Install Picket Fencing On The Veranda

A picket fence makes a great boundary for the edge of the veranda.

Verandas are most commonly made of wood and concrete. Picket fencing can be installed on either, using nearly identical technique, with the exception of the post bracket screws, which must be unique to the installation. Wood floors are best served by treated deck screws while concrete floors require tapcon-style concrete screws. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Mark the corners of the area you wish to fence. Use a chalk line to mark a line along the outside edge of the fence between the two end points. Measure from one corner and use a piece of sidewalk chalk to mark the location of a post at intervals equal to the width of your picket fence panels (typically six or eight feet). If you intend to place the picket panels between the posts, add seven inches to the length of the panel when spacing the marks.

2. Position the 4-by44 fence post surface brackets centered on each mark. Align them so the posts will be properly positioned to support the picket panels. Mark the screw holes in each bracket onto the veranda floor. Mark lightly around the outside edge as well to make realignment easier.

3. Drill pilot holes for each bracket. Use a 1/8-inch wood bit for wood or composite verandas and a 3/16-inch rotary mason's bit for concrete or other masonry surfaces. Realign the post brackets over the newly drilled pilot holes. Drive one screw through each hole in each bracket. Use a 3-inch treated deck screw for wood or composite and a 3-inch tapcon style concrete screws for concrete or masonry. Drive all screws in until the head is flush with the top of the bracket.

4. Cut 4-by-4 fence posts to length. For installing panels on the face of the posts, cut the posts two inches shorter than the top of the panels. For installing panels between posts, cut the posts the same height as the top of the fence panels. Use a circular saw.

5. Set one post in each bracket. Drive one 1 5/8-inch treated deck screw through each hole in the post portion of each bracket to stand it upright firmly. Do this for every post, using a level to check and adjust as needed.

6. Position a panel aligned with the first two posts. For a face mount, drive screws through the panel into the face of the posts with the end aligned in the center of the second post. Screw through the ends of the horizontal rails of the panel into the side of the post to install between posts. Use 3-inch treated deck screws to make the attachment.

7. Continue adding panels one at a time to the end of the veranda.
