The Best Tropical Patio Decoration Ideas

Tiki torches are an ideal decoration for a tropically themed patio.

A patio is often used for entertaining, so making it a fun place to gather can be worth the time and effort. A tropical theme can work well, because its carefree, relaxing vibe is ideal for parties, barbecues and picnics. The right decorations are a must. Does this Spark an idea?

Tiki Bar

No tropically themed patio is complete without a tiki bar, with its thatched roof and bamboo accents. If you're a do-it-yourselfer, you may relish the challenge of building your tiki bar from scratch, but home-improvement stores also offer kits. Consider adding a refrigerator-freezer and an outlet so that you don't have to run into the house to get ice or use the blender. Stock your tiki bar with tropical glasses and paper umbrellas so you're ready to serve up delicious frozen drinks whenever friends pop by.

Torches and Lighting

Tiki torches are an ideal decorative lighting element for a tropically themed patio. These torches are available in a variety of materials, including bamboo, wood and copper. Copper tiki torches are usually more durable than torches made of other materials and can give your patio a stylish look.

If you're going for a more whimsical or funky look, consider tropically themed string lights or even a rope-light palm tree alongside your tiki bar.

Rattan Furniture

Wrought-iron or plastic furniture doesn't cut it when you're trying to create a tropical retreat on your patio. Instead, opt for synthetic rattan or wicker furniture in natural colors. In addition to a table and chair set, consider purchasing a rattan love seat and armchairs. Add wicker stools to your tiki bar. Choosing rattan- and wicker-like materials and water-resistant fabrics for the cushions will keep your furniture in good shape even if it's exposed to significant rainfall.

Tropical Plants

For a truly authentic look, tropical plants are a must for your patio. Potted palm trees, bamboo, orchids and birds of paradise are all lovely options. Have them growing in containers and along trellises. If you live in a cold climate, artificial plants and flowers are an alternative. Or consider potted hibiscus, calla lillies and California fan palm trees. You can have them outside in the summer and take the pots inside in the winter.

Mosquito Netting

If your patio has a roof, consider adding mosquito netting as another tropical -- and very practical -- touch. Hang it as you would a curtain along the roof line, and pull it back during the day. At night, close the mosquito netting to keep the flying insects out.
