remove the drain cover that is being affected by the clog. Some will require you to remove screws, and others you will simply have to pry off. This will allow you to see down into the drain. If there is an obvious obstruction, remove it.
4. Plunge the open drain. As long as the clog is not too far into a main pipe, your plunger should be able to clear any blockage. After you have finished plunging and unclogged your pipe, it may be a good idea to use some drain cleaner just to make sure you have completely removed the blockage.
5. Replace the drain cover by screwing it back into place. Then close the drain. Turn on your faucet and allow some water to collect. Open your drain back up, and make sure the water is draining at a normal pace. If it is, you have cleaned your clogged cast iron pipe, and your plumbing should run just fine.

Wrought iron fences can bring quiet elegance to your landscape.
If you have an existing concrete pool deck, patio or other area on your property that you want to enclose with a wrought iron fence, it's not necessary to rip out the concrete to install the fence. Wrought iron fences are easily installed on top of concrete surfaces. The fence manufacturer will supply you with fence posts modified to include a bottom plate to use to secure the posts to the concrete pad. Using the same principle, wrought iron railings can be attached to brick, stucco or concrete walls or buildings via a special plate welded to the end of the railing. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Purchase wrought iron fence posts from your fence manufacturer with an iron plate welded on the bottom.
2. Determine the location of the posts for the fence, following the fence manufacturer's instructions and recommendations.
3. Set the post in position and mark the location on the concrete of the bolt holes in the welded-on bottom plate, using an indelible marker. Typically, there are four bolts that secure each fence post to the top of a concrete slab.
4. Drill three-eighth-inch starter holes at the marked locations, using a concrete drill bit.
5. Pound the outer fastener of the concrete wedgeanchor into the drilled holes, using a regular hammer. Ensure the tops of the outer fasteners are flush or slightly below the grade of the concrete pad, so the fence posts sit level and flush on the concrete.
6. Position the bottom plate of the fence post so its holes are lined up with the installed outer fasteners of the concrete wedge anchors.
7. Bolt the bottom plate securely to the concrete by driving the bolt portion of the concrete wedge anchor into the outer fasteners, through the holes in the bottom plate. Do not over-tighten the bolts, but ensure they are snug against the top of the bottom plate.
Wrought iron is a favorite metal for ornamental outdoor furniture. It is also used in buildings, indoor decoration and fences. If not taken care of properly, wrought iron can rust and wear, making a once beautiful piece of furniture an eyesore. Thankfully, refinishing wrought iron is simple. It just takes a few products and a bit of elbow grease. You can paint wrought iron to suit your tastes once you have refinished it. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Remove any rust that may have formed on your wrought iron with sandpaper. Use an up-and-down motion.
2. Rinse off the wrought iron with your garden hose. Allow the object to dry completely.
3. Spray the wrought iron with rust converter. If you aren't already wearing your gloves, put them on before working with the rust converter.
4. Spread the rust converter with a paint brush to make sure it is even. Allow to dry.
5. Apply primer to your wrought iron. Allow to dry. You can usually find metal primer alongside the regular paint primer at your local hardware store.
6. Paint your wrought iron--and your object will look like new.

is a popular design style that can be replicated easily at home.
Moroccan décor is a popular choice for both traditional and contemporary home design. The furniture of this style is typically ornate and one-of-a-kind, featuring intricate woodwork and hand-painted patterns. To replicate Moroccan style on your own piece of furniture, it just requires a few basic materials and steps. Even ordinary pieces of furniture can take on a new life with Moroccan-style paint. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Prepare your furniture's surface. Remove any dust or dirt. If you are painting wood furniture, you may need to sand down the wood with coarse-grit sandpaper. Remove any hardware, such as drawer pulls or handles, or tape over them with painter's tape.
2. Choose colors that are emblematic of Moroccan style. Use water-based paints in warm colors, such as reds, oranges and gold. Use vibrant shades of blue and green to add interest. Brown, white and tan are perfect for contrasting color combinations or as base coats for the furniture.
3. Use repeating patterns. Moroccan style is known for its intricate patterns, repeated over a surface symmetrically. Paint damasks, arches and other geometric shapes in varying color combinations. For painting ideas, try duplicating the scroll work of wrought iron with paint on your furniture.
4. Stencil patterns onto your Moroccan-inspired furniture. These are available in most arts and crafts or hobby shops. Or you can create your own stencils by printing out pictures of the design you want to create.
5. Try aging your furniture to make it look more authentically Moroccan. Moroccan furniture is rarely seen flawless and polished. To add interest and character to your piece, wait for your paint to dry. Lightly sand your furniture's surface with fine-grit sandpaper in various places.

Compare prices of plate stands before you purchase one.
After years of purchasing beautiful decorative plates, you have finally decided to put them on display. There are wire and adhesive plate stands, which can be hung on the wall, and ornamental metal, wood and plastic plate stands, which can be placed on tables, counters and bookshelves. You will need to look at the rooms you want to display your plates in and match your plate stands to those rooms.
Instructions
1. Write down the different plate stand styles available. There are a variety ranging from clear plastic plate stands to wrought iron plate stands. Consider the room where you would like to place the stands when making this decision.
2. Decide how many plate stands you wish to purchase and if you would like to buy in bulk. Normally you can get the best price by buying a large quantity. If you decide to buy in bulk, divide the total price of the plate stands by the number of plate stands you are getting. For example, if you are paying $100 for 20 plate stands, you would divide 100 by 20. Which would mean you are paying $5 per plate stand.
3. Write down prices for plate stands listed on websites like Gibson Holders, Fine Home Displays, Xylem Design and Tripar International. Make sure you match the plate stand style to the price. Include possible shipping and handling fees, which would raise the actual price per plate.
4. Visit local department stores like Target, Kmart, Kohl's and Macy's and record plate stand prices. Write down the style of the plate stand next to each price.
5. View the different prices listed for the plate stand styles you wish to purchase. Organize plate stand prices by least expensive to most expensive.

Iron railings outside a home usually are installed along a walkway or on the stairs leading to an entry door. Though metal is rugged and can last years even when exposed to the elements, annual attention to address any problems will slow deterioration and oxidation while maintaining an attractive appearance. If railings require emergency help, spend considerable time scraping, patching and painting the first time. After that, regular maintenance should not require much time.
Instructions
1. Clear away vegetation. With a hand-held branch cutter, remove any branches from bushes or shrubs that brush up against the iron railings. The moisture on leaves and branches that become intertwined with or are pushed up against the railings will spread the raindrops and dew onto the metal. This moisture, over time, breaks down the protective paint surface and eats into the iron. Clearing vegetation immediately around the railings will encourage air circulation that will dry the dampness after a rainfall.
2. Scrape the iron surface. Place a drop cloth, small tarp or newspaper under the railings to catch any debris removed from the railings and any drippings that occur during the surface prep and painting steps. Use a scraper to remove any loose paint, dirt and crusts of rust. With a wire brush, hand-held abrasives or power tools or accessories for power drills, remove remaining corrosion down to the bare metal. Carefully inspect all areas of the railing, including the handrails, spindles and any decorative sections.
3. Prep the surface. Some areas, especially under railings and where spindles meet the railings, might have slight deterioration that require repair. Apply metal or mesh patches cut to size to cover the damaged areas. Adhesives or bonding agents made for metal, or solder, will be needed to keep these repairs in place. Sand any patches so they blend with the rest of the metal. Sand away any burrs or other uneven areas.
4. Apply an undercoat. Use a metal primer that is applied with a narrow paintbrush to help get paint into all tight areas and around any decorative sections. Sometimes, two coats are required, especially if you have sanded the surface to the bare metal or have added patches. Allow the first coat to dry thoroughly before adding a second coat.
5. Apply the topcoat. Select the desired color. Most railings are either black or white, but paint for outdoor metal comes in a variety of colors to complement the color of a home. Apply the paint with a clean narrow paintbrush. Two coats will provide adequate coverage and added protection. Allow the first coat to thoroughly dry before adding the second.
6. Clean up the area. After all work is completed, carefully remove the protective covering that was placed under the railings. Either discard or shake it out in a trash can if you plan to use it again.

There is a decorative accessory gift to suit everyone and every occasion, whether the recipient is a collector, appreciates something unique or simply enjoys things of beauty. In fact, there are so many choices that it can be challenging to select only one. In the case of a child or newlyweds, it may be appropriate to begin a collection, with the first gift in a series, set or theme.
Nautical
Nautical items are interesting decorative accessories and exceptional gifts for collectors and nautical enthusiasts. Some items are reproductions of antique nautical treasures and have historical significance. For example, Grace Galleries, Inc., in Harpswell, Maine has decorative gifts such as antique octants, sextants, compasses and maps. There is a solid brass and hardwood octant reproduction inspired by a 19th-century instrument. This octant has an 11 1/2-inch radius and is fully functional though not calibrated for navigational use. There is also a British Captain's Brass Sextant, a full-scale reproduction of a 6-inch radius vernier readout nautical sextant, presented in a hardwood case. From the R.M.S. Titanic, White Star Line, comes a Limited Release Boxed Gimbaled Brass Compass in a hardwood case. The 4-inch compass mimics the original that went down with the ill-fated ship. A Black Lacquered Nautical Old World Map Box is a work of art in itself. It is inlaid with the etching of an old world map and is handmade by a painstaking method of pouring many layers of lacquer over the box.
Nativity
In some Christian families, it is a tradition to hand down nativity sets from one generation to the next. Collectors worldwide know the trademark name Fontanini, which is synonymous with nativity sets and figurines manufactured by Roman, Inc. The company produces over 11,000 decorative items, including music boxes, angels and glitter domes, among other products. Fontanini Nativity items are available individually or in sets. Individual pieces make ideal gifts because the nativity set can grow with an addition annually or more frequently. Figurines come in a range of sizes, so be sure to check on the correct size before making a purchase. The 5-inch and 12-inch figurines are very popular with collectors who display their nativity sets every Christmas. Possible gift items include stables, city walls and entrance gates, waterwheels with mills, spice markets, and accessories like pomegranate trees. Figurines range from the Holy Family and the three kings to angels, shepherds, stable hands, soldiers and villagers, camels, goats and donkeys.

A hibachi grill is ideal for searing small pieces of meat and vegetables
The hibachi grill dates back to the sixth century, when the Japanese used it as a brazier. Today, the hibachi is a cast iron portable grill fueled mainly by the use of charcoal. The portability of the hibachi is one of the features that make the grill popular in modern society. Does this Spark an idea?
Size and Function
The hibachi grill is smaller than the regular backyard grill. This means that the cooking area is smaller. Cooking hamburgers for a large group would not be practical because of the size. Smaller sizes of food have traditionally been cooked on the hibachi. Kabobs, slices of steaks, seafood and skewered vegetables can quickly be seared over the open flames and served.
The secret to cooking on a cast iron hibachi grill is the intense heat. Flame-seared food cooked on a charcoal hibachi has a special flavor that can't be duplicated in foods cooked by other methods.
Vents
Most cast iron hibachi grills are not equipped with adjustable racks that will raise and lower the food from the heat source. The trick is to adjust the heat to the distance of the food.
High heat is the most important element of cooking on a cast iron hibachi grill. The hibachi doesn't come with a cover, and the openness will help keep the flames going on the charcoal. The vents on the bottom of the grill also will aid in the air movement the fire needs to keep burning. Opening the vents allows more air to circulate, fanning the flames. Closing the vents will cause the flames to die down and hold the heat within the coals.
Practice adjusting the vents so that food can be seared over an open flame and then, for larger pieces of food, continue to cook over the heat radiating from the coals.
Tier the Charcoal
The small size of the cast iron hibachi grill will not prevent you from laying the charcoal at different levels to control the heat at each side. A two-level fire in the hibachi can be achieved by placing a higher level of charcoal on one side of the grill, bringing the flames and heat higher to the surface where the food is cooking. After the food is seared on one side of the grill to hold in the juices, it can be moved to the other side of the grill, where the charcoal is not as high, to continue cooking.

Iron railings and gates add a touch of style to your decor.
Iron gates and railings add a nice element to your indoor or outdoor areas. Indoor iron railings are a suitable option for staircases and upper-level floors where a barrier is needed to prevent someone from falling to the area below. Outdoor iron railings can line decks, porches, patios and sidewalks, or they can be used as fencing around the yard. Iron gates provide a functional finishing touch that lets you go in and out of a certain area. Once you decide that you want the beauty of ironwork in your area, you will have to choose the products you want. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Decide on the type of iron you want for your project. You can choose wrought iron, which is usually expensive and suitable for outdoor projects. Cast iron is another option, which is usually less expensive than wrought iron and is suitable for both indoor and outdoor projects. Other options, such as iron-plated metal or concrete, are sometimes available.
2. Consider what decorative accents you want for the railing or gate. Some iron railings and gates have wooden accents that add warmth and style to the item. For example, some stair railings have a cherry handrail with iron balusters.
3. Choose the color iron you want for your project. Most iron gates and railings are white or black, however, other colors are usually available as part of a custom order.
4. Look at the ironwork patterns available. Generally, simple patterns like straight bars are usually less expensive than intricate patterns. When you choose the ironwork pattern, consider the look of the area where you are placing the railing or gate. If you have an informal space, intricate ironwork may look out of place, while simple ironwork may look out of place in a formal area.
5. Ask about the installation costs involved. Even if you plan on installing the railings and gates, you will still need installation supplies, such as bolts to secure the pieces and concrete to support the bolts for outdoor projects.
Bluegills are a feisty little sunfish that are very fun to catch. They are also very good to eat. A large bluegill may reach 10 to 17 inches in length and can weigh as much as 3 pounds. Although it can be quite easy to catch small bluegills from the shores of many ponds, lakes and river basins; landing larger, edible ones can be tricky. Bluegills bite on a variety of bait. Some anglers use wax worms, small spinners, grubs, lunch meat and jigs. Fly fishing is also an option, however, that is an entirely different discussion altogether. Here, we will cover what many consider the two best ways to catch nice bluegill: Bobber (float) fishing and Jigging, using good, old-fashion night crawlers as bait.
Instructions
Catch Bluegill
1. Find an appropriate bluegill pond or lake. If you are unfamiliar with an area, contact the local conservation department or local bait shop personnel. Adequate bluegill population will depend on several factors. The abundance of predatory fish in a particular body of water will determine the number of nice bluegill. For example, a pond that is rich in largemouth bass or large pike, may not be a good environment. Such fish feed on young bluegill, which means few of them will have an opportunity to get very big. You will want to find a spot where 8 to 10-inch fish are common. Although it's quite enjoyable for children to pull out 3-inch bluegill from the shore; a serious angler will get quite bored and waste bait. Go after the big ones.
2. Look for bluegill beds. These beds are small circular depressions in the shallow waters. During the spawning season, male fish scope the shallows looking for unattended beds in which to fertilize eggs left by females. After the spawning season in late May or early June, bluegills will still congregate near the beds. Also look for small patches of Lilly pads. Bluegill tend to find cover in the pads and will strike bait that appears in front of patches of vegetation.
3. Begin fishing with a standard hook and bobber setup and a lightweight rod and reel. A No. 8 hook is recommended. A good rule of thumb is to use a bobber that is small enough for a fish to easily pull it under water, and large enough to float your bait. It is also recommended to place 1 or 2 BB-size spit shot sinkers 2 inches above your hook. This will ensure that your bait will find its way down to where the fish will see it. Do not use a sinker that is too big. It is best for your bait to travel towards the bottom of the lake slowly. This will give you ample time to set your hook. Depending on water depth, your bobber should be set deep enough to hang your bait just above the bottom of the lake. Cast your line into a relatively open spot, preferably along Lilly pad and weed lines. Keep a close eye on your bobber. Hungry bluegill will bite almost immediately. If your bobber begins to "pop" up and down, a fish is nibbling. Let him nibble until your bobber begins to drift away from you. This is when you set your hook. Note: Bluegill have small mouths. It is important to use the appropriate amount of force when setting your hook. Pulling too hard will jerk the hook out of the fish's mouth.
4. Try jigging. If you are not catching fish using a bobber, the fish are likely hiding in deeper water. This is common when the water temperature is below 65 to 70 degrees. Jigging, or bottom fishing, is simple, however it requires a bit of skill to know when to set your hook. By removing your bobber and adding 1 or 2 more BB sinkers, you will be ready to bottom fish. Again, you do not want your bait to travel to the bottom of the lake too quickly. You will, however, need to have enough weight above your hook to cast your line. When your bait hits the water, allow it to sink slowly, keeping a close watch on your line. As your bait sinks, reel it in very slowly, giving it the occasional "jig" or short tug. If you feel a nibble, wait about 2 seconds and set the hook. Again, do not pull too hard. Note: If you are fishing from the shore, make sure you are able to cast into deeper waters. This may involved switching to a larger rod and reel set up.

The front door sets the entire tone of a home. It can give folks the impression of a stately manor or offer the impression that the home is a dingy hovel. Front doors can be ornate, intricate and 9 or more feet high, while others are functional steel slabs, often high in security but not taste. Advancements in the door industry have made it possible to combine the best of both worlds. Front-door designs and materials have also advanced over the years, making the doors more durable and longer-lasting than ever before. Any front door should come with some type of warranty, as well as boasting a design that pleases the homeowner. Does this Spark an idea?
Function
Front doors make a statement, but they are also expected to fulfill some vital functions. In addition to being the first thing people see upon entering the home, thus setting the impression instantly, they need to do more than just look good. Quality front doors will be able to withstand all the elements, from freezing rain to blaring sun, and be tough enough to keep out burglars and other unwanted visitors. Doors set in a foyer or other open area may also serve to let in a little sunlight.
Types
Wood is one of the most common materials used for front doors, but it's not always the best choice. Wood is rich, fabulously grained and warm-looking, but it is also known to warp, crack and buckle. It's also more easily chopped through or broken by intruders. Metal doors provide better security, but older steel doors can also peel after years of weathering. A sturdier construction has come about for newer doors of all types: wood, steel, aluminum or even fiberglass. Wood and fiberglass doors are usually solid throughout, while steel or aluminum will have an insulated core and an outer covering.
Features
Even doors that are not made of wood often have a wood-grain finish, to resemble the real thing. This gives homeowners the warm wood look with the added security of metal or fiberglass. Some doors may stand alone, while others may be framed by door-length windows or even feature a double-door setup. Windows on the door itself are another option; they let light in but also allow for easier break-ins. Door hardware is another feature to consider. The small details--such as doorknobs, locks, door knockers, peepholes and other embellishments--can finish off the look with style.
Considerations
People who like to leave the front door open for additional sunlight or air may want to consider a storm door. A storm door can add a tacky touch or enhance the overall effect of the door it protects. Some of the most ornate storm doors are made of wrought iron, and are complete with full landscape scenes, animals, scrolls or a number of other designs. Wrought-iron storm doors are hugely popular in the southwest, but can be found nationwide. Other people may want to opt for a storm door that is the least noticeable, with a frame that matches the front door and no embellishments over the storm glass or screen. While many storm doors have very poor-quality locks, those with a sturdy metal frame can harbor fairly hefty locking systems that add one more layer of security to the home.
Warning
A quality installation will cost a pretty penny. Some doors themselves may be only a couple of hundred dollars, but the entire setup, hardware and installation fees may raise the price to thousands of dollars.
Heavy-duty doors, especially those chosen for their security value, will do no good if they are not properly installed with deep enough screws and sturdy enough locks.
Another consideration is which types of doors are allowed in the neighborhood. While doors can be a unique and personal statement, some homeowners' associations have strict guidelines that curtail the type---or even color---of door that's allowed on neighborhood homes.

Finials are the small ornate objects on top of grandfather clocks. Finials can also be used on very ornate railings in a cathedral. Finials can be cast out of brass, but you can make your own custom finials out of wood. The creation of a finial is open to your own imagination, but they usually consist of a small pyramid shape no more than a few inches tall. To picture what a finial looks like, think of chess board pieces; the queen resembles a finial.
Instructions
1. Measure up 3/4 inch from the base and make a mark all the way around the block. Cut the block on a band saw tapering from the mark symmetrically on all four sides up to 1/2 inch square at the top.
2. Clamp the block in a vise by its base, sticking straight up.
3. Measure and make a mark 1/2 inch down from the top of the block.
4. Insert a small disc into the rotary tool. Begin shaping the finial into a graceful curve between the two lines by sanding up and down the sides. Continue tapering the wood until you have a small 1/2 inch block at the top of the wood.
5. Round the block with the rotary tool by blending and rounding all the corners, delicately smoothing the end until its round as you can make it with the tool.
6. Hold sandpaper between your thumb and index finger and begin spinning the sandpaper around the end of the wood until the round shape is as round as you can make it. Remove the finial from the vise. Hold the finial by the square base in your fingers and spin the round part in the sandpaper that you are holding in the other hand. Continue sanding the finial by hand until its uniform and symmetrical.
are standalone room dividers that homeowners can place in any area or room in the house. The screens come in a variety of styles, colors and textures to provide a decorative touch to any room. The dressing screens can resolve a decorating problem or provide a splash of design and color to a room. Does this Spark an idea?
Uses
The decorative dressing screens can provide privacy in the bedroom or bath. In addition to the ability to provide instant privacy, decorative screens can also hide problem areas in a room. For example, a decorative screen can hide a work area in a bedroom or corner of a living room. In the bedroom, place the screen behind the bed for a colorful and interesting headboard. The screens can also have a decorative use for a room to add color and design without changing the color of the walls. They can also filter the light in the home when placed in front of windows. The screens can hide thermostats, air conditioners or other items that detract from the d cor of the room.
Designs
Decorative dressing screens come in a wide variety of colors and designs to suit any d cor. Simple screens may have a solid color or windowpane style, which works well in a room with a minimalist design or modern d cor. Screens may also depict natural scenes such as flowers and trees to add to the design in your home. Room dividers or dressing screens depict city scenes to create a cosmopolitan look in the room.
Textures
Dressing screens can be made of wrought iron, wood, steel and synthetic materials. Panels may be wood covered in heavy or sheer fabric. Sheer and opaque materials allow light to filter through the screen and accentuate the design on the panels. Solid wood dressing screens provide complete privacy and coordinate well with a traditional room design. Use solid decorative dressing screens to hide problem areas in the room.
Style
Decorative dressing screens may have two or three panels, depending on the size needs of the room. Screens also vary in height and can have rounded or squared sharp edges. The style of dressing screen depends on the style of the room. For example, in a French country room, screens with open wrought iron edges and tops work well. In an Asia-inspired room, squared screens with a lacquered finish fit perfectly.

Corrugated boards are composed of three boards in total: an inner corrugated or fluted lining and two flat outer lining boards that sandwich the corrugated one. Corrugated board is readily available as packaging boxes, which usually sell for less than a dollar each. This material makes a good medium for signs for street people and ad hoc protestors. If you need a cheap and simple way to express an idea visually, you can make a sign using corrugated board in under half an hour.
Instructions
1. Lay the corrugated box in front of you so that the largest flat surface is facing you and the top opening of the box is oriented upward.
2. Cut along the four edges of the flat surface. Try to cut as straight as possible with your exacto knife. Hold a metal ruler against the edge as a guide for cutting if you need a precise cut. Set the rest of the box pieces aside.
3. Write your message on the corrugated board with the permanent marker. Use a dark color like black, which shows up best on the brown-colored board. Fill up the whole area of the board by using large letters if you have a brief message. Make the writing legible from far away by properly spacing your words. Avoid cursive writing, which is harder to read at a distance.
Dress up the look of your staircase with iron balusters. Choose from a variety of iron baluster designs and consider using more than one design for a custom look. Learn replace your old balusters with new iron ones and you'll save on installation and be able to make your own design choices. Lay out the balusters before you cut them so you can decide what pattern you want before you begin the installation process. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Remove the old balusters by cutting through them. Use a jigsaw to cut through the middle of each baluster and twist until it comes out. Use pliers to remove nails, and sandpaper the holes lightly to clean out leftover glue.
2. Measure from inside the holes at the top and bottom to decide how long your iron balusters need to be. Use a band saw to cut the iron balusters to size. Cut the same amount off of the top and bottom, and shim with wood shims to keep the design on your new baluster centered.
3. Squirt epoxy in the holes and insert your iron balusters. Make the baluster straight and tape it in place with low tack painter's tape. If you have shoes or caps on your balusters, tape them to the baluster so they don't get glued into the wrong position. Let the epoxy dry overnight.
4. Remove the tape from your shoes. Set your shoes in place and secure by screwing them to the floor or rail. Use a drill and set the screws that came with the shoes through the holes in the shoe and into the floor or rail.
5. Pull off the painter's tape and slide the shoes and caps into position. Screw them to the top and bottom of each baluster.

Metal plant stands are beautiful, with their intricate twists and turns, but their intended use makes them prone to rust. Rust, chips and fading on your metal plant stand ruin the striking effect. You can fix all of these with a quick coat of paint. The paints that are available specifically for metal with rust inhibitors built in make your job easy and will make your plant stand attractive again.
Instructions
Paint Metal Plant Stands
1. Prepare your plant stand for paint by first washing it with a mild detergent and water mix. Then using a wire brush remove any loose paint and rust. Use your sandpaper to smooth any surface conditions. Rinse your plant stand and allow it to dry completely.
2. Spray your metal plant stand with the primer following the primer manufacturer's recommendation and allowing time between coats for the primer to dry completely. Two coats of primer will help you to seal the metal surface and prevent rusting from normal use and watering.
3. Paint your metal plant stand by spraying two light coats of paint to all of the exposed surfaces. Light coats of paint dry quickly, so catch any drips quickly. Move around the plant stand yourself rather than turning the plant stand to avoid finger prints or smears on your finish.

You can identify painter's tape by its blue color.
When amateur do-it-yourselfers attempt to refinish cast iron surfaces, chipping and shedding often ensue. Cast iron is a nonporous, slick surface, incapable of accepting new finishes unless you pretreat it with a special acidic base coat. This coating will etch the bathtub, leaving the surface better suited for adhesion. Once the tub is properly prepared, you should finish it with a paint formulated to provide an attractive glossy sheen and strong durability in the face of heavy moisture and duress.
Instructions
1. Scrub the cast iron bathtub with a trisodium phosphate cleanser using a coarse sponge. Rinse the cast iron with wet rags and wait between 2 to 4 hours for it to dry.
2. Cover areas next to the cast iron tub with masking paper, drop cloths and painter's tape.
3. Spray the cast iron bathtub with metal etching primer, maintaining a distance of 8 inches between the cast iron and the spray nozzle at all times. Wait 6 hours for the primed cast iron tub to dry.
4. Spray the primed cast iron bathtub with appliance epoxy spray paint, maintaining a distance of 8 inches between the cast iron and the spray nozzle at all times. Wait 8 hours before filling the tub.

Chain-link fences make strong supports for trellises and plants.
Although you can install a trellis next to a chain-link fence, doing so isn't necessary if the purpose is to provide a structure for vining, climbing plants. Gardeners generally use the fencing itself to trellis a broad range of landscape plants and edible plants. You can attach trellis materials such as wooden lattice next to fence posts if you don't like the chain-link look. But this can make it more difficult for you to prune vines and climbers. Does this Spark an idea?
Placing a Trellis Next to Chain-Link
Attach a long length of lightweight wooden lattice, such as the kind that screens the bottoms of raised porches, to the posts of chain-link fences with U-bolts and to the fence links with twisted wire. If vines and climbing plants will grow up the trellis, keep in mind that they will likely wend their way through the links of the fence as well. This can make pruning a bit more difficult.
A series of smaller, decorative wood or wrought iron trellises can also be attached to a chain link fence for support and screening. If placed a few feet from the fence, they need to be well anchored in the ground to avoid leaning when vines become heavy.
Benefits of Attaching Trellis to Fence
Aside from screening yards and hiding what some consider an unsightly, utilitarian look, lattice or other trellis materials attached to chain-link fencing can increase home protection. It is easy for trespassers to climb chain-link fencing due to the toeholds its links provide. The Rick's Custom Fencing & Decking website notes that trellising materials attached to a fence can make it taller and harder to climb. It adds that growing thorny plants such as climbing roses, Oregon grape and blackberries further helps deter intruders.
Trellising Plants Directly on Chain-Link Fencing
Flowering vines, climbing rose bushes and vining vegetables receive good support and provide lush, colorful screens when they grow up chain-link fencing. They also save planting space by growing vertically instead of sprawling across the garden. "Texas Gardener" magazine says that vertical gardening is easier on the back and helps reduce fruit and foliage diseases. It adds that "Nothing hides a chain-link fence better than a crop of pole beans."
Vining and Climbing Plants
Ornamental choices for trellising include annuals and perennials. Annuals, such as morning glories and sweet peas, can quickly cover a chain-link fence with foliage and color. But aside from needing to be replanted each growing season, they leave a trellis or fence completely exposed in winter. While some herbaceous perennials die back to the ground in winter, the branches of woody perennials such as grapevines, roses and honeysuckle remain in place unless pruned. For year-round color and screening, The Penn Fencing Inc. website says vining evergreens, such as Persian ivy, may be a good choice.
