A handmade upholstered headboard elevates any bed to a more luxurious status. Padding provides a supple look and a place to lean while reading or sitting up in bed. If you're going to hang the headboard on the wall above the bed rather than securing it to the bed frame, you'll need appropriate brackets. Two-part sliding brackets are heavy-duty enough to secure a headboard to drywall, provided they are screwed into an appropriately sized toggle bolt. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Hold the headboard up to the wall exactly where you want it positioned. Check to see that it's level and mark the wall across the top of the headboard.
2. Measure and mark a spot four inches in from each upper corner and four inches down from each upper corner on the back of the headboard. Fit an electric drill with a screwdriver bit and secure one side of each bracket over the marks on the back of the headboard. Position the bracket so the slides are facing down.
3. Measure and mark the wall four inches in and down from each upper corner; the brackets should line up when the headboard is placed against the wall. Hold the brackets up to the wall and mark each screw hole.
4. Fit an electric drill with a 1/2-inch bit and drill a pilot hole through each of the screw hole marks. Hold one of the toggle bolt toggles flat against the bolt and push the assembly through the hole until the toggle snaps open. Pull the bolt until the toggle is snug against the back of the drywall. Screw the anchor head onto the bolt until it is flush against the wall.
5. Hold the slide bracket up to the anchors and screw the bracket into the anchors, slides facing up.
6. Hold the headboard up to the wall and slide the brackets together. Adjust the position of the brackets along the back of the headboard if they don't line up exactly.
