Homemade Halloween Fence

Whether you want to build a fence to go around your Halloween graveyard or you're just looking for some spooky Halloween yard decor, you can build a Halloween fence in less than half a day, depending on the style of fence you want and how large an area you want covered. To make sure you build enough fence to cover the area the first time around, measure each side of the space where you want the fence to go with a tape measure. The measurements will tell you how much fence you need to create. Does this Spark an idea?

Choosing Materials

Before you begin constructing your Halloween fence, choose your materials. Halloween fences can be constructed from a variety of materials, including wood and polyvinyl chloride, or PVC, pipes. The materials you use to construct your fence are often dictated by the style of fence you're building. For instance, if you're building a fence that looks like wrought-iron, you'll want to create your fence from half-inch PVC, but if you're making a picket fence, you'll want to use wood.

Constructing Your Fence

For quick construction, cut all your pieces, including fence stakes and rails, before you begin construction. Then, attach the stakes vertically to the rails. In most cases, stakes can be nailed directly to the rail. However, if you are constructing a fence using PVC pipe, screw the pipes directly to the rail to avoid splitting or other issues. During construction, make sure that the stakes are far enough from the bottom rail to be pushed into the ground. If they're not, you'll have to find another means of stabilizing your fence.

Selecting a Color

The color you choose for your fence depends solely on the look you want to achieve. Sand picket fence boards to create a rough look, and stain them gray for a dilapidated look. Spray-paint PVC pipes black for a full-wrought iron style. Then, use a paintbrush to add rust paint to spots where the pipes meet for a creepy, old look. If your Halloween decorations are fun instead of creepy, paint your fence a fun Halloween color, such as green, purple or orange.

Other Considerations

When you create your fence plans, remember to think of the whole project and take all aspects into consideration. Before you begin building, decide how high you want your fence to be. In most cases, a typical Halloween fence is no more than 36 inches high. Take into consideration how much time and money you have to spend on the project. Some Halloween fences, such as a wrought-iron look-alike fence, can take day to complete, while others, such as a simple wood one, can take much less time.
