Creative Ideas For Painting A Child'S Bed

Paint your child's bed to help it fit the bedroom theme.

Painting a child's bed is an easy way to update it, making the bed look new again. The painting technique used can give the bed a youthful look and help it fit into the theme of the child's bedroom. Take time to sand and prime the bed no matter how you decide to paint it. The preparation stages make a big difference in how the bed looks when it is finished. Does this Spark an idea?

Stenciling

Stencils allow you to easily add images to the bed even if you don't feel artistic. Craft stores and home improvement stores sell stencils in a wide variety of patterns and styles. Look for a stencil that matches the overall theme or decorating style of the child's room. One simple idea is to stencil the child's name surrounded by images that relate to the room's design. For example, in a jungle room, surround the child's name with stencils of jungle animals or trees. Stencil the design on the headboard or footboard to decorate the bed. You can either paint the bed a solid color for the background or stencil onto a wood-grain bed. Use flat paint for the stenciling because it will stick the best to the furniture. A layer of polyurethane protects the stenciled design and adds a glossy finish to it.

Color Blocks

Turn the child's bed from boring to bright and colorful by choosing several coordinating colors. Divide the bed into sections, painting each section a different color. If the headboard has spindles, paint each spindle a different color. Repeat the colors in a pattern on the spindles. Paint the edge pieces in different colors. Another option is to paint the headboard, footboard and side pieces each in a different color. Select colors from the room's color scheme. A red, white and blue paint scheme works well for a patriotic or sports-themed room. Pink, white and lavender fits a princess-themed room.

Sponge Painting

Sponge painting is a simple technique that layers two different colors with a youthful look. Paint the bed in a base color. Choose a second contrasting color for the sponge painting technique. Dip a sponge into the second color and press it onto the painted bed. Different sponges create different looks, so experiment to get the look you want. Use colors from the child's room.

Child Painted

To encourage your child's creativity, let him paint his own bed. Give the bed a base coat of paint as the background. Provide the child with paintbrushes and paint in a variety of colors. Let her paint a scene on the headboard or footboard. The child's bed becomes the ultimate child's art display. A similar option is to do the child's handprint on the bed. Paint your child's hand and help him press it onto the bed. Do several handprints in different colors. You can also add one new handprint each year to document the child's growth. Write the year and child's age next to each handprint.
