Use Metal Patio Furniture Indoors

Soften metal patio furniture with a cushion or pillow when placing it inside the home.

Mixing up furniture styles, color palettes and fabric patterns is completely acceptable in a home's interior. This "mix-it-up" style of decorating can include using metal patio furniture inside the home. Although a challenging design choice, when well-executed the results can be surprisingly warm and inviting. The process is not much different than planning an interior design around traditional furniture choices. Choosing the right type of metal patio furniture, however, is an important element to pay attention to. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Choose metal patio furniture created in a style that matches your interior. For example, vintage style metal patio furniture from the 1950's such as the "shell back" or the "motel lawn chair" make a great addition to contemporary interiors focused on bright color and geometric patterns. In the right colors, such as pink, white or green, the 1950's lawn chair can make a great accent piece in a cottage style interior. However, they should generally be avoided in traditional interiors of wood furniture and dark colors.

2. Use patio furniture that makes sense. For example, when using metal patio chairs around a dining table, choose a style without arms and stay away from arm chairs, swivel chairs or chair styles that do not allow the user to eat comfortably or that cannot be pulled up to the table correctly.

3. Place the patio furniture sparingly or make it the only furniture in the room. For example, use a single piece of patio furniture for its odd shape or color as an accent near a door or alongside an equally interesting piece of furniture like a sideboard or hutch. On the other hand, a garden room or cozy reading area looks great when a matching patio set of chairs, love seat and table are the only furniture used. Add a rug, lamp, floral arrangement or other accessories to anchor the furniture set.

4. Choose the right visual weight for the room. For example, wrought iron patio furniture in a curvy and highly decorated Victorian style does not visually belong in a room full of masculine, heavy wood.

5. Use cushions or pillows to soften the metal frames. Replace cushions that were purchased with the furniture and choose a fabric pattern or color that works with the room's decor. Use the pillows and cushions that came with the patio furniture as patterns for new cushions and pillows. Take measurements of the original pillows and use the dimensions to purchase or make new ones.

6. Use floor protection where needed. Felt and vinyl pads placed under each leg can keep the rough surface of the metal furniture from scratching floors. Check hardware and home improvement stores for the pads.
