Can I Put a Mattress on a Metal Bedframe Without a Boxspring?
Mattresses are typically sold with a matching box spring, a covered wooden frame with rigid springs, to provide support to the mattress and evenly distribute the weight to keep the mattress in top condition. Mattress Protection
Most mattresses are designed to be used with a box spring or another foundation. New mattresses are typically sold with a matching foundation that is designed to evenly distribute the weight of the mattress and absorb some of the stress that the mattress sustains in normal use.
Metal Bed Frames
The typical metal bed frame only has side rails, which will definitely not hold the mattress up. Queen and king bed frames will usually have a center rail, as well, for additional support. This will hold up a mattress without box springs, but it will put a huge quantity of stress on it.
Some types of metal bed frames are marketed as being able to be used without a box spring. Most have a system of metal rails and curved metal support that eliminate the need for a box spring. The advantage of a bed frame that does not need a box spring is that the frame, instead of being at a level just six to 10 inches above the ground to leave space for the box spring, sits much higher, usually about 16 inches above the ground. That way the mattress can be at a normal height but you'll have more than a foot of storage below it.
Mattress Warranty
If you purchased a new mattress with a warranty, check the conditions of the warranty before opting for a bed frame without a box spring. Sometimes the warranty will be invalidated or ineligible for full coverage if you do not use your mattress with the matching foundation. This is because the mattress may sustain undue stress or damage when it is used on a metal bed frame or another surface rather than its box spring or foundation.
