Ideas On Decorating A Table

Tabletop decorations finish a room's design.

No matter which room a table is located in, the top of it can offer you a chance to bring decor to your room easily. From your dining table to bedside end table, a few simple items allow you to add a touch of personality to your home. These touches can "finish off" a room's design while giving visitors a chance to know you better. Does this Spark an idea?

Dining Room and Kitchen

Simple touches on a dining table create a welcoming atmosphere.

Two of the favorite rooms in your home are the dining room and the kitchen. Both contain tables that can be decorated to enhance the style of the room. The kitchen table can contain a wicker basket of fruit or a low vase filled with flowers in colors that match the kitchen decor. A decorative set of salt and pepper shakers in front of a wrought iron napkin holder can give a "cafe" feel to the room if desired.

The dining room not only has the formal table but often will include a buffet or sideboard that can be decorated as well. When not in use, the table can be enhanced with a seasonal centerpiece or a simple arrangement of candles in different sizes. The sideboard top should also be decorated simply, reflecting the room color and style. A selection of vases filled with nuts or colored stones gives a touch of natural elegance.

Living Room

Create a lived in look by placing a few personal items on tables.

Living rooms contain a number of tables that can be decorated to complete the look you want. Coffee tables are low and resting in front of the sofa and can contain a selection of magazines as well as a low basket or bowl filled with natural elements like pinecones or dried flowers. End tables hold lamps along with a favorite book or two or some small items of interest. A long, narrow table stretched behind a sofa can carry a large floral arrangement or statuary that then becomes a focal point in the room. Placing items on these tables doesn't make the room cluttered but creates a "lived-in" feel.

Bedroom

Add a few favorite knickknacks to the top of a dresser.

Even the bedroom can benefit from decorating the tops of tables and dressers. While the bedroom is inherently a very personal room, adding just a few favorite knickknacks or colored glass to the top of a dresser and a small vase of flowers next to the bed provides a feeling of comfort and escapism.

Holidays

Holiday table decorations should be low so guests can converse over them.

Tables are a good place to start any holiday decorating. The dining table especially deserves special attention if you are hosting a family gathering. Keep the table decor low so that your guests can easily converse with each other. Simple decorations that tie the entire table together work best. For example, the perfect Christmas decor could include a dark red tablecloth set with gold chargers at each place would be enhanced with an evergreen bough filled with small ornaments and a few votive candles. Echo these decorations on the sideboard as well as in the living room space.
