Country Fence Styles

A country style fence has charming appeal.

A country fence should complement your home's architectural style. The right fence can add visual appeal, charm and character to the yard and garden. A fence serves other important functions such as property line demarcation, privacy and to contain children or pets. There are many different types of country-style fences including picket, split rail and log. Does this Spark an idea?

Picket Fence

This wood fence is suited for a cottage-style house and looks beautiful in the garden. There are many different types of pickets to choose from such as the flat top, dog ear, Gothic, French Gothic and pointed top. There are also many styles of posts. You can paint a picket fence any color but white is the traditional choice. This style of fence is also available in vinyl to cut down on maintenance, painting and wear from the elements.

Split Rail

The wood split rail fence is perfect for a country style, ranch or farm home. These fences are durable and look best in the countryside. This fence has two or three evenly spaced rails connected to vertical posts. The best wood for a split rail fence is Western Red Cedar.

Log Wood Fence

This type of fence is rugged and works well with a rustic, country home. Rough-hewn logs attach to crossed posts in a variety of patterns.

Zigzag Rail

You can usually find these fences in rural settings around farmhouses. They have been in existence since Colonial times. Interlocking horizontally stacked rails follow a zigzag pattern around the property line.

Stone

Stone walls are the oldest style of fencing or boundary markers. They provide a country feel in the garden and are suitable for traditional homes, cottages and farms. It's advantageous to build stone walls from stone gathered locally. Held together by gravity, dry-stacked stone walls are another way to build this type of wall.

Wrought Iron or Metal Fences

Wrought iron fences suit country style as well as Victorian and contemporary homes. There are many different types of wrought-iron fences from ornate to modern. They are extremely durable due to their metal construction and anti-rust coatings.

Vinyl Fencing

Vinyl fencing is a maintenance-free type. It's available in picket, rail and other styles. The advantages of vinyl fencing are having the look of the fence you want without the worry of rot, fading, warping and other negative effects of sun and weather.
