Stepbystep Instructions On Install A Fence

A fence adds privacy to your home.

There are several types of fencing available---chain link, vinyl and wood. Wood fences are the most popular style and are sold in prefabricated pieces that make installation easy. In an afternoon you can install a beautiful wood fence in your yard. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Contact your local utility company at 888-258-0808 to have any utility lines in your yard buried.

2. Dig the first posthole. Start the posthole by making a 10-inch-wide circle with a shovel. Use a posthole digger to dig the hole 32 inches deep. Use a digging bar to remove any large rocks that block your path.

3. Place a post in the hole. Shovel soil around the post until it reaches 8 inches from the bottom of the hole. Place a level along the side of the post to ensure it is even. Use a tamping bar to tightly compact the soil around the pole and hold it in place. Place 8 more inches of soil into the hole. Use the tamping bar to compact the soil. Repeat until the hole is filled.

4. Use a small nail or tack to attach a mason line 5 inches above the ground on the front of the first pole. Use a measuring tape to measure the length between the first post and the first corner of the fence line, which will determine the location for your second fence post. Mark the first corner of the fence line by placing a stake in the ground. Wrap the mason line tightly around the stake.

5. Measure the distance of the first fence panel. Use the measuring tape to measure the length of the fence panel. Measure a spot in the ground from the first post to the end length of the fence panel. Place a screw in the ground to mark the spot.

6. Put the first fence panel in place. Position the fence panel so the bottom is 2 to 5 inches off the ground and the top is level. Use an electric screwdriver to screw 2½-inch-long screws through the fence panel and into the fence post to connect the two pieces.

7. Place a wooden wedge on the other end of the fence panel to keep it in the upright position.

8. Install the second fence post.

9. Use an electric screwdriver to screw 2 ½-inch long screws through the top and bottom of the fence panel and post, securing them together.

10. Install the first gate post. Start the gate post by making a 10-inch-wide circle with a shovel. Use a posthole digger to dig the hole 32 inches deep. Use a digging bar to remove any large rocks that block your path.

11. Place a gate post in the hole. Fill the hole following the same instructions for the fence post hole.

12. Use an electric screwdriver and 2½-inch long screws to secure the first gate panel to the last installed fence panel.

13. Measure the width of the prefabricated gate piece. Mark this measurement on the ground starting at the first gate post and ending where the second gate post will be placed.

14. Install the second gate post.

15. Install the next fence panel using an electric screwdriver and 2½-inch screws to secure the panel to the second gate post.

16. Place two wooden wedges under the gate panel to position it inside the gate posts, ensuring the gate panel is even with the fence panels.

17.Use a screwdriver to screw the hinges of the gate panel to the gate posts.

18. Use a hammer to nail the gate caps on top of the gate posts.
