Greek Style Window Treatments

Greek Style Window Treatments

Greek interior design is very much about minimalism and simplicity. In Greece, the clean, uncluttered interior spaces make way for majestic views of the water. Greek window treatments follow along the same philosophy, offering as little distraction as possible. Barely-there window treatments and Old World touches are attractive strategies for a truly Greek window treatment. Does this Spark an idea?

Wooden Shutters

Wooden shutters are extremely popular window treatments in Greece. Though blue is the iconic Grecian color, there are many other colors that would work. For true simplicity, wooden shutters can be painted to match the wall color. White-on-white color themes are very reminiscent of Greek villas. Dark wooden shutters are also a nice option. Warm reds, yellows and rust colors can be painted onto wooden shutters, as long as you flood the room with neutrals elsewhere. Minimalism is extremely important in Greek interior design.

Stained Glass

Bare windows installed with subtle stained glass panels make for an attractive Grecian window treatment. To accomplish this look, stick to light shades of yellow, amber, green and blue. It's nice to alternate clear, untouched glass panels with stained ones to reduce visual clutter. For this reason, consider utilizing glass paint to add a block of color here and there without committing to a true stained glass window. Simplicity is the key to making it cohesive with Greek interior design.

Sheer Drapes

Sheer white drapes make for an easy and affordable Greek window treatment. Curtains of white voile are a nice, earthy option for a more casual design. For more elegant rooms, install sheer white drapes made of a silky fabric. Use a streamlined wrought iron curtain rod without too much embellishment. This Greek window treatment works when the curtain and rod are crisp and uncomplicated.

Arched Windows

Many windows in Greece are set inside arched recesses. To recreate the feeling of an arch to a rectangular window, hang a half circle shaped design element at the top of the window. A finished wood panel in the shape of a half circle is particularly nice and can be painted to match shutters or furniture. Consider, too, a decorative wrought iron feature in the same shape. To achieve the look of an actual arched window, trick the eye by adding an arch-shaped window frame to the top interior of the window and fill it with blue stained glass.
