Make A Windowless Room Appear Light

Decorating a windowless room doesn't have to equal TLC-inspired faux-window drapery or cheesy mural paintings of a French sidewalk cafe. Keep your ideas simple and fresh by incorporating some of the following steps in order to bring your dark space to life. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Start with a fresh coat of paint. Keep your color palette light. While white can do wonders to create a bright, airy and clean feel, other light neutrals in the pastel pink or yellow families do the trick as well. If these colors bring to mind Easter eggs and baby showers, survey cool colors (cool, blue tones versus warm, orange ones) in the paint department of your local home improvements store.

2. Bring the outside in with fresh flowers and plants. Plants give a sense of life and vitality, which is often missing in a windowless room. Move the plants to a sunny spot when no one is around to enjoy them. Or, if you are decorating for a special occasion, simply let them go until they have served their cheery purpose.

3. Clean the room from top to bottom. Fluff couch cushions and pillows, wipe down baseboards, give the floors a scrub or polish and remove the clutter.

4. Accessorize with lamps and mirrors. Bring in interesting lamps of all sizes, such as floor lamps, Tiffany-style lamps and night lights. Pair the lighting with mirrors to create even more light through reflection.

5. Install an attractive ceiling fan. When the fan blows air, it gives the feel of a breeze from an open window. Choose a fan with a lighting feature to enhance available lighting.

6. Furnish the room with one solid, anchor piece of furniture, like a plush sofa or a sleigh bed. Fill in with lighter pieces of varying heights, such as bar stools, a wicker armchair or a wrought-iron shelf.
