Choose Iron Gates & Railings

Iron railings and gates add a touch of style to your decor.

Iron gates and railings add a nice element to your indoor or outdoor areas. Indoor iron railings are a suitable option for staircases and upper-level floors where a barrier is needed to prevent someone from falling to the area below. Outdoor iron railings can line decks, porches, patios and sidewalks, or they can be used as fencing around the yard. Iron gates provide a functional finishing touch that lets you go in and out of a certain area. Once you decide that you want the beauty of ironwork in your area, you will have to choose the products you want. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Decide on the type of iron you want for your project. You can choose wrought iron, which is usually expensive and suitable for outdoor projects. Cast iron is another option, which is usually less expensive than wrought iron and is suitable for both indoor and outdoor projects. Other options, such as iron-plated metal or concrete, are sometimes available.

2. Consider what decorative accents you want for the railing or gate. Some iron railings and gates have wooden accents that add warmth and style to the item. For example, some stair railings have a cherry handrail with iron balusters.

3. Choose the color iron you want for your project. Most iron gates and railings are white or black, however, other colors are usually available as part of a custom order.

4. Look at the ironwork patterns available. Generally, simple patterns like straight bars are usually less expensive than intricate patterns. When you choose the ironwork pattern, consider the look of the area where you are placing the railing or gate. If you have an informal space, intricate ironwork may look out of place, while simple ironwork may look out of place in a formal area.

5. Ask about the installation costs involved. Even if you plan on installing the railings and gates, you will still need installation supplies, such as bolts to secure the pieces and concrete to support the bolts for outdoor projects.
