Dark Gothic Bedroom Ideas

Ornate cathedrals are part of the Gothic culture.

The right decor can transform a typical bedroom into a Gothic adventure. The Gothic style dates back to the high and late Middle Ages in France. Large, highly ornate cathedrals were built as Christianity solidified its hold on Europe. Superstitions of vampires and cultist evil inspired Gargoyles, or mythical creatures sculpted in stone, to be placed upon these churches to ward off evil. The modern Gothic lifestyle revolves around the superstitions and icons of this time. When designing a Gothic bedroom, these same icons become decor staples. Does this Spark an idea?

Wrought Iron

Wrought-iron candle holder

During the Gothic period in Europe, iron was hand pounded into many ornamental items including fences, bed frames, wall hangings and candle holders. These items remain popular in modern Gothic culture. For use in the bedroom, consider a wrought-iron poster bed. Large, wrought-iron chandeliers can be used for room lighting. Line one wall with iron candle holders, or place a set on each side of a mirror or large picture. Free-standing candle holders made from the substance may be placed around the room, along with other decorative items including baskets, lamps and light switch covers. For the highly motivated decorator, install a wrought-iron fence around the edges of the room.

Black and Red Velvet

The colors black and red have been associated with Gothic culture and vampires throughout the ages. These color combinations still symbolize the culture. Velvet was part of the fashion trend during the original era. Clothing, furniture and draperies were made from this heavy material. Use the colors and material to make your bedroom Gothic friendly. Use black velvet curtains finished with gray or red lining, edging and tassels on all windows in the room. Combine a black velvet bedspread with red velvet pillows. Drape chairs with reams of red and black combination material. Cover tables, vanities and other furniture tops with the material. Hang Gothic-focused pictures painted on black velvet canvas for the finishing touches.

Protective Room

Gargoyles are considered protective creatures.

The bedroom is often a haven for rest, relaxation and sleep. It is where we forget the rest of the world and feel safe. During the Gothic period, people used crosses, gargoyles and other mythical creatures as protective devices. Use these same pieces to turn your bedroom into a Gothic retreat. Hang ornate crosses on the walls, especially over the bed. Sit large gargoyles in the floor, and hang smaller versions from the top corners of the room. Choose bedding decorated with dragons, crosses or fairies. Consider using candle holders, paintings and other room decorations including crosses and creatures.
