Jazz up your bedroom by using a canopy over the bed.
King-sized canopy beds can conjure up images of a bygone era when royalty and other noblemen slept in lavishly-furnished bedrooms. Back then, canopies that hung over and about beds were originally meant to provide extra warmth and privacy to the royal owner, who often slept with a servant or attendant in the same suite or room.
This classic bed design is still in use, but unlike the canopy beds of old, today’s designs are created for purely decorative reasons. You can adapt the bed to suit any interior design style you prefer, whether feminine or masculine, youthful or mature. Does this Spark an idea?
Feminine Swag
Change the aura of a room just by draping fabric over your canopy bed. Simply measure and cut the fabric to a size and length that will reach the floor on both sides of the bed when slung from overhead. Be sure to hem the fabric’s cut edges. When draping the fabric, let it sag across the top frame and puddle when it reaches the floor.
Modern Minimalist
For a more masculine or Zen look, get a canopy bed designed with plain, straight lines in a plain solid color, like black. Bed linens and the actual canopy must be equally plain and without printed designs or markings; be sure to use luxurious-looking fabrics.
Beach Resort
The relaxed look of a tropical canopy bed draped in muslin or a sheer fabric can make you feel like you’re in a beach resort. The key to the look is choosing a bed with a Zen-like design and pairing the sheer canopy with bed linens made of airy handmade fabrics or with ethnic Asian or beach prints.
European Colonial
If you can’t decide whether you like the look of a traditional European canopy bed or that of a tropical country, you might like a look that fuses both. King canopy beds that use expensive woods and mix modern lines with designs from old Asian civilizations, achieve a distinctly colonial look reminiscent of British India or French Morocco. You can add a sheer cloth as a canopy, but some poster designs are beautiful enough that it’s best to keep the canopy hanging above rather than draping down to the floor.
Metal Frame
Canopy bed designs made of metal have a wide range of styles, from plain to whimsical, and can cost less than wooden beds. A bed with lovely wrought-iron work is a particularly effective design element for a young woman’s bedroom, and is versatile enough to go well with many different fabrics and styles.
False Canopy Bed
If all you’ve got is a king-sized bed without posters or a top frame, you can still get the sophisticated look of a canopy bed. All you need is yards of sheer fabric, wooden embroidery hoops, self-adhesive Velcro, double-sided tape and metal hooks. Hang a dramatic tropical "mosquito netting" canopy from your ceiling that will envelop your whole bed.
