Cook On Wood Burning Stoves

Wood burning stoves are much more efficient cookers than you may realize. True they take some getting used to, and you may have to enjoy a few failures before you achieve success, but mastering the art of stove top cooking on a wood stove isn't that far out of reach. Start with the simpler items and get a feel for how you stove works, and you'll find you can cook more than just soup in no time. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Start your fire with well-seasoned wood. Wood should be seasoned-or dried-for at least six months. Hardwoods, such as oak and maple, are typically used, but how dry the wood is will make more of a difference in your cooking than what type it is. Good, dry wood will burn hot, evenly and without much smoke.

2. Allow the fire to burn for at least 45 minutes before you begin cooking either in the oven or on the stove top. Until the fire settles and turns to coals, it won't offer an even enough heat for cooking. Start a pot of water if you want to get something going, or do something simple like reheat soup.

3. Check the temperature of the oven. Some wood stoves that are designed for cooking have a thermometer built into them. If you don't have one, they are worth purchasing since the oven temperature will vary in a wood stove.

4. Get to know which side of the stove is hotter than the other. You'll notice that the side of the oven where the firebox is will be the hottest, since this is where the fire originates. Use this side of the stove for higher heat cooking, such as sauteing or for boiling water, and then move the pan or pot over when you need to simmer or bring a lower heat under the pan.

5. Experiment with the venting system. Levers on the back or side of the stove control the flow of air into the fireplace and will help regulate the heat. Remember that with a wood stove, you can't just turn the flame down on the burner. The heat will rise and fall much more slowly, and you may burn a few things while you get used to it, which is just part of the learning experience.

6. Have proper equipment for cooking on a wood stove. These types of stoves do not have burners, so the entire cooking surface will be hot. Pans that have plastic handles that can't withstand heat will get damaged quickly. Cast iron, ceramic or sturdy Pyrex dishes work very well with these types of stoves.

7. Keep your firebox and stove top clean. Remove ash often as this can lead to creosote buildup and reduce the efficiency of your stove.

Landlord Pool Fence Requirements

Most pools are required to have fences around them.

While requirements vary from place to place, most areas require landlords to have a fence around a pool in a residential yard or apartment complex to protect people or animals from wandering into the pool and possibly injuring themselves or drowning. These pool fence requirements vary in height, structure and entrances, all based upon the size of the pool and the area it is located in.

Type of Materials

While specifics of this regulation vary from municipality to municipality, most fences around pools can be made out of a number of different materials, ranging from wood to wrought iron to cement. These fences just need to be sturdy enough to withstand inclement weather or someone pushing or leaning against them. The materials should not have any foot holds so people will not be able to climb them easily. Fences should be secured in the ground with cement or metal bolts that attach to the ground or the area around the pool, so that the fence cannot be easily knocked down or accidentally fall on someone, creating a situation where the landlord can be sued.

Fence Heights

While these heights vary from area to area, most pool fences must be at least five feet in height and above, so that children who cannot swim or animals cannot climb or jump over these fences easily. This protects against those who cannot swim in the pool from being able to try to swim or from accidentally falling into the pool and drowning. The taller the fence, the better. It will ensure against anyone climbing into the pool and protect you, the landlord, from the possibility of an accident occurring and being sued for it.

Secured Entrances, Easy Exits

Entrances to the pool should be secured with a code or a special device that electronically unlocks the gate when a tenant or someone who has access to the pool swipes a type of access key in front of the gate's entrance. This will keep people who don't have approved access to the pool or who are not tenants from gaining access to the pool, freeing the landlord of liability. However,it should be easy for people to leave the area when there is rain or lightning in the area. These gates should have push bars which allow ease of exit and there should be numerous, easily accessible exits on each side of the pool.

Balcony Furniture Ideas

Chairs are a comfortable way to furnish your balcony.

Balconies come in all different sizes, so there are many different furniture options available to meet various needs. Some pieces of furniture can even double as storage to maximize the amount of space available. No matter what you use your balcony for, there are pieces of furniture to accommodate it. Does this Spark an idea?

Storage

Having storage on your balcony is an important consideration. Take into account what is on the balcony and what you may need to store in that space. Some furniture can double as storage units. For instance, some seats or table tops can be lifted to reveal storage underneath. If you do not have much to store outside, then consider using smaller storage containers that can be hidden behind plants or flowers.

Furniture

Depending on the size of your balcony, you can have many different kinds of furniture. One option for a smaller space is a bistro set. This normally includes two chairs and a small table and can be made of different materials like wrought iron or wood. A bistro set is great for having a cup of coffee in the morning, but it is normally not big enough to eat dinner on. If you have a larger balcony, there are bigger pieces that can allow you to lounge as well. This can include anything from a love seat, to a chaise lounge to a patio table and chairs. These are also made of different materials that can vary depending upon your preferences.

Fences

Another type of decor some people opt for is fencing. If you would like your balcony to be more private, try placing a fence on your balcony. Most balconies have some sort of fence but they can be short and don't provide any privacy. Try placing a bamboo fence inside the fence that is already on the balcony. You can also find fences made of wrought iron that allow you to grow plants on them. Over time, the plants will grow up the sides of the fence, providing more beauty and privacy. While these provide some privacy, they don't totally block your balcony. Keep in mind, however, that using a fence can cause you to obscure your view and ability to see outside of your balcony.

Plants

One way to liven up your balcony is by adding a few potted plants. If you have a small balcony, even one or two plants can make a big difference. A window box or small pots of flowers are also options for decorating the balcony. When deciding which plants to use, take into consideration whether your balcony is shaded or if it receives direct sunlight. If it does receive sunlight, then consider how much light it receives. Some good ideas of plants to use are bonsai or orchids. These are plants that don't take up much space and have very decorative qualities.

Use A Kettle Barbecue

Use a Kettle Barbecue

Kettle grills are great for those holiday weekend barbecues. The difference between the kettle grill and other charcoal barbecues is the round, high lid. The lid has a vent in it that you can open a little or a lot to keep in just the right amount of smoky flavor. It also allows you to use the grill to roast meats inside. Most people who own kettle grills wouldn't use any other type of grill. Try one out for your next barbecue. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Use a Kettle Barbecue

1. Remove the food rack from the grill. Cover the bottom of the grill with charcoal and then put some more on top. The briquettes will take longer to get going than the fast start kind, but they also last longer and give you a more consistent heat. Squirt on some charcoal lighter fluid. Get some of the fluid on the charcoal on the bottom layer. Do not soak the charcoal --- you just need a little across the charcoal.

2. Stand back from the grill a little and light a match. Make sure you don't have any lighter fluid on your hands. Toss the match into the grill. The lighter fluid will ignite and you might have a fire flash at first. It will go down, but that is why you don't want to be right up against the grill.

3. Allow the charcoal to burn until it starts to show a film of white ash on the outside. This means they are burning well and are ready for the food.

4. Spray the rack with some non-stick spray made for grills. Place the rack on the grill and allow it to heat up.

5. Place your food on the rack. If you have some very fatty foods, they will cause the fire to flare up. Try moving the food around a lot or cooking it on top of aluminum foil first, until some of the fat cooks out. Then you can discard the fat with the foil and put the food on the grill. Keep a water spray bottle handy just in case of a bad flare-up, but try not to use it. The spray will kick ash up onto your food.

6. Roast food by placing it in an open roasting pan with just enough liquid in the bottom to keep it from burning. Close the lid and allow the roast to cook for 30 minutes at a time, checking for water at the end of this time. Use a meat thermometer to check when the meat is done cooking as it's very difficult to keep a charcoal grill at an even temperature.

7. Cook meats and vegetables right on the rack. If you want to use wooden skewers, make sure to soak them in water for 30 minutes before you put them on the grill. You can also soak corn on the cob in water and place it on the grill right in the husk. Make sure to turn foods over often so they cook evenly on both sides.

8. Stir up the charcoal when it starts to look like it's going out --- this will get rid of some ash. You can add new charcoal on top if you will need the grill for much longer. They will catch fire from the briquettes under them.

Diy Aluminum Fence Panels On A Retaining Wall

Placing a fence on top of a retaining wall can provide extra security.

An aluminum fence can provide a measure of security for your home by providing an attractive barrier around your yard. In most cases, the aluminum fence is secured by placing the fence posts inside concrete-filled holes in the ground. If you have a concrete retaining wall along your property line, however, this might not be possible. Instead, you'll have to install the fence on top of the wall. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Make marks on top of the retaining wall to mark the location of the fence posts. Follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding the spacing of the posts.

2. Drill a hole 3 inches wide and 4 inches deep into the retaining wall at each mark with a core drill. You can rent a core drill from an equipment rental business. Wear safety goggles and ear protection when drilling the holes.

3. Insert a fence post into the first hole. Check it for plumb (vertically straight) with a level, and slide shims into the hole between the post and concrete, if needed.

4. Place hydraulic grout into the hole around the post until it's halfway full. Check the post for plumb again, then allow the grout to set for the time specified on the packaging.

5. Remove any shims you placed in the hole, and finish filling it with grout. Set the rest of the posts in the wall, using the same process, and allow the grout to set for the time specified on the package.

6. Install the aluminum fence panels to the posts. The panels are fabricated to replicate wrought-iron fencing, with the advantage of being lighter and cheaper than wrought iron. The fence panels are available in a variety of designs, and can be found at a home improvement store, or at companies that sell fencing and related products. The precise installation process varies by model and manufacturer, so read the instructions provided with the fencing. However, brackets often are included with the fencing that are used to connect the rails on the fence panels to the posts.

Kitchen Tools & Gadgets For Bread Making

Baking bread is a rewarding process, as long as you have all the right tools.

When you want a homemade loaf of bread, there are a variety of recipes you can use, along with a variety of tools. However, there are some tools that you'll use almost every time you make bread. Most of these can already be found in your kitchen, so you can get started as soon as you pick a recipe. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Bread Machine

For those looking for a quick way to make breads, a bread machine will take care of all the work for you. In most machines, all you have to do is measure and add the ingredients, make sure the yeast is in a well in the dry ingredients, and press start. Bread machines allow you to pick whether you just want to make the dough or if you want to cook the loaf as well. It's much less time-consuming than making bread by hand.

Pans

When making bread by hand, you'll need a variety of pan sizes, since not every recipe will make enough dough for a standard-sized pan. Some recipes will make less dough, others more and a variety of pans will prevent cooking issues. Cookbook authors Daniel Leader and Judith Blahnik say cast-iron pans are the best, followed by heavy-gauge aluminum and then glass pans. You can get large pans for your bigger baking projects or even mini pans for creating decorative serving trays.

Thermometer

The temperature of your ingredients is extremely important in bread making, so check temperatures often with a kitchen thermometer. If any ingredient or even rising temperature is off, it can stop the yeast from activating or otherwise affect the bread making process.

Bowl

Leader and Blahnik recommend using a wood or ceramic bowl for mixing and resting the dough. They say using the same bowl will also help your baking experience, because it will rise at the same speed and the bowl will become seasoned. Cookbook authors Eric Treuille and Ursula Ferrigno warn against using metal bowls, since they conduct heat and will cause the dough to rise too fast.

Measuring Tools

You'll need measuring spoons, dry ingredient measuring cups and wet ingredient measuring cups. Since wet ingredients activate the dry ingredients in breads, keeping them separate will prevent any mishaps while baking. A kitchen scale can also be used to accurately measure the dry ingredients.

Couche

A couche is a device used to "proof," or solidify the shape, of dough for breads like baguettes. You can purchase a couche at a cooking or baking store, or you can make your own. Using a floured fabric, create the shapes of the loaves supported by books or pieces of wood at the ends. Place the dough within the shapes and keep an eye on them to make sure the structure is remaining firm.

Mixing tools

When mixing ingredients, you can do it by hand or use a mixer. When mixing by hand, you'll want to use a wooden spoon. Treuille and Ferrigno recommend using a stand mixer when mixing electronically. Stand mixers come with a dough hook that will do the kneading for you, as long as you keep an eye out for over-kneading.

Dish Towels

Dish towels are essential for bread making. They are used to cover the dough while it is rising, trapping the heat inside the bowl while allowing some moisture to be released.

Pastry Brush

For breads with an egg or sugar gloss, you'll need a pastry brush. A pastry brush is delicate enough to brush glosses onto the dough without disturbing the shape and strong enough to brush them onto the cooked breads as well.

Decorate A Tuscan Bedroom

The Tuscan countryside conjures images of rolling hills, rustic farmhouses and weather-worn brick structures. Enhance your bedroom by using Tuscan-inspired materials, colors and decor details. Decorating your bedroom with a Tuscan flair will allow you to create a warm and relaxed space, without sacrificing elegance and sophistication. You can also celebrate your Italian heritage by decorating in a Tuscan style. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Add a rustic, natural look to your Tuscan-inspired bedroom by choosing wrought iron accessories. Choose black iron wall sconces and shelves. Look for furniture, such as a work desk and nightstand, featuring iron legs; buy a dresser with iron hardware. For an elegant touch, hang a wrought iron chandelier featuring electric lights or candles.

2. Create a Italian countryside vibe by choosing rough-hewn wood furniture. Buy a rustic dresser and nightstand set that could be found in a Tuscan farmhouse. If you prefer to use refined wood furniture items, choose dark cherry wood for an authentic look.

3. Add an elegant country flair to your bedroom by decorating with lace. Hang vintage lace curtains on your windows, and place lace doilies on your tables for a romantic touch.

4. Paint your bedroom walls an earthy, Tuscan shade. Choose hues that are inspired by nature, such as olive or sage green, rust orange, sunny yellow, rich plum or burgundy and chocolate brown. For a time-worn appearance, apply a colorwash in a similar shade over the dried basecoat; go over the wet colorwash with a firm, dry brush to create a natural, aged appearance on your walls.

5. If you are feeling artistic, use stencils to create a Tuscan-inspired mural on your bedroom walls. Light up your walls with Italian countryside views, such as rolling green hills, ivy-draped weathered brick walls, rows of grape vines and idyllic farmhouses. As an authentic touch, create the appearance of a rustic brick archway, looking into a patio filled with wrought iron tables, bowls of grapes and wine bottles. Use sponges and paint to make faux bricks and stones.

6. Take advantage of Tuscany's rich wine and grape-growing history by decorating your bedroom with green and purple tones. If you have neutral-toned walls, enhance them by hanging a border featuring grape vines. Create a warm ambiance by stringing mini grape-shaped lights around doorways, windows and around your headboard. Place a comforter featuring grapevine designs on your bed.

Arc Weld Fence Panels Without Warping

Whether you are fencing a home in the city or your ranch in the country, steel panels can be an attractive way to fence your property. Steel fence panels come in many shapes and sizes, so you can be certain that you will find the right fit for your application. One thing to watch out for when installing fence panels is warping. If you follow a few procedures, your fence panels will be straight and last for years to come. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Arc Weld Fence Panels Without Warping

1. Layout your fence panels lined up with the posts to which they will be welded.

2. Clean the panels and posts where they will be welded together using a grinder or wire brush.

3. Attach the grounding cable clamp to the top of the post for the panel you are working on.

4. Set the controls on the arc welder. The manual will tell you what settings are needed for the metal thickness and rod you are using. If you don't have the manual, welding supply stores usually have a guide, often complimentary, for arc welding.

5. Tack weld the panel at the top first, then halfway down the panel, then at the base of the panel.

6. Weld the panel from top to bottom, 8 to 12 inches at a time, allowing the metal to cool before continuing the weld. If you overheat the fence panel, you risk burning through it or warping it.

7. Set up the next panel while the weld cools. This allows you to minimize down time while the previous weld cools.

Get Rust Off Of Cast Iron

For cast iron, it can be easy to care for, but when it starts rusting, it gets a little more difficult. The proper care makes all the difference in the world. I have been cooking in these things my entire life and I love them. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove the rust:

To remove rust you have a couple of options. You can use the old way burn in an open flame then scrub with steel wool; this is how my mom used to do it. Another, more traditional, options soak it in a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water. Make sure you do not leave it soaking for more than a couple of hours, at most over night. Then use a mixture of salt, or something abrasive, and vegetable oil to scrub the rust off. You can use a steel wool, but do not scrub to hard.

You can also use oven cleaner. Be sure to wear gloves for this one. Spray the cleaner on the rust spots, put in a bag of some sort over night, and then clean. I have not personally used this one, but my friend says it works well.

2. Clean the pan:

Wash with soap and water immediately after cooling. DO NOT LET SOAK! After you wash it dry it completely do not let it air dry.

Place on a hot stove for a few minutes to be sure it is completely dry. While it is on there heated, put a small layer of oil inside the wipe with a paper towel. Then store like above.

3. Season the pan:

Put a light coating of vegetable oil, or lard on the pan then place in a warm oven for about an hour. Check after about 30 minutes to ensure the pan is well coated. Take out let it cool then store. Do not store with lids on, and put a couple of paper towels in it to absorb any wetness that may accumulate.

Refinish A Wrought Iron Bar Stool

Make your wrought iron bar stool look brand new.

Wrought iron furniture can fit in with a variety of decors, and a bar stool made from this classic metal can make a good addition to a high counter in a kitchen or a game room, in addition to an outdoor patio. While a wrought iron barstool is typically much more durable than other types of furniture, it can be prone to rusting. You'll need less than a day to refinish a wrought iron barstool. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove the cushion from the barstool, if possible. If it is permanently attached, wrap it with a couple of layers of plastic wrap and carefully secure it with painter's tape. The tape should not cover any portion of the wrought iron, and the cushion should be completely covered.

2. Take the bar stool outdoors and use a steel wool scrubbing device to remove any large portions of rust. Wear gloves to protect your hands.

3. Apply naval jelly, or another similar rust dissolver, thoroughly to the entire bar stool and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes, or the recommended time on the packaging. Due to the fumes and chemicals in most of these products, doing this outdoors while wearing thick gloves and protective eyewear is essential.

4. Rinse off the rust dissolver thoroughly. In most cases, a hose works best for this. To avoid wetting down the painter's tape and potentially getting rust remover or water on the cushion, spray in a downward motion while standing above the bar stool. Keep your protective eye gear and gloves on while doing this, as well as an old pair of clothes. There is a good chance the rust remover will splatter.

5. Allow the bar stool to dry completely in a covered area. Gently wipe it down with a clean microfiber cloth once it is dry to remove any dust or dirt.

6. Paint the wrought iron bar stool with a spray paint primer meant for metal. The best type will have a rust inhibitor built in to protect the furniture; check labels. Let the bar stool dry.

7. Spray the wrought iron with a metal spray paint in your desired color. Let it dry thoroughly and then top it off with a clear top coat, which is also available in spray form, to protect the paint and provide a slight gloss. Let this dry as well.

8. Carefully remove the painter's tape and plastic wrap from the cushion.

Kitchen Decorating Ideas With Plates On The Wall

Kitchen Decorating Ideas With Plates on the Wall

Plates aren't simply dinnerware; they can be used as creative decor pieces as well. If you have a treasured collection of vintage plates, use them to enhance any room in your house. Showcase your heirloom pieces by placing them on a wall shelf; they will become the focal point of the room. If you are decorating on a limited budget, buy inexpensive plates to enhance artwork, pictures, mirrors or any other items that need to be set off. Use vibrant plates to add color and interest to a boring, neutral-toned space. Does this Spark an idea?

Vintage Dessert Plates

Vintage dessert plates come in a medley of patterns and colors, Many feature lacy details, opulent gold trim or dainty floral patterns. If you have an antique plate collection, put them to use in your dining room or kitchen. If your dinner table is against a wall, hang the plates in a circular or square pattern as a charming focal point. Dress your table with a tablecloth or place mats that complement the sweet plates; choose pale pink, soft blue or mint green table decor. Hang the plates using adhesive plate hangers, which are spring-loaded so that they securely grasp edges.

Decorative Border

Use vibrantly colored plates to create a border around a mirror, a piece of artwork or any other decor item. Hang a painting on your living room wall, and use single-hued ceramic plates to outline the piece; choose plate colors that complement shades featured in the painting. In your bedroom, set off a basic vanity mirror using floral-patterned porcelain plates for a feminine look.

Wall Shelf

Hang a wall shelf and display plates that coordinate with the overall theme of a room. If your kitchen features a Tuscan-inspired style, install a rustic wrought iron shelf. Decorate the shelf with gold-hued ceramic plates featuring grapevine and olive patterns. In a room with an island vibe, hang a white wicker shelf filled with blue shell-patterned plates.

Festive Designs

Use plates to form festive designs on your wall. If you are celebrating Valentine's day, arrange red ceramic plates in a heart formation in your bedroom. At Christmastime, use green plates to create a pine tree in your living room; place a shiny gold plate on top to represent a star. During spring and summer months, use flower-shaped plates in shades of green, yellow and orange to create wall floral arrangements.

Plate Backdrop

Hang decorative plates to form a backdrop for large furniture pieces. Place your bed against a wall and display plates in a square pattern to represent a headboard; choose plate colors that complement the hues in your bedding. Hang several vertical rows of vintage plates behind an antique sofa.

Which Side Of A Wood Fence Has To Face Your Neighbor

A double-sided fence is finished on both sides.

Fencing is a long-standing source of contention between neighbors. Local communities instill good-neighbor regulations or policies in an attempt to mitigate the potential conflict. One traditional gesture of goodwill is to face the finished side of a wood fence towards the neighbor or the street. It's mandatory in many communities. Does this Spark an idea?

The Good Side of the Fence

Communities may specify or recommend that the finished side of a boundary fence should face the public or the adjacent property. The back side of the fence exposes the structural framework, and is often considered the "ugly" side. One reason for this measure is security; the framework can provide footholds for climbing. The regulation can apply to all fence materials and styles, such as wood, split rail, chain link and wrought iron.

Rural Properties

One place where the regulation may not apply is rural or agricultural properties. Conflict between rural neighbors centers on agriculture and livestock, where failure to maintain a fence can result in livestock trespass and extensive damage to crops, for example. Regulations for fencing in rural locations focus on property lines and maintenance, rather than aesthetic issues. In some rural jurisdictions cost-sharing and maintenance is regulated and fence design and construction also has legal requirements.

Double-sided Fences

A double-sided fence has a finished appearance on both sides. Boards are fastened on each side with posts are contained in the center. This fence is attractive and secure for both neighbors. Another advantage is fairness in calculating the cost; each has identical views of the fence. Shadowbox style is frequently used; the boards alternate on each side and can sometimes be decoratively cut. Double-sided fences cost about 15 percent more than the single-sided fence.

Good Neighbor Fence

This regulation is often referred to as the "good neighbor" requirement. Local codes also use the term to describe a philosophy for fencing. In that case, the authority is encouraging communication between neighbors prior to fence construction, including sharing costs. A dispute resolution process may be outlined in fencing regulations, and fence viewers are appointed in some jurisdictions to mediate conflict. Not all jurisdictions control fence design. Some only regulate height, and simply urge neighbors to cooperate.

About Ornamental Garden Gates

A garden gate welcomes visitors to the yard.

An ornamental garden gate makes a garden appear to be a destination, as if a visitor has reached the end of a journey to a special place. Garden gates can be massive stone structures, delicate iron arches or anything in between. Whether draped with blooming wisteria or sleek and minimal, garden gates provide a welcoming entrance to an outdoor oasis. Does this Spark an idea?

Materials

Ornamental garden gates can be made of brick, stone, iron, wood or even vinyl. Some garden gates are woven from bamboo or other natural materials, such as grapevine. Gates made of brick, stone and metal have a traditional look and are better suited to formal or traditional gardens. Wood has a more casual look, well suited to a country garden or a casual space. Bamboo complements an Asian or modern garden.

Styles

The style of the garden should dictate the style of the garden gate. An English country garden, for example, is a perfect fit for a wooden arbor. Elaborate, curvy and romantic wrought-iron gates complement a Victorian house and garden. A naturalized garden would benefit from a stacked-stone gate or a rustic garden gate made of untreated wood naturally aged and weathered to a soft gray. Asian garden gates have a minimalist, sleek look for Japanese gardens.

Types

The most common types of ornamental gates are archways and arbors. Archways are simple, open, curving structures meant to frame a view or provide an entrance to a garden. Arbors are more elaborate, with three enclosed sides typically made of wood or wrought iron. Both options provide architectural structure to the garden, as well as a place for plants to climb. As plants overtake the structures, they become an organic element.

History

Ornamental garden gates can be traced back to the Ancient Egyptians, who built pergolas, or a series of archways tied together with wooden beams or posts. These structures provided a shady spot for sitting or strolling beneath and are still used in gardens today. Climbing plants typically grow up and over pergolas, providing further shade.

Sources

Ornamental garden gates are available from multiple sources. Vintage garden gates can be found at antique malls, architectural salvage stores and yard sales. Nurseries and home-improvement stores carry garden gates in any style. Some people build their own, using grapevine, lattice or other materials. Some companies hand-forge wrought-iron gates. This is a more expensive option, but the end result is a unique work of art, almost like a garden sculpture.

Mix Dining Table And Chair Styles

Mixing a dining room table with different styles of chairs doesn't have to be a challenge. Whether adding to an existing set or buying a mixed set on purpose, using different styles of chairs can add flair to any dining room. This guide will outline choose pieces that will earn compliments from dinner guests for years to come. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Mixing Existing Chairs

1. Whether mixing in folding chairs for a dinner party or a wicker patio set for flair, pulling together a mixed dining room set is easy. First, choose chairs from around the house that are similar in height or shape to the chairs already around the table. The table will help ground different designs, but chairs with different heights may look awkward. Use similar wood tones if possible, and look at the general shape of the chair backs. Is the back rectangular with rounded corners? Maybe it has a rounded heart shape, oval or square backrest. Chairs that are different in tones work better if they have a similar shape.

2. Create a test arrangement around the table. If some chairs have armrests and others don't, mix the chairs so that every other chair has armrests. This will help guests from bumping elbows around the table, as well as look more polished. Do not create a pattern around the table, however, with just two types of chairs. Make sure to incorporate at least three different styles to create a mix-n-match look.

3. Look at the arrangement. Do any chairs stand out as being bigger or taller than the other pieces? Chairs that are bigger in scale, or stand out from the rest, work best at either end of the table. At the ends of the table, there are no other pieces to compare the chairs to. If the chair were placed along the side of the table with the other styles, the differences would be more noticeable.

Adding New Chairs to the Table

4. When adding just a few extra chairs to an existing set, the goal is to pick pieces that complement the dining set--not match it. Most dining room sets sit six to eight people. The chairs at either end of the table are known as head chairs. These chairs usually have arms and may be more detailed than the chairs that flank the sides of the table. The head chairs can be mixed in with the chairs on the sides, opening up space at either end of the table. Consider choosing new head chairs that stand out. If the dining room set is dark wood with red upholstery, look at leather chairs in a similar red shade, or maybe head chairs with a red pattern. If the chairs are solid wood, use upholstered head chairs to tie the dining set to a rug, window treatments, or room colors.

5. You may want to add many chairs to an existing set. Inheriting a dining room set usually means inheriting broken and wobbly chairs as well. Unfortunately, half the set may need to be replaced. Mixing and matching to older sets can be difficult with the usually ornate table designs and chair backs. Don't try and match the intricate wood cutouts or upholstery in the chair back. Trying to match chairs too closely tends to draw the eye to the differences instead of similarities between the two. A great way to pair new chairs with a set is to choose a solid color chair with a fabric back. Choosing a bold chair color such as black, white, orange or aqua adds a daring color splash to the dining room. Then choose a fabric color, such as a dark brown micro-suede to match the dark maple table. A white chair with black fabric can blend with cast-iron black chairs. A tan textured fabric can blend with knotty pine or birch.

6. If mixing and matching is just for flair, follow the above guidelines for a clean look. Textures such as wicker, plastic and bamboo can give dimension without stepping outside color schemes or mixing too many fabrics.

Floor Welding Tools

Use the proper tools to weld your flooring.

If you are laying vinyl, linoleum or plastic flooring, you often need to weld the flooring itself or the corners to hold the flooring in place. This adheres the flooring to the subfloor, but it also helps connect floor seams. To do this, you must have the proper tools, and these tools are types of welding equipment. Always use safety gear like goggles and gloves to protect yourself. Does this Spark an idea?

Heat Gun

A heat gun allows you to heat up the flooring so that it sticks. These guns are hand held, and you can purchase them either corded or cordless. You usually have the choice of electric, air or gas heat guns. Gas heat guns generally run on propane gas, while you need an air compressor for air heat guns. To use this tool, insert a tip into the opening at the mouth of the tool, and hold down the "On" button. Run the tip along the seam or the edges of the flooring.

Welding Machine

If you are working on a large area, use a welding machine. These machines operate via a laser beam. The laser works similar to the heat gun, except that you can just aim the beam at the area that you want to weld as opposed to holding the gun over the flooring section. This device is on wheels, allowing you to roll it into place. You must connect this tool to a power cord. Never stand near the laser beam, and do not look directly at it. Always wear goggles when operating this device.

Welding Tip

A high speed welding tip connects to your heat gun, and you use the point of the tool to weld your flooring. This tool has an electrode that moves through the entire length of the tip, and it ends in a very sharp tip. The structure of this tip allows you to quickly weld your flooring. To use this tool, insert it into the heat gun, and wait until the tip is hot. Then run it along your flooring.

Hand Groover

A hand groover slides along your seams, sealing the seams so you can't see them. This is a hand tool with a small tip, which you move along the actual seam. You can use this tool on any type of flooring, but you must heat linoleum first with a hand gun. If not, the chips will clog your hand groover blade. To use this tool, wait until it's hot and then run it along your seam.

Attach Upholstered Recessed Panels To A Headboard

Update your headboard with upholstered panels.

Recessed panels in a headboard provide depth and interest to the headboard. Placing upholstered panels into these recesses adds a touch of softness and a pop of color. Since the bed is already the focal point of a bedroom, attaching these fabric panels help to enrich the space and provide a way to tie the bed to the linens and curtains. Purchase enough material to sew decorative pillows or make other decorative elements for your bedroom. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the size of the recessed area.

2. Transfer these measurements to a piece of foam core. Cut the foam core with a craft knife ½ an inch smaller than the measurement of the recessed area all the way around.

3. Transfer the measurement for the recessed area onto a piece of batting. Cut the batting 1 inch larger than the recessed area all the way around.

4. Transfer the measurements of the recessed area to the wrong side of your fabric and add 2 inches all the way around. Cut the fabric with scissors.

5. Place the fabric with the print-side down on the work surface.

6. Center the batting on the fabric and center the foam core on the batting.

7. Pull the center of the fabric on the bottom edge around to the backside of the foam core. Hold the fabric tightly and secure with a staple.

8. Repeat for the top, left and right sides.

9. Staple the rest of the fabric to the backside of the foam core, moving toward the corners from the staple in the center of each side.

10. Secure the corners with multiple staples to hold securely.

11. Apply a 2-inch piece of hook-and-loop tape to each corner of the upholstered panel by peeling one side of the paper backing off and pressing the tape onto the upholstered panel. Peel the other paper backing off the hook-and-loop tape on each corner and press the panel onto the headboard in the recessed area.

Build Octagonal Wood Columns

Build an octagon column out of poplar wood.

Octagonal columns have been around for centuries. They have adorned Egyptian tombs and Roman coliseums. Today, they are still in use in more modestly constructed homes as a way to add aesthetic appeal or even structural integrity. Many of these modern columns are plastic. But you can build your own out of real wood. It's not that difficult, and it's fun. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Set the miter saw at 22.5 degrees and miter both edges of all eight pieces of poplar.

2. Lay four of the pieces of poplar on their edges on a table. Using the brush, spread glue along the mitered edge of all four pieces. Stand up two of the pieces against the wall. Bring the mitered corners together. Stretch a piece of masking tape over the mitered corner.

3. Stand up another piece of poplar, bring the mitered corner into place with the other two and tape them together. Do the fourth piece next, taping it together with the other three.

4. Lay out the other four pieces on the table. Glue all four mitered corners. Stack them one at a time, taping each one into place on the column until the column is complete and can stand on its own.

5. Place a nylon strap clamp around the middle of the stack and tighten slightly. Place another clamp on the top and bottom of the column and tighten slightly.

6. Lay the column down and begin adding the remaining strap clamps, alternating the handles evenly down the column. When all the clamps are in place, begin tightening them hard, watching as the glue oozes out evenly, adjust the clamps as necessary to get even coverage. Wipe off any excess glue with a wet rag. Let dry overnight. Sand with 100-grit sandpaper.

Kanawha Glass History

Kanawha Glass Company enjoyed a 35 year lifespan in which its artists created large and small glass containers, glass animals and other figurines. Collectors today covet the bright colors and whimsical designs of Kanawha glass items. You can find vintage Kanawha glass for sale at antique stores, online antique dealers and eBay. Does this Spark an idea?

Company

Kanawha Glass Company was an American art glass company that began in 1953 when a few of the artisans from the failed Dunbar Glass Company came together to start a new business. The company grew in popularity in the 1960s and it acquired Hamon Glass company in 1969. Kanawha continued producing its line of glass products until 1987 when it was acquired by Dereume Glass.

Products

Kanawha Glass offered close to 350 different products at its peak of production. Glass horses, cats, dogs, owls and swans are among the different types of animal figurines Kanawha created. Glass bowls, with the head and neck of a swan, and owl-shaped drinking glasses were some of the more creative choices the glass artists made. Tall, elongated vases with bubble textures and free-formed scalloped tops and vases created from milk glass in the shape of a shoe were among their more fanciful home décor items.

Colors

Shades of blue, orange, red, amber, green, brown and white are the predominant colors used to make Kanawha glass objects. Most of the colors, except white, were transparent and sometimes combined to add interest to the designs. The white objects were milk glass and were opaque. Kanawha also offered several satin glass pieces made from the same seven colors but lined with white glass for strength and design.

Textures

One of Kanawha Glass Company's specialties was the production of crackle glass objects. To make crackle glass, you blow molten glass into a mold, then dip it into water or sawdust before refiring it to seal the cracks. The breakage rate for making crackle glass is high, sometimes as much as 50 percent. Bubble glass is another design style prevalent in Kanawha glass objects. Bubbles are deliberately formed in molten glass by adding certain chemicals or by inserting spikes.

Manufacturing Techniques

Like many of the American art glass companies of the time, some of Kanawha glass objects were hand blown and free formed and some were made by pouring molten glass into molds. Many of the glass artists worked for different art glass companies, so the techniques were either the same or similar across the board.

Ivy Centerpiece Ideas

Ivy Centerpiece Ideas

When it comes to a wedding reception, dinner party or anniversary party, one important aspect of the decorations is the centerpieces. Centerpieces add to the atmosphere of your event, adding elegance and tying the room together. One element to consider using in your centerpieces is ivy, either real or silk, as it is a unique material that can bring fresh sophistication to any mood you are trying to set.

Boughs of Ivy

If you are using long tables for your affair, boughs of ivy are an option for a low lying centerpiece that will trail down the table. Attach ribbons, bows or strings of beads to the ivy to give it a more personalized look. Place a few tea lights along the ivy to add some candlelight to the setting.

Ivy Topiaries

To add charm to your event, consider using ivy topiaries as your centerpieces. Use one large topiary, or mix and match an array of sizes to add depth to your tables.

Ivy Watering Cans

If you are having a garden party, consider using watering cans filled with ivy for your table centerpieces. To add variety, purchase different colors and sizes of watering cans. You can either fill them with potted ivy plants, or you can use draped ivy that spills out on to the table for a whimsical look.

Ivy and Wrought Iron

A unique idea for your centerpieces are wrought-iron candelabras with ivy wrapped through them. The wrought-iron will bring a rustic feeling and the ivy will soften the metal, adding a romantic feeling to the event. To make the reception look more exceptional, use candelabras of different shapes and sizes.

What Kind Of Lighting Is Best To Use Outside On The Backyard Porch

Firelight provides warm lighting for an outdoor porch.

A backyard porch is a functional addition to a home design. It allows you to entertain outdoors without having to use your grassy backyard for seating. Once the sun goes down, you need adequate lighting for your backyard porch that doesn't hinder the mood or natural elements of outdoor living. Does this Spark an idea?

Firelight

If your backyard porch has a fireplace, firelight is one of the most inviting options for outdoor lighting. Burn natural wood in your fireplace because the crackle of logs and the flickering sparks add ambiance to the outdoor setting. If your backyard porch doesn't have a fireplace, purchase a firepit or a chiminea at your local hardware store. You can burn natural wood in an outdoor firepit or chiminea and many varieties are inexpensive.

Candlelight

Candlelight is a common option for backyard porch lighting because it is inexpensive, creates a warm environment and produces a welcoming fragrance. As an added benefit, some outdoor candles are made with citronella and keep bugs away. Purchase large wrought iron or brushed nickel lanterns and place a long-lasting candle in each. Display candles on accent tables, lawn tables and patio furnishings.

String Lights

String lights can be used to decorate a backyard porch all year round. Install string lights on your stair railing, in trees and in large bushes near your porch. Hang string lights from rafters or beams covering your porch area. Choose small or medium white bulbs for a simple, uniform look or select larger colorful bulbs for a festive design.

Chandleliers

Chandeliers are an eye-appealing lighting option for a backyard porch if you have beams or rafters you can hang one from. Install candles in a chandelier if you want natural light or use low-watt bulbs in an electric chandelier. Opt for a wrought iron chandelier that has a rustic outdoor appeal. Avoid large, showy chandeliers that are too sparkly and glittery for a backyard porch.

Replacing Iron Railings On Outside Steps

Deterioration

Outdoor wrought iron hand railings can rust over time, especially after years of being exposed to rain, snow and ice. When the condition of the railing deteriorates to the point that metal primer and paint can no longer protect it against corrosion, it may be time to remove the old railing and replace it with new iron or aluminum railing. Changing a rusted railing can improve your home's curb appeal, and if you have the right tools, you can probably do the job yourself.

Removal

Use an adjustable wrench to take off the old railing by removing the lag screws that fasten the railing to the house. If the railing was embedded directly into the concrete, cut the support posts level with the concrete stoop using a circular saw with a carbide tip blade. You will want to remove any rust stains from the concrete stoop. One way to do this is by squeezing the juice of a lemon directly onto the stains. Allow it to sit for a few minutes, but do not let the lemon juice dry. Scrub with a stiff bristled brush such as an old, hard texture toothbrush. In some cases, you may need to use a wire brush to remove stubborn rust spots.

Types

Visit a local home improvement retailer if you want to purchase prefabricated metal sections usually kept in stock. Select railing made of solid metal rather than hollow tubing. These will be more expensive, but the railings are more durable. Keep in mind when buying new railing that a metal railing is easier to install than a wood railing, and it requires less maintenance. Aluminum railings are a practical choice because they will not rust. This type of railing is affordable, easy to install, and usually available in a variety of different colors and styles. Railing sections also come pre-assembled.

Installation

Position the new railing at least two inches from the edge of the stoop. Mark the drill holes and then pre-drill the holes using a 3/16" masonry bit. Attach the railing posts securely to the concrete or brick stoop using galvanized or stainless steel masonry screws that are weather and rust resistant.

Problems With Outside Metal Fences

Many people choose metal fencing over wood for the durability and endless style choices. Wrought iron fences built many years ago have withstood the test of time. If built properly, metal fences can be problem-free for decades. Regular maintenance ensures avoidance of serious repairs. When problems or damage occur, small or large portions of metal fence can be easily repaired. Does this Spark an idea?

Damage

Thin metal is easily damaged and dented when hit by lawn equipment, pets and toys. Dents are not only unsightly, they can be a harbor for rust and corrosion. The smallest hole can allow water to enter a metal fence and cause extensive damage. If something hits your metal fence, repair the damage before rust and corrosion set in. Rust spreads very quickly but it is also easily stopped if caught early.

Quality Materials

If you have the opportunity to influence the design of a metal fence, choose the highest quality materials available. Aluminum offers lightweight, medium strength and is resistant to rust, yet specialized welding skills are needed to build with aluminum. Also, there is a much broader choice of styles in steel. Steel is heavier but stronger and comes in many gauges. A heavier gauge metal may cost more initially but will be sturdier and take longer to be damaged by the elements.

Metal Damage

Metal's worst adversary is water. More decorative fence has more areas vulnerable to moisture damage. You can prevent this damage by making sure that the pickets and posts are welded all the way around, on both top and bottom. When water gets inside metal pickets and posts, two main problems occur. First, the metal begins to rust from the inside out. This damage remains hidden until it is too late. Second, the force of water expanding when it freezes causes metal fencing to swell and sometimes split. Square pickets and posts become rounded -- a telltale sign of metal fence that has experienced freeze damage. If you have existing metal fencing and notice any small pinholes, seal the seams with silicone caulk.

Finishing

To prevent water damage of fences, it is important to provide a continuous seal. Metal fence can be painted or powder coated. Many fence builders powder-coat a fence and then weld the joints together. This method allows chipping, peeling and rust to occur at the most vulnerable place. Connecting a metal fence mechanically allows you to remove sections for repairs and provides a continuous seal against rust and moisture when powder-coated. Painting can be a good option, but metal fence must be painstakingly prepared for paint to adhere and last. You will have to paint every two to three years, while powder coating done properly will last 10-15 years.

Maintenance

Because metal can deteriorate quickly when damaged, it should be inspected on a regular basis like in the spring and fall. Damaged areas must be repaired to prevent spreading. If the finish is chipped, cracked or bubbling, it needs to be repaired. Small areas can usually be cleaned and repainted.

Window Treatments For High Ceilings

Tall window treatment

High ceilings and tall windows can add drama, elegance, light and beauty to a room. But they also are decorating challenges, often making it difficult to create a sense of warmth and intimacy. Many homeowners give up, avoid using the room and forgo curtains altogether. But a few interior design tips can help tame your room's outsize scale and make it more inviting. Does this Spark an idea?

Curtain Width and Depth of Return

To determine curtain panel widths, measure the width of the curtain track or curtain rod and allow about 6 inches for overlapping in the center. Multiple this track or rod width number by 2 to allow for bunching, pleating and gathering, unless you're using box-pleated curtains, in which case, multiple by 3. Divide that number by the width of the panel you want to use (the common sizes are 40, 42, 44, 45, 48, and 54 inches, with 54 the standard), and round up to the next whole number, which will give you the number of panel widths required. If an odd number results, then one width can be cut in half and added to the outside of each curtain. Use this procedure if you have functional curtains and/or need to cover the entire window. With decorative draperies that don't close, you can be more flexible. Avoid skinny drapes, however, since wider panels will provide the illusion that the room is longer and more balanced.

The "return" is the distance a traverse drapery (one with draws and pulleys) must return to the wall to cover the gap at the end of each drapery created by the outward projection of the brackets. The standard return is 3 1/2 inches, but with window treatments over 9 feet tall, you might need a deeper return, as much as 8 to 10 inches, for the drapery to hang properly. Using a deeper return places the window treatment out from the wall and allows deep pleats and folds to enhance the richness of the fabric.

Pleats and Fabrics

In rooms with high ceilings, use richer, bolder colors for window treatments and luxury fabrics, such as silk, taffeta or velvet. If a pattern is desired, choose a horizontal or railroad stripe that will appear to give the curtains more volume. If you use pleated fabric for window treatments, the pleats should be over-sized, at least 6-inches wide. Pleats that are too small may be hard to see. In large rooms with wooden floors, consider adding sound-absorbing interlining to draperies to avoid an "echo chamber" effect.

Valances and Other Window Toppers

For window valances, cornices and other window top treatments, use the "Rule of Fifths or Sixths." Divide the finished length of your drapery by five or six to determine the finished length of a valance or swag. The valance should cover the header (pleats or shirring) of the drapery, as well as the hardware and frame of the window. If you have double-story windows, consider a valance or curtain rod above the lowest tier of windows, which will create a horizontal line around the room and bring the scale of the room down.

Rods and Tiebacks

With oversized windows, drapery rods and rings must be oversized, too. For instance, a twisted length of wrought iron rod that would look good in a standard-height room won't appear substantial enough in a room with vaulted ceilings and large windows. Use curtain rods that are at least 3 inches in diameter. If the windows are tall but narrow, adding an extra-wide curtain rod will give the illusion of width.

For tiebacks, use the "Golden Mean" ratio. Either place them high, about a third of the way down the drapery, or place them low, about two-thirds down. Tiebacks in the middle are less attractive because they cut the fall of fabric in half.

Length

Choose drapery panels that reach from the floor almost to the ceiling, which will soften the room and also absorb sound. At the very least, hang your draperies as high as possible to make the room look more balanced. Leave several inches between curtains and ceiling, so it appears you're dressing the window, not the wall. If you can't afford functional window treatments--ones that close--make them decorative instead. For example, use inexpensive cotton fabric with a tassled edge to create side panels that always are open. Since most ready made draperies average 72 to 84 inches in length and only a few carry 96 or 108 inch draperies, if your windows are longer, you may have to consider custom or home-made treatments. Some high-end stores like http://www.dreamdrapes.com have draperies up to 130 inches long.

Repair The Rustedout Area On A Wroughtiron Railing

Restore the appearance of wrought iron by fixing rusted out spots.

While a wrought-iron railing adds charm to the home and is durable, it's not impervious to rust. The railing is especially susceptible to rust if exposed to the elements. The entire railing doesn't need to be ripped out and replaced just because of a rusted area. Instead, repair that spot on the railing to restore the wrought iron's overall appearance. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Rub a wire brush briskly over the rusted-out spot on the railing to remove any loose pieces. Scrub affected areas with a steel wool pad to further remove rust.

2. Sand the rusted spot with 80-grit sandpaper followed by 120-grit sandpaper to smooth the surface. Sanding provides a smooth surface and gets rid of even more rust on the railing.

3. Wipe the railing with a rag and a solution of hot, soapy water to remove any dust and residue. Allow the railing to dry thoroughly.

4. Apply a chemical rust remover if any rust remains on the railing. The product you use should contain strong alkaline or acid to effectively dissolve the rust. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for using the rust remover as they vary among products. Typically, wipe on remover with a damp cloth, wait about 30 minutes, then wipe off with a dry cloth.

5. Clean the railing a final time with a rag and hot, soapy water. Dry it thoroughly with clean cloths.

6. Apply two coats of alkyd rust-inhibitive primer to affected areas of the railing, allowing the first coat to dry completely before applying the next. Let the primer dry for at least four hours, then follow up with two coats of alkyd enamel paint. Use a small paintbrush to smooth the primer and paint onto the railing.

Patio Railing Ideas

Patio Railing Ideas

A patio railing provides a decorative element as well as a security feature that outlines the paved entertainment area in your backyard. The railing can complement the patio's shape and provide a base to set your benches against or from which to hang flowerpots. It may also serve as security to both you and your pets. It can help your large dog from wandering on or off the patio, and you can use it to steady yourself on an icy morning. Does this Spark an idea?

Traditional Wood Railings

Create a traditional style with natural or painted colonial wood railings. Use posts with a rectangular bottom, oval middle and ball cap to capture a classic colonial design. Use a thin rounded piece of wood across the top and bottom of the railing area between posts. Use thin oval pieces of wood to create vertical slats in the middle of the railing.

Secure a wood picket fence as a patio railing for a country style. Hang a small flowerpot from every third picket to add some color. You can also line flower-filled planters or large flowerpots along the railing's base. Build the railing short to keep it purely decorative or build it tall to use the railing as a protective barrier.

White Wood Railings

Add white wood railings to accent patios that contain white marble, concrete, stone or wood. Use a thick horizontal slat of white wood for the top and bottom of the railing. Use thick white rectangular posts to secure the railing and thin white posts to create an open stripe pattern between the slats.

Aluminum Railings

Take advantage of aluminum's sturdy and simple nature to create a variety of patio railing ideas. Use a short cream-colored rectangular railing with an open crisscross pattern in the middle for a soft style. Use a short green rectangular railing with vine-shaped vertical slats across the middle for a style that will blend easily with your garden area.

You can also use thin silver angel-shaped aluminum posts that stick above the railing pieces for a fancier look. Add silver spiral pieces of aluminum to create the railing slats, and use a single silver spiral as a vertical line across the top of the railings. Add small silver pots filled with white flowers on each side of a railing post for decoration.

Wrought Iron Railings

Black wrought iron has a versatile and fancy nature that makes it a popular choice for highly decorative patio railings. Use thick twisted pieces of wrought iron topped with flower-shaped iron caps for the railing posts. Add thin, twisted pieces of wrought iron to create vertical slats across the railing for a fancy floral style. Run a twisted piece of iron horizontally across the top and bottom of the railing to secure the ends.

Loop long pieces of iron so that both ends stick into the patio and create an arch in the middle for a different look. Place the loops every 8 inches to create posts for the railing. Weave one long piece of the iron horizontally across the lower section of the railing and another piece across the upper section.

Choose Patio Covers

Patio covers are an ideal way to protect furniture from rain and snow, create a shaded enclosure or platform and offer a new addition to a home. With a variety of choices from which to choose, you'll want to consider how and when (seasonally) you intend to use the patio cover and how much you're willing to spend. Manufactured and custom patio covers are available from local retailers and online stores. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Evaluate your patio layout and decide which patio cover offers the most coverage, shade and protection against the elements. Depending on the design, adjustable patio covers can be adjusted to meet the needs of changing weather.

2. Consider the construction of the patio cover. Aluminum, wrought iron, vinyl and wood patio covers can vary considerably in terms of construction, size and color. Wood patios are designed as an extension and improvement of the home and provide a durable platform for entertaining guests and enjoying outdoor views. Be aware of possible rotting, termites, water stains with wood. Schedule regular maintenance and re-stain a wood patio to minimize wear. Other materials, including aluminum, wrought iron and vinyl, are not subject to rotting; however, rust stains can occur with iron.

3. Decide between a permanent and a removable patio cover. Retractable awnings and fabric canopies are removable while pergolas, arbors and gazebos are permanent.

4. Evaluate the terms of the warranty. Ask if the warranty is for the life of the patio or if a term is assigned. Ask if wear and tear, such as cracking, chipping, peeling, rotting or fading, is covered under the warranty.

Italian Coffee Cafe Decorating Ideas

Italian cafe.

Italy is a country that is full of Old World charm and decorative flair. One of the most charming symbols of the Italian culture is the Italian cafe. Dark colors, brick walls, wrought-iron tables and wooden furniture make up the heart of most Italian cafes. Incorporating Italian antiques with a coffee shop theme will allow you to recreate the look of a quaint kitchen and coffee shop reminiscent of cafes that serve coffee in the heart of Italy. Does this Spark an idea?

Walls

When decorating your interior living space to represent an Italian cafe, you will want to incorporate Italian-themed colors and wall accents. Begin by choosing a color. Popular color choices are dark burgundy, hunter green, deep red, brown and black. One design decorating idea would be to paint one area above cabinets or on a wall with chalkboard paint. The black background provides a space where you can write Italian menus, quote famous lines and write recipes of Italian dishes. Ceilings that have tin or copper tiles can accentuate a kitchen or dinette area and add Old World flair. Brick wainscoting on the walls along with brick or travertine tiles on the floor can add the feel of an old Italian cafe to the room.

Furniture and Appliances

Accentuate your decorative accents by having the right furniture and appliances to accent your cafe area. Start in the kitchen. Use an authentic or replicated espresso machine, coffeemaker or cappuccino maker. Accent the surrounding area with Italian coffee flavors and canisters. A small bistro table is essential for achieving the decorative Italian cafe look. A table made from wrought iron with matching chairs represents the Italian cafe look. A side buffet table may also be usefully implemented into this decor. Make sure the table has a vintage design with a dark wood or black finish. You can display coffee condiments such as cream, sugar and cinnamon in glass jars for a functional and decorative display.

Decorative Accents

Decorative accents are what will make the Italian cafe come to life. Have a hanging rack in the kitchen or themed area that holds a variety of Italian-designed coffee mugs. Add a white or red-and-white-checkered tablecloth to the bistro table and accent with espresso cups and saucers. Fill the center of the table with a basket of biscotti for a functional look. Use any Italian-inspired antiques you have such as clocks, dishes, vintage metal signs and cast-iron coasters to scatter about the area. Incorporate copper pots throughout the kitchen area. Bring in garden urns from your patio and fill with faux topiaries. Add clear Christmas lights throughout the room to add tranquility. A small votive candle can be placed on the table and side tables to add a cozy touch. Ceramic or resin French chefs also add to the look of a Italian coffee cafe decorating theme. They generally hold a chalkboard that can be used to relate messages or welcome guests in Italian with "Benvenuto."

Maintain A Metal Patio Table

Metal tables can get covered in pine leaves and other debris.

Patio furniture comes in many types of metal, including wrought iron and aluminum. Manufacturers generally make metal patio tables rustproof, but if you have an older table or a manufacturer who did not make it rustproof, you will have to add steps to your maintenance to prevent rust formation. Even if you have a rustproof table, regular cleaning will keep it in good shape for several years. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Check the table for rust spots, if you do not have a rust-free table, or even if you are unsure what kind of table you have. Remove any rust spots by scrubbing them off with a wire brush.

2. Wet the table down with a garden hose. Fill a bucket with water and enough liquid dish soap to create suds.

3. Dip a nylon scrub brush in the soapy water and scrub the table from the table top to the bottom of the legs. Rinse the table with the garden hose. Wipe it dry with a towel.

4. Apply a thin layer of paste wax to the metal parts of the table with a cloth. If you have a glass table top, you do not need to put the wax on that. This is not necessary for rustproof tables.

5. Cover the table with a plastic tarp whenever it rains, and during the winter when you will not be using the table. Weigh down the edges of the tarp with rocks or brick.

Paint An Iron Fence

Is your outdoor iron fence getting a little worn and rusty? No need to panic about replacement or hiring a contractor. Painting your iron fence is an easy and inexpensive weekend project. Iron is one of the best materials for outdoor use. It is durable and resists mold and rot. Its primary drawback is that all metal when exposed to the elements will eventually rust. Stay on top of the war with rust with a little labor and a little paint.

Instructions

1. Prep your iron fence for painting by removing all rust. Use a steel bristled wire brush and scraper to remove all traces of rust. Use 80-grit sandpaper for any curved or round portions of your fence.

2. Spray the fence with phosphoric acid. Acid will remove any traces of rust that you may have missed with your scraper. Allow the spray to penetrate the surface overnight. Go back over the iron fence with your wire brush.

3. Brush primer onto all parts of the iron fence. Be sure to use an oil-based primer formulated for metal. Use a thin, even coat of primer, making sure to create a smooth finish, free of brush strokes. Allow primer to dry.

4. Apply oil-based spray paint to any hard-to-reach areas of your iron fence. Focus on cracks and crevices. Wipe up any drip marks with a paint brush.

5. Use a paint brush to apply oil-based paint to the fence. Start at the top and work down, consistently brushing in a downward motion. Avoid drip marks and visible brush strokes.

6. Keep your iron fence looking attractive by performing touchups yearly. Nicked and chipped spots are prime targets for rust.

Iron Vs Aluminum Mailbox Post

Mailboxes in the snow.

Whether you're installing a new mailbox or replacing an old one, it might be a good idea to put some thought into the post material you are planning to use. Many homeowners choose against using wood products for their mailbox posts and choose posts made out of materials like iron or aluminum, but there are many differences between the two that should be considered. Does this Spark an idea?

Iron

According to Chemicool.com, the Earth's crust is 5.6 percent iron so we don't have to worry about using a scarce material. Iron is also a very strong material, that's why you see it used in so many construction applications. And according to science.jrank.org, when iron is paired with concrete, it creates the strongest combination of all available building materials.

Aluminum

According to Chemicool.com, "pure aluminum is quite soft," and it lacks strength. And when it's "used in commercial applications, has small amounts of silicon and iron added, resulting in greatly improved strength and hardness." Because aluminum is inexpensive and corrosion-resistant, it's used abundantly, and according to Chemicool.com, "only iron is used more widely than aluminum."

Workability

While iron is used in more applications than aluminum, this doesn't necessarily mean that it's easier to work with. In the case of installing a mailbox post, which is a fairly simple task, some things to consider are product weight and maneuverability. Because aluminum is a lighter metal, it's going to be easier to move around. And if you are going to have to penetrate the material with a screw to secure your mailbox, aluminum will be much easier to do so. Also, if for some reason you need to cut the post, aluminum will be much friendlier in this process.

Weather Impact

Because mailboxes are exposed to everything Mother Nature has to throw at them, it's important to look at how each metal will hold up outside. According to Corrosion-Doctors.org, "only iron and steel rust," while other metals corrode. And since aluminum doesn't, perhaps this is something you want to consider. There are outdoor paints that help with rusting metals, but then you may have to repaint your iron post once a year.

Durabilty

Since mailboxes are exposed to cars, trees and unruly teenagers, you may want to take a look at which metal can take more abuse. While a fallen tree, car accident or mailbox baseball will surely damage your mailbox, you may want your post to remain standing after your mailbox has suffered a traumatic experience. If this is the case, an iron post is the way to go because it's more likely to inflict damage on a intruder than to receive any damage itself.

Hang Heavy Wrought Iron Wall Decor

Wrought iron decorations can range from simple to intricate designs.

Wrought iron adds classic beauty to your home, but hanging wrought iron décor can pose some difficulties. The heavy iron makes the decorations more likely to fall and cause damage than some of the lighter alternatives. Falling wrought iron can damage the wall it hangs on, the floor below it and even someone in the wrong place at the wrong time. This shouldn't discourage you from hanging the decorations, because if you know properly hang the wrought iron ornaments they can actually be quite secure. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Pass a stud detector over the wall where you will hang your decorations. Attaching the wrought iron decorations to a wall stud makes them hang more securely, so it is important to know their location instead of just guessing. Mark the location of each stud lightly with a pencil.

2. Examine the back of your wrought iron decor to see if there is a hanging mechanism. If there is not, you will have to hang the decorations using the curves of the artwork to anchor it in place. If there is a hooking mechanism, search for a wall hook that will fit into the mechanism.

3. Screw a decor hook into the wall, securing it to the wall stud. Install it at whatever height you would like to hang the piece of wrought iron decor.

4. Hold the wrought iron decoration against the wall so that either the hanging mechanism or one of curves of the decoration snatches on the hook.

5. Tilt the wrought iron ornament until it sits at the angle you desire.

Decorate With A White Leather Couch And Loveseat

Glass or dark wood coffee tables work well with white leather furniture.

A white leather sofa and loveseat can give a living room a modern or classic look. Using contrasting colors, such as white furniture with dark wood accents, creates a sophisticated and timeless feel. Leather is a very durable material and many people feel it can be overwhelming and masculine. However, there are ways to soften the room by using key accessories and natural materials. Whether you choose to create an all-white modern look or use bold colors in contrast, white leather furniture is a great base for several different decorating styles. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Decide on a decorating style. White leather sofas and loveseats are often used in contemporary homes. Furniture is typically sleek and minimal with a few key accents. White leather furniture can also be used to create a classic look with dark wood and wrought iron accents. As white leather sofas and loveseats come in many shapes, sizes and styles, examine them first to see with which decorating style they would work best. For example, a low back sofa or sofa with a curved back could be used in a modern room.

2. Paint the walls. Some people may prefer to paint the walls white for a clean, modern style. Others may find that to be too drab and prefer to add color. Neutral colors such as tan and grey add soft color to the walls for a classic look. For someone wanting something more bold, bright yellow walls with white furniture and black accessories provides a stunning look.

3. Place the sofa and loveseat in the room. The sofa and loveseat should be placed in an "L" shape, not across from each other. As the loveseat is smaller than the sofa, they would look awkward opposite one another. The sofa should ideally be placed on a longer wall than the loveseat.

4. Add other furniture. For a modern look, use sleek furniture such as glass coffee tables and end tables with a wrought iron base. For a more classic look, use dark wood, such as mahogany for a coffee table and end tables.

5. Finish the look with accessories. The modern look is minimalistic so don't overdo the accessories. Select a key piece of art or figurine to highlight the space. For a more classic look, soften up the room with accent pillows on the sofa and loveseat and a fluffy rug. Natural linen curtains will also help soften the room. Use dark accent pieces to contrast the white furniture. For example, place a dark wood framed mirror above a fireplace or a use wrought iron light fixture.
