Use Of Decorative Moss With Plants

Moss can be used in a number of decorative ways.


Asian gardens have used moss to accent their plants over the centuries and moss is now being used in American gardens and as an accent for indoor plants. Because the moss does not have roots and gets its nutrition to from the air, it can grow on surfaces such as logs and rocks as well as on the soil. It provides your plants and gardens with a woodland element adding interest to your landscape. Does this Spark an idea?


Outdoor Gardens


Moss planted between spaces in a garden pathway is attractive.


Decorating your garden with moss adds an element of lush green color and adds interesting texture to your landscape. You can can fill the spaces between the stones or bricks in the you pathway with moss. Cover a featured rock with moss for interest or grow moss on a log as a decorative accent. Moss looks beautiful growing beside a pond or a water feature in your garden. To plant moss, take a clump that you have found in another location. Use a putty knife to ease it off the surface and then tamp it down onto the desired spot in your garden.


Hanging Baskets

Lining a decorative wrought iron planter with sphagnum moss is both decorative and functional. The natural look that it gives your hanging planter is a beautiful accent to your flowers. The moss retains moitsure which is beneficial to your flowers. Fill the planter with the moss and use your fist to tamp down a depression in the center to hold your plants. Add your soil and plants to complete an interesting planter.


Indoor Use


Bring the outdoors into the home by growing moss on the outside surface of terra-cotta containers. Place a handful of live moss into your blender with 2 cups of water and 2 cups of buttermilk. After blending these elements together, use a paint brush to spread the mixture onto the pot. Keep the pot in a shady place and spritz it with water every day for 2-3 weeks. The moss will grow and will add another dimension to your potted plant.


Floral Arrangements


A traditional floral arrangement can be taken a step further by adding sheet moss to the base of the flowers. It gives the arrangement a lush natural look. You can also tuck the sheet moss around the base of potted plants by inserting U-pins through the moss and into the soil. It is reminiscent of a plant that is growing in the wild. Sheet moss glued to a grapevine wreath provides a foundation that has a woodland look or it can be glued to the rims of willow baskets. It is a decorative element that makes your arrangements look natural and unique.
