Instructions

Make Driveway Gates

1. Dig a post hole 3 feet deep and 2 feet wide on both sides of the driveway. Set one of your 8-by-8 inch posts into a hole and add 1 foot of dirt. Use your foot to compress the dirt around the post to keep it upright. Place the other post into your second hole, add dirt, and compress as before. Use one of your 14-foot boards to line up the facing on the posts. The board should just cover the face of both posts, giving them a distance of 14 feet.

2. Dump 2 bags of concrete mix into each post hole. Add the recommended amount of water. Mix the water and concrete with your shovel. Let the mix set up for 24 hours.

3. Use your saw to cut the 14 foot boards down to measure 13 feet 6 inches. Cut the 8-foot boards down to 6 feet.

4. Lay your 13-foot by 6-inch boards flat on the driveway. Lay two of them 6 feet apart and the third in the middle of those two. These will be the horizontal boards for your gate.

5. Lay a short board across the top of the long boards so that it touches the edge of all three boards. Lay another short board across the other edge. Lay the last 6-foot board across the middle of the three longer boards. Nail the boards together in this pattern using five nails where each board meets another one.

6. Nail one side of your hinges to one of the short boards on your gate. Place them 1 foot from the top and bottom of the gate. Mark a spot 2 feet from the ground on one post. Have someone help you lift and hold the gate as you nail the bottom hinge at this spot, giving you a 1-foot clearance under the gate. Nail the top hinge where it lines up.

7. Nail your hasp to the gate in the middle of the short board opposite the hinges. Line up the other side of the hasp on the post and nail it down. Put your lock on the hasp and now your gate is up and locked.
