Southwest Interior Ideas

Southwest Interior Ideas

Whether or not you live in the southwest United States, Southwestern décor can create a warm, comforting atmosphere in your home. It utilizes elements from Native American and Mexican cultures, blending them with pieces from the ranchero and cowboy cultures. This style is rustic and elegant at the same time. Whether your home just needs a lift or you want to decorate a new home, Southwest style can make an old space feel new and a new space feel warm and inviting. Does this Spark an idea?

Paint Colors

Choose desert colors like light sandy brown, dusky creams, terra-cotta orange and rusty reds. Any of these colors work well as a wall color. For a lighter feel, paint an accent wall with red or orange and paint the rest of the walls with cream or brown. For a warm, cozy feel, paint all of the walls red or orange. Darker colors work best in well-lit rooms like kitchens and large family rooms.

If you like cool colors, consider bright cactus green and all hues of turquoise blue. These pair best with bright, cool whites. Use these colors in a bathroom, a bedroom and as accent colors in the whole house.

Furniture and Fabrics

Choose furniture with an organic look. Wood furniture of any color with a prominent grain works well, like curly maple or knotty pine. Very traditional Southwest furniture is made from slender logs or poles woven and bent together to create sturdy furniture. You can also choose square tables with decorative carvings around the edges and pair them with horseshoe-shaped chairs.

Soft leathers in browns and brown-reds are very popular for upholstery and cushions. Soften the leather a bit with Indian-print, fringed blankets that complement your paint choices. Wide stripes, large diamonds and fetish animal prints in complementary colors work well for throw pillows and decorative tapestries.

Plants and Accents

Choose spiny, desert plants like cactuses and aloe plants. Plant them in unglazed terra cotta pots of any shape or design. Cactuses come in many bright colors and sometimes blossom with fuchsia flowers. Pick something that goes well with your color scheme.

Wrought-iron and wood-based lamps are good lighting choices. Add visual interest to a backsplash or fireplace with hand-painted Spanish tiles. Find vases with similar designs to hold dried heather and hang serene desert prints on the walls.
