Styles Of Yard Fences

You can choose which fence works best for your yard.

Fences can do a lot for your yard, such as protect it against intruders, keep animals on the property or simply act as an accessory to the overall decor of your home. Depending on your needs, you can choose from many styles of fences. Does this Spark an idea?

Picket Fences

The picket fence is one of the most common fences surrounding a yard. While some fences secure your property, picket fences are instead a way to define the yard space. They are often low to the ground (under 4 or 5 feet tall). The fence gets its name from the row of pointed pickets, with small spaces in between, that make up its construction. Picket fences serve no real security purpose, and because of their wood construction, come in an array of colors and designs.

Chain Link Fences

Chain link fences are another common style of yard fence. These are made up of a series of metal poles with heavy metal wire interwoven into diamond shapes between each post. This style is most often used for security. Generally, these fences are fairly high, which makes them difficult to climb over. Because of their impenetrability, chain link fences are also good for keeping dogs and other pets safely inside the yard.

Stone Fences

Stone fences are one of the oldest styles of fences, dating back centuries. Because their construction involved only stacking large stones on top of one another, these fences became the simplest way for people to mark their territory. Nowadays, many people choose stone fences because of the rustic feel they provide. Since they are often low to the ground, stone fences do not offer much in the way of security. Some people simply use stone fences as a way to separate their gardens or flower beds from the rest of the yard.

Wrought Iron Fences

Wrought iron fences are quite old-fashioned. Unlike the simple stone fence, the wrought-iron variety tends to be very ornate. These fences are made up of heavy iron bars often bent into intricate shapes, especially at the top and around the gate entrance. Wrought-iron fences commonly surround Victorian homes and large estates. Although they are decorative, because they are so strong and are built to stand tall, wrought-iron fences safely secure yards.

Post-and-Rail Fences

Post-and-rail fences are popular on ranches. These fences are simple and consist of two or three rails at the most, broken up between a series of posts. Because post-and-rail fences are so low to the ground and leave so much space between the rails, they are not considered protective. They are useful, however, in preventing cattle and other stable animals from wandering off. Many non-ranch-owners choose post-and-rail fences for their yards because of their Western feel.
