Outdoor Fencing Styles

Chain-link fences aren't allowed in some communities.

Outdoor fencing styles vary by taste, purpose and personal creativity. Fences are usually meant to designate property borders, but they're also useful for separating areas within a property. There are fence styles meant to create a certain look or impression, reduce sights or noise, or keep your pets safe and secure. The outdoor fence style you choose will depend on your personal needs and tastes. Does this Spark an idea?

Lattice Panels

Attaching lattice panels to posts creates an attractive look and a semi-private feel. Lattice panels can be purchased in unfinished wood such a cedar, or you can buy finished and painted lattice for a more sophisticated look. Adding finials to the posts between the lattice panels is an elegant finishing touch.

Wrought Iron

Wrought-iron fences evoke feelings of timeless class and strength. Usually seen fencing old or historic properties, wrought iron is often seen as antique and nostalgic. The solidness of a wrought-iron fence gives the impression of stability and wealth as well, so when you want a fence that's particularly impressive, wrought iron is an ideal choice.

Two Rail

A two-rail fence is a simple fence meant to designate borders. Two upright wooden posts are spaced several feet apart with two horizontal posts connecting them. Generally the lower horizontal post is about knee high, and the upper is roughly hip high. Two-rail fences are usually rustic looking and are quite attractive alongside the driveway or yard, or bordering a wildflower field.

Chain Link

Chain-link fences are primarily used as security fences. Sometimes they're meant to prevent someone from entering a property, and other times they're meant to prevent animals such as dogs from getting out. Chain-link fences are considered an eyesore in some communities, however, so there are sometimes restrictions or ordinances that disallow their use.

Privacy Fence

Wood slats or boards placed side by side create an attractive privacy fence that also helps reduce sound from neighbors and nearby streets. Privacy fences can be designed in several styles that make them attractive as well as practical. Some privacy fences, for example, include lattice as the top one to two feet to soften the fence's appearance and create more visual interest.
