Make A Canopy For A Daybed

Use flowing drapes to create an inviting atmosphere around the daybed.

Take an ordinary daybed and give it a dramatic makeover with a canopy. Whether you wish to make a canopy for an outdoor daybed for patio lounging, or to top a daybed in your home, a canopy will dress up the daybed with modern appeal. Choose fabrics to match existing decor or to create a contrast for best results. Does this Spark an idea?

Wooden Frame

Design a frame for the canopy in the same type of wood used for the frame of the daybed. Decide how tall you want the canopy to be in proportion to available space. If the daybed will be used outdoors, the canopy can reach as high up as you want. However, if you build it too high you will have to make custom drapes for the canopy. Four posts held together with several cross supports at each end is a general design you can customize to your own preference. Affix the posts to the existing frame. You may wish to install beams across the top for hanging lanterns, patio lights or a chandelier.

Posts

For a wrought iron daybed, build a canopy with four posts. Have decorative posts made and installed by a welder for best results. For an ornate daybed, design simple posts for the canopy. If the daybed design is basic, create a plan with decorative details running up the posts. Have the welder install hooks at the top of each post for hanging the canopy. Drape swathes of sheer white fabric from one post to the next to create a dreamy canopy for the daybed.

Hanging Fabric

If your daybed is not a candidate for modification, build a canopy with a series of curtain rods. One rod attached to the ceiling allows you to thread a length of fabric through with an even overhang on each side. Arrange the fabric to rest on either end of the daybed for a casual approach. Another idea is to build into the wall behind the daybed. Use reclaimed wood, and affix a length that matches the length of the daybed, so that it juts out from the wall. Place one on either side of the daybed. Mount decorative hooks along the bottom edge to attach the drapes. Complete the look by draping the daybed with a length of fabric that will rest on the reclaimed wood.

Other Ideas

Another idea is to build a cornice box above the daybed to hide drapery hardware. Build a decorative box with a fabric that will complement the existing decor of the room and pair it with a solid set of drapes. For instance, a damask-patterned cornice box paired with sheer black or white drapes will create a modern canopy for a daybed. Work with the existing style of the room. A white room with flecks of bold color will look best with a white scheme for a canopy. Include a graphic pattern on the cornice box to add a jolt of color, such as a coral pattern on white or a chunky stripe with cerulean, cherry, lime and fuchsia.
