Unique Headboard Ideas

Headboards set the mood in your master bedroom.

While plenty of people have beds without headboards, headboards add character and visual appeal to beds and rooms. But ready-made headboards tend to be expensive and lack individual style. Whether you're a die-hard individualist or just want to spice up the master bedroom with something different, think outside the usual range of headboard materials, colors and shapes. Does this Spark an idea?

Shutters

Choose a bright, cheery color, like turqoise, for the shutters.

If you live in a cabin, cottage or home decorated in the popular "shabby chic" style, a headboard made from wooden shutters will add a spot of character to your master bedroom. Get enough shutters that, when laid side by side, they are as wide as your bed. Paint them with low or no-VOC paint. VOCs, or volatile organic compounds, are smelly and bad for your health. Apply an antiquing treatment, or simply sand the paint away in spots. Attach the shutters together with a tried-and-true method, such as wood strips, and enjoy your shabby new headboard. According to The Better Sleep Council, a sturdy headboard "can help create a sense of stability," which contributes to the overall restfulness of your bedroom.

Surfboards

Surfboards come in many sizes and colors.

Whether you live near the ocean or just wish you did, a headboard made of surfboards will infuse your room with seaside spirit. Assemble a small collection of battered-beyond-repair surfboards. (Cutting up perfectly good surfboards would be extremely costly, not to mention frowned upon as wasteful by the surfing community.) If possible, have a variety of board types. There are many types to choose from, including longboards, thruster boards with squashtails and "fish" boards with swallowtails. Cut the boards---wear a respirator and clean up carefully afterward so you don't breathe harmful foam dust---and seal off the cut portions with epoxy so they don't shed foam. Connect the most visually interesting sections of the boards, such as the tails, in a vertical form.

Wrought Iron Spikes

Repurpose a wrought iron gate as your headboard.

A headboard crafted from wrought iron spikes---the kind you see on fences surrounding spooky old houses---would be ideal for medieval reenactment enthusiasts, history buffs and role-playing game aficionados. A cheap yet interesting alternative to actual wrought iron spikes is to paint black silhouetted spikes directly on the wall behind the bed. Or follow the suggestion of the website "Design*Sponge" and embroider a "wrought iron" design on a more traditional padded headboard.

Diy Shabby Chic Metal Bed Ideas

A metal bed feels light and simple in a tone-on-tone bedroom.

Shabby chic decor creates a soft, friendly atmosphere that looks a little worn around the edges. This type of decor favors soft colors, mixed fabrics and blending furniture from many eras together, based on a unified palette and simplicity or sameness of lines and shapes. Metal bed frames are particularly good choices for the shabby chic style because the metal can be easily painted and distressed to match the colors of the room. Does this Spark an idea?

Drama

A dramatic bed adds whimsy, drama and a lightness to a bedroom.

Metal is easy to bend. Metal beds often have interesting shapes, curves and contours that add drama and movement to the bed. By looking for unusual metal beds with lots of features and curves, a homeowner can add drama without a need for bright or shocking colors. A dramatic bed can still look simple and understated, which is exactly the type of contrast that makes the room feel exciting instead of dated.

Simplicity

Strong simple lines always look balanced and appropriate.

Metal beds tend to be inexpensive and easy to find. Look for good structural lines. It isn't important if the bed is straight or if the frame is rusted. If the lines are good, it's not hard to straighten out the metal, blast the frame and paint the bed in the colors that suit your room. Look past minor defects. Try to find solid metal rather than thin-walled or pot metal, as solid metal will refinish with better results. Look for beds in standard mattress sizes.

Modifying a Bed

Canopy beds bring the eye upward and add romance to the decor.

Metal beds are easy to modify. If you find an older metal frame in the size and shape that works for your room, consider adding a canopy. Most towns have a metal shop where you can have the bed frame modified to include a decorative canopy and top knot. The workers will usually be happy to blast and paint the entire frame during the modification, giving you a special, customized finished piece. Make sure the bed comes apart so you can install it in the room.

New and Refurbished

Brass beds create a strong focal point and can be used to add drama to a bedroom.

Well-made brass beds are sold new and refurbished. Add a brass bed to a shabby chic bedroom by making the bed a focal point so the brass becomes a piece of art. Soften the room by using tone-on-tone painted wood furniture and an eclectic mixture of linens. This allows the bed to stand out as a statement piece. Use a soft pastel color on the walls to add contrast if you decide to use all-white linens.

Weld Wrought Iron

Weld Wrought Iron

Wrought iron welding is used in projects such as building fences, gates and ornamental garden art. Wrought iron projects are normally inexpensive and easy to accomplish, and after a good coat of paint they last a long time. In most cases, wrought iron is welded with a MIG wire feed process, which makes quick work of larger projects. While it can be done with a stick welder, wire feed is much easier and cheaper in the long run. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Clean the wrought iron well. If the iron is new, it will be coated with a thin layer of oil to prevent rust from setting in before the iron is used. The oil must be removed prior to welding and painting. Alcohol and a lint-free cloth or rag makes short work of the cleaning process. Remember to only clean the iron you intend to use, because oxidation can occur in a matter of hours if left untreated.

2. Cut the wrought iron carefully. One of the most important things to consider when preparing to weld wrought iron is that it is cut correctly. Even the slightest angle on tubing that is meant to be completely straight and flush can throw things out of alignment. If you have access to a chop saw, it is recommended to cut the steel in bulk so that it all ends up at exactly the same length and with the same angles. If not, measure very carefully and cut precisely so that you achieve the desired outcome. Also, it is better to cut too long than too short, so always err with a long cut to be safe.

3. Set the welder. Inside the door of the welder there is a chart that will tell you how hot to set the welder for each thickness of metal. Use that as a start point, and then fine-tune if necessary once you begin welding. It is better to weld too cool than too hot, because if you burn through the wrought iron you can create a mess. Start cool and gradually turn up the heat for better penetration.

4. Place the ground clamp close to the work and weld the iron. The welder will produce the cleanest and strongest arcs if the ground clamp is placed near the weld. If the wrought iron project is a big one, it is okay to keep moving the clamp along with the welder to ensure quality work. Keep the tip of the MIG gun about a quarter-inch away from the surface of the wrought iron and move slowly for best penetration. It is a good idea to prime and paint the materials as soon as possible after welding to prevent rust.

Clean Dish Racks

Clean Dish Racks

After taking the time to hand wash dishes, you want to ensure you are placing them on a clean dish rack for drying. Due to the water leaking from the dishes, dish racks are an optimal breeding ground for mold and mildew. Weekly cleaning can help prevent it from forming. If it does form, ensure that you disinfect the dish rack and kill all mold and mildew. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

General Cleaning

1. Fill a sink with water as hot as you can stand and add a squirt of liquid dish soap.

2. Add the dish rack to the soapy water. Allow it to soak for a couple of minutes.

3. Lift the dish rack so it is slightly above the soapy water. Dip a sponge in the water and rub on the rack for cleaning.

4. Drain the water from the sink. Rinse the dish rack under cool running water to remove soap residue.

5. Dry the rack with a towel. This prevents the growth and spread of mold and mildew.

Remove Mold and Mildew

6. Fill your sink with warm water. Add 1/4 cup household bleach for every gallon of water.

7. Submerge the dish rack in the bleach and water. Allow the rack to soak for twenty minutes.

8. Use a soft cloth to wipe down the rack and remove any remaining mold and mildew.

9. Drain the water from the sink. Rinse the dish rack under cool, running water.

10. Use a towel to dry the dish rack.

Clean Cast Iron Furniture

Cast iron furniture is expensive in comparison to aluminum or plastic models, as cast iron furniture lasts much longer. It also is extremely heavy. Most cast iron furniture pieces are used on patios since they cannot blow over in heavy windstorms. Proper cleaning will help these pieces retain their durability and prevent rust, which can easily spread once is has taken hold. Cleaning cast iron furniture takes very little time and does not require expensive materials. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Routine Cleaning

1. Mix a solution containing 1/4 cup of mild detergent with 1 gallon of lukewarm water in a plastic cleaning bucket. Swish the solution with your hands to mix it thoroughly. Dampen a cleaning sponge in the cleaning solution and shake out the excess water.

2. Wipe down the piece beginning at the top and working toward the bottom. Use an up and down motion to get in crevices and intricate detailing. Wet the sponge as needed to keep it moist but not dripping.

3. Rinse the piece with a second bucket of cool, clear water. Work from the top of the furniture piece to the bottom. Use a clean sponge that is very wet to make sure all the cleaning solution is wiped away from the piece.

4. Dry your cast iron furniture with a soft, lint-free cloth or towel. Turn the towel over once it begins to get a little wet so you are constantly drying with a dry section. Dry the underside of the piece of furniture as well as any standing water on the ground around your item.

Maintenance and Care

5. Inspect your cast iron furniture for signs of rust, especially if it is being used outdoors. Mark any areas you find with a piece of colored chalk.

6. Use a heavy grit sandpaper to sand away the rust stains you had marked with chalk. Use a wire brush to reach rust in tight areas. Brush away residue from sanding and scraping with a feather duster.

7. Use touch-up paint to cover the sanded areas. Apply the paint with a detail paintbrush starting at the center of the bare area and feathering the paint out to the edges. Allow this paint to dry for four to six hours and apply a second coat.

8. Wax the furniture after all the rust spots have been covered with paint. Place a thick glob of car wax onto a soft applicator pad. Grasp the pad at the back by making a cupping shape with your hand.

9. Apply the wax to the furniture by moving the pad in a circular motion. Add more wax to the pad as needed. Continue until the entire piece is covered with wax, and then allow it to dry to a dull haze.

10. Buff the wax with a soft cloth to remove the haze. Turn the cloth as you buff so that you are constantly using a clean section. Rub until the haze has completely disappeared.

Make Plastic Look Like Metal

Learning make plastic look like metal for your next art project is not very hard, just time consuming. There are few steps involved, depending on if you want a silver or steel finish (Section 1) or a gold look (Section 2) to your piece. Drying times to all paints vary and also depend on the climate you are working in, so start this part of your project ahead of others to allow for extra drying time if needed.

Instructions

Silver or Steel Finish

1. Sand your plastic piece in order to create a good surface for the paint to stick to. If you want a silver look for your art project, take your sandpaper and work it up and down in the same direction around the whole piece. This makes small, vertical scuff marks that mimic the the lines found in real silver. For a smooth, steel finish, work your sandpaper in a small circle pattern to minimize any visible scratches or marks. Make sure that you sand the entire surface or the paint may come out uneven.

2. Spread newspaper down in a well ventilated area. Cover the entire piece with gray primer spray paint. Work in small layers, using short, even strokes. While painting, start your spray a little off one side of the piece, and don't stop the spray until after you have sprayed a little off the other side onto the newspaper. This prevents thicker areas or drops of paint ruining your piece when learning make plastic look like metal for your next art project.

3. Let the primer coat dry throughly before lightly spot sanding any drops or raised areas of primer paint.

4. Spray the entire piece with your can of silver or steel spray paint. Like you did with the primer, work in small, short strokes making sure to coat the entire surface by starting the spray before it hits the edge of the piece and not letting go of the button until it over-sprays onto the newspaper on the other side. This helps to ensure even coverage. Use as many coats as needed to achieve your desired results.

Gold Finish

5. Sand the entire surface of your plastic piece. This helps create a good surface for the paint to stick to. If you'd like a natural gold look, take your sandpaper and work it up and down in the same direction to create small vertical scuff marks. This mimics the the lines found in items such as gold bars. For a smooth gold finish, work your sandpaper in small circles. This helps to minimize any marks that will be seen through your coats of paint. Either way, make sure you sand the entire surface area so that your paint sticks evenly.

6. Spread your newspaper to protect any adjacent area from over-spray. Working in a well ventilated area, use a tan primer spray paint over the entire piece. Spray in short, even bursts, starting the spray on the newspaper on one side of your piece, over the surface of it and to just over the other side. Doing it this way prevents accidentally leaving thicker areas of paint on the edges. Spraying in thinner layers allow you to put more on if needed.

7. Let this coat of primer throughly dry before taking your sandpaper and lightly going over the surface where there are any drops of raised paint or any other spots that need spot sanding.

8. Spray over the surface with your can of gold spray paint. Like you did with the primer, work in small short strokes making sure to coat the entire surface from side to side, over-spraying on both to prevent thick paint drops. Ensuring even coverage is what makes learning make plastic look like metal for your next art project successful.

Refinish An Iron Planter

This is a classic example of an iron planter in need of some TLC.

An iron planter is a vessel that provides a pot of soil to contain a plant so it can blossom. Aesthetically, it's a decorative accessory for indoors or outdoors that can extend a real presence into a room, becoming an eye-catching focal point like a couch or a large mirror. Iron planters can bear a range of unique carvings or designs--from lion's heads to intricate scrolls. If you've come across an old, rusty iron planter, there's absolutely no reason why you can't restore it to its former glory. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Combine 1/4 cup of trisodium phosphate with 1 gallon of warm water in a bucket. Dip a sponge in the mixture and wring it out. Wipe down the iron planter vigorously, removing built-up grime.

2. Scrub the iron planter with a wire brush energetically while it's still wet to remove some of the surface layer of rust.

3. Attach a piece of 80-grit sandpaper to an electric sander and run the sander over the surface area of the iron planter. Repeat with 100-grit sandpaper, then 220-grit sandpaper.

4. Wipe off all the dust from sanding, using the tack cloth. Dip a 3-inch nylon brush in anti-rust primer for metals and coat the iron with a single coat of primer. Allow to dry overnight.

5. Coat the iron planter with two coats of anti-rust paint. Allow 12 hours of drying time between each coat.

Styles For Double Beds

Platform beds are simplistic in design.

There are many different bed styles available. If you're shopping for a bed, finding out about these styles can give you a good idea of the sort of bed you would like. Double-bed styles include divan, canopy, sleigh and platform. Does this Spark an idea?

Divan Beds

The term divan beds applies to two types of beds. The first, viewed as the traditional style, is referred to as a sofa bed. It serves as a sofa in the daytime, but can be used as a bed at night. The other meaning relates to a bed with storage. Original divan beds once had storage space, in the form of drawers built in to the bed's frame. These drawers are suitable for towels and bed sheets.

Sleigh Beds

Sleigh beds' headboard and footboard make them look like old-fashioned horse-drawn sleighs. The headboard of sleigh beds is mostly larger than the footboard. Both curve outward toward the top. The term sleigh bed is used on a stylistic basis, but the beds can be made of different woods, such as mahogany, as well as metal or upholstered leather.

Canopy Beds

Canopy beds are large, four-poster beds, designed to support a curtain-like canopy that hangs down from the top of the frame. These beds, made of wrought iron to wood, come in traditional or contemporary styles. Traditional canopy beds are ornate, reflecting a Victorian sense of design, and contemporary ones, which present sleek, minimalistic design.

Platform Beds

Platform beds are defined by a platform that supports the mattress with no underlying box springs. The platform is made of wooden slats or panels that support the mattress. The simplistic design of these beds means you can find platform beds with different stylistic features. They even come in very low and compact models. Some platform beds accommodate under-bed storage.

Decorate For A Tuscan Holiday

Decorate for a Tuscan holiday.

Tuscany is known for its beauty, history and culture and the Tuscan people are known to be warm and welcoming. Most Tuscan holidays and celebrations occur in the summer and fall and are based around wines, truffles, olive oil and chestnuts. When decorating for a Tuscan holiday, it is important to utilize some of the elements evocative of Tuscany.

Instructions

1. Find copper pots at your local stores or yard sales. People who live in Tuscany often decorate their homes with large copper pots. Place them around your house--on the dining table, counters and side tables.

2. Fill the copper pots with artificial vines or other greenery. Grape vines grow in Tuscany, so they are often used for decoration in celebrations and holidays. Clusters of artificial grapes can add to the effect.

3. Fill in the corners of your home with topiary trees and plants. Tuscany is known for its green trees and shrubs, so placing them in your house will help add to the Tuscan feel.

4. Use tablecloths, napkins, dishware and any other accessories in deep red and orange colors. These colors are very common in Tuscan celebrations.

5. Search for old iron decorations. Tuscany is known for its use of iron in gates, archways, door knobs and other decorations. Items such as wrought-iron candlesticks will be the perfect blend with the copper pots, red and orange hues and plants for a Tuscan holiday theme.

Value Antique Teapots

To value an antique of any kind, you must first assess its condition. You should expect to see some wear and tear, but the condition of the item should also show evidence of quality; an antique of value was often a quality piece to begin with. That said, let’s take a look at value a specific item, the antique teapot.Though the Mayans used something like a teapot 2600 years ago, it’s unlikely you’ll find one of these while scouring the flea markets. The Chinese were using teapots in the 10th century, but again, it’s unlikely any of these are lying about in anyone’s basement. Should you come across an antique teapot, it’s very likely from Europe or North America. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Take a look at the condition of the teapot. If it is ceramic or porcelain, are there cracks, or crackling on the surface? If it is made of silver, are there worn spots? Take a look inside. Is there discoloration from years of steeping tea? Does the handle show wear from years of handling? You should see these signs of wear. A teapot in perfect condition is unlikely to be old.

2. Turn the pot over. Are there markings on the bottom? Whatever the material, those markings will aid you in determining the manufacturer of the teapot and possibly the year it was made. You will need reference books to decipher the markings. More on this in step 5.

3. Take a look at the overall shape of the teapot. In the eighteenth century the teapot went through some changes. According to Ralph and Terry Kovel, in their 1981 edition of “Know Your Antiques,” the round shape we see today was popular from 1730 through 1760, though the pear shape was popular for a brief time in 1730. The inverted pear shape was used from 1750 through 1755 and from 1790 through 1810 the sides of the pot were straight. From 1810 on through to 1835, the sides widened and grew rounder. Most teapots from the early 19th century on continue to use the rounder shape seen today. But do not think that because a teapot has straight sides, it must be an antique. To this day, teapots come in a variety of shapes. The more interesting or unusual the shape, the more collectible the piece may be. Desirability is an important factor in determining value.

4. Look inside the pot, to the holes that lead to the spout. If there are only three or four holes, it could indicate the pot is from the eighteenth century. The holes should look uneven; if they are perfectly round the teapot is more likely to be twentieth-century. Look at the lid of the teapot. How well does it fit onto the body? Does there seem to be wearing from years of use? If the glaze on the lip of the lid of a porcelain or ceramic pot is still perfect, it’s unlikely the pot is very old.

5. Let’s turn again to the markings on the bottom of the teapot. For both pottery and silver, as well as for pewter, the markings will indicate who made the teapot, and what year it was made. Deciphering these marks requires some research. You should have in your library at least one book that lists pottery marks and one book that lists silver marks. It’s impossible to memorize them all, so rely on research to determine this important factor.

6. The actual value of the teapot will depend first on condition. If it is in good condition with the expected wear, the value will be higher. The shape of the teapot will also indicate value. An unusual shape can create desirability, which increases value. But shape also aids in determining age. If you believe you have a Georgian silver teapot, for example, the shape needs to be right. Finally, the markings will aid in evaluating your teapot. Manufacturers changed the markings periodically, and this will indicate the year. The style of the teapot should correspond with the year.

7. Condition, shape and desirability, and verification through markings will provide you with a set of factors to determine the value of your teapot. If you have a documented history of the teapot, or a provenance, this will add value. Most price guides use the manufacturer to index the guide. Look up the manufacturer in a current price guide and you should be able to see a current value listed. However, this value is based on the item being authentic and in good condition, and is only a general guide as to the monetary value.

Thermal Properties Of Cast Iron

Cast iron has long served as a material for cookware.

Cast iron is used in a range of applications, from durable cookware to architectural elements to automotive components. Among the benefits of cast iron, particularly when used in cooking, are its favorable thermal properties. The thermal properties of cast iron allow it to evenly distribute and retain heat over a long period of time, making it a popular option for frying pans and stock pots. Its high melting point makes it useful for more extreme industrial conditions. Does this Spark an idea?

Thermal Conductivity

Thermal conductivity refers to the ability of a material to transfer heat energy. A material that has high thermal conductivity will increase in temperature over a large area in relatively little time. The thermal conductivity of cast iron is 27 to 46 British thermal units (or BTUs) per hour-feet-degrees Fahrenheit. One British thermal unit is equivalent to the heat necessary to raise 1 pound of water by 1 degree Fahrenheit. In other words, the cast iron transfers between 27 and 46 BTU of heat over 1 foot in one hour. By comparison, aluminum has a conductivity of 118 Btu/hr-ft-F; copper has a conductivity of 223 Btu/hr-ft-F.

Heat Capacity

Cast iron's high heat capacity means that it can maintain a relatively high heat, evenly and steadily over time. In kitchen applications, this means that pouring a large quantity of cool liquid into a cast iron pot won't change the pot's temperature too quickly. In addition, when searing a piece of meat on a cast iron pan, you'll find even browning, as the heat is evenly distributed around the pan's surface. Heat capacity is measured in terms of the energy necessary to transmit heat throughout a given mass of material. Cast iron's specific heat capacity is 0.00013 Btu/lbs-F, slightly lower than that of cast steel. When analyzed for its use in industrial or construction purposes, cast iron's heat capacity is relatively low, compared with reinforced concrete, with a heat capacity of 0.0002 Btu/lbs-F, or silica fire bricks, with a heat capacity of 0.00024.

Melting Point

The melting point of cast iron averages 2,150 to 2,360 degrees Fahrenheit. The melting point, itself, rarely comes into relevance under general circumstances. It is used, however, to determine some of the metal's other thermal properties, such as its heat storage capacity, a reflection of the material's melting point, density and heat capacity. Compared with aluminum's melting point, of 1,220 degrees Fahrenheit, or copper, which melts at 1,983 degrees Fahrenheit, cast iron melts at an extremely high temperature.

Make A Wood Octagon Pedestal

You can use pedestals to display a variety of items.

Pedestals have a variety of uses, although they are most often for displaying items. They can also serve as a base for a table or as supports for a larger structure. The octagon shape gives the pedestal strength and rigidity, which makes it sturdy and able to hold heavier items. While you can make these pedestals in any height and diameter, this project focuses on a pedestal that is 8 inches in diameter and 26 inches tall.

Instructions

1. Measure eight 3 5/16-by-24-inch rectangles onto a sheet of plywood. Cut them out with a circular saw.

2. Set the blade of the table saw at a 22 1/2-degree angle. Carefully line up the long side of one of the previously cut pieces so that only the top edge of the plywood gets cut away. Cut both long edges on all eight sections this way.

3. Drill pilot holes every 4 inches on four of the octagon pieces.

4. Lay a bead of glue on two sections, one with pilot holes and one without, on one long edge of either piece. Line up the two sections and hammer in finish nails through the pilot holes. Repeat this procedure on the other sections. You will end up with four pieces.

5. Glue and hammer the four sections together, as you did in the previous step.

6. Center a 12-inch wood circle on top of the pedestal. Attach it with wood screws. Turn the pedestal over and repeat this process.

7. Lay a 10-inch circle on top of the pedestal, centered on the 12-inch circle. Attach the two circles together using wood screws. Use a screw that is just long enough to bite into the larger circle. Repeat this process with the other 10-inch circle and other end of the pedestal.

8. Fill in the seams of the octagon and nail holes and cover the screw heads with wood putty. To get a flat finish, use a putty knife. Let the putty dry according to the manufacturer's directions. If needed, gently sand excess putty away when it is dry.

9. Varnish the pedestal. Use as many coasts as needed to achieve the desired finish. Let dry completely before using.

Cook With A Dutch Oven On Wood Stoves

Indoor wood cook stoves revolutionized the way food was prepared. No longer did the home cook have to cook outdoors over a fire or in the fireplace hearth; the wood cook stove gave them control over the heat that was needed to cook food. It was only natural that the cast iron cookware used in the hearth, including the Dutch oven, be utilized in wood stove cooking. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Build a hot fire in the firebox of the wood stove. Good candidates for wood would be maple, hickory or oak.

2. Combine the ingredients for your recipe in the Dutch oven.

3. Place the cover on the Dutch oven and set the oven over the largest "eye" plate of the wood stove cooking surface. The "eyes" are the removable iron plates on the top of the wood stove.

4. Continue to add wood to the firebox to keep the level of the heat maintained during the entire cooking time. If you need a lower temperature, say for simmering a sauce or stew, move the Dutch oven to an "eye" that is farther away from the firebox.

5. Cook the recipe, without lifting the lid on the Dutch oven except as directed for stirring, until the food is fully cooked.

Summerhouse Gazebo & Arbor Projects

Add a roof cupola to your gazebo for a decorative touch.

A gazebo is an open post-and-beam building that has five to eight sides and is topped by a peaked roof. Derived from a mock-Latin word meaning "I shall gaze," gazebos originated in the Victorian period. Design elements, just as in your home's interior, can add flavor to your summerhouse gazebo. Arbors can be stand-alone projects, but can also serve a specific function in your landscape. Does this Spark an idea?

Rustic Gazebo

Adirondack chairs are just the right touch for a rustic gazebo.

For the home by a mountain lake or in the middle of farmland, design your gazebo with rustic elements. Roughly-hewn log posts and railings, set under a cedar-shake roof with a natural slate floor, blends into the landscape. Furnish with Adirondack chairs. A wagon wheel chandelier and a few crocks spilling over with annuals finish off this simple and peaceful setting.

Mediterranean Gazebo

Mexican tile on the table chairs or floor adds Spanish flair.

Start with a cobblestone floor and add a Mexican tile dining table and wrought iron chairs. Set in terracotta stepping stones as a walkway to your Mediterranean summerhouse gazebo. Surround the structure with a wrought iron railing and add window boxes of the same material, planted with bougainvillea or bright red geraniums to finish off this building with a Spanish flair.

Tropical Gazebo

Palm leaves are most commonly used to craft a palapa.

Add a thatched roof in the style of a palapa, or Caribbean umbrella, on top of a bamboo post and beam structure. Build in a tiki bar with hanging paper lanterns and a woven ceiling fan to bring a tropical feel to your backyard landscape. Surround the gazebo with a garden of broken shells, hibiscus and beach grasses. Roughly hewn bar stools and a few shells gives you the next best thing to a trip to the Bahamas.

Swing Arbor

Porch swings are a great way to relax.

Build a white-painted wooden arbor and add simple scroll work for a taste of the Victorian in your yard. Train grapes, clematis or wisteria to grow and intertwine, providing shade and visual interest to your arbor. Hang a porch swing from the arbor and set it at the end of a walkway to make it a special destination your guests will want to visit.

Covered Walkway Arbor

A wisteria structure must be strong to hold this sturdy plant.

Bring a long, boring walkway out of the mundane by building a covered arbor the entire length of the walk. Train grapevines, wisteria, honeysuckle or English ivy to provide shade on a hot day. A brick walkway under your feet and a bird feeder or two complete the look.

Rose Arbor

Old-fashioned climbing roses add a delicate touch to an arbor.

Set an arched-top, wooden arbor as a gateway where your rose garden and sidewalk meet. Train climbing roses to grow over the arbor. Keep the rose vines that grow up and out either trimmed back or weave the vines into the structure itself for a neat and full look.

Evening In Paris Theme Party Ideas

Create a Mood

Invitations immediately set the tone for an event, so use a famous symbol of the city, such as the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame or a favorite Parisian landmark for inspiration. Or choose well-known French symbols, such as the Fleur de Lis or the French flag as a motif for the the invitation.

Another idea is to use French postcards or craft invitations made to look like one-way plane tickets to whisk your guests to the City of Lights. You can also play up the city's vibrant history as an arts center and create invitations using images by Paul Cezanne, Edgar Degas, Claude Monet or another favorite artist.

As an extra touch, incorporate easy-to-understand French in the invitation. Start with "bonjour," "salut" or "ciao." Address envelopes with Monsieur/Mademoiselle rather than Mr/Ms. Close with "a bientôt!" which means, "See you soon!"

If you really get into the spirit, you can also ask guests to wear berets, scarves or striped shirts to the party.

Set the Scene

Set a scene inspired by a cafe on one of Paris' grand avenues. Use wrought iron or metal bistro tables and chairs. If that is not possible, cover round tables with red or blue-checked tablecloths. Serve food on paper plates with a French theme, or use the red, white and blue colors from the flag.

Put votive candles and fresh-cut flowers, such as roses, in crystal vases on each table. In general, use red, white, and blue -- the colors of the French flag -- to decorate. A centerpiece with grapes, half of a baguette and a bottle of red wine or Champagne also evokes France. Put small French flags on the tables, or mini-cardboard replicas of the Eiffel Tower.

Set up wheel barrows or wagons to look like carts selling fresh flowers or baguettes. Taller carts can double as a unique food or wine stations.

If you are indoors, you can hang tourist maps of Paris streets or its Metro. To emphasis the city's incredible art, blow up images from renowned artists, and place them on easels. Select music by Edith Piaf, Maurice Chevalier other famous French singers.

For a truly extravagant event, recreate a street scene. Consider hiring a local artist to set up an easel and bring their palette. Or, perhaps a hire a mime to entertain your guests.

Bon Appetit

With some planning, French fare can become the perfect party food. Put together interesting cheese platters with brie, Camembert, chevre (tangy goat's milk cheese) and a strong blue cheese, such as Roquefort. Serve with grapes, olives, sliced apples and baguettes. Crepes served with chocolate or jam filling make great sweet treats. You can also serve crepes will fillers such as chicken, spinach, cheese and mushrooms for a heavier meal option.

Quiches and vegetable tarts are great make-ahead options. Ratatouille, cassoulet, beef Bourguignon and French stews are hearty entrees that serve a crowd. Serve with red wine or sparkling water.

You may want to consider a menu with crepes or souffl , but these might be best left to a caterer. These dishes are labor-intensive and should be made to order.

For dessert, consider clairs, cream puffs, pastries, fruit tarts or sorbets. Satisfy chocolate cravings with chocolate mousse or individual chocolate truffles. Guest with a sweet tooth will be delighted by any of these options. Serve with espresso or Port wine.

French Country Painted Bedroom Furniture Ideas

Decorating a bedroom in the rustic style of the French countryside creates a cozy and restful atmosphere. The French country style features soft shades and a distressed painting technique on the furnishings to create the appearance of a room that is both timeworn and elegant. The furniture for your French country bedroom should be large and solid but less ornate than formal French decorating styles. Does this Spark an idea?

Colors

French country colors are soft and include shades of white, cream and beige as well as other pastels. Natural colors such as soft sky blue or pale green work well in the French country bedroom. In addition to restful colors, furnishings can include hand-painted floral designs to add a splash of color to the pieces. For example, stenciling ivy with delicate flowers across the top of a wardrobe adds color to a distressed white background.

Distressed Paint

Select pieces for the bedroom with a distressed finish for the rustic country look of French country decorating, or use distressing techniques to create the rustic or shabby chic look to the furniture you already have. Distressing furniture gives the pieces an aged and well-worn look that mimics the appearance of an antique from the French countryside.

Wardrobe

The armoire or wardrobe is a staple in the French country bedroom. Painting the piece in a shade of cream or antique white with accent shades in pastel colors can create an interesting place to store clothing, accessories or other items, keeping the bedroom neat and tidy.

Bed

Wrought iron beds are a common choice in a French country bedroom. To create the look of chipped white paint for an antiqued country look, spray multiple coats of white paint over black primer and chip through the layers to reveal the darker base color. Heavy and ornate headboards and footboards can have a rustic country look with distressed white or pastel paint, or select a four-poster bed for a feminine and elegant country appearance.

Install A Hanging Pot Rack

A hanging pot rack can be simple to install.

Professional chefs in kitchens around the world use a hanging pot rack to store and organize their pots and pans A hanging pot rack is a home improvement project someone can take on to not only give a look of elegance and professionalism, but to add extra storage space to any kitchen. With the proper materials and tools--and preparation and careful planning--you can transform the look of your kitchen in one afternoon. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Organization is Key

1. The first step in any job is organization. Lay out orderly all mounting hardware easily identifiable or marked. Set hanging pot rack aside for the time being. Wear safety goggles throughout the job.

2. Clean the area before starting. Take extra care to confirm the area you'll be working not only is clean, but free from any obstacles.

3. Lay drop cloth down over the floor and over counters to catch falling debris from drilling.

Find studs and drill holes

4. Carefully set a ladder underneath where you plan to hang the pot holder. Make sure the ladder is even and steady before climbing.

5. For this step, you will need the stud finder and pencil. Use the stud finder to find the studs in the ceiling, and mark the area where each stud is.

6. Using dimensions from a hanging pot holder, measure and mark each space on the ceiling to determine where to put pilot holes for mounting holes. Carefully climb the ladder and drill each stud you marked, using a drill bit slightly smaller than screw on mounding hardware.

Mount hardware and hang pot holder

7. This step requires the screw-hooks for mounting hardware. Climb the ladder and screw each mounting screw into a drilled hole.

8. Hang the pot holder, using mounting brackets provided with mounting hardware. Once you hang the pot holder, use the level to ensure that each corner aligns correctly as necessary.

9. Ensure that the pot holder hangs securely. Carefully hang pots and pans on the pot holder.

Gangster Theme Party Ideas

Gangster Theme Party Ideas

A gangster theme party idea can be as elaborate and realistic as you want it to be. Of course, without the danger. Although the modern gangster can sometimes be portrayed as glamorous, the 1920s and '30s was arguably the golden age for gangsters. Back then, gangsters disguised danger with the clean-cut class of zoot suits and fedoras. Does this Spark an idea?

Themes

So, you've chosen a gangster theme. Even when you choose a gangster theme, there are various sub themes from which to choose. A few ideas of gangster theme ideas include a speakeasy bar, Bonnie & Clyde, Al Capone, a Clue-style murder mystery, Chicago, 1920s Harlem or Little Italy.

Invitation

Do justice to the era. Send an Art Deco inspired invitation using 1920s and '30s slang. Remember, this was the time of prohibition, when alcohol was illegal, but secretly served at speakeasies. You can include an illegal admission to a speakeasy with a cryptic password on the invitation. State the dress code, so that everyone shows up according to theme. For example, you may want to include a photo of a gangster and/or flapper seamlessly into the design of your invitation.

Costume

Require men to show up as 1920 and '30's gangsters. Provide women with the option to show up as gangsters or flappers. You may even want to go as far as recommending wardrobe ideas within the invitation. Flappers can dress up in flapper dresses, long pearl necklaces, boas, filtered cigarettes and fans. Gangsters can wear zoot suits, white tops with suspenders, fedoras, cigars, and fake guns.

Decoration

Keep the vintage look consistent both outside and inside the party. Find a place to hold your event. Consider cocktail bars, ballrooms, or even your home depending on the size and scope of the party. Decorate with black & white tableware, wine bottles on each table, tons of candles, wrought iron wine holders and candle holders. Depending on the appropriate nature of the event and age group, you can also transform the location into a speakeasy back room with alcohol and gambling. Find recipes that existed during the times, like Mint Juleps and Champagne Punch.

Ambiance

Candles certainly help with mood lighting. Another idea in creating a speakeasy is low lighting and atmospheric smoke with a fog machine. You can even hire a DJ or a band to play rag time or jazz. Get a dance floor. If your party is elaborate, hire a group of costumed dancers. Invite a dance instructor who is an expert of the Charleston, Peabody, Fox Trot or other partnership dances of the time.

Make Furniture Applique Molds

You can capture any or all of the details in these doors using a simple push-mold method.

Sometimes a little detail can make all the difference. In vintage furniture, the carved details are what attract collectors and lovers of craftsmanship. But sometimes an older piece of furniture is missing its furniture applique, or some new reproduction chairs need a little vintage detail. That's when being able to make your own furniture appliques from a mold really works. The process is easy, inexpensive and will give you plenty of opportunities to add decorative details to furniture, walls and mirrors.

Instructions

1. Prepare the furniture applique by cleaning it with a soft paintbrush. Clean dust and debris that might be trapped in the tight spaces of the applique or the details of the reproduced applique will not appear sharp.

2. Prepare polymer clay by working it until it's soft and easy to mold.

3. Roll a ball of polymer clay that is larger than the furniture applique to be copied. The clay ball must be able to cover the entire applique plus have 1 or 2 inches above it when it is pressed into the clay.

4. Before pressing the furniture applique into the polymer clay, dust the clay lightly with baby powder and a soft paintbrush. This will prevent the furniture applique from sticking to the clay.

5. Press the furniture applique firmly into the polymer clay to ensure that all the details are captured by the mold.

6. Pull the clay gently away from the furniture applique without stretching it. Check the mold to be sure that all the details of the applique are there.

7. Place the mold on an old cookie sheet and bake in the oven according to the polymer manufacturer's directions.

8. Allow the mold to cool before casting any appliques.

9. Mix Durham's Wood Putty with water according to directions. Pour into the mold. Allow it to set up and dry completely.

10. Carefully remove the furniture applique from the mold and sand any rough spots with fine-gauge sandpaper.

Decorate A Paris Themed Bedroom On A Budget

The secret to turning your bedroom into a chic Parisian retreat is color and accessories, neither of which need to break the bank. Go for black and white---a soft, warm white or ivory---with a few gold accents to convey haute couture. Incorporate architectural details that echo classic design. Accessorize with lace, roses and toile prints---anything with a French accent---to create a bedroom even Audrey Hepburn would love. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Choose a warm tone for the walls. Ivory, beige or a warm tan make wonderful backdrops for a black-and-white color schemes. For a feminine retreat, think pink---pardon moi--- pêche, or rose. Sherwin-Williams makes a warm shade of pale pink called "Romance" that's ideal.

2. Mix and match companion fabrics in black and white. Buy small quantities of a variety of companion fabrics online or from the remnant table. "Toile" is a French word that denotes fabrics with an all-over pastoral print. Black-and-ivory striped ticking or checks, lace, natural linen, or even moiré in solid black or ivory can be mixed together. An ivory matelassé bedspread or coverlet will compliment toile pillow shams.

3. If you splurge on anything, make it the bed, the most important feature of any bedroom. Appropriate choices include a delicate wrought-iron or vintage Victorian bed frame with lots of curvy carving. Experts caution never to do more than clean the original surface of a valuable antique. But feel free to paint a reproduction black or white. Alternatively, consider upholstering a headboard cut from plywood with one of your fabric selections. Be sure to saw some curves into the plywood. Finish a padded headboard by adding black gimping or cord.

4. Save by recycling any comfy chair that suits you. As long as the padding is serviceable, you can make it room-ready with a simple slipcover. White duck is so basic that it can be used almost anywhere, but black fabric, or a black-and-white toile print or stripe would work, too.

5. Select a small wrought-iron or wire table---the fancier the better---with a glass top as a bedside table. You might find one minus the glass really cheap. If replacing the glass is too expensive, get plywood cut to fit, Sand it smooth, and coat with several coats of primer to create a smooth surface. Paint it black, or if you feel daring, try a marbling kit. You could also decoupage a collection of black-and-white scenic postcards of Paris or photos from your trip.

6. Accessorize. Find a discarded French-provincial dining chair, paint it, and cover the seat with one of your fabrics to use at your vanity or when dressing. Look for black wire or cast metal lamp bases at a discount store, and top with black or ivory polyester shades to brighten your bedside table and vanity. Shelf supports of cast iron or corbels allow you to display your treasures. Corbels made of polyurethane start at under $10 and can be used to add architectural interest; some are designed to hold a curtain rod, and others are purely decorative. Some are lightweight enough to be glued on with construction adhesive. Decorate your walls with black-and-white photographic prints of Paris. Add some throw pillows and, perhaps, a pink mohair throw to the bed. Put a pale silk rose in a bud vase on your vanity.

Styles Of Gutters Used On A Frenchstyle House

A modern French-style home

An often overlooked detail, gutters can completely change the look of a house. By using gutters that match the style of your house, you create strong curb appeal while adding value to your home, while the wrong gutter detracts from the exterior. Gutters for a French-style house should match the design and fit with the flared eaves. Does this Spark an idea?

Material

Common aluminum gutters detract from stonework.

The material you choose for your gutter should match the time period, the style and the other materials used for your house. Antique bronze and copper offer a decorative look to most French-style homes, which often have brick and stonework along their roofs and exteriors. These options cost more than common aluminum gutters, but bring up your home's curb appeal immediately.

Downspouts

Choosing custom downspouts can enhance a French-style home.

Inexpensive corrugated aluminum will not look right on a million-dollar home, so why cheapen your French-style home? If your budget only allows for aluminum gutters, opt for smooth downspouts or use a contrasting, higher-end material on the downspouts and hide the actual gutters. Intricate downspouts and rain chains add decorative flourishes that enhance the French-style exterior and are made in a variety of materials.

Style

Half-round gutters complement the flat tile roofs found on many French-style homes, but may not be suitable for your climate. Make sure that the capacity of the gutters can withstand the amount of annual rain fall in your area. A fascia-style gutter hangs like a crown molding and can be worked into your roof's edge detail. Since it is thinner than traditional options, a fascia can be hidden well within the exterior design.

Flourishes

After choosing your gutters and downspouts, you can also add Old World, European-inspired flourishes to your house with ornamental hangers, leader heads (or outlets) and spires. The hangers literally hold your gutter to your house, but can be finished with curls and other design work. A leader head serves as an outlet connecting the gutter to connect a downspout and can add an architectural element to your home. These can be quite ornate and should match your home's molding and roof. A spire is merely a decorative finial placed along your gutter to enhance your roofline. All of these touches can make a necessary gutter an exquisite architectural enhancement to your French-style house.

What Pulls Should I Put On Oak Cabinets

Choosing oak cabinets for a kitchen or bathroom can add great value to your home. Oak is an extremely durable wood that lasts a long time. Oak can also be stained a variety of shades to match any decor. Also, because oak is so versatile, several types and styles of hardware, such as knobs and pulls, can be used to enhance the look of the cabinets. Does this Spark an idea?

Wrought Iron Finish

Wrought iron pulls and hardware give a strikingly modern look on lighter colored oak cabinets. Wrought iron is easily welded and shaped, making it perfect for creating different styles of pulls for your cabinets. Wrought iron has less carbon than steel, giving it a grainy look perfect for vintage cabinets. The contrast between light and dark is a beautiful and unique choice.

Glass and Porcelain Finish

Choosing glass or porcelain hardware finishes for oak cabinets is perfect for a delicate and kitschy look. Although glass or porcelain pulls might not be as popular as brushed nickel or wrought iron, they are as widely available and similar in price.

Shapes and Styles of Pulls

Hardware comes in almost unlimited shapes and styles, and the perfect hardware for your oak cabinets is what best fits your home. Choose from traditional, elegant, ornate, modern or unique. Pulls can be in traditional "knob" shape, or flat and compact. Pulls can also be in almost any shape you desire, such as swirls, leaves or flowers. About Metal Furniture

About Metal Furniture

Metal furniture is a popular choice of furnishings, especially used outdoors for decks and patios. However, metal furniture can also be used indoors, such as brass beds, brass tables, iron bakers racks and metal curio cabinets. Besides being sturdy, metal furniture is attractive, giving a contemporary look to your home. To make it stand out, all it takes is a good polishing to give it added charm and character. Does this Spark an idea?

Benefits

Durability is the main advantage of metal furniture. For example, not many types of non-metal furniture can remain outside during winter and still look good when spring arrives. If cared for properly, metal furniture can last up to 30 years. Because most metal furniture is treated for rust and heat resistance, it doesn't need much maintenance.

Types of Metals

Usually metal furniture is made from either steel or aluminum. To tell aluminum from steel, place a magnet on a metal surface and if it is steel it will stick. Steel furniture is typically pricier when it's used as furniture, with the price varying according to the type of metal and thickness. However, it's hard to identify it after a finish is applied. Steel has low, medium or high carbon, with most metal furniture being made with low carbon because it's cheaper than a higher grade of carbon. Stainless steel is good for low maintenance. Made of an alloy of carbon, iron and other metals, its main reason for its strength is because of chromium, which protects from rust and corrosion because of its thin film of oxide on the surface. Wrought iron is good for garden furniture, providing a classic look. However, it's heavy, which is a challenge, but appreciated on windy days. It needs much care, though, and can easily rust and corrode if not waterproofed. Aluminum is more common than steel furniture, mostly because it doesn't rust, although it oxidizes, turning into a chalky white. It's also lighter than steel, making it more desirable. Caste and heavy tube aluminum give better quality. Aluminum has to be thicker than steel if it is to have as much strength. Tubular aluminum is flexible and hollowing, besides less sturdy. However, its lightness makes for an ideal poolside furniture and is mainly used for benches, folding chairs and swing sets.

Types of Finishes

Choosing the right finish metal furniture is important because of its durability. Some of the most common ones include chrome plating, plastic, painted, brass and anodized finishes. Chrome plating, although durable, is thin and if damaged where it's exposed to air, scratches can rust. Plastic-coated finishes are synthetically made and good as they prevent rusting or the metal changing color from air exposure. Although they're as strong as paint finishes, they don't hold up as well as electroplated finishes. Paint finishes are for both steel and aluminum furniture, although it easily scratches and rusts. Brass plating, which is an electroplated finish, is applied in a bath and is durable. Solid brass is both pricey and rare. To decide if a finish is solid brass put a magnet on the furniture and if it clings, it's solid brass. Coat it with a clear plastic finish. Anodized finishes are used on aluminum furniture because aluminum oxidizes. Available in colored or clear, anodized finishes are hard-to-durable because it's difficult to scratch and it will wear through because it's thin.

Considerations

When selecting metal furniture, consider coat and finish, ensuring the surface is powder coated--which doesn't need maintenance--and the finish isn't just painted onto the furniture but baked into the metal. Also, consider your climate. For example, if you live in a rainy area, you'll want furniture with heavy waterproofing and light enough to carry indoors. For hot climates, consider that aluminum retains heat, so you can't use it until it cools down.

Misconceptions

Often people consider metal furniture with being uncomfortable, as images of "metal" conjure up cold, hard-backed chairs as well as cold, shiny surfaces. However, it's easy to add cushions and upholstery to make the furniture comfy, as well as attractive. Also, adding some simple curves also adds to comfort as many types of metal furniture manufacturers have done.

Warning

If you're not using your metal furniture for a long period of time, cover it with plastic or vinyl sheets for protection. Also, be quick to repair any scratches or chips before they start to rust.

Mount Metal Wall Art

Weigh yourself then weigh yourself holding the art, to know its weight.

If you have metal wall art, you know that it can be very heavy, not to mention tricky to mount. When you plan to mount metal wall art you'll need to think about a few things, including the type of walls you have and what type of mounts are on the back of the art already, if any. Choose high-quality materials to ensure that any heavy metal wall art will not fall and damage your floors or anything else around them. Replace the hardware on the back of the art if it looks cheap. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Weigh the piece of metal wall art that you plan to hang on the wall, especially if it is an extremely heavy piece. Purchase a mounting kit designed to hold up to twice the weigh of your wall art.

2. Read through the manufacturer's instructions for attaching the mounting kit to the back of the wall art, as instructions may vary.

3. Apply the appropriate pieces of the mounting kit to the back of the wall art. Make sure to attach the mounts at the strongest places on the art and where it will touch the wall, depending on the shape of the art.

4. Use a stud finder to find the studs in the wall and mark them with a pencil. Hang heavy metal wall art on the studs to make sure it is very secure.

5. Screw the mounting pieces to the wall as instructed by the manufacturers. Use special anchors called molly or toggle bolts for extra heavy objects, if necessary, to make sure the wall art will not pull out chunks of your wall, especially if they are plaster or drywall.

6. Mount the wall art once you install the hangers on the wall.

"Development of innovative techniques, leading to ever higher quality goods" forms the corporate policy. Its casters, produced in a lubricated state, meet specifications designed to ensure safety and durability over time.

Wheel

The wheels for the Series 220 casters are made in three different diameters: 50, 65 and 75 millimeters (mm), or 1.96, 2.56 and 2.95 inches. Each diameter wheel has several wheel types, such as rubber, cast iron, hard rubber and polyurethane, all of which are plain bearing.

Loading Capacity

Defined as a weight the caster could carry easily and safely over a long period of time, load capacity specifications are listed for each diameter and type of wheel in the 220 series. Hammer suggests that the load capacity not be exceeded. The load capacity for each 50 mm wheel follows: rubber, 30 kilograms (kg); cast iron (two different wheels), 38 and 40 kg; hard rubber, 30 kg and polyurethane, 38 kg. For the 65 mm wheels rubber rates 40 kg, cast iron 60 and 55 kg, hard rubber 40 kg and polyurethane 55 kg. The larger 75 mm wheel's load capacity for rubber is 50 kg, for the two cast iron wheels 70 kg and 65 kg, the hard rubber 50 kg and the polyurethane 65 kg.

Yielding Load

The maximum load one caster can sustain is known as the yielding load with Hammer recommending the caster not to be subjected to that load, at least in the long term. For each of the three diameter wheels and the five types of wheels, the load in kg varies, ranging from a low of 120 kg for the 50 mm wheel in rubber and hard rubber to 280 kg for a 75 mm cast iron wheel.

Compare Vinyl Fences

Vinyl fences are a popular alternative to wooden fences.

Vinyl fences are a popular choice for today's homes because, unlike wooden fences, they are maintenance-free and do not deteriorate over time. There are many choices for vinyl fences, so it is best to consider your needs when choosing a vinyl fence. Does this Spark an idea?

Privacy Vinyl Fences

Privacy vinyl fences, which are typically six to eight feet high, are available in a wide array of designs and generally are chosen to ensure privacy for your outdoor living spaces. Privacy vinyl fences can be of the classic design with little or no decorative accents, or they may be accented with picket fencing, scalloped picket fencing, lattice or closed picket fencing.

Yard Vinyl Fences

Choosing a vinyl fence for your yard or property often depends on several factors, including security, safety and design. You may choose picket fencing, ranch rail fencing or crossbuck ranch rail fencing for your yard. Each type of yard fencing also is available in a number of design styles.

Pool Vinyl Fences

Many homeowners choose vinyl fencing for their pool area because it provides protection and does not deteriorate from the water or pool chemicals. Pool vinyl fencing generally is about five feet tall and features rails that are close enough together to prevent entrance into the pool area.

Kitchen & Dining Room Design Ideas

Several design options are available for kitchens and dining rooms.

Kitchens and dining rooms go hand in hand. One room is used for the preparation of food, and the other is used for dining. These rooms are warm and comfortable places that invite family and friends to come in and stay awhile, while reflecting your personal style. When decorating these spaces, consider several design options to help you achieve a friendly atmosphere that suits your taste. Does this Spark an idea?

Rustic Charm

Characterized by natural materials and warm colors, a rustic-style kitchen or dining room sends a welcoming message. Use warm red, yellow or peach for the wall color. Add natural elements to the walls with natural wood chair rails or brick accents. Use tin tiles to cover the ceilings. Furniture made of reclaimed wood is ideal to use with this style; for example, turn an old barn door into a table top or transform old wine barrels into countertops. Accessorize these spaces with brass and terracotta bowls, wicker baskets and wrought iron candle sticks or towel holders. A brightly colored braided throw rug ties the floor into the space.

Cool Contemporary

If you like modern and sophisticated design, a contemporary kitchen or dining room is the right option for you. The style is based on a minimalist look--less is more. Choose a neutral color for the walls, such as stark white, soft gray or taupe. In the kitchen, black granite countertops work for this design style. Use a glass-top table coupled with chairs made of dark wood topped with microfiber cushions in the dining room. Cover the windows with floor-to-ceiling draperies made of crushed velvet or satin. Bring color into the space with accessories, but don't go overboard. Set the table with brightly colored cups and plates. A large, geometric print painting hung on a wall is an eye-catching feature. Fill a tall floor vase with bright-colored feathers.

Arts and Crafts

Arts and crafts decorating style is comprised of ornate details. Wood, stained glass, metals and painted tiles are all used in arts and crafts style. Paint the top half of the walls a rose color or hunter green, and line the bottom half of the walls with carved wood panels. Line your backsplash with painted mosaic tiles. Bring metals into the space with stainless steel or brushed copper--sinks, light fixtures and even salt and pepper shakers are often made of these metals. Use oversized wood furniture with ornate carved details in these spaces.

English Country Garden Landscaping Ideas

An English country garden is comprised of a variety of flowers and colors.

English country gardens evoke a feeling of romance and tranquility. They burst with drifts of multi-colored blooms and the scent of roses floats on the breeze. Informal seating areas form outdoor rooms. But, while English country gardens may look somewhat wild and haphazard, they require planning and maintenance to preserve their beauty. Does this Spark an idea?

Structures

Gazebos shaded by trailing vines offer a quiet, romantic setting to enjoy your quiet, colorful country garden. A rustic pergola constructed of grape vines and furnished with comfortable lounge chairs becomes an open air room. Birdhouses scattered across the landscape assure you of cheerful birdsong as you enjoy working in the garden.

Pathways

In an English country garden the paths meander from one place to the next, sometimes widening into small seating areas where you can observe wild life and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature while surrounded by a variety of flowers, herbs, trees and bushes. Slate and brick are two popular choices for these paths but gravel, river rock or wood chips work, too.

Furniture

Put a wrought iron bistro table with matching chairs in one of the small patios formed by the widening paths. It is the perfect place for morning coffee or a light lunch. Furniture crafted from grapevines lends a graceful touch to the seating area in a pergola. Furnish a gazebo with whitewashed or green wicker furniture. Situate gracefully curved concrete benches in a circle surrounding a water fountain or coy pond.

Plantings

Strive for a variety of plants in your garden. Include both annuals and perennials. Incorporate herbs and vegetables. Plant fruit trees both for their blossoms and their bounty. Choose a soft palette highlighted with brightly colored plantings scattered throughout.

English country gardens appear informal, even wild, but they are actually quite well planned. Plant placement is important. Border the paths with shorter plants like marigolds, impatience, and pansies and ground covers like creeping rosemary and English ivy. Behind them plant pockets of taller plants like a variety of lilies, daisies, lupine and tulips. Back these with flowering bushes like lilacs, hydrangeas, peonies and rhododendron. Add pockets of shrubbery for depth and greenery. Boxwood and holly work well for this.

Herbs add interest, color and scent as well as practicality. Plant basil, parsley and rosemary by your back door for everyday use. Border the gazebo with lavender and scented thyme and enjoy their fragrance.

Vegetables are often part of an English country garden. Separate them from the rest of the landscape with a white picket fence or spread them out among the other plantings. Cucumbers and zucchinis can trail along a slate pathway backed by staked tomato plants standing tall. Border a vegetable garden with cosmos, Shasta daisies and zinnias for cutting.

Climbing plants are integral to an English garden. Climbing roses, trumpet vines, and wisteria are popular choices. They create shade when allowed to trail over pergolas. Use climbing plants to disguise eyesores like chain link fences. Create a romantic entrance for your garden by installing an archway covered in climbing roses.

Calculate The Length Of An Arch For A Gate

An arched gate provides an entrance to a garden or yard.

Garden gates do not last forever. If your metal gate is rusted or your wood gate has worn down, you may want to replace it. Alternately, you might need a gate for an entrance to a new home garden. You can peruse your local home goods warehouse for ideas. Though a store clerk can tell you the height and width of potential gates, the arch length is not always available in the product information. It would take a complicated trigonometric calculation to figure out the length of the arch through mathematics. Your best bet is to measure it yourself. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Ask a store clerk to help you measure the length of an arch for a gate.

2. Position the starting point of your tape measure at one end of the arch.

3. Instruct the store clerk to press her finger down on the end of the tape measure to hold it in place.

4. Pull the tape measure tautly over the edge of the arch until it reaches the other end.

5. Read the measurement at your end of the arch to the closest 1/8 inch.

Use A Penn Royal Wood Stove

The Penn Royal wood stove is a fireplace insert made for burning wood. It is cast iron and quite heavy, but the weight of the iron holds heat evenly, keeping the room warm. This stove sits in the fireplace with the front almost flush with the front of the fireplace. It has two handles, one for opening the door and the other for opening the ash door. On the ash door are two knobs for controlling the air to the fire. Check with a chimney professional if this is your first time using the stove, to make sure the chimney flue is safe for the insert. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Open the vents at the bottom of the stove by turning the two knobs counterclockwise so that they open and let the maximum amount of air to the fire.

2. Start a small fire to warm the chimney and get the draft flowing. Keep an inch or so of ash in the bottom of the firebox, if there are remaining ashes from the previous fire. Crumple up five or six sheets of newspaper. Stack a dozen or more sticks of dry kindling over the paper, and light the paper. Leave the firebox door slightly open during this phase.

3. Add larger cuts of wood over the burning kindling. Once you see they are burning, slowly close the firebox door, still leaving the vents open at the bottom of the insert. Keep any stored wood at least 36 inches from the front of the stove.

4. Turn on the circulating fan, if you have one, to help spread the heat from the insert to the rest of the house. Wait until the front of the stove is hot to the touch before turning on the fan. You can hear the cast iron click and creak as it heats up.

5. Close the front vents to slow down the airflow if the fire gets too hot. Otherwise, keep the vents open to burn a hot fire and keep your chimney from accumulating creosote.
