Iron Baluster Installation

Mix more than one style of iron baluster for a sophisticated staircase.


Create a sophisticated staircase with the addition of iron balusters. These balusters come in a variety of styles; mixing styles gives you an expensive and custom look. Mix and match more than one style of iron baluster. By knowing install the iron balusters yourself, you save the cost of installation while keeping the high-end look of a custom staircase. Count your balusters and create your design before you order your iron balusters, and keep your design handy so you know what baluster to install next. Does this Spark an idea?


Instructions


1. Take out your current balusters. Cut them in half with a jigsaw and rotate them until they come loose. Pull out any nails with pliers and clean inside the holes at the top and bottom with sandpaper.


2. Decide the size of your iron baluster by measuring from inside the top hole to inside the bottom hole. If your iron baluster has a design in the middle, cut equal amounts off of the top and bottom of the iron baluster so the design remains centered. Use a band saw to cut the iron balusters to the correct size.


3. Place a dab of epoxy in both holes and slide the iron baluster in place. Tape the baluster in position, making sure it's straight. Use low-tack painter's tape to hold it straight. If you have caps on the top or bottom of your baluster, tape them out of the way of the epoxy so they don't get glued in the wrong position. Let the balusters dry overnight.


4. Take off the tape and position your caps. Screw them into place to finish your baluster installation.
