1. Choose a light and bright wall paint color. A pale yellow or light blue works nicely for a small cottage bedroom, making it cheery and sex-neutral for visitors. Use a white primer and an eggshell finish for a warm and color-correct result.
2. Place a twin or queen-size bed in the center of the room against a wall. A twin or full-size mattress would be a better choice unless you want to accommodate a couple. Then go with a queen if you have room. Do not use a footboard for the bed and you'll save space.
3. Use whitewashed furniture and bed headboard. Whitewashed furniture is very cottage chic and maintains the bright cleanliness of the room. Purchase a small side table and bureau to complete the room.
4. Select bedding. Cottage décor often dresses beds with a floral-themed sheet set and hand-quilted comforter. If you go with floral bedding, don't overdo it. Too much matching floral pattern will make the room look smaller, so use a floral sheet and a less-patterned quilt or comforter. Toss a white throw over the end of the bed to set off the patterns even more.
5. Place a mirror to reflect light from windows in the room. A mirror with a whitewashed frame or a barn wood frame will fit nicely over a bureau or near the doorway.
6. Hang a few short bookshelves around a window or high over the bed to provide additional display space. Add a few vintage cottage items such as a small birdcage, perfume bottles or water pitchers to complete the cottage look.
7. Use white window treatments, choosing between a white sheer curtain and white shutters. Both looks make the room feel cozy and welcoming as well as enhance a dreamy cottage ambiance.
