Retro and vintage decor refers to styles that were popularized in past decades, typically from the 1940s through the 1970s. Choose a retro style for your bedroom when you want a cool decor style that has survived over time. Colors
There are many ways to use color in a retro and vintage room. For example, choose bright colors such as hot pink, electric blue or neon green for a psychedelic 1960s bedroom. Or, choose simple black and white, which was popular in many retro homes. Another cool look for a bedroom could be colors popularized in the 1950s. Think about '50s kitchens and use colors such as avocado green or mustard yellow. Use these colors on the walls or paint the walls in a neutral shade and let the colors come out in the bedding and accessories.
Furniture
Choose retro furniture for your bedroom. Shop at secondhand stores, estate sales and antique shops for furniture that was made during the style decade that you love. If those items are hard to find or are too expensive for your budget, look for new furniture that is made in a vintage style. If you want the new furniture to look like things you found, don't buy an entire bedroom set in one style or from one store. Choose a wrought iron bed frame, a sleigh bed or a low platform bed, depending on your personal retro style. Choose brightly colored mod furniture or chunky dark wood furniture.
Accessories
Once the basics of your room are decided, bring your style home with accessories. Attach antique knobs or drawer pulls to the wall and use them to hang things such as your bathrobe. Antique perfume bottles, hand mirrors and brushes look great situated on top of a vanity or desk. Go with retro-looking lamps, whether you choose a simple oval lamp in a color that matches your room's decor or a lava lamp if you are designing a psychedelic '60s room. Choose bedding in a shade that coordinates with the rest of your room and accent the bed with pillows from the era you like best.
