Refinish Wood & Iron Outdoor Furniture
Outdoor furniture takes abuse from the elements. Patio furniture usually has to be refinished each year to keep it looking its best. Wooden tops peel and crack if not properly protected, and iron bases will rust when exposed to rain and snow. To keep it looking its best, strip off any existing paint from the wooden table top, remove rust from the base and add protective coats to preserve their finishes. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Move the furniture into the middle of your driveway or yard. Using the highest pressure setting on your hose nozzle, spray your furniture to remove any cobwebs and debris. Allow the furniture to dry.
2. Sand the wooden table top using medium-grit sandpaper. To work more quickly use a palm sander, available at most home improvement centers. Remove all of the previous paint or sealant down to the bare wood of the table top.
3. Brush rusted parts of the iron base with steel wool until the rust begins to flake off. Continue using the steel wool until all of the rust is removed.
4. Cover the wooden table top with newspapers and painter's tape. Spray paint the iron base black to cover exposed areas and brighten the iron finish. Allow the paint to dry for 30 to 60 minutes. Remove the newspaper and tape.
5. Use rags to apply an oil-based stain to the wooden table top. Oil bases add color to wooden tops and also protect the table from the elements. Wipe the stain on with a rag, removing excess with another clean rag. For best protection and deepest color, apply two or three coats of stain. Allow the stain to dry completely.
