Clawfoot Tub
Elegant and stylish cast iron claw foot tub. Unfortunately, many of these antique tubs are so old they are rusted and damage that make them ugly and impossible to use. Before you throw the tub out, or pass one up at an antique dealer's store, consider refinishing it. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Using your putty knife, fill in dings, gouges, scratches and pock marks in the tub's surface with fiberglass putty. If the interior of the tub has been damaged by harsh cleaning agents, you may have to putty the entire inside of the tub.
2. Sand the puttied areas first with coarse 36-grit, sandpaper to level the area. When finished, smooth over the surface with 80-grit sandpaper.
3. Use a clean cloth to wipe down the sanded area, then use another cloth to apply the bonding agent so your layer of acrylic urethane enamel adheres to the surface. Wait for the acrylic urethane to dry.
4. Put on your safety mask and make sure the room you are going to be painting in is well ventilated.
5. Apply three layers of of acrylic urethane with a spray gun, allowing a 15-minute drying period between each new layer. Give the finish time to set.
6. Sand away any rough spots with 1000-grit sandpaper and clean the sanded dust away with a slightly damp towel.
7. Buff the surface to a shine with a hand-held buffer, or by hand.
