Patio Decor

Different kinds of outdoor decor are available to create a beautiful patio.

A patio allows you to enjoy the outdoors with the amenities of your home. Make your patio a relaxing and inviting space by decorating it with furniture and accessories made to be used outdoors. The right decorations for your patio can transform it into a stylish space that's warm, inviting and comfortable even during the warmer months. Does this Spark an idea?

Planters

Outdoor planters come in dozens of different shapes, sizes, colors and materials, including earthenware, concrete, recycled plastic, wood, high-grade polyethylene, copper and wrought iron. Planters can come in the form of flower pots, square or rectangular boxes, stands, tiered planters and even L-shaped planters. There's no right or wrong type of planter to use as part of your patio decor; the planters that you choose are a matter of personal preference. Some plants that grow well in planters include verbena, hibiscus, basil and fuchsia.

Furniture

Various styles of patio furniture are made of different materials that are suitable for outdoor use. Patio furniture is usually made of wrought iron, teak, cedar, rattan, wicker or PVC. For a more casual look, furniture made of wicker or teak is usually used. Formally styled seating is usually made of wrought iron; the formality of an outdoor patio also depends on whether you use full-sofa sets or just one or two chairs or a bench. Some all-weather furniture pieces that you may want to set on your patio include dining sets, benches, loveseats and settees. Cushioned patio furniture is usually made from fabric suitable for the outdoors; such fabrics repel water and resist chlorine and soil stains.

Lighting

Different kinds of lighting may be used for a patio depending on your preference. For example, if you wish to give your patio a whimsical look, you may want to hang strings of lights, lanterns or paper lamps on tree branches. Alternatively, you may prefer the bright light shed by outdoor floor lamps or built-in floor lights. Dim lights instead of bright, white florescent lights may be used in a patio for a relaxing ambiance. Using candles instead of electrical lights is another way to add ambiance to a patio.

Accessories

Add a finishing touch to your patio by decorating it with accessories specifically made for the outdoors. Depending on the size of your patio, you may want to place a hammock or an outdoor fire pit on it. Other accessories you can decorate your patio with are an all-weather area rug, a waterfall, outdoor privacy screens, outdoor clocks and thermometers; if you don't already have a table with an umbrella, a free-standing cantilever umbrella can add a bit of shade to your day outdoors.
