Use the proper tools to weld your flooring.
If you are laying vinyl, linoleum or plastic flooring, you often need to weld the flooring itself or the corners to hold the flooring in place. This adheres the flooring to the subfloor, but it also helps connect floor seams. To do this, you must have the proper tools, and these tools are types of welding equipment. Heat Gun
A heat gun allows you to heat up the flooring so that it sticks. These guns are hand held, and you can purchase them either corded or cordless. You usually have the choice of electric, air or gas heat guns. Gas heat guns generally run on propane gas, while you need an air compressor for air heat guns. To use this tool, insert a tip into the opening at the mouth of the tool, and hold down the "On" button. Run the tip along the seam or the edges of the flooring.
Welding Machine
If you are working on a large area, use a welding machine. These machines operate via a laser beam. The laser works similar to the heat gun, except that you can just aim the beam at the area that you want to weld as opposed to holding the gun over the flooring section. This device is on wheels, allowing you to roll it into place. You must connect this tool to a power cord. Never stand near the laser beam, and do not look directly at it. Always wear goggles when operating this device.
Welding Tip
A high speed welding tip connects to your heat gun, and you use the point of the tool to weld your flooring. This tool has an electrode that moves through the entire length of the tip, and it ends in a very sharp tip. The structure of this tip allows you to quickly weld your flooring. To use this tool, insert it into the heat gun, and wait until the tip is hot. Then run it along your flooring.
Hand Groover
A hand groover slides along your seams, sealing the seams so you can't see them. This is a hand tool with a small tip, which you move along the actual seam. You can use this tool on any type of flooring, but you must heat linoleum first with a hand gun. If not, the chips will clog your hand groover blade. To use this tool, wait until it's hot and then run it along your seam.
