Placing a fence on top of a retaining wall can provide extra security.
An aluminum fence can provide a measure of security for your home by providing an attractive barrier around your yard. In most cases, the aluminum fence is secured by placing the fence posts inside concrete-filled holes in the ground. If you have a concrete retaining wall along your property line, however, this might not be possible. Instead, you'll have to install the fence on top of the wall. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Make marks on top of the retaining wall to mark the location of the fence posts. Follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding the spacing of the posts.
2. Drill a hole 3 inches wide and 4 inches deep into the retaining wall at each mark with a core drill. You can rent a core drill from an equipment rental business. Wear safety goggles and ear protection when drilling the holes.
3. Insert a fence post into the first hole. Check it for plumb (vertically straight) with a level, and slide shims into the hole between the post and concrete, if needed.
4. Place hydraulic grout into the hole around the post until it's halfway full. Check the post for plumb again, then allow the grout to set for the time specified on the packaging.
5. Remove any shims you placed in the hole, and finish filling it with grout. Set the rest of the posts in the wall, using the same process, and allow the grout to set for the time specified on the package.
6. Install the aluminum fence panels to the posts. The panels are fabricated to replicate wrought-iron fencing, with the advantage of being lighter and cheaper than wrought iron. The fence panels are available in a variety of designs, and can be found at a home improvement store, or at companies that sell fencing and related products. The precise installation process varies by model and manufacturer, so read the instructions provided with the fencing. However, brackets often are included with the fencing that are used to connect the rails on the fence panels to the posts.
