Recoat the mesh area of wrought iron furniture carefully.
Wrought iron furniture can be intricate and ornate with its shape and design. This type of furniture often features a mesh surface over the seat area or on the back of the chair for support. Because wrought iron requires regular maintenance to control rust and paint chips, you may need to paint the pieces to keep them attractive. By using the correct tools and materials, your furniture should stay in good shape for many years. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Spread the plastic tarp over a well-ventilated work area - outdoors on a day with temperatures between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit would be ideal. Place the wrought iron furniture onto the plastic tarp.
2. Brush the surfaces of the wrought iron with the wire brush to remove loose and flaking paint. Use the steel wool to sand small crevices. Pay special attention to the mesh areas of the furniture, making sure that you rub the steel wool in between each small area of the mesh to sand these surfaces thoroughly. Wipe the furniture down well with the tack cloth to remove dust.
3. Fill the bucket with warm water and add two squirts of dishwashing detergent to the water. Saturate the cleaning cloth with soapy water and wash the furniture thoroughly. Rinse away the soap with plain water and dry the furniture with a towel. Allow the furniture to dry completely before you continue.
4. Shake the can of primer for at least three minutes. Hold the can about 14 inches away from the furniture and begin applying the primer evenly over the surface of the metal. Move the can continuously while you spray. Do not apply so much primer that it begins to drip off the metal surface. Cover the inner surfaces of the mesh area completely with primer. Allow the primer to dry for about one hour.
5. Shake the can of paint for three minutes. Apply the paint over the wrought iron surfaces using the same application technique you used to spray the primer. Use special care to coat the mesh areas evenly and thoroughly. Allow the paint to dry for about one hour and then apply a second coat.
6. Allow the paint to dry on the furniture for 24 hours before using it.
