For homeowners with steps outside their homes, having railings on the sides of the steps isn't just a good safety feature, your local community may require you to install them. If your staircase is constructed of bricks, you can install iron railings. Iron railings on a brick staircase provide a classic look that many people find appealing. Instructions
1. Place the railings on the steps where they are being installed. Position them so they are equidistant from the edges of the steps.
2. Mark the location where the railings will be bolted to the bricks by marking the bricks with a marker inside the holes in the base of the railings. Take the railings off the steps after they have been marked.
3. Drill pilot holes into the bricks at the spots that you marked with a masonry drill bit.
4. Remove the bolts from the sleeve anchors. Slide the sleeve anchors into the holes, gently tapping them in with a hammer if necessary.
5. Place the railings into position on the steps, lining the holes in the base of the railings over the holes in the bricks.
6. Screw the bolts into the sleeve anchors. Don't overtighten the bolts, or you could break the sleeve anchor.
7. Paint the head of the bolt to match the railing, if desired.
