Decorating Ideas For A Traditional Master Bedroom

Tradtional bedrooms are simple and elegant.

Traditional-style decorating creates a space that is calming and relaxing, where there are no unexpected elements to distract the eye from the understated elegance of the room. Decorating the master bedroom in a traditional style will create a peaceful place to recover from a long, hard day. Does this Spark an idea?

Flooring

One of the most important decisions in decorating a traditional-style bedroom is choosing the flooring. Since one of the characteristics of traditional-style decorating is the use of warm, rich wood, hardwood flooring is one option. Choose a hardwood in a medium wood tone like cherry or mahogany to set the stage for the rest of your decor. You can add area rugs to add richness and texture to the floor, but choose one large rug rather than several small ones. Choose traditional rugs such as an oriental rug or a rug with a small floral print.

Another flooring option you might consider is carpet. Carpet will add visual warmth and texture to the room. Choose carpet in a soft neutral color, such as beige or cream, and in a texture that conveys simple elegance, such as a Saxony or Berber.

Wall Color

Wall colors in a traditional-style room should be simple and understated. Choose muted shades of blue, yellow or green, or choose a true neutral like beige or cream for the walls. Avoid using very bright or saturated colors such as orange or red, as these colors will distract from the traditional style you are striving for, and create a more modern feel to the room instead.

One element typical of traditional decorating is the use of crown molding painted with a semi-gloss white paint, so consider adding this to your bedroom walls to enhance the traditional feel.

Furniture

The focal point for the bedroom will most likely be the bed. Choose a wood bed made from a medium-tone wood such as mahogany or cherry to add elegance to the room. Choose traditional styles like sleigh beds, four-poster beds or panel beds. Avoid ultra-modern minimalist-style beds like platform beds or rustic-style beds like antique wrought iron. Either of these styles will detract from the traditional feel of the room.

For other furniture in the room, choose bedside tables, chests and dressers that match each other and the bed in both style and wood tone, as one element of traditional style is the uniformity of the furniture.

Accessories

Since the bed is probably to focal point of the room, the bed cover should be the most eye-catching accessory. Choose a thick, plush comforter in an elegant color like beige or ecru, or choose a floral print in pastel colors. Whether you go with a print or a solid, stick to elegant fabrics like silk, damask or velvet.

For other accessories, consider adding matching vases or lamps to the bedside tables, and frame prints and mirrors in cherry or mahogany wood frames for the walls. Choose drapes over sheer panels in richly textured fabrics like damask.
