Instructions

1. Measure the width of your bed and determine how many additional inches you want on either side. Add at least 2 inches to the width of the bed to make sure the mattress doesn't dwarf the headboard. For an elaborate and eye-catching feature, you may want to add even more.

2. Sit on your bed and determine where you want the top of the headboard to fall behind you. If you want to be able to rest comfortably against it, mark the wall just above your head. If you're looking for a more understated piece, opt for something just 2 or 3 feet tall. Measure the distance from the bottom of your mattress to the mark on the wall where you want the headboard to stop. This will allow you to tuck the board securely behind your bed. If you prefer a headboard that rests on the floor, measure from the floor up.

3. Have a piece of plywood cut to the measurements determined in Steps 1 and 2. Most home improvement stores will cut sheets of plywood for you.

4. Get a piece of foam at least 2 inches thick from a fabric store. If possible, have them cut it to the same size as the plywood. Purchase a piece of batting that measures 1 foot longer and 1 foot wider than the plywood. Select a fabric to cover the headboard and have this material cut to 2 feet longer and 2 feet wider than the plywood.

5. Wash and iron your selected cover fabric for the headboard.

6. Lay the fabric flat on the floor with the front of the fabric facing down. Center the batting on top of the fabric with the edges lined up. Center the foam on the batting and lay the plywood on top of the pile.

7. Wrap the batting securely around the back of the plywood. Use a staple gun to fasten the batting to the wood. Begin with two staples at the center of the top and two at the bottom. Follow with staples in the center of each side. Fold square corners on each corner and secure with additional staples. For large headboards, add staples as needed so you have one staple every 6 to 8 inches.

8. Repeat the previous step with the fabric, stapling the fabric to the plywood just past the spot where the batting is stapled.

9. Screw one side of a flush mount to the back of the headboard in the upper right corner, just past the edge of the fabric. Repeat in the left corner. Line the headboard up with the wall and mark the locations for the opposite side of the flush mounts. Screw the opposite flush mounts to the wall at the marks. Line up and attach the flush mounts to secure the headboard to the wall.

The use of courting candles dates back to the 1600s when fathers used them to set time limits for when potential suitors came to visit their daughters. Hinges typically are mounted to the gate frame before the gate is positioned for installation. Once the gate is accurately positioned and secured between the gate posts, you can attach the hinges to the post in minutes. Instructions

1. Stack scrap wooden planks between the gate posts to hold the gate 2 to 4 inches off the ground. This provides clearance, allowing the installed gate to swing without obstructions. Place the gate onto the wood scraps between the posts. Measure the distance between the gate stiles and the corresponding posts to center the gate. Position the gate so its hinged surfaces are flush with the fronts of the gate posts. Once the gate is centered, push a wooden shim between each of the vertical centers of the gate stiles and the posts.

2. Place a carpenter's level against the front or back of a stile. Tip the top of the gate forward or backward until the gate is plumb in that plane. Place shims between the ends of the top rails and the corresponding posts.

3. Lay the carpenter's level across the top rail of the gate. Raise or lower the lateral sides of the gate until the rail is level. Place shims along the edge of the gate, holding it firmly to the gate posts. With the gate held in position, recheck the rails and stiles to make sure they are level and plumb. Minor adjustments, if necessary, may be made by tapping the gate with a mallet until it is in satisfactory position. Add more shims to hold it securely in place while you mount the hinges to the gate posts.

Instructions

1. Sand all cut edges of the wood to remove any splinters.

2. Lay the 31 1/2 by 48 board on the ground. This will be the back of the bookcase.

3. Place the two 11 1/2 by 48 boards on the back board, one along either 48-inch side, perpendicular to the back board. These will be the sides of the bookcase.

Attach them with wood screws, drilling small holes where the screws will go (called pilot holes) first to prevent the wood from splitting.

4. Attach one of the 11 by 30 boards to the top end of the bookcase (either side is fine) with wood screws. It should be completely enclosed, with only the front edge showing, and should be 1/2 inch shallower than the sides.

You now have a box with a back, two sides and a top.

5. Attach another 11 by 30 board at the bottom with wood screws. It should be attached 3 inches above the floor to give room for a footer.

6. Attach the other three 11 by 30 boards as shelves with wood screws. They should be secured into both sides, and into the back if necessary. Shelves can be spaced according to the height of the items to be stored.

7. Attach the 3 by 30 boards to the front of the top and bottom boards with wood screws. The top board should be flush with the top of the bookshelf and hang down (creating a header), the bottom board will cover the 3-inch gap between the bottom shelf and the floor (creating a footer).

8. Stain the bookshelf with wood stain. Different stains have different procedures and drying times, so be sure you are familiar with the product you are using before you begin.

9. Attach decorative metal corners to the bookshelf with mounting nails.

8. Pass the flame across the metal pieces again. Once the temperature of the filler metal has risen above 800 F, it will melt and fill the joint.

9. Turn off the propane torch. Clean any excess melted filler metal away with a rag before it cures.

Firmly Attach Iron Headboards

Removing The Old Wooden Balusters

1. Cut through the middle of the old wooden balusters using a circular saw. For long handrails you might want to leave a wooden baluster or two in the middle for support until you have some of the new metal balusters in place.

2. Remove the top halves of the wooden balusters from the handrail. The wooden balusters may be glued or nailed into the handrail and require twisting to get them out.

3. Remove the bottom halves of the wooden balusters from the floor or stair tread. Balusters can be attached in a variety of ways including toe-nailing, glued dowels or screwed in with a double-ended baluster screw. You may need to pull or unscrew them.

Drill the Holes

4. Drill the first test hole for the metal balusters. Often metal balusters require different size holes than wooden balusters. 1/2-inch metal balusters require a 3/4-inch hole at the bottom and a 1/2-inch hole at the top.

5. Drill the remaining holes into the handrail. The holes need to be at least 1-1/2 inches deep into the bottom of the handrail.

6. Drill the remaining holes into the stair treads. Holes should be 5/8-inch to 3/4-inch into the tread. It is possible to square up the holes with a chisel and avoid the need to use baluster shoes.

Installing The Balusters

7. Cut the balusters to length using a circular saw or chop saw with a metal cutting blade. Measure the distance from the bottom of the handrail to the top of the stair tread and add 1-3/8 to 1-1/2 inches. Each baluster must be measured separately because they vary in length depending on how far out on the step they are.

8. Remove any burrs on the cut end of the balusters using a grinding wheel or file and test fit your baluster.

9. Prepare the baluster and the holes. Slide the shoe onto the bottom of the balusters and tape it in place to keep it out of your way. Apply epoxy or adhesive to the top and bottom holes.

10. Install the baluster into the hole. Slide the baluster up into the handrail. It should penetrate deep enough to allow you to clear the tread and drop the bottom of the baluster into the hole in the tread. Add any epoxy necessary around the balusters.

11. Remove the tape and drop the shoe into place. Square shoe and baluster up with the tread. Allow the epoxy to dry and tighten the set screw on the shoe.
