Making a wooden baker’s rack is one project with which beginning woodworking hobbyists can sharpen their woodworking skills. One of the reasons why this is a good project for beginners is because it doesn’t require the use of expensive power tools to get the job done. This means that if you don’t have many saws or tools, you can still get this job done. Another reason is because even if they don’t make the most beautiful rack, it will still be very useful.
Instructions
1. Build a wooden box frame using two of the 2-foot by 2-foot planks and two of the 2-foot by 2-foot boards. Drill a 1-inch screw into each corner of the frame from the outside of the boards into the edges of the planks. The frame will measure 2.5-feet wide by 2-feet tall by 2-feet deep.
2. Attach a 6-inch by 6-inch block to each corner of one of the 2.5-foot by 2-foot faces of the frame so that the frame sits on the blocks. To attach the blocks, drill a 1-inch screw from the inside of the frame, down into the center of each of the blocks.
3. Insert a 2-foot by 2-foot plank into the wooden box frame, parallel to the other two planks and 1-foot away from each of them. Attach this plank to the frame by drilling two 1-inch screws from the outside of the frame, into the each of the edges of the plank.
4. Attach two 2-foot by 1-foot planks to the outside of the frame, on the 2.5-foot by 2-foot face opposite the blocks. Each of the 2 x 1-foot planks should be flush with the 2-foot edges of the frame, parallel to the boards but perpendicular to the planks of the frame. Attach the pieces by drilling two 1-inch screws from the inside of the frame into the edges of the planks.
5. Attach one 2-foot by 1-foot plank to the two 2 previous 2 x 1-foot planks on the end opposite the frame. This plank should be perpendicular to the previous planks of the same size but parallel to the larger planks of the frame. Attach the pieces by drilling two 1-inch screws in through the outside of the first planks into each of the edges of this plank. You now have a wooden baker’s rack that has four shelves: two of them enclosed in the frame, two of them outside of the frame; three of them 2-feet wide and 2-feet deep, and one of them 2-feet wide and 1-foot deep.
6. Rub all of the wooden surfaces of the wooden baker’s rack with sandpaper until the wood is smooth, and then brush on a thin coat of wood stain. The wood stain will protect the wood and also give it a nice finish.
