Cast iron cookware is extremely durable, versatile, and easy to maintain. It comes in a variety of styles, including grill pans, which feature raised ridges and make it easy to grill during the colder months. What is Cast Iron
Cast iron is a type of iron alloy that is too brittle to be wrought because of the presence of carbon, so it must be shaped by pouring it into a mold.
Preparing Cast Iron for Use
Cast iron grill pans must be seasoned before they are used. To season a pan, apply a thin layer of oil all over the pan, both inside and out. Heat your oven to 300 degrees, placing a piece of foil on the bottom to catch any dripping oil, and place your pan on the top rack, upside down. Cook for an hour, turn off the oven, and let the pan cool in the oven.
Using Cast Iron on the Grill
Since cast iron can withstand high heat, it is suitable to use on a gas grill. Simply place the pan on the grates as you would on an indoor stove burner and bring the heat up slowly.
Benefits of Grilling With Cast Iron
Using a cast iron grill pan on a gas grill means you are able to cook a wider variety of foods outdoors. Smaller food pieces will not fall through the grates, and you can even prepare sauces on the grill using your pan.
Warning
Exercise the same caution you would when using your cast iron grill pan indoors: never pick a hot pan off the grill with bare hands and be sure that you do not over cook the food. Do not use soap to clean your cast iron grill pan, as soap removes the seasoning.
