Wrought iron is a common alternative to nickel because of its sturdy construction and rustic appeal. Wrought iron is a heavy traditional hardware material that can be used for door hinges, door knobs, cabinet handles, chandeliers and light fixtures. Wrought iron is an attractive alternative to brushed nickel if your home has a country, rustic, cottage or Victorian motif.
Brass
Polished brass and antique brass are two alternatives to nickel that can be used for decorating. Polished brass has a lacquer sealant that protects it from tarnishing. If you want a hardware alternative that is luminous, polished brass is a good option. Brass is golden in color, whereas nickel is closer to silver. Stainless Steel
Stainless steel is one of the closest hardware materials to nickel. Both stainless steel and nickel have a bright, silvery appearance; however, brushed nickel is slightly duller than stainless steel. Stainless steel is a popular decorative material because it does not weather, fade or stain over time. If you want to decorate with a modern vibe, select stainless steel accessories to coordinate with your contemporary motif. Chrome
If you want an Art Deco home design, opt for polished chrome. Polished chrome has a silver-polished mirror finish that is ultra-shiny and reflective. If you want a bright sparkly hardware that resembles the silvery hues in nickel, choose chrome. Chrome is long-lasting and holds up well over time, but it does require some maintenance. Be prepared to clean visible fingerprints and dirt off the surface regularly. Purchase chrome faucets, drains, countertop appliances, light fixtures, knobs and handles for a retro Art Deco design.
