Estimate Elestrostatic Painting For Metal Railings

Electrostatic paint creates a high-gloss, highly durable finish.

The electrostatic painting offers both a painter and a customer a wide variety of benefits. The electrostatic painting process electrically charges the paint and charges the painted surface with the opposite electrical charge. As a result, as the paint is sprayed, it's electrically attracted to the painted surface, resulting in a fast-drying, highly durable finish. Electrostatic paints also offer increased coverage rates when compared to traditional spray painting methods.

Instructions

1. Measure the amount of railing to be painted as if the railing was a continuous surface. For example: if a section of railing is 3 foot tall by 16 feet long, recorded this area as 48 square feet. If both sides of the railing will be painted, double the measurement. In this example, the total square feet requiring paint is 96 square feet.

2. Evaluate the coverage ratio of the electrostatic paint. Most electrostatic paints are designed to cover 350 to 425 square feet per gallon.

3. Calculate the electrostatic paint coverage with the following equation. Painting with electrostatic equipment offers the painter a 70 percent efficiency. In other words, a gallon of electrostatic paint will cover [(350 to 425) x .7] square feet. In other words, a gallon of electrostatic paint will cover 245 to 300 actual square feet per gallon.

4. Divide the measured total square footage of the railing by 300 square feet per gallon to obtain the actual estimated paint usage. In the above example, one third of one gallon of electrostatic paint would apply one coat of paint to the measured railing.
