Clean Outdoor Glider Swings

Since outdoor glider swings are essentially rocking benches mounted on a fixed base, dirt and grime can build up over time. Glider swings are typically made of wood, metal or a combination of the two, and some models may also have plastic arm rests or seats. Like most other forms of outdoor furniture, swing gliders can easily be washed with soap and water and rinsed off with a garden hose. However, certain types of wood stains or surface finishes may require additional cleaning steps. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Wash painted or stained wood with mild soap and warm water, using a soft cloth or sponge. Rinse thoroughly with a hose. Dry the wood thoroughly with a lint-free cleaning cloth.

2. Clean plastic parts with a mild detergent and warm water. Scrub away stubborn stains with a nonabrasive powdered cleaner. Remove any mildew stains with a bleach solution of one part liquid bleach to nine parts water. Rinse thoroughly with a hose. Allow the plastic to dry completely, and then polish it with car wax and a lint-free cloth.

3. Clean cast iron or wrought iron parts with warm water and mild soap. Rinse thoroughly with a hose. Dry the metal with a cleaning cloth. Inspect the coating for cracks, and touch it up with rustproof exterior paint if needed. Apply a protective coating of car wax or spray wax, using a lint-free cloth, once the paint is dry.

4. Wash aluminum parts gently with warm water and mild soap. If the aluminum is discolored, clean it with a 50-50 solution of distilled white vinegar and water. Retouch scratches on powder-coated aluminum with paint designed for outdoor use on such surfaces. Allow the paint to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions. Rub the metal with car wax to protect it from moisture.

5. Brush dust and dirt from cushions, and then wash them with warm water and mild detergent. Remove mildew stains with a plastic scrub brush and a bleach solution of 1 cup of liquid bleach to 3 gallons of water. Rinse the cushions with plenty of cool water from the hose. Stand the cushions on edge, and let them air-dry completely. Store them in a dry location to prevent mold and mildew.
