Collecting scrap metal can be a great source of bringing in an extra income, aluminum, copper, and brass a worth quite a bit these days. 1. The simplest way to get scrap metal is to save your aluminum cans ( below is a link to an article on recycling cans for money ) crush them and place them in bags for easy storage.
2. Construction sites are loaded with copper, Wire scraps and pieces of copper tube left over from electricians and plumbers will be lying all over the place, be sure to get permission from the head foreman before entering a construction site. Often just asking nicely can yield you a truckload of copper !
3. Brass is also a high paying scrap metal, My number one source for brass is public gun ranges. I go at dusk when everybody is done shooting and pick up the empty brass casings ( i also know people who reload ammunition, so certain calibers i will clean and sell to them ) Be sure not to get in anybody' s way while picking up the empty casings.
4. Another good way to get free scrap metal is to put an add on craigslist or in your local paper for scrap removal, a lot of people have scrap metal lying around and don't know that its worth anything, they will be happy for you to get it out of their way, you can even charge a small fee for this and double your money. People have paid me to take their aluminum siding and old metal sheds !
5. Keep an eye out while driving too, the side of the road can be a gold mine for scrap metal, old catylitac converters that fell off somebody's exhaust contain platinum , ( platinum is worth more than gold ) Also watch what people put out on garbage night, old appliances can be taken apart and stripped for their copper and other valuable scrap metals.
