Mortara is a small town in the Lombardy region of Italy near its border with the Piedmont region. Mortara is ideally located as it nearly occupies the midpoint between Milan, Genova, and Torino, all of which are about an hour drive away. A tough area for backpackers to navigate as the train service is limited and cars are the preferred mode of travel, it does at least offer some budget accommodations to make a trip more affordable.

Locanda Trento is a small, family-owned hotel and restaurant located in the eastern center of Mortara, about half a mile from the main rail station. Primarily known and visited for its traditional restaurant, the Locanda Trento provides simple accommodations in the upstairs portion of the building, which have beds and simple wood furniture, tile floors, a work desk and large window, TV, and air conditioning. Guests may choose room, half-board, or full-board reservations, with all meals served in the downstairs restaurant (which is closed on Sundays). B&B La Casa Inglese, Novara
Located in the city of Novara about 16 miles from Mortara, the B&B La Casa Inglese Hotel is a few notches above what you might expect from a hostel but still a budget accommodation.
