Paint Metal Picture Frames

If you need a metal picture frame for a photo or certificate or even as a gift, don't run out and buy a new one just yet. Look for metal picture frames right in your own home or search garage sales and thrift stores for old picture frames. You can easily transform an outdated, faded or discolored metal picture frame into a new-looking frame with spray paint. Paint metal picture frames for a fun, money-saving craft project.

1. Prepare the frame to be painted. Remove the glass from the picture frame. Don't worry about existing paint unless there is peeling. Sand down any areas of peeling paint. For a smoother surface, truer paint color and a better seal, aerosol paint supplier Krylon recommends applying a layer a primer over the surface before spray painting.

2. Locate a well-ventilated area, preferably outdoors in a place sheltered from the wind. Bring your metal picture frames and painting supplies to the ventilated area.

3. Spread the dropcloth or old shower curtain on the ground or other flat surface. You can also use a newspaper or old sheet to protect the ground or surface underneath from unwanted paint mist.

4. Lay the picture frame flat on the dropcloth or shower curtain. Place a small wooden block underneath each corner of the picture frame. The blocks will allow you to easily paint the sides of the picture frame without having to pick it up.

5. Use a rust-preventing spray paint for use on metal. You can find spray paints designed specifically for metal at your hardware, automotive or hobbies and crafts store. Shake up the spray paint can to mix the paint. Follow the paint's label instructions for shaking times.

6. Before painting, put on your face mask. Hold the can of paint about a foot above the frame. Lightly spray the first coat of paint over the picture frame. Krylon recommends moving evenly over the entire surface instead of painting smaller areas at a time. Spray painting the entire surface at once will ensure even distribution and eliminate unsightly borders.

7. Leave the picture frame in place on the dropcloth and allow the first coat of spray paint to dry. Krylon notes that spray paints generally dry quickly. Wait about 20 minutes before apply another coat. Wait another 20 minutes and repeat until your picture frame has the desired look.
