Inexpensive Ideas For Building A Breakfast Nook

Make your kitchen the most desirable place in your home with a breakfast nook. Cozy and inviting, breakfast nooks were once a type of tiny, built-in room, attached to a kitchen. However, you can build a breakfast nook without going through the expense of remodeling your whole kitchen. Does this Spark an idea?

Long Bench Nook

Build a bench that's wide enough for comfortable seating, and long enough to suit your kitchen table, or purchase a bench with the right dimensions at a home improvement store. Purchase a square table, and cover it in colorful vintage oil cloth. Hang curtains in fabric that complement the colors in the oil cloth. Attach a row of solid-color pillow cushions to the wall, just above the edge of the bench, for a comfortable backrest. Put two or three chairs around the table. Stain or paint the chairs and the bench off-white.

Booth Breakfast Nook

Purchase two wooden booth benches at an architectural salvage yard, or at a restaurant supply company in sizes that suit your kitchen space. Or, find inexpensive benches of all types at unpainted furniture stores. Buy a rectangular table to put between the benches. Place these near a window in your kitchen, the long way. Paint them in a light color if you don't want a heavy look in a small kitchen. Consider a shabby chic finish, or a white background with pastel botanical stenciling, such as blue flowers with green leaves.

Fifties Nook

Find a small vintage 1950s dinette table with an aluminum border and hard laminate top. Surround it with chairs covered in bright-colored vinyl upholstery. Put the set in the corner of your kitchen near the windows. Put white plantation shutters over the corner windows to balance the bright-colored look, making your breakfast nook a mix of vintage and modern.

White Storage Bench

Build or buy a simple storage bench, paint it white and place it under the windows. Find a rectangular pedestal table and paint it white. Put two antique wood chairs on the opposite side. Hand-paint the chairs in mint green, light blue or yellow, to create a mild contrast with the white look of your breakfast nook.

French Cafe Breakfast Nook

Purchase a small wrought iron table and chairs at a home improvement store or garden center when they're having a sale on summer items. Spray paint the table in the color that suits your kitchen decor, or leave as is. Try to find table and chair sets that are quaintly designed, evoking a French cafe feel for your breakfast nook.
