Decorate a Boy's Room in Americana
Americana refers to the historical American culture during the earliest foundation of the United States, including its cultural aspects like apple pie, baseball, the star-spangled banner, Uncle Sam and especially American folk art. Americana décor is patriotic with the main colors being red, white, and blue. Typical Americana décor contains many rustic elements, country charm and American farmhouse accents typical of American traditions, particularly dating from 1776 and the Colonial era. Americana is a popular decorating motif for young boys because of the strong masculine colors and symbols.
Instructions
1. Use the patriotic colors of red, white and blue often. Paint the walls a bright blue or put up "stars and stripes" wallpaper. Curtains imprinted with stars are also a great decorative detail. Blue is a decorative color that is much loved by young boys.
2. Furnish the room with wooden chests, drawers, desks, bookshelves, bed frames and chairs. Twig and log furniture is a major element of Americana as it evokes historical nostalgia---think of Abraham Lincoln's log cabin, for example.
3. Decorate the walls with a Colonial-era rendition of the American flag, vintage posters from World War I and World War II, country wall clocks, log shelves and folk art paintings or murals. Nautical elements like anchors, sailors' knots, ship-in-a-bottle, carved lighthouse statuettes, fishnets and lanterns are also popular, and perfect for little boys interested in sailing and marine life.
4. Cover the bed with patchwork quilts and gingham bedsheets, throws and pillow covers to highlight elements of American farmhouse décor. Checked fabrics are representative of farmhouse Americana, while patchwork is a major element in Colonial Americana.
5. Fill the room with Americana paraphernalia like red, white and blue birdhouses, woven baskets, wrought iron candle holders, candle lamps, wood-carved statuettes of rocking horses or Uncle Sam, spindles, lots of golden and red and blue stars. Boys will love the throwback to a more historical era because of its many masculine accents.
